A domestic violence survivor, Maria Styke-Marquez, appears alone in Judge Keith Tanaka's Second Circuit courtroom where, according to documents filed by the perpetrator's attorney, Mimi DeJardins, the judge will grant her abuser's request to permanently relocate to Minnesota with the former couple's 2 1/2 year-old daughter, removing her not only from the island of her birth, but from her mother.
The child's father, Bruce Anthony Sotelo Jr., was convicted and held in jail for beating a pregnant Ms. Styke-Marquez so severely in 2007 that the 4 month-old baby she was carrying may have died as a result of the attack that left Ms. Styke-Marquez with a concussion, broken ribs, cracked teeth, a split lip and contusions.

Lyn grew up watching all forms of abuse in the lives of her parents. She was victimized as a child by a psychologically abusive father who caused years of separation from her mother, an Asian immigrant who was pressured to marry an American that she had never met. Lyn’s abusive childhood set the stage for her and she later became a victim of intimate partner violence.
After sometime of healing and while trying to find resources for another immigrant victim of violence in her own family, Lyn found that comprehensive resources were lacking online. Also, she realized she needed to be a part of breaking the cycle of violence within her own family and families across the country so she founded Courage Network in February of 2009.

Our postcard project needs your help.
We are a group of Eastern Kentucky College students working on a project to raise awareness as well as advocate for women who have lost custody of their children to their alleged abuser after alleging and/or proving domestic abuse.
We are hoping to create a traveling display for use at various events to raise awareness.
We are requesting these women send anonymous postcards with a short message to the world which could include:
- Their regrets as they have gone through the process (hindsight)
- What they would say if their gag order was lifted
- What they would like to say to their judge, abuser, or their children
- What they wish they had as far as help
- What they would like to see changed in the laws.
Instructions:
You may use any postcard that you desire. This will be for public view, so we do not require your name. We would like to know:
- the state your case is in
- the number of children involved and how often you see them
- if child protective services was involved (DHS, DYFUS, CPS etc.)
- how long your case has been going on
- if you have a gag order
- Please give us a few sentences in your own words, write legibly and large.
Suggested topics include:
