I know you’re tired. You’re stressed, stressed and its been a long year. That coupled with all the battles we've had to deal with during this whole COVID nightmare and fully teaching online. You feel like your'e about to stab a pencil in your eye if you have to grade one more paper or set up one more enhanced provision.
Your to do list is a mile long, and summer is so close you can taste it.
But in the midst of all the chaos and anticipation, I want to encourage you to do one thing:
Remember why you’re here.
You want to make a difference.
You want to help nurture and guide a young generation who, lets face it, are the future of this world we live in now.

Hello and welcome to the Early Years Create Podcast.
In this episode we will examine ways you can apply Piaget’s stages of cognitive development in your play-based learning classroom. You will discover some practical play-based learning ideas for children in each of Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development.
Piaget's theory of cognitive development proposes 4 stages of development.
- Sensorimotor stage: birth to 2 years
- Preoperational stage: ages 2 to 7
- Concrete operational stage: ages 7 to 11
- Formal operational stage: ages 12 and up
Piaget suggested these stages occur in this order and as children develop, they will not skip a stage but progressively move through each one. He observed visible changes in children as they pass through each stage. We can see the stages as a staircase because each stage builds on the stage before it.
Piaget's theories about learning strongly suggest we should focus on creating engaging learning environments which provide opportunities for children to experiment and interact with the world around them.
Educators need to provide interactive, hands-on learning experiences so children can progress through Piaget’s stages of cognitive development and meet their cognitive developmental milestones. For children to construct new knowledge and mental models of understanding, we must carefully plan and provide purposeful play experiences for our students.
