Anti-trans bills are happening at every level of government in the US. Packed up with terms like “parental bills of rights” and “family freedom” the gaslighting is attacking some of our most vulnerable young people. When thinking about the impact of these pieces of legislation, there was one person in particular who Dr. De Veau knew she could turn to. Dr. Ken Schneck is the program director for the Leadership in Higher Education program at Baldwin Wallace University in Cleveland, Ohio. Ken has been a leader in the student affairs space for decades and a huge proponent of the advantages of small colleges on the development of students.

According to the Institute on Disability “If people with disabilities were a formally recognized minority group, at 19% of the population, they would be the largest minority group in the United States.” What does 19% look like? Black Women in the Academy are not OK. Following Dr. Claudine Gay’s resignation from her short term as President at Harvard University, we came to find out that she had received ongoing threats to her safety including death threats. On January 8, 2024, Lincoln University’s Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Antoinette "Bonnie" Candia-Bailey, took her life after seeking assistance from her employer. Lincoln University is an HBCU, and was Dr. Candia-Bailey alma mater - a place that should have been safe, but it wasn’t. The attacks on Dr. Gay and Dr. Candia-Bailey is further evidence of what Black Women in the Academy are well aware of. The world of Academia is not a safe one for black women.
This episode features two experts on this topic, women with both research and lived experiences who can point to specific issues and calls to action as it relates to toxicity and bullying on campus and how it is impacting minoritized communities in the academy. When I recorded this thoughtful conversation with Dr. Sydney Freeman it was clear that - rightfully, Sydney had a lot on his mind - especially around doing the WORK that is associated with Equity and Justice on campus. Sydney is a full professor of Adult, Organizational Learning and Leadership at the University of Idaho. He is a former National Holmes Scholar and has earned professional certifications in the areas of faculty development, online instruction, executive management, and organizational leadership. His research investigates the future of minority serving institutions, the faculty career-cycle, and higher education as a field of study.
It is challenging to get the work done when life is rosy and the institutional and the political landscape are in support of your work - especially with little to no administrative support. But, the difficulty is compounded when the world around you seems to want to see you fail. Sydney is wildly successful at the work he is doing, primarily because he DOES THE WORK in ways that are innovative and put a lens on coalition building.

Gary Stocker is one of the preeminent experts on the uncertain marketplace in higher education, with his finger on the pulse of institutions in enrollment and financial distress. Stocker has substantial business experience in healthcare and higher education with skills in sales and marketing, management, consulting, data analytics, operations and technology.
As the chief-of-staff to a small college president in Missouri, his first few months on the job introduced him to the fragile nature of private college finances. Efforts to find potential merger partners led Stocker to ultimately develop an app that lets users compare the financial health and viability of colleges in the United States.
Stocker uses his experience in developing new business models for higher education that allow for greater efficiency and long-term growth. Stocker says: "In the 21st century, geography is not a limiting factor to business growth in higher education. Beth Devonshire, J.D. is currently the Associate General Counsel at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to her role, Beth served as a consultant for D.Stafford & Associates working with institutions on issues involving Title IX, Clery, threat assessment, and other compliance-related issues. Additionally, Beth served as the Associate Dean of Students at UMass Boston, the Director of Community Standards at Bridgewater State University, and the Director of Community Standards at Stonehill College. Prior to her work in higher education, Beth served as a law clerk for the Justices of the Superior Court in Massachusetts and in multiple roles at the Massachusetts State House.

Welcome to Season 3 of Office Hours with Dr. De Veau. We have had so many amazing shows over the last two years and we will continue in the season ahead. The Academic Year is here and US Higher Education is going through some things … between closures and mergers, wrapping our heads, hearts and strategies around what to do about holistic admissions in light of the SCOTUS ruling outlawing affirmative action … and of course our students and how are they doing and what are WE doing to build public trust in the promise that is Higher Education?

The PAB is facilitated by Sova, a Higher Education Consulting organization and consists of a group of 12 expert practitioners who are laser focused on equity and understand how complex transfer and credit mobility are. The series highlights several challenges to the Transfer process and digs deep into layers of questionable business practices that have become standard in higher education. Accreditors have been flying under the radar, keeping their role within the HigherEd landscape to the work of maintaining and ensuring a degree of quality. North Idaho College, a community college with an enrollment of nearly 10,000, is a cautionary tale for what happens when the President speaks up for what is right, faces off against a Board of Trustees who are squabbling and unqualified leading to the President being fired without cause, a law-suit, a loss of its insurance coverage, a Moody’s downgrade, mass exodus of executive leadership and is now on the precipice of losing its accreditation. In a January 2023 announcement, Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken outlined a new initiative entitled “Welcome Corps”. The Welcome Corps was designed based on existing programs building hosting programs for Ukrainian, Afghan and Venezuelan refugees. The new program will allow for host corps to sponsor refugees from a wider representation of countries. It also allows for Higher Ed institutions to be a part of the Corps. CancelStudentDebt has been a hashtag that has made its way around social media. It brings with it a great deal of division and passion. Some feel it is too much, some not enough. On August 24th, President Biden and Secretary Cardona announced a three part plan to help struggling students and their families, with $10,000 loan forgiveness to those earning under $125,000 a year and $20,000 to those who were PELL eligible while enrolled in College. Previously, the US DOE Has been pushing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PLSF) which, as of August 21 of this year has approved more than $10 billion in debt relief for over 175,000 borrowers in 10 months - a stark difference from previous years where PSLF loan forgiveness was stalled and borrowers were disappointed. “Thriving in Unfamiliar Places” with guest, Dr. Sydney Freeman, Jr., University of Idaho. Dr. Freeman is a groundbreaker. He is a professor in the Department of Leadership and Counseling at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, the first African American male to be promoted to full professor in the university's history. Being a ‘first’ on a predominantly white university campus is one thing, but having moved to Idaho after having spent a good chunk of his career at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, that is something altogether something else. During our time together, I am going to be probing Dr. Freeman’s essay “Thriving in Unfamiliar Places'' where we dig into his thesis that in order to thrive and be their completely authentic selves, it is essential to follow three keys: Knowing Who you are, Knowing Whose you are, Knowing Who you want to become. On April 28 the AAUP released a report of the Special Committee on Governance, Academic Freedom, and Institutional Racism in the University of North Carolina System.
