In this live episode, hosts Sarah and Stef explain the concepts of "All-In Recovery" versus "All or Nothing Thinking," particularly in the context of the nondiet approach to overeating and restriction cycles.
Stef explains that "All-In Recovery" involves abandoning restrictive eating behaviors entirely, which actually IS a quite all-or-nothing experience. She also explains how it worked to find enough inner quiet to actually find intuitive eating authentically.
Throughout the episode, they highlight the distinctions between intentional eating without shame and unchecked binge eating, stressing the importance of presence and self-compassion in recovery. The hosts also address audience questions about how to identify if All-In Recovery is right for someone and the interplay between allowing binges and maintaining a helpful mindset.
Overall, the episode provides valuable insights into the nuanced differences between these approaches, offering practical advice for individuals navigating their own recovery journeys.

The conversation touches on the role of community in managing these reactions and the importance of compassion and presence when dealing with emotional triggers. In this lively and unique episode, Sarah and Stef delve into the concept of joy. They share their personal experiences and struggles with finding joy, reflecting on moments that brought them happiness and the impact those moments had on their mental states. From a sunny drive to Brighton listening to summer reggae (Sarah) to a rollercoaster ride with her daughters (Stef), they explore how joy can stem from both big and small moments. They also discuss the complications of linking joy to external validation (like viral YouTube success or getting asked out by a crush) versus the pure joy from unconnected experiences like nature, music, or meaningful connections. Through their candid conversation, they connect the dots between joy, peace, gratitude, and even existential realizations, proposing that our defenses may often block joy. Along the way, both hosts get a bit vulnerable and offer insights into leaning into moments of discomfort as a way to invite more joy into life.

In this episode, we explore the complex emotion of anger. We discuss how anger can be a suppressed emotion (and create conditions for bingeing and restricting) because sometimes, it's an emotion we are afraid to feel. On the other hand, it can be a high-energy emotion that just takes a lot of wrangling to keep regulated! For the first time ever on this podcast, we actually discuss -- live, and without pre-planning -- a recent personal conflict between us when we went to Bournemouth for a workshop. In real time, we hope to demonstrate the importance of rupture and repair in relationships. This episode also touches upon the interplay of helplessness and anger, the significance of understanding physical responses to emotions, and strategies for managing these intense feelings. 03:00 Revealing Today's Topic: Anger 05:23 Personal Experiences with Anger 07:31 A Moment of Conflict 10:42 Processing and Reflecting on Anger 23:05 Memory and Miscommunication 24:39 Physical Reactions to Emotional Stress 26:56 Rupture and Repair in Relationships 27:58 Personal Experiences with Conflict Resolution 30:40 Helplessness and Control 36:59 Balancing Perspectives and Finding Ease 43:18 Reflections and Closing Thoughts Learn more about Stef's 3-month Binge Recovery Program (from anywhere in the world!) beginning the 9th of September, 2024.

In this episode, we explore the complex role guilt plays in our lives, particularly around topics like eating, self-care, and productivity. We start things off with some chit-chat about recording while standing up -- Stef has a moment of body image angst, revisted at the end of the episode.
We discuss how guilt can stem from societal expectations and personal values, and whether it truly helps drive positive change or just makes us feel worse. We also talk about how guilt compares to integrity and self-care, arguing that aligning with one’s values might be a healthier motivator than guilt.
Several personal stories highlight these ideas:
The conversation also touches on parental expectations, societal pressures about how to look, eat, and "succeed", and the importance of self-compassion (explained in context, not the abstract boring way).

In this engaging episode of their podcast, Stef and Sarah dive deep into the topic of mindful eating. Stef shares some insightful anecdotes about how clients often come to her with a preconceived notion of how they "should" be eating. Sarah chimes in with practical advice from her workshops, suggesting that eating mindfully isn't about being perfect but more about being present.
Throughout the episode, they explore the challenges and misconceptions surrounding the practice. They emphasize that mindful eating isn't one-size-fits-all. For some, it can exacerbate issues like perfectionism or diet culture pressures. They also talk about the importance of self-compassion and curiosity in the journey towards a healthier relationship with food.
There are relatable stories about struggles with binge eating, the cultural weight of diet culture, and the roller coaster of trying to eat "right." They also hit on some lighter notes, like Sarah's recent misadventure with an electric blanket and Stef's physical therapy updates.

You know what's hard in a life after diets? When people comment on your body or your food choices. How are we supposed to respond? It is a tough balance between setting boundaries, managing conflict, and not feeling triggered.
The conversation starts out with a reflection of Stef's conversation the previous day with her Mom, but moves through different scenarios that we might run up against in our non-diet culture driven life. Some scenarios include: what if someone asks me if I'm pregnant? What if someone is just ignorant or making a non-critical observation? What if their comment triggers my own self doubt?
Tune in now!

If we're not dieting, won't we just be completely out of control with food? That's the risk when we feel like we can't trust ourselves.
In this episode, we talk about what self-trust is -- including how we thought about it before recovery and how we think about it now. And maybe most importantly, how we developed more of it!
This episode was livestreamed to our private community so we also answer some listener questions about personal experiences with self-trust.

How do other people make decisions about what to eat? Have you ever been interested in understanding what makes a person choose the breakfast or lunch or snack that they choose? Sarah and Stef offer their personal decision making processes of the meals they ate the day of recording this podcast. From there, the conversation branches off into topics like practical hunger, interoception (a principle of Intuitive Eating), cravings, habits, and preferences.
We also ask ourselves the question: what do you do when nothing sounds good?
Finally, we talk about what strategies you might use to make decisions about food if you're still in the middle of disordered thoughts and behaviors around food.

This week we are talking to Sam Abbott, RD about PCOS! Many of our listeners have been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian sydrome) and medical recommendations to manage symptoms are usually geared towards weight loss and food restrictions. How does someone with PCOS balance this condition within a nondiet value system? We'll look at:

This episode is all about relapse in the context of eating disorder recovery. We cover topics such as shame, self-awareness, boundaries, dopamine regulation, catastrophization, and the impact of life circumstances on relapse.
Relapses can be very distressing; it's tempting to think we've failed or that we'll "never really get better." In the second half of this episode, we talk about the idea of "remembering and forgetting" as a muscle that actually builds resilience over time in eating disorder recovery -- even if the "forgetting" is relapsing.

This week we are talking about attachment styles.
The psychological concepts of anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, and disorganized attachment have been used to understand our relationship dynamics with other people, but can it also be used to understand our relationship dynamics with food?
For example, anxious attachment in relationships looks like constantly seeking validation and having porous boundaries with ourselves and others for fear of losing connection. Might this also translate to having porous boundaries with food? Would we consistently seek out and overeat because we have scarcity around that, too?
Tune in to see how an understanding of attachment theory might help you understand why Intuitive Eating feels difficult and binge eating, compulsive eating, and/or restricting feels so primal...

The world talks a lot about self-care, but many people in this community feel selfish taking care of themselves. It can be seen as indulgent to take the time to tend to our own needs, especially as mothers -- check out the second half of the podcast where Stef addresses this from her perspective as a parent (her take might surprise you). So what's the difference between self care and self indulgence?
Speaking of indulgence, we also look at the way we talk about food under this lens. Are the connotations of this word inherently problematic? Are we just gluttons or is there a case for the healthy pursuit of food as pleasure, or even as self-care?

We are back with another recovery story -- this time from Louise, a member of our community (which you can join here, by the way!) Louise explains her story of disordered eating and restriction starting in adolescence, eventually leading her to give up dieting to lean into an anti-diet approach. Like so many others in ED recovery, Louise had to deal with weight gain and body image issues in exchange for food freedom -- but came out with this story to tell. Listen to her inspirational message about sex, attraction, and empowerment in this very cool, real-story episode.

In this bonus episode Marcus Cain addresses community questions and discuss broader perspectives on fitness beyond mere weight loss.
Marcus addresses the first question about decoupling exercise from the desire to lose weight, highlighting the challenge many face in reconnecting with exercise as a source of joy rather than a tool for body modification. He suggests exploring activities enjoyed in childhood and experimenting with movement without pressure, echoing the need to redefine personal relationships with fitness.
The dialogue shifts towards finding enjoyment in exercise, especially for those who may feel demotivated by the routine aspects of training. Marcus empathizes with this sentiment, discussing his own structured training regimen that supports his hobbies, like skiing, illustrating the concept of exercising for pleasure and functionality rather than for aesthetic changes.
The discussion also covers the psychological hurdles in fitness, such as dealing with plateaus and maintaining motivation amidst slow progress. Marcus underscores the importance of understanding that progress is non-linear and managing expectations realistically to sustain long-term fitness goals.
Another significant portion of the conversation focuses on inclusive fitness practices. They discuss the challenges faced by individuals with bigger bodies, emphasizing the importance of creating positive and accommodating exercise environments free from judgment and stigma. Marcus advocates for a gentle approach to fitness that respects individual experiences and promotes healing from past traumas related to exercise.
Throughout the conversation, there's a recurring theme of questioning traditional fitness narratives and encouraging a more holistic, inclusive, and enjoyable approach to physical activity. The hosts and Marcus emphasize shifting the focus from weight-centric goals to embracing exercise as a part of a fulfilling lifestyle.

This episode was a toughie, not gonna lie.
It's really, really hard to have this discussion without potentially triggering some folks -- and we only know that because at one time, it triggered us, too. But this podcast is valuable because it does explore nuances, including the things less talked about in the anti-diet world.
At the end of the day, the desire for weight loss remains after we stop dieting. And for some people the question of: can I pursue this intentionally without regressing or sacrificing my values and myself? comes up a lot.
This is an individual question with individual answers, and we're having the conversation for people who want to have the conversation. Please note that if you have found peace in the skin you're in, this episode may not be for you. It's for people who feel lost, confused, and stuck and want to explore more angles of weight concerns post-recovery.

In this episode, the hosts really get into how scarcity affects us, especially when it comes to food. They start by breaking down what scarcity truly means—it's not just about running out of something, but feeling like you never have enough of what you need. This feeling can lead to behaviors like hoarding or binge-eating, not just with food, but in many parts of our lives.
They share personal stories and observations from society to show how the fear of not having enough drives us to overcompensate in different ways, like stockpiling items or overindulging when certain foods seem rare or unavailable. They talk about "window of opportunity" eating, when we eat not because we're hungry, but because we're afraid we won't get another chance to enjoy that particular food.
The hosts also delve into how these behaviors often stem from emotional needs rather than physical hunger. They discuss how past traumas or emotional gaps can lead us to act out of scarcity, affecting how we see our current situations, often without even realizing it.
Throughout the episode, they offer strategies to deal with these impulses, like mindfulness and asking yourself why you feel the need to act on scarcity. Understanding these feelings better can help us control them.
The episode ends on a thoughtful note, stressing the importance of self-awareness and kindness in facing scarcity. By recognizing and addressing the emotional roots of our behaviors, we can make more thoughtful choices that lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives. It's a really insightful conversation that helps us see how deep-seated feelings of scarcity can affect us and offers ways to handle them.

This body image centered episode delves into the distinctions between body positivity and body neutrality, offering a nuanced exploration of how individuals can relate to their bodies beyond conventional narratives of self-love.
The conversation begins by distinguishing body positivity from body neutrality. Originally, body positivity emerged from the fat activist movements of the 1960s, aiming to empower marginalized bodies, especially those of fat, Black women, and aligning with LGBTQ rights. In contrast, body neutrality is presented as a more muted, less emotionally charged approach, appealing to those who may find the ra-ra! enthusiasm of body positivity unreachable.
Stef, who hosts a Body Neutrality for Body Image Workshop, discusses the personal significance of body neutrality as a middle ground where you can acknowledge your actual feelings about your body—whether positive or negative—without allowing those feelings to dictate your self-worth or mood.
This epidosde emphasizes that adopting a body neutral stance is not an instant change but a gradual process of shifting one’s value system and managing emotional responses.

In this podcast episode, we explore the concept of Gentle Nutrition, explained as combining basic nutritional knowledge with body attunement. This 10th principle of Intuitive Eating is about recognizing how different foods affect one’s body while maintaining a non-restrictive approach to eating.
We also touch on personal experiences with nutritional adjustments post-recovery from eating disorders -- how and when do you think about nutrition when you're learning to allow all foods?? Does anti-diet have a "middle ground" or does it promote choosing "junk food"?
As with every discussion on this podcast, there is nuance.
Eating choices can be balanced with nutritional wisdom, like combining carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber for satisfying meals, or choosing warmer foods for comfort. It's leaning into attunement to our needs rather than just "rules".
We also want to mention our upcoming events including Stef's gentle nutrition course designed to support you in exploring these concepts without judgment or rigidity. And, in-person events in England this May!

This conversation discusses the challenges of confronting the aging process, with Sarah sharing a recent moment of seeing photographs of herself and thinking she looked...well, older. This introspection is mirrored by a conversation about Stef's Wednesday Weekly email, which talked about the "emergency" feeling of noticing differences in sagging skin and redistribution of body proportions approaching middle age.
As the conversation unfolds, it touches upon a broader philosophical reflection on aging, not just as a physical process but as an emotional and existential journey.
We contemplate the societal and personal implications of aging, from the fear of invisibility and loss of value in a youth-centric culture to the liberating aspects of growing older, such as gaining freedom.
We talk about the complexity of body image issues, drawing parallels between the struggles with weight and the acceptance of aging.
And don't forget, if you'd like to meet us for an in-person event, we've got two coming up in May 2024. We're teaming up with Marcus Kain of Strong Not Starving for an evening social & talks in Brighton, and a day retreat for nervous system regulation at Bournemouth Beach.

In this podcast episode, the hosts explore the complex relationship between food and emotional needs. The conversation begins with a reflection on Stef's Instagram post suggesting that food serves as a portal to solitude, comfort, pleasure, and escape, making the idea of changing one’s relationship with food seem like a sacrifice of essential coping mechanisms. The discussion delves into personal anecdotes and reflections on how food has occupied significant mental and emotional real estate, offering a sense of engagement or distraction during times of discomfort or emptiness.
The conversation shifts to the concept of "spoon theory" as a metaphor for energy and capacity management, illustrating how individuals have limited resources to cope with daily demands. This leads to a broader discussion on the importance of recognizing one’s own limits and allowing oneself the grace to rest without self-judgment. The episode emphasizes the significance of self-awareness and giving oneself permission to meet needs in more diverse and healthy ways, including acknowledging the importance of physical touch and emotional support.
Throughout, the hosts engage with their live community, incorporating questions and comments that enrich the conversation.

In this episode, we have a pretty cool chat with Stephanie Dodier, reformed dieter and coach for women post diet-culture. We dive deep into how society kinda messes with our heads, telling us we need to look a certain way to feel good about ourselves. Dodier brings up something called "the safety of conformity," which is basically about how we mix up feeling safe with actually being confident.
Stephanie shares some personal stories -- for example, about being taken to a Weight Watchers meeting when she was just 12. It was a tough moment that stuck with her, making her feel like her body was somehow "wrong." This story set the stage for a lot of what she talked about, like how we chase after this image society wants for us, thinking it'll make us happy or confident, but it's really about feeling safe from judgment.
The chat also ventures into how all of this safety stuff isn't just about weight. It ties into aging, health, and money. (Did you ever stop to think about how being worried about money is kind of similar to worrying about weight?) It's all about trying to fit into what we think we're supposed to be.
Towards the end, we disuss how facing doubts and insecurities is actually a part of being confident. The real journey is about exploring all of the parts of our lives where we might not feel secure -- and figuring out how to work with them.

In this playful and insightful episode, our hosts dive into the intriguing world of "What I Eat in a Day" videos and the complex feelings they evoke. They kick things off with a light-hearted banter about the unexpected topics that might arise in a conversation about daily diets, quickly steering the conversation towards the deeper curiosity and comparison that drive people towards these videos.
Our hosts explore the reasons behind the allure of watching what others eat, ranging from simple curiosity about others' lives to seeking guidance or reassurance in one's own eating habits. They acknowledge how social media, with its highlight reels, can skew perceptions of normalcy in eating, often showcasing unrealistic or highly curated snapshots of people's diets.
Interestingly, they touch upon the psychological aspect of watching others eat, discussing how it can serve as a form of vicarious eating for those restricting their diets or as a reassurance that one's own eating habits are okay. The conversation takes a thoughtful turn as they consider the potential harm in comparing one's eating habits with those depicted in such videos, especially for individuals with disordered eating patterns looking for a benchmark of "normalcy."
Wrapping up, they touch upon the concept of gentle nutrition, introducing an upcoming course focused on the mindset around nutrition rather than the specifics of what to eat. This approach aims to ease the tension around dietary choices, encouraging a more relaxed and self-compassionate approach to food and eating habits. The episode concludes on a light note, leaving listeners with food for thought about their own consumption of "What I Eat in a Day" content and how it impacts their relationship with food.

If we aren't celebrating pounds or dress sizes lost, how do we mark the "successes" of recovery? And how do we deal with the fact that no one else can "see" it?

The first in a four-part series called: Back to Basics to explore the foundational concepts of disordered eating and eating disorders from the ground floor. We hear from so many people who weren't aware that their experiences had a name, or that other people are dealing with them, too. In this first session, we're looking at the question: Do I Have a Problem? Is what I'm dealing with considered a disorder? Is it binge eating? Restricting? Orthorexia? What if I'm just an emotional eater?

Geneen Roth coined the terms "permitters" and "restrictors" to differentiate between two types of (disordered) eaters -- the latter, who tend to restrict food and adhere to food rules and regulations; and the former, who reject food rules and regulations. The rule-followers vs the rebels, if you will.
Which camp do you identify with?
What can we learn about ourselves and our relationship with food through the lens of these concepts? We'll discuss:

If we're no longer dieting, should we keep all of our trigger foods and/or "fear foods" in the house? Will we just end up eating them all and feeling MORE out of control? On the other hand, would it be restricting to not have them around? It's complicated! We're here to talk about the nuances of this question, including:

This week we talk to Marcus Kain, a nutrition coach and trainer specializing in binge eating recovery. Marcus, who also hosts the Strong Not Starving Podcast, shares with us his own journey into and through an eating disorder.
Marcus discusses his journey with food and body image issues, tracing back to childhood and the influence of his environment. He highlights the impact of early experiences, including body composition tests during adolescence, which led to a fixation on appearance. His career in the music industry further intensified these issues, with a focus on external validation and strict dieting.
The turning point came when Marcus met his future wife, who challenged his rigid mindset around food. Her perspective, coupled with guidance from a mentor, prompted Marcus to reevaluate his approach. He gradually shifted towards a more flexible and balanced relationship with food, acknowledging the importance of genuine connections and prioritizing overall health.

It emphasizes how mental hunger can feel like an insatiable desire for food, often arising from emotional and psychological factors rather than physical need. We also touch upon the significance of nervous system regulation and the complexities of achieving satisfaction while eating. The conversation highlights the role of satisfaction and self-compassion in dealing with the challenges of mental hunger.

Do you want to eat intuitively but find yourself only wanting "junk food"?
This is a common thing to hear from people trying healing their relationship with food.
A caveat to this conversation -- depending on where you are in this process, the approach to this conflict will be different. For example, wanting fun foods (and ONLY fun foods) at the beginning of recovery can be a really normal part of the healing process.
This conversation also considers the more chronic, ongoing experience of wanting only fun foods all the time.

If you're not in diet culture, you're probably in anti-diet culture.
Diet culture is the water we swim in. If you're learning about the ways in which dieting and thinness-as-idol has harmed you, chances are you've also been embracing new ways of thinking espoused by the "anti-diet mindset." Weight and body neutrality, fatphobia, health at every size, and intuitive eating are some of the terms and concepts you might be familiar with.
With this new approach comes a lot of good, good stuff.
So good that we can recover in it!
But what happens when we start over-identifying with it? Is that even possible?

Is there a difference between eating in front of a TV versus eating in front of a laptop or cell phone? And more importantly, how is this impacting us? How do we work on Intuitive Eating if we feel like we need this type of distraction, or can't break the habit? We'll also talk about:

When we stop trying to control food and body size, it can feel unfair. It's not fair that some people are smaller and others aren't. The intersection of weight and visibility is discussed at length in this episode. Weight can make us feel more visible or less visible because it is something our culture pays attention to. When we lose weight, we are "seen"; when we gain weight, we may become invisible. We discuss this topic from psychodynamic and somatic perspectives; how might our weight be protecting us? Note: this episode is not suggesting that weight is pathological. Body sizes are diverse among humans depending on a multitude of factors, and largely dependent on genetics. This episode looks at weight, trauma, and visibility as one part of a larger picture.

Psychologist Elaine Aron coined the term "Highly Sensitive Person" to refer to a subset of the population (estimated to be about 15-20%) who seem to have more sensitive nervous systems than the rest of the population. HSPs may be more easily overwhelmed and activated by stimuli in their internal and external environments, which may intersect with using food to help regulate the system. Has your body changed in recovery, or as a result of your disordered eating patterns? This can be hard enough in our fatphobic society, but there is often an added layer of “clothing grief.” Fashion can be part of a creative expression that feels like part of our identity; and its not secret that fashion culture caters to smaller bodies.
In this episode, we talk to Dacy of Mindful Closet. Dacy empowers women “to be their authentic selves through their clothes” even when body image feels like a barrier to that expression. We discuss:
