Redeemer Church Wichita: Recent Episodes

Jon Gordon and Morgan Burns

At Redeemer, we take seriously Jesus’ call to “Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Apprenticeship to Jesus is not a one time decision, but a lifelong journey of following Jesus as our master-teacher. Since the goal of the Christian life is maturity in Jesus, apprenticeship must be deep and holistic, transforming the spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and vocational parts of men and women. Apprenticeship to Jesus is learning to practice the way of Jesus in our homes, relationships, neighborhoods, and jobs.

We believe Christlikeness is cultivated as we implement spiritual practices, live in community with other believers, and submit to the Word and the Spirit. We agree with Dallas Willard who said, “that the gospel is opposed to earning, not effort.” As we move towards cultivating a life of loving God and people, we trust Christ will mature us into his likeness.

At Redeemer, we take seriously Jesus' call to "Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Apprenticeship to Jesus is not a one time decision, but a lifelong journey of following Jesus as our master-teacher.

We agree with Dallas Willard who said, "that the gospel is opposed to earning, not effort." As we move towards cultivating a life of loving God and people, we trust Christ will mature us into his likeness.

At Redeemer, our pathway is how we seek to embody our vision and mission, or in other words, put it into practice. We desire every person to enter into intentional apprenticeship to Jesus, to be in a diverse, loving community, and to live in Wichita as witnesses.

"The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men and women into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose." – CS Lewis

At Redeemer, our pathway is how we seek to embody our vision and mission, or in other words, put it into practice. We desire every person to enter into intentional apprenticeship to Jesus, to be in a diverse, loving community, and to live in Wichita as witnesses.

“The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men and women into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose.” – CS Lewis

This past Sunday we wrapped up our 4-week series on singleness and marriage with a message from Jon and a panel discussion. He said, “you never need less love for people, but you will always need more love of God.”

Pastor Jon gave the message yesterday on marriage as part 2 in a 4 week series on singleness and marriage. One of the lines that Jon mentioned that stuck with me most was, “marry character, not feelings.” Pastor Jon gave us a few key elements to marriage that are important to understand as well as some practical steps for anyone who is in a struggling marriage: * Companionship/friendship * Dominion (gardening) * Physical Union * Family * Re-creation

For those who feel as if your marriage is struggling, Jon gave some practical steps. Before this however, it is important to note that if you are in an abusive relationship, these steps do not apply. Abuse is not okay, and you should seek help if you are experiencing it. For those in the other scenario, here are the points: * Go to counseling together and/or alone * Get a prophetic voice in your life who loves you and can speak truth to you * Serve the other as Christ served us

Join us next week as we discuss the topic of singleness and hear from a panel to answer some questions.

This past Sunday Pastor Vic continued our series on the Sermon on the Mount by preaching on Matthew 6:5-15. He laid a framework for prayer by focussing on God as a God who speaks and desires to listen to us. Prayer is communication with God where we hear from him and speak back to him. Pastor Vic walked us through the Lord’s prayer line by line to show us why Jesus modeled this prayer and the implications for us. He emphasized six key characteristics of kingdom people. Kingdom people… * think when they pray * seek to pray well * pray for the Kingdom to come * are forgiving people * have a battle win sin * pray together

There is a quote that captures the importance of praying together well: “There may be religions that come to you through quiet walks in the woods, or by sitting quietly in the library with a book, or by rummaging around int he recesses of your psyche. Christianity is not one of them. Christianity is inherently communal, a matter of life in the Body, the church. Jesus did not call isolated individuals to follow him. He called a group of disciples.” - Hauerwas and Willimon Pastor Vic left us with a few important practices to end our time. 1. Memorize, learn, and regularly thoughtfully worshipfully pray the Lord’s prayer 2. Spend time in conversation with the trinity (you, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit) 3. Pray this prayer together sin corporate worship

This past Sunday Pastor Morgan continued our Sermon on the Mount series. This week we focussed on Matthew 6:16-18.   For context, Morgan walked us through Luke 15:28-32 and Tim Keller’s work from his book The Prodigal God. Specifically, we focussed on the attitude and spirit present in the older brother in this story. The older brother is representative of the dangers of the wrong motivations for good works, specifically to elevate the self and to transactionally receive something in return for our good works.    In the beginning of Matthew 6, as pastor Morgan alluded to last week, Jesus is teaching us about the dangers of selfish motivations for good works. As we follow Jesus, we will be tempted by the spirit of the older brother. He knows that self denial often invites the desire for recognition and attention. So, what should our relationship with good works look like?    Specifically in verses 16-18, Jesus is speaking about fasting. There was a temptation for people to physically appear tired and afflicted by their fasting as a means to receive praise for practicing fasting. Their disheveled appearance acted as a signal to the world of their spirituality. But Jesus says, “not so with you.” The purpose of our fasting is not the praise and adulation from those around us, it is to know God and elevate him. So Jesus instructs his followers to do their best to appear normal and to practice good bodily hygiene when they fast so as not to draw attention to themselves.    What is our motivation for the good works we do? Are we seeking visibility, praise, and attention from those around us? Or are we seeking God in our practices and good works?

View Details

This past Sunday Pastor Morgan continued our Sermon on the Mount series. This week we focussed on Matthew 6:1-4.    Here, Jesus is speaking to the motives behind our good words, specifically how we can sometimes treat this as a transactional relationship. Jesus is targeting the motivation that leads to good works for the purpose of being seen and praised by others. It is a motivation that is more focussed on performance than reality.    Jesus cares about our good works, but he also cares about why we do them. The reason for our good works is not to exalt ourselves in the eyes of those who witness our works, it is to glorify our Father in Heaven and increase his fame (Matthew 5:16).    Pastor Morgan clarified for us that Jesus is not saying don’t do good works. Jesus is also not saying to only do your good works in secret. Jesus is targeting the motivation for why we do good works. If you ever wonder why you’re doing something, consider how you may respond to critique or feedback on your actions. If your response is to fiercely defend yourself, this may be the proverbial indicator light that perhaps you were starting to care more about your image than that of Christ’s.    In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus seemed to focus on the dangers of sinful behavior (adultery, hatred, deceit, etc.) but in chapter 6, Jesus begins to focus on the dangers that come with religious practices. Specifically, Jesus is targeting the insincere nature of performance-based good works and hypocrisy.   We all long to be noticed or acknowledged in different ways. When we forget the love and attention of Jesus we can be tempted to seek recognition from other sources. For those that seek human praise, Jesus tells us that they will receive just that as their reward. But is that it? Jesus invites us to a deeper righteousness and reward. Jesus tells us that even those acts of righteousness that are done without praise or a spotlight are seen by our Father and they will be rewarded.    In the story of the two sons (The Prodigal Son) we find two brothers who are both seeking something from their father. The story ends with the older son’s motives exposed for why he focussed so much on his good works. We all must wrestle with our motives for our good works. Are they to exalt our image and reputation? Or are they to magnify Christ?

In other words, “if the church ain’t yo mama, then God ain’t yo daddy.” To belong to Christ is to belong to somebody. It is the question, whose story do I live out now? An individualistic approach to life with Jesus that separates you from his church is an incorrect view on apprenticeship to Jesus. As Dr. Don said, when I came to Christ, “my identity changed.” I must now start to think differently. I am myself AND I am part of a community. Dr. Don expressed this as who we are historically and who we are theologically. In Dr. Don’s words, “I am fully African American and I am fully a disciple of Jesus.” In the same way that we must see ourselves as belonging to others, we must also care deeply for one another. This attitude is captured in the quote, “if you belong to Christ, you belong to me.” This isn’t an oppressive or authoritative statement of ownership. Rather this is the loyal, loving attitude of commitment to one another. This is the belonging of the family of Christ. We must rediscover and represent as a congregation the supremacy of Jesus Christ as Lord. Dr. Don showed us from Philippians 2:5-11 3 exhortations of Paul to the church: * The perspective of Christ (vs. 5) * The pattern of Christ (vs. 6-8) * The preeminence of Christ (vs. 9-11)

The perspective of Christ is what “we” share, not on what “I” share. We are to own the mindset of Jesus together. Real health follows adopting the mind of Jesus. The pattern of Christ counterintuitive to our American pattern. The movement is downward with Christ, it is not up and to the right. This is not American, therapeutic, capitalistic, communist… it is distinctly Christ. We must go low so that one day we will be lifted high. The preeminence of Christ is that one day all will bow to Jesus. One day every tongue will confess Jesus as Lord. Christ is Lord of all and over all. What if Redeemer was an embassy in our city? We who believe are citizens of the already-not yet kingdom. We have duel citizenship. We are citizens of our country, and we are citizens of heaven. Here are our takeaways from Dr. Don: * No assembly (church) can transcend its vision of Jesus * Take the master’s yoke * Learn him (Jesus) afresh

Prayer: Daniel 6

Yesterday, Pastor Jon continued in week two of our Prayer series. By way of reminder, he emphasized that our focus on the practices of following Jesus in community is not legalistic or compulsory. As a church, we will make recommendations to you, and you get to make decisions. This is invitational, not required. At the same time, Pastor Jon wanted to be clear as to why we desire for you to implement these practices: * This is what we need in our lives. We need to connect with God * A core part of being in Redeemer is implementing these practices

If you had the opportunity to be with us, you’ll know that this sermon was a different than last week. Pastor Jon communicated at the beginning that much of the sermon would be us joining together with him in public prayer as he worked through the Lord’s prayer on behalf of one of his closest friends. While Pastor Jon prayed and taught, there were a few lines that felt particularly impactful. As we prayed through and reflected on our own current struggles with sin, we quoted Paul’s writing to the church in Rome to remember that it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Christ didn’t wait for us to be perfect or to perform a certain regiment of X, Y, and Z before he deemed us worthy of his sacrifice and redeeming love. It was while we were still sinning that Christ pursued us and still does. We are wholly pursued by a loving and relational God. Pastor Jon confessed before the church that there are times he has failed to pray for his friend. I can deeply identify with this. How often do I offer condolences and affirmation that I will be in prayer for someone, only to let it slip down the priority list and be crowded out by life’s many distractions? If you also identify with this, you are not alone in your desire to grow in this area. Pastor Jon also shared openly about times he can be confused by prayer - how it can be difficult to wrestle with unanswered prayer when Luke 11:9-13 appears to make prayer seem so simple. To this, Jon shared a resource with us that has been helpful to him - a book by author Pete Greig called God on Mute: Engaging the Silence of Unanswered Prayer. This book walks us through a number of possible reasons why prayers go unanswered. Please let Jon know if you would like more information about the book. Lastly, Pastor Jon emphasized to us just how difficult it can be to prioritize prayer in our digital moment. When our attention is literally monetized, we face a particularly challenging resistance to the margin necessary in our lives to pray and seek God. As we progress through the prayer practice in the next couple weeks, we will address this more specifically. Please plan to join us next week for week 3 of the Prayer series!

Prayer: Talking to God

As we move through the next few weeks of teaching, Pastor Jon gave us a structural tool to understand what Jesus is doing. Jesus is not dismissing the Old Testament in any way, rather he is showing us the correct and true interpretation of some key Old Testament teachings - the deeper righteousness of Godliness. Jesus does this by first saying, “you have heard it said” (Old Testament teaching). Next he says, “but I say to you” (Jesus’ interpretation). Lastly, Jesus gives us little steps or ways we can embody and apply these truths in our lives (obedience). Here is the pattern: * “You have heard it said…” + “But I say to you…” - Little steps of obedience

Jesus taught clearly on anger, but Pastor Jon helped us to see that this anger in view wasn’t simply the anger you have that flares up every now and again (though we certainly aren’t to be okay with being explosive people), but rather this is the type of corrosive anger that can fester and persevere over time. As Pastor Jon warned us, “anger is dangerous my friends.” We must be careful to understand and interpret our anger because it is such a strong emotion. Pastor Jon also shared with us that chronically angry people often times don’t think they are angry - rather thy can be caught believing they are simply right all the time. Again, when we find ourselves feeling such strong emotions, we must take time to ask ourselves why.    Perhaps one of the best ways we can work to understand and process our anger is to bring people - our trusted community - into our mess. You and me are some of the worst people at discerning & diagnosing our own heart/soul when we are in such heightened emotional states. We need our community around us to help us. This is so hard, and so vulnerable, but if we remember Jesus’ words to us to be poor in spirit, we can approach this process with humility and hope - because the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are poor in spirit.    Lastly, Pastor Jon was clear to point out that these teachings from Jesus on forgiveness are not to be abused to cover up things like abuse. To be reconciled is for things to be made right. Forgiveness does not mean there are no consequences. Anger can show up in ways like resentment, bitterness, irritation, grumbling, sarcasm, indifference, a critical spirit, competitiveness, abuse, envy, hatred, quarreling, sulkiness, etc. Where are the areas we can experience anger? The workplace? Family relationships or marriage? The Church? Our politics?    We must remember, this type of anger has no place in the kingdom of God. May we be peace makers together.

The Gospel of the Kingdom

The fifth and final mark of the early church was their counter-cultural sexual ethic. Before we dove too deep into the topic, Pastor Morgan took the time to acknowledge two things: 1) We must work to not make the conversations surrounding sex and our bodies only an intellectual one. We all have very tangible stories and experiences when it comes to this topic and it's easy to distance ourselves by keeping it intellectual. 2) Because of this, we recognize that teaching and dialogue around the topic of sexuality can be triggering for some. Church leaders in the past have not always handled this topic well. If you are someone who would like to have a conversation about sexual ethics, we would love to be available to you and connect you with one of our men or women in leadership. Please reach out to us and let us know if this is your next step! Our contact information is listed at the bottom of this email.  After establishing this baseline, Pastor Morgan took us to our scripture for the morning's teaching: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. We looked at certain Corinthian catchphrases of the time when Paul wrote this letter, and the response to each phrase the church is to hold. For example, it was common for Corinthian citizens to say, "I have the right to do anything." To which Paul would say for citizens of heaven, "but not everything is beneficial," or "but I will not be mastered by anything."  Another issue was how the Corinthians had separated the body from the soul. Because these two are separated, it was easy to emphasize the soul as what matters most - meaning you can simply do what you want with your bodies. However, as members of the church, scripture (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) makes it clear that our bodies were bought at a price, therefore we are to honor God with our bodies. Paul is taking is right back to the gospel message of redemption. Christ redeemed our bodies through his life, death, and resurrection. Therefore, how we use and treat our bodies is to reflect the significance of this message. You do not have a body, you are a body! Our bodies will be resurrected with Christ and they belong to the Lord.  Lastly, Pastor Morgan gave us some next steps to process:  * Integrate our bodies into discipleship & formation * Shame is a force we must regularly contend with * Begin the work of naming sexually deformative messages * Step in to honest community

There is so much more to be communicated and processed regarding sexual ethics, and as we said above, if you need to process this more, we would love to be available to you.

Jon spoke today on the sanctity of life as we continue looking at the 5 Marks of the Early Church.  Our text was 1 Cor 13:  1-3 which is considered the "Love chapter" of the bible.  Nothing matters if you don't love. Sanctity of Life is a tough topic that many churches do not address.  Jon was open and honest about his fears of traumatizing, hurting or alienating people today.  Redeemer began discussing this when Roe was overturned.  Morgan and Jon invited the women of Redeemer to discuss so they could just listen.   Jon started with an important history lesson.  If we go back and look at the Roman Empire, it was common for babies to be discarded.  Infant exposure was not only common but accepted.  (Just leaving a baby somewhere because you didn't want it.)This was an easy way for the Romans to gather new slaves by collecting these discarded babies.   If we look at Luke 10: 25-37, Jesus expands on the question "Who is your neighbor?"  When we see someone in pain or someone in need, we are to act.  Christians in the early church did this.  They adopted many of these abandoned babies.  Christians outlawed "infant exposure."  This increased the number of Christians and created equal numbers of males and females since girls were discarded much more often than boys.  In early Christianity, women began to see that they were valued.  It has always been in the history of Christianity to fight for women and babies.      There is no specific scripture in the bible discussing abortion.  The Christian Church believes the fetus has value.  Where did this come from?  Another history lesson....there were laws that if you hit a pregnant woman and harm was done to the baby, there was a fine.  If the baby did not survive, it was a "life for a life."  Exodus 21: 22-25 It's important to note that the life of the mother has always been in included in the church's stance.  The life of the mother was always protected.  Jews and Christians alike do not accept abortion except to save or protect the life of the mother.   Psalms 139: 13-14. Let's talk about today.  In our world today, abortion is politicized.  As a church, we cannot be a shaming place.  We can't push truth over love.  We can't protect babies and not love the mother.  We can't protect babies and not take care of the poor.  We cannot allow this to be used as a political tool.   There is a lot of trauma and hurt surrounding this topic.  We need to be a place of healing, love and support. Romans 12 was a good place to close.  I encourage everyone to read that chapter this week as you digest this heavy topic.   As a church, we will follow Jesus and Jesus commanded us to love.

Morgan continued today with the 3rd mark of the early church, non-violence. Edwin Stanton was an enemy of Abe Lincoln. He took every opportunity to embarrass and humiliate Mr. Lincoln. When President Lincoln was elected, he selected Edwin Stanton as his Sec of War. Many advisors thought this was foolish and tried to convince Pres. Lincoln to select someone else. President Lincoln's response was "He is the best man for the job." Pres Lincoln could have retaliated. He had the power to destroy Edwin Stanton, but instead he placed him in a position of power. He rose above hate. When Pres Lincoln was killed, Edwin stated "He was one of hte greatest that ever lived." He chose redemptive love. In today's world, hitting back is expected and celebrated We take turns takign shots at each other. We are socialized by retaliation and revenge. We are socialized that violence is the best solution. Jesus is calling us to be counter-cultural. We reviewed all the scriptures basically stating an "eye for an eye." Lev 24:17-22, Exodus 12: 23-24, Deut. 19: 21. These were created for the courts of law for Justice. They were also created to prevent revenge by the victim because our natural response has always been retaliation. Jesus said these laws are for the courts but not my disciples. "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind." Ghandi Matthew 5: 38-48....Jesus tells us to take a different path. Vs 39 talks about turning the other cheek. Backhanded slaps were to humiliate and shame, yet we are to turn and allow the other side to be hit. Vs 40 we are told if someone takes your shirt to give your coat as well. This also shows us to not be wrapped up in possessions. Vs 41 states if we are told to go a mile, then go 2. Ethnic Jews oppressed by the Roman empire often had to carry a pack for a mile. Jesus said to carry it for 2 miles. All 3 of these are humiliating and offensive. How are we to respond? Romans 14:21. We are to bless those who persecute us and live in harmony with one another. We are not to repay evil with evil. "I will repay" says the Lord. 3 things we can do: #1: Lay down your rights. America is all about "our rights." Our primary allegience is not to the USA, it's to Jesus. We are to be a peple willign to turn the other cheek for Jesus. Gal 5: 13-15 #2: Respond in a surprisingly creative and generous way. This takes spiritual maturity. Do not just fight or flight. Respond courageously with love. Morgan used Rosa Parks as an example. She didn't stand down. She had dignity and made a decision to respond with creative resistance. When we retaliate, we demenish our humanity in the process. Vs 43 commands us to love our enemy. It is seen as patriotic to hate your enemy. If you only love those like you, you are no better than anyone else. Christians are to be known by their love. We are to pray for those who have wronged us. Vs 45: God doesn't just care for you. He died for all of us....the abused, the abuser, the lunched, the lynch mob, the oppressed, the oppressor, etc. We have all hurt people. God's love is for everyone. Practical take-aways to cultivate a life of non-violence: * Spend time in prayer and silence. Who has wronged you? Pray for them. * Be mindful of your narrative intake and how it is impacting your thoughts and actions. * Know yourself.

Non-violence is not about effectiveness, it's about faithfulness. We can't advance God's kingdom through the sword. https://redeemerwichita.church/

Last week Jon spoke on loving the poor and this week Morgan spoke on multi ethnic churches. He kicked us off with a joke centered around how divisive the church is today. There are so many divisions among Christians, denominations, etc. We live in a divisive world and the church shares it's own version of division. We have to be carful because as the world secularizes, it will lean towards politics. Politics is no longer a way to lead and solve problems. Politics is now a way to divide and it's thick within the church. We cannot be discipled by political talking points instead of being discipled by Jesus. Christians in the early church were heavily persecuted. Why would anyone want to be a part of the most persecuted group? These 5 characteristics are what stood out among the early Christians: * Showed love and hope to the poor * Importance of multi-ethnic groups and diversity * Committed to the sanctity of life * View of sex was counter-cultural to the mainstream * Committed to non-violence.

If you look at these 5 things and consider politics, the first two are in line with democrats, the next two are in line with Republicans, and neither really align with the 5th. Redeemer needs to follow Jesus and not a political party. The gospel offends both parties. Morgan stated that the next few weeks we will tackle tough topics and we each need to pay attention to the tension these topics main bring. Press in and dig deeper. Let God meet you. Our scripture was Acts 15: 1-35. The scripture shows conflict. Acts 15 is a watershed moment in the Bible. This is the first major dispute over how fast multi-ethnic churches were growing outside Jerusalem. This moment challenged what it meant to be Jewish vs what it meant to follow Jesus. They were planting Multi-Ethnic churches! We read I Cor 9: 19-23 together. Paul explained how he has become all things so that he might save some. Paul had cultural discernment. He went from one side of town to the other for the sake of the gospel. "I have become...." Paul mastered this. We find that the only place Jews and Gentiles sat at the same table was the table of Jesus. Morgan provided information from studies looking at multi-ethnic churches. If you are a member of a homo-ethnic church, this can promote racism. When we are only around those who look like us, act like us, think like us, that becomes your norm. Then you start to project that onto others. A diverse community makes us aware of our blind spots. Morgan gave the example of Dietrich Bonhoeffer who experienced the "Jim Crow South" with his black pastor from Harlem. If he would have not experienced this, he would not have been the anti-Nazi force later in his life. Please remember that proximity breeds empathy and distance breeds suspicion. Spend time with those different than you. Be a good listener and try and see things from other points of view. Jesus is the ultimate "I have become...." Looking more at the text from Acts, Peter tells them "You know God wanted us preaching the gospel to the Gentiles." Some were surprised that "Even the Gentiles were filled with the Holy Spirit." Peter comes back to Jerusalem with criticism from the Jews. Morgan reminded us that who we eat with communicates our theology more than we know. Peter was experiencing this. This all led to the letter basically telling the Gentiles they did not have to assimilate. We should not be putting road blocks up for anyone seeking Christ. How do we engage culture with the gospel? How do we steer away from colonialism which tries to force assimilation? What message are we sending as a church? Are we crating a space for differences? Are we creating a pathway for ALL to become leaders in our church? Morgan encouraged us to do the following... Listen and learn. Stop talking and really listen to those with different life experiences than you have. The church has done a poor job in the past of not lamenting our lack of diversity or our encouragement of separation. What does this look like for us as a church? Create a habit of self examination. We all have work to do. https://redeemerwichita.church/

Some may wonder why the focus on Sabbath the past few weeks. Jon and Morgan firmly believe that spiritual formation is key to Redeemer. Bible reading, prayer, sabbath and other spiritual practices are rapidly declining. They want to introduce us to spiritual practices to grow our faith. We all need mentorship in these areas.

Quick overview of the four areas surrounding Sabbath we have discussed: Stop, Rest, Delight and Worship.
Here are the scriptures we have used along the way. Gen 2: 1-3, Exodus 31:15, Col 2: 16, Mark 2:27, Exocus 16: 23-25, and Romans 12:1.

Jon started off this past Sunday discussing how American culture has a hard time with suffering and grieving. We can't sit in our sadness. Our strongest desires are not our deepest desires many times in the US.

Our body signals us when it needs something. Our soul may be signaling us that we need to slow down and just be with God. Are you listening to that urging?
The hope is that you can quiet your life down so that you can hear God and pay attention. May you commit to the practice of Sabbath. May you listen to your soul.

The church has gotten too much into entertainment and allowing Christians to be passive observers. We are called to action. We need to do the work and engage God.
We closed hearing from some women of Redeemer and how they honor Sabbath and some of the struggles they have encountered.

Morgan preached this week as we continued diving into the commandment of Sabbath. Morgan made clear their agenda is to push us to be more like Jesus and Sabbath is a key piece of this.

Morgan started with a story of a family that won the lottery. They imaged all their dreams coming true and no more pain and suffering due to this massive amount of money they won. In reality, this windfall of money led to fighting, greed, confusion and ultimately divorce. The statistics show that the majority of lottery winners that take the full sum, have spent all the money within 5 years. Why? People do not know how to steward that great of a gift.

Similarly to this, we have been given a great gift in the Sabbath, but we may not know how to steward that gift. Is the world telling us that rest and not pushing harder at work is wrong and lazy? Does life just get in the way and we really don't think we can take 24 hours? Do we fight, argue, disagree, make Sabbath legalistic and turn this gift into a burden?

The conference they returned from last week was all on well-being. We are not well. Our families, churches, communities and friends are not well. We are more distracted, tired, anxious than any other generation. Just take a look at the political environment. We can't even be kind to someone who disagrees with us.

Mark 2: 23-28. Once again, Jesus is having conflict with the Pharisees. They have asked "Who is this man that forgives sinners?" "Why does he eat with people like tax collectors?" "Why do his disciples not follow the law as they should?" "Why are they doing unlawful things on the Sabbath?"

There were so many rules/laws, that the Pharisees begin to miss the mark. Jesus is the embodiment of the law. Jesus is God, the Messiah, the King. The Sabbath was made for man, not the man for the Sabbath.

Digging into Sabbath a little deeper....free people are not enslaved to their work. Sabbath is a day to be happy, to delight in God and His creation. Sabbath is a day to not only not do work, but not think about work. Is it hard to delight in God? Is your view of God Joyful and delightful? We have a hard time celebrating one another and finding delight in one another. It's no wonder we struggle with finding delight in time with Jesus.

While thinking and praying about Sabbath, ask yourself these questions....

What brings you Joy? What gives you life?
The final point was that not only do we need to rest from the external, but we also need to rest from trying to prove ourselves. We need to rest from trying to be accepted and trying to be "good enough." We need to rest in the gospel of Jesus Christ as he is the source of true rest.
We closed by hearing from Keas and Sarah Keasler about what Sabbath looks like to them and how it has evolved through different stages of their lives. I encourage you to listen to the full podcast from the service so you can hear everything they shared. Here are a few takeaways that I noted:
If you are a type A, driver personality, you may have a "to do" list 6 days a week. On Sabbath, you need a "not to do" list.
Preparation is key. Shop, cook, plan in advance. Light a candle and share a prayer to start and end Sabbath. (The prayer they use is listed below)
Sabbathing is like REM sleep is to a healthy sleep life. You can nap every day for an hour and never get to REM sleep.
Think about doing something you can't do the rest of the week. What brings you back in focus with God?
Nothingness can be very hard for some people.
The 2 spiritual practices that cause you to really TRUST God are Tithing and Sabbath.

Keas stated many have always thought there were 9 commandments and then 1 strong suggestion. (To Sabbath) :)

Jon continued our teaching around Sabbath this past week. He kicked off with the story of the first company that went public with a Hydrogen powered truck that quickly became worth more that Ford Motors at the time. Recently the CEO of this company was convicted of fraud. Everything about this was a fraud. And....everyone involved at the company knew it was a fraud.
The belief that we can go and go and go and not rest, is a fraud.
We are not in a good place right now. 70% of all deaths in the US are preventable. We have had record increases in suicide over the past few years. Americans work more and vacation less than anyone else. We have idolatry with work.
We are emotionally exhausted and spiritually malnourished.

The bible commands rest. Rest is beautiful and gospel centered. Rest can be a spiritual practice.
Scriptures to reference: Genesis 2: 1-3, Exodus 31:17.
Jon pointed out that God created us on the 6th day, on the 7th day, everyone rested. The very first thing we do, is rest.
Mark 2: 27-28, Matthew 11:28-30
Have we lost the ability to rest in God? Have we lost the ability to be still and soak in God's presence?
Once you honor the Sabbath, God will honor you and bring about change in your life. Others have attested to being healthier, improved prayer life, more quality family time, etc.
Deuteronomy 5: 12-15. The day of rest is not just for you. The rest is for your land and your animals, etc. Everyone needs rest. Maybe this includes your employees.

Step back and consider if you are a slave to your life, your business, your technology, etc.
We have an overabundance of everything in America. Our smart phones are the hypodermic needles of this generation.
Are you a slave to your phone? Can you be still, turn off all the external noise, and turn off the internal noise that is constantly going on in your brain?
Practical takeaways:
Put your phone away for extended periods of time.
Turn off your notifications.
Plan a family meal together with no electronics?
Sit in nature and just be still?
Pray that God shows you ways to Sabbath.
PLAN to sabbath. Do you need to do a few more things the day before Sabbath in preparation? Do you need to plan that family meal and make arrangements?

Jon preached from Matthew 3 on repentance. He told the story of the lionfish that is beautiful, quiet, seems harmless, but is actually extremely poisonous, spreads quickly and has no true predator. The lionfish is taking over the Atlantic ocean even though there have been many efforts to contain them. Finally, Florida told their people that they have to kill them to control their growth.

We bring sin in just like this. It can feel good, seem harmless and look good but before you know it turn into an addiction.
There is no predator for sin. It will continue to grow and unlike the lionfish, humans cannot destroy sin.

Only when judgement comes will sin be destroyed.
Jon discussed how we cannot hide in the church from sin. The church is not a safe place from sin. It should however be a place where everyone can come and everyone can flourish.

In verses 1-6, John the Baptist comes from the wilderness with the wardrobe and diet of a prophet telling the people to REPENT!
Judgement and repentance are hard topics. However, if we are going to be a church and community that follows Christ, we are going to follow the bible.

In verses 7-12 the Pharisees are called a "brood of vipers." In today's world, we see the people with the signs stating "God Hates XXXX" while screaming about God's judgement. This is not what the text states. He is calling us out. We need to stop worrying about others and look at ourselves. The Pharisees were always condemning others and John was telling them to look within. Don't think because you attend the right church and know the right things to say that you are in. Many will be turned away. We do need to know that God is good and will make things right and be just. Judgement will come but only Jesus can be that judge.

Verses 13-17 assure us that there is good news. "This is my beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased." More to come on this next week.

Jon challenged us to ask God where He is calling us each to repent. Where are you hiding in your religion? Jon also recommended the book The Skeletons in God's Closet by Joshua Ryan Butler if you want to dig deeper on judgement and repentance.

Morgan preached from Matthew 2 today. Morgan started with the story of John Graham Burge, an American police detective for the Chicago police department who was found guilty of having "directly participated in or implicitly approved the torture" of at least 118 people in police custody in order to force false confessions. He was later convicted, but this is a very real event from our time where a man took advantage of his authority. Our history has many examples of where this has happened. Abuse of power is a very real thing. Power can become the weapon of the insecure. With great power comes great responsibility. In today's world, many don't handle power well. We are always looking for control. Power infused with insecurity creates a real threat. From Matthew 2, we see all of this with King Herod.

Morgan titled his talk today "A Tale of Two Kings"; Herod, who inherited his power, and Jesus, the only King.
We looked at Herod, Jesus and the Magi from the East. I know in the past, I have read this as "The Christmas Story" and never really dug into it like we did today.

Let's start with King Herod. When the Magi came looking for the new king, Herod was deeply disturbed. He was a paranoid, unstable man who had 3 of his sons killed and his wife killed. He was terrified of this new baby that was born who some were saying was a king. When your power is threatened, you can do unthinkable things.

Does a little of King Herod live in all of us? Do we sometimes hate, feel jealous and try to take control of our lives and call all the shots? Do we have 2 kings at war within us? When we act like King Herod, are we jockeying for power in our own lives? What is it in your own life, that you can't let go of? Jesus can rescue us from our own insecurity.

Dale Bruner said it best. "Herod is not dead; Herod lives on in us, the people of God. The exaggerated ambitions, pretensions, self-centeredness, greed for position, grudge against God, guile (craftiness), and finally human cruelty and insensitivity-the fruit of our war with God-must be contented with even by Christians until the Last Judgement. There are two kings at war in the world and in all of us- Herod and Christ. We know who will win, but meanwhile the battle rages . Herod is here in the scripture partly as a warning to the Christian reader of who he or she, in no little measure, still is."

Herod knows he has been tricked. He is fearful so he puts fear into everyone by ordering all boys under age 2 in the area killed. Can you hear the mama's cries? This is systemic injustice at it's finest. Do you think the people wondered where God was and how this could happen? We live in a fallen world just like they did back in this time. Pain and suffering are all around us and yet God is still working. It's so hard to live life in the present and be attentive to what God is doing even in the midst of pain and suffering.

We do know of 1 little boy who survived the massacre and he saved the world. All this takes place to fulfill the scriptures.

Then we looked at the Magi from the East. They came with excitement looking for the new King. They were from Babylon which is Iraq today. This is the first encounter Jesus has with ethnic outsiders. Magi's where despised. They were pagan astrologers with great wealth. This is a perfect example of God's grace and kindness drawing ethnic outsiders to him. They are on a long journey that is not convenient, and not safe. And still, the Magi were full of joy searching for the truth. When they found him, they bowed down and worshipped him. Matthew 28:17. This is our purpose. WE are to be worshippers of Jesus. We are to lay our best at his feet. Matthew 2:12 talks about how the Magi were warned to go home a different way and not back to Herod. They also went "another way" because they were transformed. This is discipleship. Another interesting point from today.....after this point in Matthew, Herod is only referred to as Herod and not King Herod.

We wrapped up by looking at Jesus our refugee King. When you think about it, the first Christmas is terrifying. There was a teen pregnancy that could have been punishable by death, Joseph had to flee to Egypt with his family, they had to protect Jesus from being killed by Herod's order, and they became refugees in a foreign land. JESUS IS the immigrant story! How we treat immigrants matters to God.
In verses 19-20 we look at after Herod died. Joseph, Mary and Jesus were headed back to Israel when they detoured to Galilee and ended up in Nazareth. Nazareth isn't even mentioned in the old testament. It was an insignificant, small town. This is also a part of the story of Jesus. As Morgan said, "Jesus came from the hood." Jesus was a refugee, on the run who ended up in a Podunk town. This also fulfilled the scriptures. The humble way Jesus came to be matters. We should us this to shape our discipleship and behavior.

Matthew is also telling us that we cannot have a neutral response to Jesus. Jesus cannot sit in the passenger seat of our lives. Who will you model your life after? What do you need to let go of and let God take over.

Jon took us into Matthew 1: 1-24 today. If you have ever been to therapy, it may start with a discussion of your family and how that has impacted you. Our origin has influence. Our origin shapes and forms us. Through the origin of Jesus, we see who Jesus is and in turn we can see who we are. This is why Matthew tells the story of the origin and genealogy of Jesus.

Just a reminder that Matthew was writing to a Jewish audience and the book of Matthew was written 20 years after the death of Jesus. Over and over in the genealogy it lists fathers, until you get to Joseph where it states “Joseph, the HUSBAND of Mary.” In biblical times, having a baby out of wedlock was extremely tragic. The penalty for a pregnancy during a betrothal period was death. Due to this, Joseph was trying to be honorable and “divorce her quietly.”

In order for the prophecies to come true, Jesus had to be of the lineage of David. God spoke to Joseph through an angel, that he was to adopt Jesus. Jesus is literally adopted into the lineage of David. I love how Jon shared that this shows the heart of God for adoption. Through this, the prophecy was fulfilled.

Vs 21 states “He will save HIS people.” The people of Israel have failed over and over again. Jesus has come to save them. We ALL need Jesus (God save) to save us. Is Jesus someone you need to follow?

Jon closed with talking about how God is always with us. So many times, we miss God because we are too busy to believe and feel and listen. This should point us to a better, more committed prayer life.

The book of Matthew opens and closes with the presence of God being with you. Jon left us with 2 questions to ponder this week:

#1: Where do you need to be rescued? What is taking your time, energy and focus away from time with Jesus?

#2: What does being with Jesus look like? Make a concrete effort this week to spend time with Jesus. Block off time. Be specific and stick to it. https://redeemerwichita.church/

Morgan started us off looking at Matthew 1:1-17 and compared it to the famous violinist who sold out a concert at Carnegie Hall and the next day stopped and took time to play in the NYC subway. Very few stopped to enjoy his amazing music. They had no idea who was in their midst. Matthew 1 is similar to this in that Matthew is laying literary art before us. To a Jewish leader, this is dripping with history, stories and beauty. This is rich theology and not just biblical genealogy. Many of us skim over these verses and pay little attention to the lists of names and timelines. We need to realize Matthew is telling of the birth of the Savior and Messiah. He is telling the story of the "greater Joshua" who will lead his people.

We also looked at David and Abraham and their relationship to Jesus and how scripture was fulfilled.
2 Samuel 7:12-16
Genesis 12: 1-3
Both promises to David and Abraham are fulfilled through Jesus.
Matthew is writing to a Jewish audience and yet his verses are filled with moral, ethnic and gender outsiders.

Matthew includes women in the family tree and 4/5 were Gentiles. He also included a prostitute, an adulterer, a murderer and a man who sold his own brother into slavery.

Jesus promises us a multi ethnic family. He commands us to make disciples of all ethnicities.

Christ is not ashamed of sinners. He identified with them, loved them and served them. In Christ, prostitutes and kings sit down as equals. The gospel is deep and wide with sufficient grace for all of us.

Jesus can also use you no matter what our situation looks like. God is calling you to be in relationship with Him. Jesus called and used Matthew (formerly known as Levi) who was a Jewish tax collector who collected from Jewish people for the Roman government. In Morgan's words, "He was today's Uncle Tom." And yet, Jesus sought him and used him.

Sometimes in our culture we take a snapshot of someone at their worst and then identify them for the rest of their lives using that snapshot. Thank goodness, through grace, Jesus takes us as we are. God is working in the ups and downs of your life and can use you right where you are. You may not know your family lineage. If you are in Christ, THIS is your story.

Are we extending God's grace to others and living under the truth of the gospel? Are we being inclusive and inviting outsiders to our table? God has a way of using unlikely folks. I challenge you to listen and see how He can use you right where you are today.

The scripture today was John 17:9-23 and the topic was "Cultural Engagement."

Jon started the discussion by showing in scripture where the message of the gospel goes across cultures. We are going to see things differently and that's OK. Can we allow space for our differences? Can we be a community and love and serve each other?

Historically, the church has engaged in culture in 3 different ways:
1. Christ against culture: be out of the world, culture is too bad so we remove ourselves. An example might be an Amish community. John 17: 9 states how he is praying for the church and how we are to be IN the world. We have to navigate being IN the world but not OF the world by still being Christ-centered. Vs 11: We are called to be present. Jesus engaged culture. We are His messengers/ambassadors.
2. Christ relating to culture. (Relevance). No obstacles, accepting all so we don't offend. John 17: 14-17: We must be willing to be hated. We must be willing to love, care for and serve those around us. We cannot ignore truth.
3: Christ transforming culture: As a church we sometimes feel we can change the world's culture. Or, we feel our culture is the correct culture and we must get everyone to agree.
WE MUST DO ALL THREE. We are to be IN the world, stand for historical truth, and be transforming through loving God and loving our neighbor.
Jon discussed code-switching and how minorities may be much more used to doing this. Broadly, code-switching is the practice of adjusting one's style of speech, appearance, behavior and expression in the ways that will optimize the comfort of others. The bible calls us to do this. We are to step into someone else's world. We need to make people of all cultures feel welcomed and respected.

This is an excerpt from The Lausanne Covenant on culture and what Redeemer believes:
"The development of strategies for world evangelization calls for imaginative, pioneering methods. Under God, the result will be the rise of churches deeply rooted in Christ and closely related to their culture. Culture must always be tested and judged by scripture. Because man is God's creature, some of his culture is rich in beauty and goodness. Because he has fallen, all of it is tainted with sin and some of it is demonic. The Gospel does not presuppose the superiority of any culture to another, but evaluates all cultures according to it's own criteria of truth and righteousness, and insists on moral absolutes in every culture. Missions have all too frequently exported with the gospel of alien culture and churches have sometimes been in bondage to culture rather than to scripture. Christ's evangelists must humbly seek to empty themselves of all but their personal authenticity in order to become the servants of others, and church must seek to transform and enrich culture, all for the glory of God." (Interesting that this was written in the 1970's)

Jon continued in Psalms this past Sunday by walking us through chapter 107. He kicked off the conversation asking "How much is enough?" "How much money would satisfy you?" Sometimes we want all the benefits of money but not the problems that may come with it. Many lottery winners destroy their lives. Sometimes there is no control for greed. We think we need more money, more blessings, more, more, more.... The world tells us we constantly need more. We have more freedom and opportunity than any other country in the world and we continue to want more.
This led us to gratefulness and how to be thankful.

Psalms 107 is broken into the following: deadly threat, cry for help, God's deliverance, call to thank and praise God, and finally wisdom.
Verses 4-9 discuss a "city to dwell in." They needed a safe place, they needed a Father.

Verses 10-16 contains a cry from being imprisoned and having no control over injustice. God can break the bonds of injustice which leads them to thankfulness.

Verses 17-22 paints the picture of addiction and how he delivered them from their distress.

In today's world, conservatives may cry "God is King!" and then liberals may cry "God is Love!" and what we need to know is He is BOTH! God gives justice AND protects and loves us.

Verses 23-32 discuss our omnipotent creator for when you face those times where life is so hard....this is a desperate plea.

And finally, verses 33-43 show wisdom in knowing who God is.
Psalms 107: 43 "Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord."

We live in a time of full information to anything we want to know about. This is not wisdom. Putting knowledge into practice and having it change your character is wisdom.

All of this leads to gratefulness. Gratefulness must be recognized in order to make an impact and it can be transforming. We were challenged to journal as often as you can ways God has been good to you. We are the recipients of goodness. So much of our life does not reflect on this goodness. We live in a violent sinful world and need gratitude.

Research shows that pausing to be grateful once a week can impact your life. Try this practice....when you come to a close of something like a vacation or a long weekend, start to be thankful. Be present and don't start thinking about what is ahead. Be in the moment and give thanks. Depth and detail is more important than the breath of gratitude.

Jon continued in Psalms 73 today. The author of Psalms 73 is Asaph who was a director of music in the temple worship during the period of Kind David.

We all have natural desires, but sometimes they get distorted Pride come in and we may start wanting more and more.

Asaph spoke of being envious as he saw the "prosperity of the wicked." He saw bodies "fat and sleek" and that they had "no trouble and were not stricken." He felt the wicked had no issues or problems. In today's world, families who have great wealth may appear to have everything easy and many may envy them. This is not always as it appears. Social media tends to amplify this. Everyone posts all the positives of their lives. This can create envy, jealousy and distortion.

"People's words doubting God have become God's words to doubting people." Tim Mackie

Starting in vs 13, Asaph starts to cry out about how good he has been and by vs 17, he is back in community with God and has discerned other and can see they may not be without issues and problems.
We were created to desire, to love, etc. We have to be careful these don't get out of order.

Psalms 73: 25.....he reordered his desire back to being on God.
I think we can all relate to this. How many times have Christians proclaimed God is good, but then realize how hard this is to live out.
Jon closed with a few questions to lean into. Are you content with how God made you? Did He make a mistake? Are you content trusting that God has you where He wants you? It's comforting to me to know God made me exactly as I am for his purpose.

You can be envious....what you really want is God and He is available to you.

Jon shared a lot on Sunday around Emotional Health and how Redeemer views emotion.

"We are committed to looking beneath the surface of each of our lives in order to be holistically transformed by the power of Jesus. Pursuing emotional health is a lifelong journey that includes dealing with your past, family of origin, narrative scripts, emotions etc. in order to love God and our neighbor as ourselves."

We started by doing some self examination. What type of emotional person are you? Are you highly emotional? Do you always act like everything is ok but buried deep is a ton of emotion? Are you anti-emotion? Are you the excitable/fun emotional person?
Jon recommended you ask those closest to you about behaviors based on what type you are. Get feedback/insight from those who know you best.

We examined what emotion are, what they are for, and what we do with them. We started off in Genesis where God displayed His emotion. He delighted in what He created. Emotion is good. We are made that way. Genesis 1:4, 2:2, 2:9, 2:18, 2:25. When we get to chapter 3 of Genesis, Satan tells a lie and uses Eve's delight in wanting the forbidden fruit to bring about shame, guilt and awareness of nakedness. Genesis 3:3-7, 8-10.

Emotion causes us to act or move. Genesis 4:7 is sometimes mistranslated. Some understand it to mean we need logic to rule over our emotions, but we believe we need both. We need logic and emotion. Our emotions are distorted because of our fall from Christ. We are sinners and we need logic to work together and guide our emotions.

Christians tend to be more disturbed by emotions than non-Christians. Many see it as a spiritual failure and attach guilt and shame. It is OK to express emotion. We are created to take in the world, let it affect us and take it to God. We serve a loving God who is relational. We are a church that wants you to pour out your emotion no matter what it is. In Ephesians 4 it says "Be angry." We learn emotion from those around us and by witnessing how they handle it. It's important to look at your past and evaluate how your family handled emotion. Emotions help us perceive the world and act, emotions communicate value, emotions help us connect, and emotions motivate us. John 11:32-37, Romans 12:15, Psalms 62:8. Emotions also turn us towards God.

What do we do with emotions?
Identify them: Ask others around you. How do my emotions show up?
Examine them: Why am I feeling this way. Why do I react this way?
Evaluate them: Does this align with Jesus? This is a great spot to invite others in to speak to this.
Act: What changes do I need to consider based on self evaluation and feedback?

Morgan continued our Vision and Values series in I Corinthians 15: 1-11.
Corinth was the center for everything back in the day. The very air was about social status, autonomy and all about the pursuit of pleasure.  Morgan compared this to our world today.  Are we being shaped by culture or by Christ?  We are to be present in the world, but also be a distinct people.  Greatness is not dominating people but serving people.  Our identity needs to be in Jesus, not our jobs, our kids, our looks, etc.
How do we exist in Christ and in Wichita?

The gospel is for those IN the church as well as those outside the church.  We need to always be swimming in the gospel. In good times and bad, we need to intentionally rehearse the gospel.

Morgan kept stating how we need to gospel the gospel to ourselves.  And don't just hear the gospel, share it with others.

We then took a look at the gospel and what Jesus has done for the salvation of the world.  I Cor 15:  3-7.

In Acts it talks about how the resurrection was not done in a corner.  Jesus appeared to Cephas, Peter, the 12 and then more than 500.  Isn't it reassuring that he went after Peter, the one who let him down.  THIS is the gospel.

This week we got to listen and learn from Sarah Keasler as she shared her story for Asian American and Pacific Islander month. She shared about 3 influential people over history and her life that played significant roles in her faith journey. She is such a gifted speaker and we are excited to have her and her family be a part of our community. We continued in our vision and values series looking at the Kingdom of God. Here is what we learned: * As disciples of Jesus we must know what Jesus taught. * The main theme of Jesus teaching and preaching ministry is the Kingdom of God (Mt. 4:17, 23, 9:35; Mk. 1:14-15; Luke 4:42-44, 8:1, 9:1-2, 9:10-11, 10:8-9; Acts 1:3). * Jesus was the original proclaimer of the good news of the gospel and chose to use the language of the kingdom (Mark 1:14-15). * The Kingdom of God primarily means the rule and reign of God. This is something God does. We do not build the kingdom. * Jesus intentionally chose this language of the Kingdom of God because it was biblical. Language of kingship and rule/reign is all over the OT ( 1 Ch. 29:11; Ps. 22:28, 96:10, 103:19; Daniel 2:44, 6:26-27; 2 Samuel 7:12-16). * Jesus came fulfilling the promises and hope of the OT. * The Kingdom of God (the rule and reign of God) has broken into history through Jesus' birth, incarnation, life, teachings, miracles, death, resurrection, ascension, and his sending of the Spirit to his people. * Jesus taught that the Kingdom is NOW and NOT YET. It is present and it is future. * The Kingdom is now (Mk. 1:15; Mt 12:28; Luke 17:20-21) * The Kingdom is future (Mt. 8:11, 25:31-34; Lk 22:17-18) * The gospel of the Kingdom has two comings, and both are characterized by Jesus. See the graphic below. * As the church we live in the tension of the now and the not yet of the Kingdom. * There are present blessings we have received, but also future blessings we look forward to. * This is the good news of the Kingdom that Jesus taught and embodies. * When God rules and reigns his will is done, people flourish, and life is the way it was intended to be. * This is why Jesus taught us to pray for God's rule more on earth as it is in heaven in Matthew 6:10 and to seek his rule and reign in our lives in Matthew 6:33.

Jon continued the series on vision and values by looking at Matthew 28: 18-20, Col 1:28-29 and Ephesians 4: 11-16.

He started with the movie Good Will Hunting and how two blue collar kids from the same neighborhood lived life together even though one was a genius. Ben Affleck's character told Matt Damon's character he dreamt about coming to pick Matt up one morning and that he would not be there because he finally left to fulfill his life purpose.

We have so many influences in our life telling us how to live including our family, friends and community. We are taught to go to school, go to college, work hard, get a good job, and have a good life.

We struggle to be something different, but Jesus calls us to be different. We must give up ourselves because what Jesus has is so much better!
Jon also painted the picture of Michael Scott on The Office. He simply wants to be loved and accepted but he has no maturity to live that out. His character is a fool that can't manage anyone due to his immaturity.

Jon tied it all together like this....Christianity today is not taking the leap that Matt Damon did in Good Will Hunting. Instead, we may act like Michael Scott and be self righteous, immature and follow fools. The church the last few years has had some rotten fruit. In today's society it's even hard to be a luke-warm Christian. Are you holding on to the culture your family provided of what a good life is? No other world view has anything close to what Jesus offers. How do we grow with that in mind?

#1: Renewing your mind like Christ's. The Holy Spirit has to be in all of it. We have to have the mind of Christ.

#2: Trained in the way of Jesus. We train for so many things. How are we training to follow Jesus? Are we more focused on a school we want our kid to attend? Are we more concerned with our job and the income we make? If you want to grow in prayer, pray more. If you struggle with anger, maybe you need to journal on forgiveness. If you are not sure of what the word says, maybe you need to study it more. Why would we think becoming more like Jesus would not include training?
The church is to teach you how to obey God and the word...not just know it. We need a plan and this won't happen by circumstance. The 5-10 min quiet time of years past will not transform you. We as a community are in danger of being formed by the world and not Jesus. Enter into training. Give Jesus the opportunity to transform you.

Most powerful quote for me today...."The gospel is opposed to earning NOT effort."

#3: Body building with community....more to come on this. We ran out of time!

In these times, we need Jesus and each other more than ever.

Morgan preached on Matthew 28:16-20 and discussed our mission at Redeemer to create mature disciples of Jesus Christ. We want to become a worshipping community loving God and our neighbors. He discussed the disciples and how they doubted that Jesus really arose. They doubted so that we might not doubt. Our journey is complex and may waver between trusting and questioning and that's OK. The disciples were no different than us. We should not demonize doubting and realize those seasons happen to all of us. Doubting faith is actually a sign you have faith.

"Doubt is not always a sign that a man is wrong. It may be a sign that he is thinking." Oswald Chambers

Keep in mind that Jesus is not a perfectionist about who he can use. The doubting disciples spread the gospel across the world. He can use you too!

The church needs to be a safe place for some to wrestle with doubt and be able to openly share in community doubts they may be having.
Morgan continued in vs 18 pointing out how it starts with a statement of power "All authority has been given to me." and ends with a statement of promise "I am with you always."

We are to make disciples by doing the following: Go, Baptize and Teach.
The word "disciple" is used 269 times in the bible compared to the word "Christian" which is used 3 times. Disciple is the primary image given to those following Jesus. We can claim to be Christians our whole lives and not be disciples. We can say all the right words, do all the right things, and not be a disciple.

"Talking about Jesus while ignoring the way of Jesus has created an American Christianity that is far more American than it is Christian. Paying all our spiritual attention to the message of Jesus while ignoring his practices has not only led people like me into a devastating life crisis, it has also created a country of Christians whose practical lives are divorced from their actual faith. How else do we explain a country of Christians who preach a radical gospel of Jesus while assimilating to the usual contours of American life?" Justin Earley

Has the local church failed in helping with a plan to create disciples? We are all being shaped and formed by someone or some thing. We need that to be Jesus. We are to become mature disciples of Jesus Christ.
If we focus on making disciples, we will grow the church. If we focus on growing the church, we may not create disciples.
Continue to pray and discern who God is placing in your path. Morgan emphasize we are to make disciples of ALL nations and ALL ethnicities and closed by inviting all of us to intentional discipleship.

Jon then introduced a new topic on work and faith. What does God and the word say about work? Work can and should be a beautiful thing with purpose. If you do not evangelize those at work, it doesn't mean you were not faithful. This was just the beginning of the topic around vocational discipleship.

Easter Sunday was a beautiful morning as we all gathered to celebrate the resurrection. Morgan preached from Matthew 28: 1-15. He painted the picture of snow in KS in April and how the tulip can still pop through the snow. Our lives can be like that. We live in a world full of darkness but we have hope. We have victory over death. Many live their life in denial of death and will at all costs avoid pain and suffering to avoid the inevitable. Death is unavoidable and does not discriminate.

These last 2 years with Covid have created a "forced pause" and made some painful things come to light. Many are living in a state of fear and anxiety. With racial tensions and political loyalties, families and friends are divided. Many singles are feeling more alone than ever. People are losing their faith. When we live in denial, it's easy to blame others and turn to your drug of choice. Maybe that drug is alcohol or the needle or maybe it's working all the time. Many are not doing well.
We need hope.

We need to know the resurrection happened and that Christ did rise on the 3rd day.

Morgan dug into the text and described how that after Jesus was buried the Chief Priests and Pharisees went to Pilot and told him the claim that Jesus would rise on the 3rd day and asked that he order troops to guard the tomb. They literally are spreading the word to Pilot. This is what politics in America looks like today. Many are putting their trust in Gov and not Jesus. Morgan reminded us that God is over EVERY politician. And it was also a good reminder that what some intend for evil, God can use for good.

Back to Matthew....they guarded and sealed the tomb AS IF that would hold Him back! Keep in mind the stone was not moved to let Jesus out. The stone was moved to let the women in.
Morgan closed with 3 points on how we know the resurrection happened.
#1. Transformed lives. Look at the disciples behavior. They were confused and heartbroken. They went went from a state of despair to going on mission with confidence spreading the gospel. They were prepared to suffer and die for their belief.
#2. Eye witnesses. The bible mentions over 500 witnesses to the resurrection and seeing and touching Jesus. I Corinthians 15:5-8.
#3. Look at the women. In this time, women were not considered full citizens. Their testimony would not have held up in a court of law. If someone made this story up, they would be fools to use women as their eye witnesses. The only way they use women is if the resurrection really happened this way! Love so much how God uses women to tell the resurrection story.
Come and See. Join the story. Worship. Go and Tell.
If the resurrection is true, we know everything will be OK.
