Welcome to General Conference Convos, the podcast where we...have conversations about general conference! Pretty straight forward. I'm your host, Kayelynn, and I'm super excited to be here with you, studying the words of our living prophets, apostles, and chosen leaders.
Sister Muñoz Spannaus shares the story of David and Goliath and says that, while David's first stone defeated the giant, he was prepared with 5 stones. She gives some examples of "stones" we could have in our hands to prepare us for the "giants" in our lives.
“While David used only one stone to kill Goliath, he was prepared with five. With five! This makes me think about how I can prepare myself to face the world.
What if each of David’s stones represented a strength we need to be triumphant in our lives? What could those five stones be? I thought of these possibilities:
- The stone of my love for God.
- The stone of my faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ.
- The stone of the knowledge of my true identity.
- The stone of my daily repentance.
- The stone of my access to God’s power.”

Elder Bangerter speaks about our individual proposes here on earth and how our choices in the premortal life direct our life now. We can use our agency to fulfill the purpose God has planned for us.
“Those premortal promises and blessings are called your foreordination. “The doctrine of foreordination applies to all members of the Church.” Foreordination does not guarantee that you will receive certain callings or responsibilities. These blessings and opportunities come in this life as a result of your righteous exercise of agency, just as your foreordination in your premortal life came as a result of righteousness.”
“Knowing who you are begins with understanding God’s foreordained blessings bestowed upon you before you were ever born on this earth. Our Heavenly Father desires to reveal to you your personal foreordination, and He will do so as you seek to learn and follow His will.”

Elder Cook 's talk revolves around a line from Christ's intercessory prayer - that we should be one with each other and one with Christ. He talks about the relatively simple task of becoming one with Christ and being unified with others in him. A large portion of his talk discusses choices, agency, and free will, and how we are free to choose what we value and what we spend our time on. And in doing so, we choose to follow and be one in Christ or not and include other along the way.
“On the recent cover of a major university alumni publication, a prominent biologist-professor asserts, ‘There’s no room for free will.’ Not surprisingly, the professor is quoted in the article as saying, ‘There’s no such thing as God, … and there’s no free will, … and this is a vast, indifferent, empty universe.’ I could not disagree more strongly.”
An invitation: Think about how your decisions are influenced by things around you - people, weather, your biology, etc. And give yourself grace for the things you can’t control and empower yourself over what you can.

Elder De Feo talks about seeing with our spiritual eyes. He gives three principles for how we can focus on Christ and work on our spiritual vision.

Elder Bednar’s talk is all about finding peace and stillness in a loud and chaotic world. He talks about Christ being the rock we build our foundation on and places and times we can do that so that we have assurance and confidence that everything in our life will be ok.
“I believe the Lord’s admonition to “be still” entails much more than simply not talking or not moving. Perhaps His intent is for us to remember and rely upon Him and His power “at all times and in all things, and in all places that [we] may be in.” Thus, “be still” may be a way of reminding us to focus upon the Savior unfailingly as the ultimate source of the spiritual stillness of the soul that strengthens us to do and overcome hard things.”
When have you felt that your faith has been a shelter in the storm?
“The symbolism of Christ as the “rock” upon whom we should build the foundation of our lives is most instructive. Please note in this verse that the Savior is not the foundation. Rather, we are admonished to build our personal spiritual foundation upon Him.”

President Eyring speaks about the temple and the power of temple covenants. He shares a story about a time he and his wife found peace and comfort during a hard time because of their covenants. And he shared a few things President Nelson has promised us in recent years about temple attendance.
“Perhaps this statement from President Thomas S. Monson best illustrates what Kathy and I felt on that unforgettable night. “As we attend the temple, there can come to us a dimension of spirituality and a feeling of peace. … We will grasp the true meaning of the words of the Savior when He said: ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. … Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid [John 14:27].’”"
How has expressing emotions - to family or friends or a spouse - helped you feel more at peace?
“It is through the sealing covenants in the temple that we can receive the assurance of loving family connections that will continue after death and last for eternity. Honoring marriage and family covenants made in temples of God will provide protection from the evil of selfishness and pride.”
How can you be sympathetic to those who don’t fit the ideal family found in The Family: A Proclamation to the World?

Elder Gerard's talk is all about, as the title says, integrity. He talks about the need for integrity in our lives - the ability to stick to our morals and beliefs in our relationships with God, others, and ourselves.
“Living a life of integrity requires us to be true to God, to each other, and to our divine identity. Integrity flows from the first great commandment to love God. Because you love God, you are true to Him at all times. You understand that there is right and wrong and there is absolute truth—God’s truth. Integrity means we do not lower our standards or behavior to impress or to be accepted by others. You “do what is right” and “let the consequence follow.””
When have you had integrity in your beliefs or goals - whether to yourself or with others?
“A life of integrity is not a life of perfection; it is a life in which we strive every day to foremost be true to God and within that context to be true to others.”

Elder Soares speaks powerfully of the temple and the confidence - power, reassurance, and strength - that we receive through covenants. He focuses specifically on temples and the true goal of temples - this covenant confidence. He shares a few stories of people in the scriptures and also people who he knows who have that confidence so obviously in their lives.
“I pray that we may be spiritually renewed by the inspired messages from our leaders this weekend and rejoice in what I love to call “covenant confidence through Jesus Christ.” This confidence is the quiet yet certain assurance of receiving the blessings that God promises for those who keep their covenants and is so needed amid the challenging circumstances of our day.”
What confidence have you received from your covenant relationship with God?
“I wondered if sometimes we get lost in the excitement of having new temples in our cities and communities and neglect the holier purpose of the sacred covenants made in the temple.”

Elder Dushku’s talk is all about personal revelation and how individual and unique it is. He tells the story of the First Vision and then reassures us that if we never have an experience like that, we are still faithful. We can be spoken to in a million very personal ways.
“And yet, every one of us is different. No two people experience God’s light and truth in exactly the same way. Take some time to think about how you experience the light and Spirit of the Lord.”
How do you feel the Spirit in your life?
“These are some of my rays. You have had your own experiences—your own light-filled bursts of testimony. As we recognize, remember, and gather these rays “together in one,” something wonderful and powerful begins to happen. “Light cleaveth unto light”—“truth embraceth truth.” The reality and power of one ray of testimony reinforces and combines with another, and then another, and another. Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a ray and there a ray—one small, treasured spiritual moment at a time—there grows up within us a core of light-filled, spiritual experiences. Perhaps no one ray is strong enough or bright enough to constitute a full testimony, but together they can become a light that the darkness of doubt cannot overcome.”

Sister Dennis speaks about symbols and the power of symbols to teach us deeper meanings and remind us of important things. She specifically talks about covenants being symbols and the symbols used in the ordinances we participate in to make covenants. She also covers garments and the symbols they are in our lives. She also reminds us that missions and marriage are not a requirement for going through the temple for our endowment. Anyone who is eighteen and feels they are ready should talk to their bishop about preparing. She ends her talk with her testimony of covenants and the power they have had in her life.
“Baptism by immersion is the symbolic gate through which we enter into a covenant relationship with God. Being immersed in the water and coming up again is symbolic of the Savior’s death and Resurrection to new life. As we are baptized, we symbolically die and are born again into the family of Christ and show we are willing to take His name upon us. We ourselves embody that covenant symbolism. In the New Testament we read, “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” With our baptism we symbolically put on Christ.”
How do you strive to keep your baptismal covenant?
“The garment of the holy priesthood is deeply symbolic and also points to the Savior. When Adam and Eve partook of the fruit and had to leave the Garden of Eden, they were given coats of skins as a covering for them. It is likely that an animal was sacrificed to make those coats of skins—symbolic of the Savior’s own sacrifice for us. Kaphar is the basic Hebrew word for atonement, and one of its meanings is “to cover.” Our temple garment reminds us that the Savior and the blessings of His Atonement cover us throughout our lives. As we put on the garment of the holy priesthood each day, that beautiful symbol becomes a part of us.”

President Holland gives powerful, personal testimony. He talks about the death of his wife and his recent health struggles and how that has changed his view of the gospel and life. He also spends much of his talk speaking about the power of prayer, even in the life of Christ. And he closes his talk with his testimony of Christ, His Atonement, and the gospel.
“In my profound gratitude for all this, I join G. K. Chesterton, who said once ‘that thanks are the highest form of thought; and … gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.’ With my own ‘happiness doubled by wonder,’ I thank all of you and thank my Father in Heaven, who heard your prayers and blessed my life.”
What moments can you think of today - this week, this month - that made you happy? And how can you double that happiness with the wonder of an endlessly loving God?
“My beloved friends, our prayers are our sweetest hour, our most “sincere desire,” our simplest, purest form of worship. We should pray individually, in our families, and in congregations of all sizes. We are to employ prayer as a shield against temptation, and if there be any time we feel not to pray, we can be sure that hesitancy does not come from God, who yearns to communicate with His children at any and all times. Indeed, some efforts to keep us from praying come directly from the adversary. When we don’t know how or exactly for what to pray, we should begin, and continue, until the Holy Spirit guides us into the prayer we should be offering. This approach may be the one we have to invoke when praying for our enemies and those who despitefully use us.”

Hello hello! It’s been a while! But I’m back. And I have just a couple announcements and housekeeping before we get into this next season of General Conference Conversations.
When I started this project two years ago, I was really just getting into Podcasts. And I fell in love with a lot of Come, Follow Me podcasts specifically that helped with my CFM study and helped me to have more comments at church and just get more out of my studies generally. I didn’t see any podcasts or YouTube channels that did that with General Conference talks, though. And I thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it be awesome if there was something like CFM for Conference talks? We discuss them in Relief Society and Elders’ Quorum. But we don’t get to all 30 or so talks every six months. It would be really great to have some deeper study of the Conference talks like we have with scriptures.”
And so, General Conference Conversations was born. I had a lot of big ideas when I started out. Having guests. Getting really deep into these talks. Lots of side studies and extras. And I’ve done a little bit of that since. But it turns out podcasting is a lot of work. And with the number of talks and episodes, it can get really overwhelming. I’ve also been very open with how my life has changed over the last couple of years. I’ve moved several times. I got a new job. Traveled for that job. And so my routines have changed. My availability has changed. So the podcast has changed.
And it’s going to change again in a couple different ways. The episodes are going to be a little bit condensed. I’ll still talk about each talk, but they may be a bit different and a bit shorter than in the past. I also really want to embrace the “Conversations” part of General Conference Conversations. I want your thoughts and feelings and insights. So I really need your help with comments and emails and any other discussion opportunities.

“For the Sake of Your Posterity” by Elder Godoy is all about how our actions affect our children, grandchildren, etc.- particularly when it comes to church activity. I had a hard time with this one, simply because I worry it opens up room to judge those who are inactive, less active, struggling, or are not members of the church at all. So, instead of questions, here is an invitation:
Think of people in your life who have left the church, are struggling with their testimony, have turned down your invitations to meet with missionaries or come to church things, and really try to understand why (maybe even ask them why!). Don’t disregard their reasons as too trivial or small or silly. Approach it from a place of love and see what you find.

Elder Soares talks about two principles important in a healthy marriage: all are alike unto God, and treat others the way you want to be treated.
How can you use these two principles in any and all relationships in your life - not just romantic?
He also talks about how nurturing and presiding (the roles given to women and men respectively in the Family Proclamation) are not mutually exclusive.
How can you nurture and preside in your home (or prepare to)?

Elder Uchtdorf’s talk “Our Heartfelt All” is a beautiful testimony of effort and how to have Christ in every part of our lives. Here are some questions to consider:
“To the Lord, the value of the donation was measured not by the effect it had on the treasury but by the effect it had on the heart of the donor.”
What effect does something like tithing have on you?
“But how is this possible? To many of us, such a standard of whole-souled commitment seems out of reach. We are already stretched so thin. How can we balance the many demands of life with our desires to offer our whole souls to the Lord?”
Do you feel this way? What in Elder Uchtdorf’s talk helps with this anxiety?
“To sacrifice means to give something up in favor of something more valuable…Consecration is different from sacrifice in at least one important way. When we consecrate something, we don’t leave it to be consumed upon the altar. Rather, we put it to use in the Lord’s service. We dedicate it to Him and His holy purposes.10 We receive the talents that the Lord has given us and strive to increase them, manifold, to become even more helpful in building the Lord’s kingdom.”

President Nelson’s talk “The Power of Spiritual Momentum” gives amazing suggestions for ending conflicts in our lives. Here are some questions to consider:
President Nelson calls for us to end conflicts in our hearts, homes, and lives. What conflicts do you think of?
What ignites spiritual momentum in your life?
What does your covenant path look like?
How does God work in your life?
How do you see the Lord intervening in your life and the lives of those around you?
Think about the conflicts you thought about before. How can you "seek an end" - take the first step - to ending them?
Consider President Nelson’s suggestions:
- Get on the covenant path and stay there.
- Discover the joy of daily repentance.
- Learn about God and how He works.
- Seek and expect miracles.
- End conflict in your personal life.
And his prophetic promises: “As you act on these pursuits, I promise you the ability to move forward on the covenant path with increased momentum, despite whatever obstacles you face. And I promise you greater strength to resist temptation, more peace of mind, freedom from fear, and greater unity in your families.”

Self-reliance is a hard topic for me, but while reading Elder Martinez’s talk “Teaching Self-Reliance to Children and Youth,” I got a different perspective on what self-reliance is on a principle level and why we push it. Here are some questions to consider while you study:
How are you spiritually self reliant? How are you temporally self-reliant?
“[Luke 2:52] refers to growth and learning in the spiritual aspect, favor with God; the social aspect, favor with man; the physical aspect, stature; and the intellectual aspect, wisdom.”
Have you ever thought about making and working on goals in these 4 areas (even if you are not a child, a youth, don’t have children or youth, and don’t work with children or youth)?
If the phrase self-reliance is hard for you (it is for me), how can you think of self-reliance differently? My suggestions in today’s episode were “self-improvement” or “becoming a well-rounded person.” But how can you use the principles of self-reliance and the why behind it to change your perspective on self-reliance?

Eder Cook’s talk “Conversion to the Will of God” talks powerfully of the effects of conversion and the opportunity we have to be Christ’s hands in this world. Here are some questions to ponder:

Elder Ochoa said: “Coming unto Christ means more than just thinking about Him or talking about Him or even loving Him. It means following Him. It means living the way He teaches us to live. And for all of us, that means repenting, without delay.”
What does this look like in your life? What does this look like in your church experience? And how can you encourage this in your life and in your wards and branches?

My first guest joined me today! Emily Castaneda is one of my favorite people, and we had such an amazing conversation about family history and our experiences with God’s hand in our lives.
My invitation is to read Elder Gong’s suggestions of all the ways to do family history (not just FamilySearch and indexing) and make a goal to connect with the people in your life in those ways. Hear their stories. Ask about cool spiritual experiences they’ve had. Connection is so so important.

Elder Kearon’s talk “He Is Risen with Healing in His Wings: We Can Be More Than Conquerors” is such a beautiful ode to the atonement of Jesus Christ. Here are some questions to think about as you study this talk:
Do you feel you are in a literal or metaphorical survival story?
“Fear not.
I know your sorrows, and I have come to deliver you.
I will not leave you.
My name is upon you, and my angels have charge over you.
I will do wonders among you.
Walk with me; learn of me; I will give you rest.
I am in your midst.
You are mine.”
How do these promises assure you?
“From the depths of His atoning suffering, the Savior imparts hope you thought was lost forever, strength you believed you could never possess, and healing you couldn’t imagine was possible.”
How have you seen or are you seeing this in your life?
His promise: “You are a survivor, you can heal, and you can trust that with the power and grace of Jesus Christ, you will overcome and conquer.”

Today, I reviewed Elder Holland’s talk “Fear Not: Believe Only!” I didn’t have a whole lot of questions today, but here are the ones I asked:
“My plea today to our youth, and to you parents and adults who advise them, is to begin your search for happiness by embracing the bounty we have already received from the giver of every good gift. At precisely the moment many in the world are asking deep questions of the soul, we ought to be answering with the “good news” of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
What bounty from the "giver of every good gift" do you see in your life? How does that bounty relate to the gospel of Jesus Christ?
His apostalic invitations: “We must commit ourselves fully to that gift of life and run to the aid of those who are at risk of giving up this sacred gift. Leaders, advisers, friends, family—watch for signs of depression, despair, or anything hinting of self-harm. Offer your help. Listen. Make some kind of intervention as appropriate…In a world that so desperately needs all the light it can get, please do not minimize the eternal light God put in your soul before this world was. Talk to someone. Ask for help.”

Today, I talked about Elder Kacher’s talk “Ladder of Faith.” And we’re talking about, you guessed it, faith! Here are some questions to think about:
Is there something happening in your life that you don’t want to happen? Are you able to see other ways the Lord is blessing you or guiding you?
How do you increase your faith in Jesus Christ?
What miracles have you seen in your life today?
“Am I stripped of pride?
Do I give place in my heart for the word of God?
Do I allow my afflictions to be consecrated for my gain?
Am I willing to let my will be swallowed up in the will of the Father?
If I have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, can I feel so now?
Do I let God prevail in my life?”
Consider his invitation: “May we plant the seeds of faith deep in our hearts. May we nourish these seeds as we bind ourselves to the Savior by honoring the covenants we have made with Him.”

Today, I talk about Elder Andersen’s talk “Following Jesus: Being a Peacemaker.” It’s a long one today. Here are some questions to think about as you study.
How have you seen the good in the internet/social media? The bad? How can you be more aware of the negative impact in your life and actively change it? I spoke about following people with different opinions as a way to try to get away from the echochamber of social media.
What are your thoughts on being “Children of God” as Elder Ansdersen talks about it?
What radical things did the Savior teach that had the world around Him (those not of his faith and of his faith) rejecting and hating Him? How can we follow His example?
Can there not be lines at all? How can we not draw lines in the sand that we can’t cross later?
How can you discern between when to speak up and when to stay quiet?

Today, It’s Sister Aburto’s talk “We Are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” I adored this talk, and I adore Sister Aburto. Here’s a recap of my questions.
What would change in your church life if you started thinking of yourself as a disciple of Christ?
“brought to the Savior, “nourished by the good word of God,” and given opportunities to serve.”
How have you seen these three things in your worship?
How can you assist converts, long term members, and anyone in these things?
“As “the peaceable followers of Christ,” we are striving to become “of one heart and one mind” and to be humble; submissive; gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; temperate in all things; diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; full of faith, hope, and charity; and abounding in good works. We are striving to become like Jesus Christ.”
How can you develop these things through your church service? And encourage these things in those around you?

Today, I talk about President Ballard’s talk from Saturday Morning Session, “Missionary Work Blessed My Life Forever.” Surprise surprise, I talk about missionary work! I got a little rambly… To recap, here are some things to think about:
For those deciding to serve a mission, I encourage you to talk to a trusted adult or friend about serving a mission. Your fears and barriers.
Consider all the words President Ballard in this talk and bring your questions to the Lord.
Everyone else, this talk is also for you! Missionary work is not only for set apart missionaries.
How can you support the missionaries serving in your ward or branch?
How can you support missionaries you know in the mission field?
How can you spread the gospel in normal and natural ways? I highly encourage Elder Uchtdorf's talk from April 2019.

“I invite you to gain a solid testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.”
“..[C]ontinue to strengthen your testimony, work hard, pray, and be obedient to the Lord. Honor the covenants you have made. Continue to bless and serve others.”

Today, I talk about the very first talk in April conference. President Nelsons talk “Preaching the Gospel of Peace'' talks all about, you guessed it, PEACE! One of my favorite topics. Here’s a recap of the questions I came up with while studying:
How can you help those who are suffering around the world? You may not be able to provide materially, but how can you earnestly keep them - those in dire situations and the leaders of our world - in your prayers?
If you are of missionary age and deciding whether to go on a mission, I encourage you to talk to a trusted adult about your concerns and barriers.
If you are currently serving a mission...then you won't be listening to this. So if you are a parent of a currently serving missionary, ask you missionary about their why. Why did they decide to serve? And if that why has changed, why do they continue to serve?
And everyone else, basically, how can you share the hope and peace of Jesus Christ? This may not be an outright testimony. It might be offering a shoulder to cry on or an act of kindness with no gospel words spoken.
What does peace mean to you? How have you found peace through Jesus Christ?
As you study this conference, consider President Nelson's words at the end of this talk. Do you find peace in these talks? Where does it come from? And what personal revelation do you receive as you study?
