Inclusive & Online is a monthly podcast where your hosts, Kate Huttenlocher and Dan Arnold, will discuss topics relating to inclusivity, educational technology, and online learning. Join Kate and Dan for lively discussion of relevant topics, poignant interviews, and for recommendations on tech tools that will help you create the inclusive environments that you seek in your classrooms and beyond.

Working toward open mindedness, inclusivity, and being able to meet people where they are at has been a part of my journey at every step both personally and professionally. After working in K-8 education for a time, I decided to pursue a Master’s in Counseling from Oakland University. It was at this point that I began working as a graduate assistant in e-Learning before becoming full time staff of Oakland University’s e-Learning and Instructional Support office during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have been serving as the Assistant Manager of Support Services at e-LIS since January 2021. Working in e-Learning has given me the opportunity to explore the ways in which we can make education more inclusive and accessible for all students. Outside of work, I enjoy frequenting local coffee shops, spending time with my cats, and am an avid podcast listener.
Dan Arnold, Ph.D. (he/him/his)
I’m Dr. Dan and I’m the Manager of Support Services for Oakland University’s e-Learning and Instructional Support team. With over 17 years of higher education experience ranging from student financial aid, to student recruitment, to online learning, I have worked with a wide range of students and colleagues over the years. My journey toward learning more about inclusion started while working on my doctorate, and has continued to this day. I enjoy thinking about and enacting ways for all learning environments to be more inclusive. On a personal note, I like snacks, sports, and dogs.
This month we welcome back Andrea Knutson and Noelle Mongene from OU's Native American Advisory Committee. In the second part of a two-part episode, they provide updates on their efforts around the OU community, including the dedication of a Native American Heritage Site and who led the charge to establish OU's Land Acknowledgement Statement.

This month we continue our conversation with OU's Director of Financial Aid, Nicole Boelk. We discuss how recent changes to the upcoming FAFSA are intended to address concerns over accessibility, the federal verification process, and common misconceptions about the financial aid. Come learn more about how financial aid offices, and the staff who work in them, play a critical role in DEI throughout the campus community.
In part 1 of a 2 part conversation, we meet with Oakland University's Director of Financial Aid, Nicole Boelk, to discuss recent federal changes to the 2024-25 FAFSA. We discuss how changes to the FAFSA calculation could mean more access to aid for new populations, and the implications for the broader financial aid community. Come learn more about these sweeping changes prior to the new FAFSA release scheduled for December 2023.
This month we met with Allan Case, Director of Admissions Operations at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. This wide-ranging discussion covers the admissions process, DEI considerations, and how current legislation and Supreme Court rulings have affected admissions practices.
This month we take a break from interviewing guests. Instead, the three of us discussed some of the issues facing students as they return to campus for the fall. We also give a sneak peak into how this discussion will help frame the remainder of Season 2.
This month we met with Dr. Olysha Magruder from Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering. This wide-ranging discussion covers inclusivity, culture, accessibility, and how you can incorporate concepts of each to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment. This month we sit down with Angie Freeman from the University of Michigan to discuss Juneteenth. Come learn more about the history of the holiday, some of the rich symbolism surrounding the Juneteenth flag, and implications for higher education.

On this month's episode, we sit down with a couple of student veterans to discuss their experience going from the military and back into the classroom. They share how their military experience set them up to be successful in the classroom, and how they navigate learning with younger students whose concerns are often quite different than their own.

This month, Dan, Kayla, and Kate speak with Christie Gough, the Disability Support Services Coordinator at Oakland University. Christie shares some insight about student accommodations and dives into how accommodations are provided in online and face to face courses. What box do you check for race when you're filling out a form? For many people, there's not necessarily an easy answer. Two or more refers to people who identify as two or more races. We meet with Oakland University student Brian Petty to hear about his personal identity journey and what it means to be two or more.
On this month's episode, we sit down with two student athletes to get their take on what it's like being both a student and athlete at the D1 level. On top of their academic obligations, you'll be surprised to learn how much more time management is need to balance a student athlete schedule. We also discuss implications for learning while on the road, mental well-being, and more of the issues student athletes face while trying to obtain their education.
