Congrats to Dusty Baker and the Houston Astros on their championship, and from a strictly selfish, Metsian perspective, we're thankful we won’t have to live in another winter where a division rival is world champions (still, congrats to the Phillies on their phantastic playoff run.)
Quickly and swiftly, the Mets signed Edwin Díaz to a record 102 million, five year deal, though Jacob deGrom and Taijuan Walker opted out and became free agents today. We’ll examine all the free agents the Mets have and look outside the franchise for other moves we hope they make.
And since we have not been on air since the Mets crapped the bed against the Padres, we’ll look over the good, the bad and the ugly that was the 2022 New York Mets.

The Mets' lead is "down" to seven games, and the injuries are piling up. Though both avoided tthe IL for now, Pete Alonso and Starling Marte are day-to-day. (Fun fact his first ever instance of chest pain happened when JT Snow hit the game tying home run off Armando Benitez in game 2 of the 2000 NLDS. He can still hear the clank the ball made when it hit the top of the wall before going out.)

The New York Mets have reached the all-star break in first place for the first time since 2007. It has been a rather interesting (slightly more than) first half journey to get there. The Mets saw their season have a delayed start because of COVID-19. Then, they had to weather a slew of injuries (18 players on the IL at one point). We saw names like Jake Hager, Johneshwy Fargas, and Mason Willimas. Yet, the Mets persevered. Most recently, they played 33 games in 31 days, and came out of that in first place. They saw Jacob deGrom experience three "minor" injuries, and Taijuan Walker do a stint on the IL. They lost in excrutiating fashion on Sunday, but you get the idea, they're still in first place.

Howard is the radio and TV Voice of the Indianapolis Indians for more than 40 years. He is inducted into three Indiana Halls of Fame and has filled in on the Mets, White Sox and Cleveland Cavaliers broadcasts. He is also a professional speaker and a Brooklyn College graduate.

During the summer he covers the Brooklyn Cyclones from MCU Park and during the rest of the year he is a communications student at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. He became a Mets fan in 2006 and still roots through the good times and the bad.
Though there are many issues that have led to the Mets losing record entering the break, none are more glaring than the blown saves, a category they lead the league in. Could they possibly go on a run if they can even remotely get this under control or should they cut their losses and sell off before the hard trade deadline of July 31st?
Brodie Van Wagenen, according to media sources, threw a chair across the room before telling Mickey Callaway to go conduct "your (bleepin') press conference." At what point does this season become his fault as opposed to the coaches?

After the first 4 games with him at the helm, how do we perceive the change?
The fielding has been atrocious, as they have the least amount of chances out there yet lead the NL in errors. One of the culprits has been the regression of Amed Rosario at shortstop, and they may be combatting that by getting him reps in center field. Is this just yet another example of fitting a square peg into a round hole or could Rosario actually have a future out there with no one having run away with the CF positon?
Pete Alonso today broke Darryl Strawberry's rookie record with his 27th HR...and less than halfway through. He could be making a run at the ML rookie record, let alone the Mets full season HR record. Let's just continue to bask in how awesome Alonso has been.
And McNeil just keeps McNeilin'. He got the day off Sunday but is hitting .342 on the season. Do we think he will make the All-Star team?

Injuries have lead to some shuffling of the roster. Of course, after getting heat for a perceived lack of hustle, Robinson Cano pulls a hammy legging out a double. Of course. Rajai Davis got called up after Brandon Nimmo was placed on the IL and immediately makes his presence felt with a 3-run home run to cap off a 6-run come-from-behind inning Wednesday night. What is to be expected of him and will he stick around?
Carlos Gomez has yet to truly make his presence felt with the bat though his notorious energy has been there both with on-the-field flare as well as cheerleading from the bench. He's been walking some so he hasn't been completely absent. Can he ever regain his Major League prowess?

But could we expect a snap of the finger to fix the dysfunctionality? No. That is a process, and that process will have bumps and bruises...but maybe we'll get there?
There is some good news on the horizon as it seems Michael Conforto is ahead of schedule...but The Juan Lagares situation is as foggy as ever and Rafael Montero is still on the team. Oy.
