Discussing prison abolition often feels like an uphill battle, especially with people unfamiliar with the concept or unsure why criminals deserve empathy at all. In this episode, Malone plays devil's advocate as Rainforest defends prison abolition. This episode took a lot to release. In recording, Malone was interrupted by the infamous Ben David, audio was lost in the confusion and on the edit bay floor, and right in the middle of editing...I tested positive for COVID and lost access to the studio. This episode is only a very small part of what recorded for "episode 3" - which will probably now be several episodes. A lot happens in this just over 10 minute episode where Malone tells a story to try to explain why inmate life is never "pampered". Does society need prisons to function? We discuss the history and some current alternatives to prison. We also share stories about the consequences of a "just lock 'em up" attitude and what we think might serve society better.
In our first episode, we introduce ourselves by asking, "Who are we?" During this discussion we talk about our sentences and get into the topic of how powerful district attorneys are when it comes to the sentencing process.
