As the Israelites faced another transition in leadership they came up with a practical and rational solution. However a heart check revealed they were turning away from God in their search for a king. Transitions in our life are often upsetting times. Changes in government, students going off to college or moving out, job changes or retirement can leave us facing problems in need of solutions. Without God our solutions can be worse than our problems.

“Work out your salvation…for it is God who works in you…” This is the great paradox of God producing the fruit of the Spirit in our lives: It’s done miraculously by his grace and yet we also have a part in the labor. As we tap into the resources He’s given us, we see growth, however small. As we participate in His work in the world, we see amazing results. We can’t do it on our own, and yet God continually invites us to be a part of it.

We’ve all experienced great fruit, the kind of fruit that tastes better than candy – and it’s good for you. We all had that piece of fruit that has your mouth begging for another bite. The perfect watermelon at the peak of summer. Berries right off the bush that are so perfectly ripe, the juice runs down your arm. The banana that is the perfect yellow, not too green and no brown spots. The apple that is the perfect blend of sweet and tart! Fruit is the perfect way to describe what the Spirit produces in our faith.

Just like a flower produces a sweet fragrance, our acts of sacrifice produce a sweet aroma; that smells a lot like Jesus. The fruit of the Spirit produces the sweet aroma of Christ through our sacrificial service for the good of others. What gets in the way is our flesh. When our flesh gets involved. because we act selfishly, because we want to get something in return, because we’re serving for the wrong reasons; then our sacrifice starts to take on a foul smell.

May 5, 2024 Hobby gardens have grown over the last several years. It’s amazing what kind of yield people are able to get from these little suburban farms. Nobody plants a garden without expecting some kind of return, to yield something from their work. Scripture draws on a lot of images from agriculture, like producing spiritual fruit in our life. If we expect to yield fruit from a garden, then shouldn’t we look for spiritual fruit from our faith?

If we want to surrender our will, our control, and our life, then we will need to surrender our pride. Our pride works against us, causing us to believe we’re not really in need. That we’re really doing much better than we are. A huge barrier to surrendering to God is our pride – because we think we know better. We have trouble yielding as we believe the lie, “did God really say?” We fall for the deception that we are the exception to God’s law.

Following Jesus requires Christians to give up our right to own our life.“Denying yourself” is a key part to being a disciple of Jesus, to Follow Jesus. It requires us to obey Jesus as our King, not simply saying Jesus is the Christ, Jesus is Lord. But actually living it. Denying yourself requires submitting ourselves, our goals, our desires, and our plans to Christ.

Our struggle for control over every area of our life causes us to be controlling about our walk with God. Instead of allowing God to guide our steps, we’re prone to set boundaries around God in our effort to control Him. Do you realize how feeble that truly sounds, that we could somehow control and subdue God! That we could limit God access and keep Him away from certain parts of our life. Yet God is patient with us. We need to surrender our control in order to mature our faith!

April 7, 2024 We don’t like the idea of surrender. Surrender means that we give up, we quit, we’re throwing in the towel. Surrender is always associated with loss! We don’t like the idea of surrender because it means that we’re yielding, it means that bowing to someone else! In order for our faith to grow stronger, we actually need to learn that there is power through surrender. A big part of growing our faith requires surrender; especially when it comes to surrendering our will.

The question I want you to consider this morning is this: Has Jesus won your heart? I don’t mean this in a casual sense, I mean, has Jesus truly won your affection, have you given yourself fully to Him or have you ever felt stuck in your faith, wondering if you’re made for more! Whether believer or unbeliever, what has been holding you back from fully giving your heart to Jesus?

We’ve all had the thought, “that’s not how I would do things”; even in our faith. It’s not unusual to bring into question what God is doing, as we assume we have a better understanding of our situation than God. We believe that we have a clear idea of how God should respond in our situation, in our world, and in the lives of others. All of us have had moments in our faith journey where we thought; “that’s not how I would have done things.” This kind of thinking becomes challenging to our faith, because we’re not allowing God to be God as we presume to know better.

March 17, 2024 Crisis causes us to take our eyes off God. We doubt His love for us, His plans for us, and His power. In our deepest moments of worry over our present situation, we lose sight of God, we forget His goodness, and we lack the vision to see what or how He is working in our situation. I’m quick to think of Jesus as my savior; He paid the debt and penalty for my sin. Yet, I forget about the power and authority of Jesus! In our journey of faith, it’s important for us to have a picture of the nature and character of Christ that’s complete. The best picture of His authority is in the Resurrection. One of the great identity equalizers in life is the hospital gown. Whether you are rich or poor young or old, the hospital gown won’t discriminate, it seeks to make everyone uncomfortable. You can be sure of two things in a hospital gown – one you will always look ridiculous and two, no matter where you sit down, there will always be a cold spot. The hospital gown means there could be something wrong with you, it represents that you are not as strong or well as you thought you were. We struggle to navigating the unknowns of illness because part of our identity is being taken.

February 25, 2024 Depression pulls us down, causing us to sink into the depths of our own despair. It feels like we just keep getting dragged deeper into our own hopelessness. Like a kid dragging a beach ball to the bottom of the pool and releasing it to breach the surface, your faith is meant to bring you back to the surface when depression tries to drag you under.

If we’re honest, most of us are building our own little kingdoms and we forget that God wants us to participate in His Kingdom work. In the life of Noah, we see someone that intent on being a Kingdom builder as he literally builds the Ark. What we will discover in Noah’s story is that man continues to fall into depravity and a God who is still working out his plan to redeem this broken world.

After the fall, the once-imperishable bodies are now beginning to slowly decay and die. Adam and Eve are thrust out of their “forever home” into an unknown future. Everything that was once good is now turned on its head. Everything we will read about after the fall is the result of Adam and Eve’s sin. In fact, the mess we experience today is the result of this original sin. After the fall, humanity continues to struggle with community.

Imagine what the soul goes through when a believer fears that their sin will be found out by God. This cop image of God sees Him having mirrored sunglasses, handcuffs and a tazer gun; like a cosmic lawman looking to arrest any rule breakers. In Genesis 3 we read about the fall of man as sin enters God’s creation. It’s here that we first encounter an image of God that gets distorted by sin, but when we view it from the top, we see a God that is gentle and loving.

Our rebellion broke our relationship with God, causing discord between us and God. But we serve a God that’s a peacemaker, restoring our fellowship with Him. God wasn’t content with our relationship being broken with Him; God moves toward us in our discord caused by our sin. The Great Peacemaker has given everyone a path toward relational restoration through Jesus.

What every kid discovers is that joy we experience over a toy that we wanted so badly is temporary. There will always be something else we want, with just as much passion as we had for the last gift. We have a tendency to focus on the things that make us happy in the moment as we trade the eternal joy that comes for God= for a quick fix of temporary happiness. Christmas reminds us of where our true sense of joy comes from.

If you were going to start a movement that would change the world, who would you go after, who would you want to get on your side in order to be an influencer? You’d probably focus on the famous and influential people for their social pull, not the people on the fringe of society. What’s amazing about our Savior is that He was focused on what He can do for people, not what they can do for Him.

Our new series, “First Loser,” looks at the apostle Thomas. We trace his development as a disciple, and the caustic cynicism he expresses that turns instantly into radiant faith when he meets the risen Christ. For many, being tossed in jail would have marked the end of the journey. Nobody would have faulted Paul if he focused on his release in order to continue his mission after he gets sprung from jail. In Paul’s life, we see someone that faithful to the very end. Paul lived his life on mission as he went from town to town to testify what God had done for him. Paul was not deterred, he never relented from sharing the gospel.

Passion requires care, we need to tend to our passion, otherwise our passion has a way of fizzling out. Tending to our passion is needed for our hobbies or favorite activities. If you stop reading up on your teams, if you stop watching your show for a long time, if you stop reading up on your favorite cause then your passion has a way of fading. This is especially true in our faith. Our passion for growing our faith and telling others about Jesus will fade if we’re not careful to maintain our passion for this part of our faith.

If sharing our faith were a destination, then we tend to give up on the destination because the journey is not going the way we want it to. We need to develop a sense of peace and joy over being faithful to God’s call. Sharing our faith will not always go according to plan, but we must remain resolute in living out our calling to be a witness. What we will see in this leg of Paul’s journey is how he handles his calling when things don’t go according to plan.

One of the most daunting callings God has placed on every believer is to be a witness to the world. This feels overwhelming, and time consuming, if we’re being honest! In the daily practice of our faith, being a witness to the world is a calling placed on the life of every believer. The early church practiced their faith and prioritized their calling to be a witness. Their witness was a byproduct to the way they lived out their faith. This morning, we will see how the church continues to expand as we take a look at Paul’s Journey.

Like a stone thrown into a pool of water the Church begins to spread out from Jerusalem out to Judea, then to neighboring Samaria, and begins to make its way out towards the ends of the earth. Unlikely additions are made to the church and opposition ratchets up. The Expansion of the Church continues as faithful Christians put their faith into action and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

When I focus on the ways God is providing for me, then I’m reminded that God is good when life is not. However, my faith drifts when I get too focused on my struggle – I fail to see the spiritual blessings from God in my life because I get more focused on what God isn’t doing, instead of seeing what God is doing. Trials is an area of our life that we’re all looking for a miracle. But what happens to our faith when that miracle doesn’t come?

Do you believe in miracles? If we’re being honest, this is church after-all, I think we believe in the possibility of miracles, but we’re probably more likely to seek a logical explanation for the events we witness instead of looking for God in the miracle. Perhaps a better question is, “does my faith believe in miracles?”

We conclude our series, God’s Creativity in Us, by looking at story-telling, specifically in Jesus’ favorite form, the parable. We look at what parables were, and a phrase they often included, “the kingdom of God.” Jesus used parables with wild, exaggerated imagery and drama to get our attention and draw it not just toward moral lessons or philosophical ideas, but to Himself and what He was up to in the world.

Triumphant Faith doesn’t happen overnight and without deliberate practice on the part of the Follower of Jesus. James emphasizes that just as a farmer patiently waits for the harvest, Christians must practice patience, trust in God's timing, and remain steadfast in their faith. The examples of the prophets and Job illustrate the importance of enduring suffering without grumbling, as it refines and strengthens one's faith. Deliberate prayer is a powerful tool in the life of a Christian within the community of the Church.

Every believer wants to have a deep faith; the kind of faith that can stand up during difficult times, that believes despite seasons of doubt, a faith that follows despite our feelings.

The book of James is like a gym for our faith, giving us the tools and knowledge to build a faith that’s lasting. James lays out for us several characteristics we should develop as followers of Christ.

How do your prayers start? I know my prayers typically start with, “God, please…God please give me, do for me, do for someone, God please show up, be there, intervene, make this happen, heal this person…” These are honest prayers, but it causes to relate to God for the purpose of telling Him our needs. This won’t help us grow in our relationship with God. Jesus shows us how to honor God in our prayers.

Speaking with God through prayer allows the believer to communicate with the Almighty Creator of the universe and by doing so, we acknowledge His presence with us and our dependence on Him for everything in our life. Faith is demonstrated in the presence of our doubt. Faith is how we trust God above our feelings, it’s a belief in God’s ability above my own. Therefore, if I’m going to receive God’s blessing for my life, I need to exercise my faith. In my doubt, the devil wants me to feel like less of a believer, but it is my doubt that presents me with the opportunity to have faith. To put my trust in God and His promises as I receive God’s blessing.

We have more opportunities to live out and share our faith at our jobs than we realize. I think what really stands in the way are the perceived barriers we have built around our jobs. God is looking for disciples that are willing to count the cost of following Him and willing live out the Great Commission anywhere. That means looking at our jobs as a mission field that we can go and make disciples.

We end our exploration of the gospel of John with the restoration of Peter in chapter 21. Jesus asks Peter three times "Do you love me?" as a response to Peter's three denials of Christ. In this interaction, He forgives and heals Peter thoroughly, preparing him for the kingdom work at hand. We look at how Jesus doesn't call us to be perfect or even well-qualified, but to follow Him, care for the people he loves, and let Him figure out the details.

Water is important for the body – water is critical for our cells, it helps our digestion, we need it for our survival. A person can live for several days, even weeks without food, but can last only about 3 days without water. The importance of water to our life, makes water the perfect analogy for understanding our faith. Water is used throughout Scripture to illuminate Scripture and to help the believer understand biblical truth. In our text from John 7, Jesus makes a bold claim about Himself and the coming helper.

In John 6, a crowd wanted to follow the “product” of Jesus, not the person. This kind of relationship is very transactional, not transformational. There was a gap in understanding how to relate to Jesus the person and not just viewing Jesus as a means to an end. People today sill have trouble following Jesus. We follow Jesus knowing we’ve got eternity covered, but are we truly experiencing the relationship God desires for us to have with Him?

The doctrine we hold about the Holy Spirit is vital to our faith because it impacts how we relate to God and Jesus. God has revealed His nature to us, as we’ve been discussing, God exists three, in one, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Ignoring one aspect of God’s nature changes how we relate to God. We cannot form a relationship with God by focusing only on the Father and the Son, we must have a balanced approach in trying to relate to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Many other systems of faith recognize Jesus as someone who lived – but what they believe about Jesus is distinctly different than what the Bible has told us. Jesus Christ is probably one of the most controversial figures in history. He’s recognized as being a great spiritual teacher, as a prophet, or someone who managed to live a really good life. But these views fail to give Jesus the proper authority that He deserves because they’re focused on only one part of His ministry or character. Our doctrine about Jesus matters because it impacts eternity.

A common misconception for believers is that “I don’t need church to have a relationship with God.” That is true, only in part. Church is not a requirement for us to have a relationship with God. But we will never fully experience all that a relationship with God offers, without the church. The church is the place that we learn how to practice our faith, the place we glorify God, and the place we experience the presence of God. Our misconception about the necessity of church may be rooted in our misunderstanding of the purpose of church.

The story of the fall, salvation and sanctification is the story of God restoring his image in us. We were made perfect in the garden, but chose sin and therefore defaced – but never destroyed – God’s image in us. Jesus untwisted the story on the cross and covered our sin with his perfection. The work of sanctification, God making us holy, is the painstaking restoration of the image of God in us.

None of us would like someone determining who we are and how we should act based on a few sound bites and another person’s personal feelings. Yet, this is exactly how we treat God. We determine God’s character and nature based on a few images we’ve gleaned from church and our personal feelings of how God should act. We build an image of God that looks a lot like us, but looks very different from who God has revealed Himself to be. God has given us His Word to help us understand who He is and how we should relate to Him.

One part of loving one another is how we treat those around us – treating people the way we want to be treated. It’s making the choice to be loving, even if we don’t feel like it. Another part of loving people is being willing to invite them into our world – being willing to open up the doors and let someone in. I can respond to someone in love, but it is entirely different for me to reach out to someone and invite them into my personal space.

The bible gives us guidelines for how we should treat each other, these are the family rules for believers. The “one another” statements communicate the characteristics that we should be striving for in our relationship with each other. The way we treat people is important because it’s a reflection of our relationship with God. When it comes to unity, it’s easy for us to rally around a cause, but Jesus wants us to be unified as a family value.

There is something about being able to come home that brings about feelings of comfort and security. Even when you’ve been away on a long trip for work or vacation, there is that desire to be home. There is something about home that brings about these feelings of comfort, security, and safety in our heart. In our text for today, Jesus uses that deep seated desire for home to reveal something about relationship with our Heavenly Father.

You put a bunch of people into a vehicle for an extended period of time and suddenly you discover the many ways you’re not like Jesus. Have you ever noticed that phenomenon? Progressive or Progressing in our Faith| Sanctity of Life

The abortion debate is so destructive because of this topic’s ability to divide and destroy relationships. Critical to understanding Scripture is a yielded spirit, one that is open to God’s direction on any given matter. Some matters are cut and dry and some are gray. This is not a cut and dry matter because the variables of the matter can be shifted.

Marriage is God’s idea and God’s gift to humankind for those that choose to enter into this covenant relationship. Culture has worked to undermine marriage and devalue marriage. Marriage is seen as something that is disposable because culture is consistently pushing us toward the celebration of self.

Culture says sexuality is an expression of how a person feels about others with no regard for the boundaries set within Scripture. Culture has been at work to normalize the areas of our sexuality that God has warned us about. God has given us these warnings because He understands better than we do, the hurt and heartache that comes if we decide to ignore the boundaries He has set.

Culture is redefining gender which is complicating how we relate to one another, creating discord, and eroding our ability to be civil with one another. The result of this culture shift is confusion and disunity. At the root of this discord is the brokenness stemming from our pride as we attempt to redefine who we are.

I believe there is a holy longing inside us to please God with our life. In light of God’s love and grace there is a desire to respond with something of value. Our faith derails as our heart moves from pleasing to earning. Instead of responding to God’s grace we try to earn the salvation that we’ve been freely given. It’s critical for us to understand how to properly respond to this longing with our life.

It doesn’t matter how confident you are or how many accomplishments you have – all of us have a hardwired desire to be part of a community. This is not an introvert extrovert deal; this is a built in need to be part of a group – to know that we have people we can go to and be ourselves around. When a person says yes to a relationship with Jesus, they become family. This is what we all truly desire, to belong.

In the last recorded words of Paul, he gives the final charge to Timothy: proclaim the Word boldly and with love, fulfill your calling. Paul hands over the ministry network to Timothy with some final words of encouragement and farewell.

It’s natural for us to protect the things we value, the things that are important, and the things we love. We want to ensure that no harm comes to the things that truly matter in our life. 2 Timothy 1| Reminder: Power of the Gospel

What areas of your life do you find that you need reminders for from time to time? Do you need a reminder to eat healthy, to take a break, to have your quiet time, to make time for family? A well-timed reminder provides the subtle course correction we need to keep us on track or get us back on track. A good reminder can reestablish our values, get us back on track with our faith, and help us focus on what’s truly important. Paul is Timothy a reminder in 2 Timothy.

Are you Wealthy… Spiritually? Let's unpack what Paul seems to speak on as we read 1 Timothy 6.

The problem with the early church, and the problem with us today, is that we look to things other than God for contentment. We look to earthly relationships, our finances, our possessions, and the things we can do to be a source of contentment. However, when these things fail us or let us down, then we will find ourselves discontent once again. Paul knows the value of contentment when it comes to dealing with our desires; especially our desire for wealth.

What is your current view of relationship within Christian community? Do you see church as a group of likeminded people to learn about Jesus with? Is church an organization and we’re all trying our best to represent the company as we go about our business? Or perhaps the church is a gathering of Jesus people, some you learn the name of, but otherwise you’d have trouble recognizing them at the mall? God desires for you to have deep, abiding relationships with people in the church; this is our basis for how we relate to one another.

All of us prone to have our faith polluted by outside influences as we mistakenly blend our faith with other belief systems. People try to mix the feel-good vibes of other faith systems like Hinduism, Buddhism, and various pagan practices in order to make a faith that fits them better. The flaw in this kind of logic is that we distort our image of God. Paul encourages Timothy and us to exercise wisdom.

Paul gets into the nuts and bolts of what it means to be a Jesus community in the world. He discusses how we are citizens of heaven who live on earth and how we should relate to earthly society and government. He finally talks about what it means to live as men and women transformed by the gospel.

Written as a public letter of encouragement and support 1 Timothy opens with a warning as part of the job description for the recipient Timothy. While there is a lot of teaching out in the world today if it takes away from the pure teaching of the Gospel it can have dire effects on our faith.

In this short exchange, the whole story of humanity’s fall and redemption is re-told and re-enacted by Jesus. Jesus appears to them for a moment at the end after explaining that He’s been there the whole time, drawing Israel and all of humanity toward himself and toward redemption.

Trusting people is something all of us can identify with, whether it’s a lack of trust or total trust toward others. All of us need to develop key relationships with people we can trust. Especially in the area of our faith. If we lack trust in God and His Word, then how can possibly fulfill God’s purpose for our life? Trust is vitally important to our faith.

We look at a tender moment between Jesus and a leper who confronts him just as the Lord finishes the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus shows us what the kingdom looks like by welcoming those like the leper who have been excluded from society and giving them a place the table.

“You are saved by grace,” this is a wonderful, repost worthy quote to share, but it lacks the important context. In light of God’s grace, we should be growing in grace. The believer struggles in their faith when grace is viewed as a one-time event that brought then into faith, but is not seen as something that sustains the believer’s faith.

Taken out of context many Bible verses can appear to offer blessings or promises that are out of line with the rest of Scripture. Philippians 4:13 seems to offer blank check promises that will leave us with a bankrupt faith relying on a strength that comes from us and not from God. - Join me as we dive in to see what Paul is really getting at!

As Christ followers, we must resist the temptation to build our faith on these quotable sayings divorced from their context. When we don’t have context, we lose understanding.

Personal struggles make us feel like we are the only ones going through our pain. We feel forgotten, we feel like we’ve done something wrong, and we feel like nobody knows the true pain of what we’re going through. It’s not uncommon for someone to turn a destructive habit as a means of coping with their circumstance. But God offers an alternative path through His Word to guide us through our struggle.

Paul calls us to do life together in gracious community, loving each other as Christ loves us. As we fellowship together, we “practice heaven,” seeing glimpses of what eternity will look like as we commune with our Christian brothers and sisters.

As God’s ambassadors, we’re His representatives to the hurting and broken in this world. To share the Good News of Jesus as we communicate His message of hope. We are not acting of our own volition; we are responding to the commission we’ve been given by Jesus. This is how God wants us to live out our faith to the world.
