John Gunter explains what the writer is addressing and how the book should affect the Christian. The writer has something particular in mind when talking about sin that leads to death. If we read on a surface level, we may at times think that the writer is saying no Christian sins, but when taken as a whole, the book reveals something else.

Many of us may feel confidence or boasting are both bad words for Christians, but scripture does not see it this way. John talks about what it means to have a healthy confidence or boasting in God. He also talks about how many people have grown up with the exact opposite feeling concerning their salvation. Instead of boasting or confidence, many experience anxiety, isolation, inadequacy and a sense of doubt about whether they will be saved. What does scripture say about these things?

Sometimes it may not feel like Jesus struggled in life like we do. Many people feel so down about their sins, they can feel like isolated failures. This should not be the case. Scripture talks about how we all sin and fall short of what God desires for us. However, scripture tells us this does not put an end to us. Jesus knows what it is like to live life on earth and to be tempted. Hopefully, this sermon helps our view of who God is and how he sees us.

In this sermon at the Eagle Community Church of Christ in Mont Belvieu, TX, John Gunter talks about the relationship between work/rest, and how we must be intentional about getting the rest we need. For the second week, we talk about Jesus' interaction with the Pharisees concerning what could/could not be done on the Sabbath, and how Jesus reminded the Pharisees of when David ate the consecrated bread meant only for priests. This week at the Eagle Community Church of Christ in Mont Belvieu, TX, John Gunter talks about the importance of getting rest and viewing the Sabbath the way Jesus viewed it. We are all probably way too busy. The culture in the United States is one of working hard all the time. This shows up in the average hours per year we work compared to other countries. It also shows up in just how few vacation days we normally get, and how we often do not take all of the days we are given. John challenges the church to give some time back to God in an unapologetic time of rest, while thanking God for his gift, and relinquishing our perceived control on our lives.

Stay Rooted in your faith Mont Belvieu! Paul asks the Colossians to continue living their lives in Jesus. This is a challenge for today's church as much as it was for them. When thinking about a brand new year, what do you want for your life? Do you want to have a closer relationship with Jesus? What are you willing to do to get that? God shows us throughout scripture that he always stands with open arms waiting on the arrival of the sinner who repents. Are you willing to come back to him?
In Matthew's gospel, Jesus talks about building a foundation on the sand or the rock. One foundation is firm while the other is easily swept away to sea. Jesus said the rains will come either way, but you have to pick a foundation for your life.
