Dr. Rebecca is the author of the book, The Art of Talking with Children: The Simple Keys to Nurturing Kindness, Creativity and Confidence in Kids.
Science has shown that the best way to help our kids become independent, kind and happy is by talking with them, yet we often find ourselves distracted, exhausted, or at a loss as to how to have meaningful conversations.
Dr. Rebecca offers tools for communication to help you engage in more "rich talk" and shares ways to promote your children's empathy, curiosity and ability to embrace challenges, and helps you feel more confident as parent.
Enjoy the show!

In this episode, Shannon and Ashley share personal details about how they face their fears in life, even when it's really uncomfortable and scary. They both share how imposter syndrome creeps up and how they've learned that sometimes they have to take the brakes off and simply jump into the flow of where their intuition and the pull of the Universe is taking them.
You will feel so inspired to get out of your comfort zone, listen deeply to that inner voice and lean in towards the direction your dreams are taking you next.

In this episode, Shannon and Ashley share a lovely conversation with Stef Tousignant, creator of Parenting with Gratitude.
Stef is an author and parenting expert, who calls herself an imperfect parent and gratitude nerd.
Stef shares how her daily practice of gratitude has changed her outlook on life, and how it's changed her parenting style over the years. We explore how to savor the special moments in life, ways to be more present in our parenting, and how having a simple gratitude practice can help you feel better and happier.
The practice of gratitude is a compliment to self-compassion, something we mothers need more than ever while raising children these days. We are all human and learning this parenting thing as we go along. We need to practice being gentle with ourselves along the way.
Also in this episode, we talk about ways to look at imperfection and mess as examples of well-lived lives. What a beautiful perspective.
You're going to love this conversation - so let's jump right in! Enjoy the show and thanks for listening and sharing this episode with your friends.

In today's episode, Ashley and Shannon explore and guide you through the family of origin work.
What is your family of origin?
Your family of origin is the family in which you grew up in. Who was in your home during your childhood and how did that shape who you are and how you parent today?
As you reflect on your family of origin, you can become more mindfully aware of the celebrations you loved, the challanges you faced and the new intentions you want to set for your family.
Let's bring a new sense of awareness around these particular topics:
love and affection, holidays and traditions, values, important memories, sibling relationships, fights and conflict, parenting roles and dicipline.
To be intentional means we have choices. You can learn from looking back at your family of origin and how you were raised to gain greater awareness, so that you can make different choices that feel best to you and your family.
Let us know what your greatest take-away is from this episode and thanks for listening. We appreciate your support and feel grateful for you!

No matter what day this is in the New Year - today in this moment - is the new page of your life story.
Shannon and Ashley share that just because it's a New Year, doesn't mean that they are kicking it off in a "perfect" or new way.
What are you going to do with this part of your life story?
Feel encouraged, supported and inspired as you hear how Shannon and Ashley share some challenging parenting moments and some journal prompts for self-reflection.
We are so grateful you are here.

In today's show, Episode 24th, we are excited to share with you our fun conversation with Casey O'Roarty! Dive right into listening - seriously - Casey is not only awesome and full of wisdom - but so real and so dang funny. She is a Positive Discipline coach and creator of Joyful Courage.
Casey share's how rough it was becoming a mom and what she learned about herself as a stay-at-home mom during the early years.
Casey shares how some of the darker moments and the challenges she's faced in motherhood led her to learning the philosophy of Positive Discipline. This practice worked so well for her, that she says it changed the dynamic of her family, and it also led her to become a Positive Discipline parent educator.
Casey talks about how to use Positive Discipline with not only toddlers, but with teenagers. We talk about how to help our kids develop coping skills and how important it is to do our soul-work as moms.
We also explore how important it is as we are nurturing our children, that we learn how to nurture ourselves and as Casey says, "get our stuff together." One practice that has really helped Casey on her path to mindfulness is meditation, and she shares a simple way of focusing on your breath and how that helps you learn more about your triggers so that you can return to a place of calm. Such an invaluable practice in motherhood!

In today’s show, Episode 23, we’re incredibly honored to have two-time Olympic medalist, Shannon Happe, as our guest. Shannon’s last name is actually pronounced like “happy” and it’s certainly fitting for her personality. Shannon is fun and brings a fresh, but real, perspective about motherhood to the show.
Shannon’s passion for skiing, especially the moguls, began at a very young age thanks to the fact that she grew up in the mountains around Lake Tahoe.
Shannon was a member of the United States Olympic Ski Team for 12 years, won two Olympic medals, and has multiple World Cup victories under her belt but, she says that nothing has been more challenging, or rewarding, than being a mother.
Today, Shannon opens up about the isolation she felt after becoming a mom, what brought her back to herself and helped her feel connected again, her struggle with having a miscarriage, her uncertainty about having another child, why women should stop telling each other motherhood is “hard”, and the one thing she wants all mothers to know.
Shannon also talks about her upcoming business venture that is going to “help bring inspiration and movement” to the corporate world. Shannon’s new business: Team Empower Hour

Today, in Episode 22, we are back from a short hiatus and peeling back the layers of what can make a mother a highly sensitive person with Shawn Fink of abundantmama.com. Shawn has been called the "Yoda of Mamas" and is her 5th year of the Abundant Mama, her blog which has evolved into a 4 week program. She has placed over 1500 mamas onto a path of building an abundant life practice using "soul"-care (her definition of self-care), learning to trust and let go, and making time for play. She is also the mother of twin girl "tweenagers" who will be entering middle school in the fall. Shawn explains how she did not discover she was a highly sensitive person until after becoming a mother. She found she needed to become her own best friend in a world where the typical information geared toward new moms did not appeal to her. She did not enjoy leaving the house and was turned off by many things in the public realm. Triggers such as noise from the kids could bring on an overwhelming feeling of depletion and unideal reactions. Shawn further dissects high sensitivity as typically being introverted, creative, and needing time to recharge alone. There can be a sensory aspect to it as well, as she states highly sensitive people can have adverse reactions to certain sounds or light. In turn, highly sensitive people tend to be softer, more compassionate and empathetic, and very connected to their intuition. And most highly sensitive kids will go on to become highly sensitive adults. When Shawn began staying up late at night several years ago writing her novel, she began to feel empowered. She really tapped into how vital alone time was for her, and from there her blog was born and writing became an everyday thing. She now teaches moms how to tap into "the thing that makes you feel most like yourself," and encourages them to make time for that thing in the morning before the rest of the family is up. Although she says, "becoming a mother truly amplified my sensitivities," it also helped her to find what she was good at and when she felt most like herself. Carla shares that she discovered mindfulness when she just wanted to learn how to stop yelling at her kids so much.
This conversation takes on a realistic, practical and funny journey as we explore what it's like to practice being present in the midst of motherhood. Carla is the first to admit how hard parenting is, yet she shares her personal experience and simple tips on how to deal with the constant distractions in daily life and how we can find more peace, all while practicing self-compassion and grace.

We explore what it feels like to be in the "cave" of motherhood, when you feel consumed by caring for your children but also are looking for the opening and learning how to balance your own self-care needs. We get honest and open about our challenges, along with sharing our current joys. Sarah also asks us about why we started the Mindful Mama Movement in the first place! It's a lovely conversation and we feel blessed to get the opportunity to share yet another inspiring show. In today's show, we have the honor of speaking with Hala Khouri, a yoga instructor and somatic psychologist living in L.A., about healing trauma through movement, learning to step back and allow your children to forge their own path, and staying centered and connected in your parenting journey.
Hala has two boys, ages 6 and 9, co-founded a nonprofit organization called "Off the Mat Into the World" that aims to bridge yoga, activism and social justice, and still makes time to sip her coffee each day. She is genuine, relatable and provides wonderful insight into parenting in the phase she describes as a "constant state of humiliation and inspiration."
Haha reminds us that so much of our work is staying out of our children's growth and just doing our best in each moment. You can visit her website at www.halakhouri.com.
Hala will be in Kansas City in September 2017 to offer an "Off the Mat, Into the World" workshop with co-founders Seane Corn and Suzanne Sterling. The workshop is a 5 day intensive entitled "Yoga Purpose and Action" where you will explore what the world is calling on you to do and discover your purpose within a justice framework.

Quotes from the show:
"It's been an interesting journey to try to step back and do more underparenting so they (my children) can experience their own resilience and not lean on me all the time."
"What I'm trying to let go of for myself is me needing to know how much they need me or love me or that I'm a good mom. They can't meet that need for me...they just need to live their lives and I need to trust that I'm a good parent and a good person and not need that validation from them."
"I feel like so much of the disconnect that we experience in our lives is about being disconnected from our own bodies, from our sensations, from our breath. To me that's really one of the most powerful forms of healing is moving our bodies and being in relationship to our bodies."
In today’s show, episode 16, we speak with Sami Aaron. Sami is a yoga and meditation teacher who focuses on yoga nidra — a meditation and conscious relaxation practice — and pranayama — the regulation of the breath through certain techniques and exercises. She is also the Director of Training and Development for The Nature Process – which offers powerful tools for managing stress, improving mental health and releasing grief.
In this vulnerable interview, Sami talks about her own journey of walking through grief after her oldest soon took his life in 2003. She also talks about her labor and delivery experiences in the 70’s as well as how she discovered yoga nidra, pranayma and the critical role nature plays in her healing and wellness.

Some quotes from the show:
“For women giving birth today and their support group, it’s so vital to find that little bit of activism within yourself and tune in to what you body and heart are telling you.”
“When you’re in deep grief you don’t allow yourself to open up because by doing so you are opening yourself up to more grief, so it is much easier to keep it in. And I know I did for many years.”
“To be able to come to the place where you can allow joy in again is a really hard part of the journey.”
“Don’t let anybody tell you how long to grieve. Grieve as long as your heart needs to, but know that you have the opportunity to offer up that grief to others in compassion.”
Sami Aaron’s nature process workbook, Experience Your 54 Senses will be released on Amazon later this year. To learn more about The Nature Process, visit thenatureprocess.co.

In this 14th and final episode of 2016 for the Mindful Mama Movement, Shannon gifts us with 5 essential tips for how to stay mindful during the holidays. She emphasizes that we must "embrace imperfection," and that this is "a wonderful time of year to renew and to get quiet...it's going to be up to us to create the kind of season that we want - which is slower, simpler, more present."
Continuing in the spirit of slower and simpler, Shannon has included a blissful, guided meditation for deep relaxation within the second half of the episode. You will also want to make sure to go to www.mindfulmamamovement.com and sign up for our mailing list (if you haven't already) to receive an additional free guided meditation by Ashley on making space in your life.
So please treat yourself to these invaluable moments of reflection. As Shannon states, "Part of the point of the holiday season is to learn how to receive."
Additional quotes:
"Feel more grounded and reconnect to your breath...there is nothing more present than your breath."
"Let go of your need to do it all."
"Don't strive to be perfect; strive to be imperfect."

In today’s show, Episode 13, we are speaking with not one, but two amazing and creative women.
Becky Pashia and Noelle Stoffel are incredibly talented, and professional artists. Becky is the mama to three boys, ages 13, 15 and 22, and Noelle is a mama to two girls, ages six and nine.
We’re so excited to speak with both Becky and Noelle about the role creativity plays in not only the lives of children, but in the lives us mamas as well.
They feel art can be a great example for life. Making messes is part of making art. It’s important for you to take time for yourself to spend on your hobbies and relax. There’s not one specific and right way to do things.
Becky and Noelle both stress the importance of being truly present in your child’s life and noticing the little things about them to help further their creativity and interests.
We also discuss whether or not they believe it’s too late for adults to learn to paint or be creative, why Becky feels frustration and boredom are critical components of creativity, and how becoming moms effected their creative lives.
Becky and Noelle inspire us to encourage our kids to make gifts for family and friends instead of buying them and then take the time to give the gifts in creative ways, like a treasure hunt.
It’s because of this that Becky and Noelle actually created two apps that help children learn how to do this virtually in hopes it will carry over into real life.
Both of the apps, One Present, Please and Pass a Present, are available in the App Store and are linked to below.
Both Becky and Noelle are members of the Mindful Mama Movement Facebook group and will stop by to answers any questions you may have. Join us in the group to get inspired!

Today’s show, Episode 12, is a particularly special one for us because we have the incredible honor of speaking with one of our favorite authors, Katrina Kenison. Katrina is the mother of two young men in their 20’s, has been writing about motherhood for 20 years, and has published 4 books about motherhood.
We especially love that Katrina is authentic, honest, vulnerable, and shares her real life in such a beautiful way. Her words have the power to make you feel as if you're living her life right beside her.
In this episode, we specifically talk with Katrina about her experiences writing about her life as a mother (and what her family really thinks about it), her tips for writing a memoir of your own, how the ordinary moments are truly the greatest gifts, what we as mothers need to remember in the wake of the recent election, her self-care practices, and so much more.
Katrina has some incredible insights and unique approaches to parenting; including why praising our children may not always be the best way to handle certain situations.
Katrina provides an incredible example of being a Mindful Mama by making the decision to choose love over fear and reads a beautiful, and powerful, excerpt from her new book.
Katrina has been kind enough to offer to answer your questions inside the Mindful Mama Movement Facebook Group so join us there and don’t miss this incredible opportunity to connect with her.
Katrina Kenison Quotes from the show: “You want life to just be as it is and change is really the thing that we can be certain of. So, we have to learn to ride those waves of change.”
“I think it’s so easy for us to fall into a pattern of praising our children and I don’t actually think that does them any good.”
“If I had it to do over again myself, I think I would be even more conscious of the language that I used with my children.”
“When it’s over it’s really, really over. Which, I guess, is why I just encourage mothers at every age to just stay awake. Pay attention. Be aware of how fleeting it all is.”

Thank you for being here mamas. We heart you...
In today’s show, Episode 10, we are humbled to speak with Erin Heger about her powerful experience with postpartum depression (PPD).
Erin is the mother to nine-month-old Camden and is here to tell her story of going through a difficult time in the months following his birth, in hopes that it will give others going through a similar experience the permission and courage to seek help.
Erin says she enjoyed being pregnant and, though she had a previous miscarriage, she didn’t experience much discomfort and there were no health concerns.
Camden’s birth went as she had hoped and planned. In fact, she was only in the hospital for two hours before he was born. However, due to the accelerated rate of the birth, instead of feeling like a “warrior” or “Goddess” afterwards, she just felt exhausted and broken.
Unfortunately, these feelings didn’t stop once they went home. She felt everyone had lied to her about how great motherhood was.
She convinced herself things would get better, and that Camden would be less difficult, around the 12-week mark but things only got worse.
In a desperate attempt for change, she took Camden to the doctor thinking there was something wrong with him. The doctor immediately recognized it was Erin who needed help.
The diagnosis of PPD left Erin feeling shocked, confused, and ashamed. So much so that she says accepting it was one of the hardest parts of the whole process.
Listen to the show to hear more about her story and to see how you might be able to help another mama in need, or get help yourself.
Erin documented her journey on her blog as it was happening and has purposefully left the older posts up so others going through something similar might recognize their own struggles. To read these posts visit Erin’s blog here.
Erin also had an article about her experience published on Romper.com.
Erin has graciously agreed to answer your questions in the Mindful Mama Movement Facebook Group so head on over and ask away. https://www.facebook.com/groups/MindfulMamaMovement/
In today’s show, Episode 9, we have the honor of speaking with Olympic medal winner, Sydney Leroux about her recent transition into motherhood.
Sydney is the mother to a six-week old baby boy and our very own Ashley was Sydney’s doula.
She is also a professional soccer player with a World Cup title and, as a professional athlete, Sydney brings a unique perspective to show.
Most mothers experience some emotional and frustrating moments with regards to their bodies after giving birth but Sydney’s body, and how it feels and performs, is critical to her career.
In today’s show, we not only talk about her struggles with this but also about how she felt when she discovered she was pregnant while qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
In fact, she explains why her reaction to the news is the one thing she would do differently if she could go back and do it all again.
Sydney’s raw, and beautiful, emotions during this interview are moving and take us back to what it was like being new mothers for the first time.
It’s all not serious though as Sydney talks about her need for a breast milk freezer and tells her birth story that is filled with humorous moments and a few surprises.
We hope you find Sydney’s honesty refreshing and you take comfort in her words; especially if you’re on your way to becoming a new mother yourself.
Sydney now feels a bond with other mothers, who she says are all superheroes, and has offered to answer any questions someone might have for her about transitioning into motherhood and then transitioning back into your career.
To learn more about Sydney, check out her website or follow her on Instagram.
To connect with Sydney, just head over to the Mindful Mama Movement Facebook Group and post your questions for her.
In today’s show, Episode 8, we’re talking with Karen Maezen Miller.
Not only is Maezen a wife and a mother, she is also a Zen Buddhist priest at the Hazy Moon Zen Center in Los Angeles, California.
Maezen has written three books and several anthologies about spirituality in everyday life. She leads retreats around the country and we’re honored she’s with us today to share her valuable insights on motherhood from a Zen Buddhist perspective.
Maezen became a mother at 42 years old and prefers to call the transition into motherhood more of a “catastrophe” and she explains why in today’s episode.
She also impresses how important it is to be very clear about your life, and what is actually happening, at each moment in time. Without doing so, she feels you can never truly be open to the answers life provides, understand the energy you project onto those around you, or be able to handle situations that don’t go your way without becoming depressed.
Maezen uses this philosophy when parenting her own child, and admits that it’s easier said than done, in order to not make herself the center of her daughter’s life.
We also speak with Maezen about a few passages we absolutely love from two of her books; including why fatigue is a gift and why she believes doing laundry is a perfect representation of life itself.
Lastly, Maezen uses her expertise to offer tips for those looking to start meditating.
Maezen’s ability to step into herself and take full responsibility for her thoughts and feelings will inspire you to look at your own life and see where you can practice quieting your mind and opening your heart. We adore Maezen and think you will as well.

She talks about how we can shed guilt so we can give both our kids and our work the attention they need.
Dana says the word "work" is not a negative thing and that we all have ups and downs on the journey of motherhood. She shares how our practice is to make personal daily assessments so we can learn how to listen to our gut and see what's not working so we don't ignore what we love and so that we can truly go for what we want.
Dana shares how to create a dream maker and deal breaker list so you can see where to apply energy in your life. You are going to love this conversation!
