..."Mature religious consciousness is thus not possible without three paths: psychological growth, spiritual progress, and mystical union. The psychological path shows us what helps us become healthy human beings and have more effective relationships. Spiritual progress means letting go of an inflated ego and becoming compassionate. It’s no secret that Maui has a housing crisis, and it’s also no secret that Hawaii has some of the lowest percentages of available land zoned for residential use. Growing up on Maui I knew this reality all too well as my family spent some time homeless and where I currently live I see so many Kanaka Maoli move to the mainland in search of housing opportunities and it breaks my heart.
I did some research into why housing is so expensive in Hawaii and other sought after locations in the United States. It turns out that a lot of the cost always come back to how land is zoned. Most of the residential lots in Hawaii are zoned for single family homes, which takes up the most amount of space with the least amount of density. This type of zoning is great for developers who want to cash out the most amount of profitability for their investments, but horrible for developing housing on an island with limited space.
On top of that, Hawaii uses a tax system which only taxes housing by its property value and not the value of the land it sits on. This in combination with land use regulations essentially incentivizes land lording and predatory investment practices.
In my opinion I think Hawaii should go back to its roots by rezoning a lot of single family/industrial lots to multi family/mixed use lots. Then, also switch from a property tax system to a land value system to incentivize land owners to produce the most amount of units possible to offset their taxes.
This would add thousands of new rental units to the market and cool down Maui’s housing crisis.
A great example of how this can be handled successfully abroad is Tokyo, which boasts a relatively low cost of housing for being one of the most densely populated areas in the world. And nationally Chicago is another great city that has a relatively low cost of housing for being the 3rd most populated city in the United States.
More and more municipalities are adopting mixed use/multi family housing across America because the idea of cookie cutter homes and white picket fences are the most ineffective way to create diverse and flourishing communities.

For people who care about how their food is produced, just because the name Monsanto goes away, it doesn’t mean we forget the company’s practices that continue to harm the environment and imperil public health. How they have helped create superweeds. How they’ve made glyphosate, likely a carcinogen, an industrial farming staple. How they have prosecuted farmersfor seed saving. Bayer will still be selling Roundup and genetically modified, Roundup Ready seeds. These continue to be important issues demanding action, and we will continue to care, whether or not the word “Monsanto” drops from common parlance.
In the US right now, four companies control 60 percent of the chicken market, four companies control 85 percent of the beef market and, in 2015, just four companies produced about 50 percent of the pork. Increased prices and worse pay are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to consolidation’s effects.

Innate as Indigenous Environmental Sustainability
From the conception of a child, to the emergence of the universe. Hidden in plain view is the energy life force principle. This principle is called by many names, yet its function and relationship remains constant. Hidden in plain view, the spark of life permeates the universe. This life force called my mystics as the innate, to scientists such as Einstein puts it, in terms of, energy at the speed of light squared. Eastern philosophy calls it the tao, in the west we call it the spirit. There is no distinction between this material and the psycho/ spiritual reality. Matter is energy and energy is vibration. This vibration is the sound of life. The aum in one world view or the logos in another. This is the divine chant of the universe. This song manifested is the word become flesh. It has held the all things by its word, and from it all things have come. It has sustained and becomes all things it loves. This is true indigenous environmental sustainability. The life that holds all things together in deep intimate participation and integration.
The mystics and poets, desert fathers and shamans seem to have caught glimpses of these things long before our contemporary sciences. Chaos theory, fractal geometry, quantum mechanics are just todays words for saying something of long ago. Before God spoke only in king James English, yoga mats, and the latest psychedelic trends, firsts peoples integrated maps of meaning to live sustainability within their environment. No written language, sacred poses, or external helps needed. Just generations of ancestral knowledge passed down and intimate relationship with the biosphere. Interdependence on the whole, one folding into another. Just as the universe expands within itself, so the human consciousness in the like.
Prior to the age of warrior/ king cultures. Divine feminine cultures represented a time and space of human collaboration and sharing. A development state of human collective consciousness in matters of the elements, astrology, healing arts, and most of all agriculture. During this time technology was also used, but as relics of worship not war. Divine feminine cultures out of the animistic epoch see the divine spark of life as something to commune with rather than consume or conquer. Seasons and cycles guided and nurtured humanity. She taught them when to plant and harvest. Spoke to humanity through the full spectrum of their senses. From the stars, winds, flora and fauna, she sings to humanity songs of unconditional connection. Do you have the eyes to see and ears to hear?
In todays political climate, warrior/ king culture has dominated the spheres of society and the natural environment. Just like Rome, warrior/ king culture, our western world today dominates the known world of the time and made it its own. As it conquers and consumes surrounding cultures, it became a monoculture of its own. An example of this can be seen during the time of Constantine. Prior, Christians were being persecuted for their followings of Jesus. After Constantine made Christianity the “official religion” of Rome, the teachings of Jesus became weaponed and used as justification to conquer foreign lands and the spoil in the name of Christ.
This is the shadow of the warrior/ king type cultures. If left unchecked, thus emerges the tyrant. Environmental capitalism and monopolies continue to steal, kill, and destroy land and people groups. Deforestation, coral bleaching, water diversions, poor natural resource management, and soil depletion due to chemical and pesticides all continue the structural violence we live in today. ...

Article I wrote in response to midwifery legislation like SB2661.
Holistic health considers multidimensional aspects of wellness. When it comes to holistic health we are looking beyond the physical body. Its addressing the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual pieces of health. We should take that holistic idea into pregnancy, especially when considering indigenous wisdom. We know physical health, values and beliefs, relationships, emotional wellbeing, and spirituality all affect pregnancy and birth. Often issues and chronic conditions we face as teens or adults can, in fact, be traced to brain and nervous system patterning. Your birth period outlines our your sense of self, an “imprintation” you could say. If distorted, it can create the inability to trust the world around us. We walk through life with these patterns. All rooted in the experiences we had at conception, during womb life, in birth, and in those first crucial hours afterward.
Healthy holistic pregnancy and birth means comprehension of the interconnected whole. This is one role of the midwife. A sacred trust to guide the birthing process in a holistic way.
Today, in Hawaii, this sacred trust is being challenged by secular globalization agendas. This secular global agenda leans towards commerce, NOT culture. Deep ancestral knowledge, culture, and spirituality continues to be industrialized by institutional health doctrine, status quo, restrictive policies, and finances.
In Hawaii, there is an ongoing struggle against midwifery, particularly indigenous midwifery practices (pale keiki) and the State of Hawaii.
Practitioners who have been caring in our community for generations are soon to be discredited by the State of Hawaii if they do not meet a certain licensing process. This requirement created by the State of Hawaii takes time and finance which many of our local midwives to not have the current capacity to do. Also raises the question of power and control within the birthing sphere. Furthermore, states like Oregon who have already gone though this kind of licensure restriction have now passed exemptions to it. In other words, Oregon wants to reverse of what our state is stepping into.
We need to support the holistic health and birthing movement. We need to support our midwives here in Hawaii. They are the carriers of indigenous wisdom and technology. Midwives in Hawaii are taking a stand against laws and policies that will deny their rights to the practice, deny their rights to pass on sacred tradition. Midwifery is a culture which is foundational for our society. Let us support our foundations.
These are just platforms for a sovereign Hawaii. It is not contingent upon other states. We need to create laws and exemptions to further empower our people, not polices to control. Holistic health raises our collective human consciousness. In letting go, let’s base our relationships on sacred, localized practices. Changing the lives of the future keiki. One birth at a time.

According to the National Institutes of Health the human body contains trillions of living microorganisms outnumbering human cells by ten to one. We know that nearly 10 trillion (1013) bacterial cells make up a human’s microbiome. These microbes not only aid in their host’s digestion and nutrition, but also represent an extension of its immune system.
Viruses also have benefits. Most of the genetic information on Earth probably resides within them. Viruses are also important for transferring genes between different species, increasing genetic diversity and enhancing evolution and the adaptation of various organisms to changing environmental challenges.
Today we are focusing mostly on the cause and effects of disease within a sterile laboratory petri-dish. Rather than seeing the microbial world within the context of reality in all its complexity. We have created an unhealthy rationale to inject fear into the hearts and minds of the people. There is a disheartening possibility that we may have disrupted the natural evolutionary process of adaptation and biodiversity.

Things are more complicated than they seem. There is no one solution for all. Thus the importance of education. We need to practice what we preach, to not be afraid to be bold and humble, to share our convictions and concerns. Just as there is a cultural revitalization on the land, we need a cultural revitalization within our souls. We need to mālama our kino lau (the many living forms within our bodies), and do what is pono (what is necessary or balanced) to make sure we are not coming under any influence of oppression, suppression, and manipulation.
I believe that the many life forms of our ancestors are still here today. They are in our waters, streams, oceans, and lands. It is said that within a teaspoon of soil there are 10 trillion living organisms. The same goes for our water. Research from Harvard Medical School and the Joslin Diabetes Center suggests that bacteria living inside of us may collectively contain more novel genes than there are stars in the observable universe. … Many estimates have found there to be more bacterial cells than human cells in a body – up to 10 times more in fact.
As our sacred lands are being restored, we should restore ourselves. Go for a walk in our forests. Take a dive in our ocean. Garden and breath in your microbiome. As global leaders we need to continue to adapt and diversify. It starts at home, it begins within.

Think Global, Act Local
The root word of global means circular. Thinking global means to think in a non linear way. We need leadership who thinks globally, meaning in an interrelated way (Global communion, Universal Intimacy). What we have in the past is linear thinking leadership. Meaning one dimensional thinkers. Getting one dimensional outcomes.
Thinking global means involving the whole. Thats what it means to be holistic. In order to be holistic you have to come out of the box. Today we have many environmental issues because we are still in the human box. In academic language it is called anthropocentrism.
Anthropocentrism, philosophical viewpoint arguing that human beings are the central or most significant entities in the world. This is a basic belief embedded in many Western religions and philosophies.
Many of these Western religions and philosophies bleed into our political and educational institutions. Which creates a society that is obsessed with itself. The glorification of humanity has become the desolation of the environment.
In Hawaii we see this desolation in real time dramatic effect. While only comprising of less than once percent of the United States land mass, Hawaiʻi contains 44% of the nations endangered and threatened plant species.
Indigenous cultures around the world, including our very own kanaka maoli think circular. They are global thinkers. Not linear as compared to our modern western worldview. More specifically, Hawaiians thought like an ahupuaʻa. An ahupuaʻa is the basic self-sustaining unit that extended elements of Hawaiian spirituality into the natural landscape. They were in intimate relationship with the flora and fauna, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. These elemental forces, natural vibration, universal conscious expressions were deeply embedded in how Native Hawaiians thought and acted.
Today we need come back to an ancient Hawaiian proverb “nānā I ke kumu” (look to the source). We need multidimensional thinkers in our spheres of society. Spheres of society such as government, education, religion, family, arts, and entertainment.
During this cultural revival here in Hawaiʻi. Let us learn to think global. Let us as Hawaii people think like an ahupuaʻa.
