Sooo it's May and believe it or not, we're STILL having coaching moves down here in the Coastal Bend. The guys discuss the vacancies, the jobs that have been filled, and the ones that are still out there. The guys are also joined by a FEW special guests that will help break some BIG show news.
For the 1st time in over 40 years, the Calallen Wildcats are starting fresh. On Monday April 8th, the Calallen ISD Board of Trustees approved the hire of their 18th head coach in program history. We sit down with Coach Reeve and ask the typical questions, what is the first thing on your grocery list? Do you shampoo AND condition? No, but really the guys sit down and ask what it's like to step in in the footsteps of giants and what should we expect in Year 1 of the Reeves Era in C-Town
In what has been an event full offseason for football coaches in the Coastal Bend, today it just got ratcheted up to an 11 with the announcement of Refugio’s Jason Herring stepping away from coaching. Herring spent 17 years at Refugio where appearances at Jerry World were as regular as clockwork. Joining the show is the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Len Hayward to talk about what lies ahead for one of the hottest jobs in the state.
The Calallen job search and the fact that CISD is using a professional search firm has local folks "in their feels" about the whole thing. When did search firms become the norm (or are they) and what does a search firm provide to a district when looking for an Athletic Director? Jeni Neatherlin from Solid Oak Leadership jumps in to talk about search firms, how common/uncommon they are today, and what services they provide to a district that employs them.
For the first time in 40+ years, the Calallen Wildcats job is OFFICIALLY open. What does that mean for the local area? What does that mean for the state? Speaking of state, what is the state of the Calallen Football program? Greg Tepper from Dave Campbell's Texas Football jumps in to talk a little about what this job opening means to the State and Len Hayward from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times jumps in as well to get the local perspective.
The 2023 Football season may have ended in December, but there's ALWAYS time to talk football. 2024 is the biannual UIL District Realignment. Feb 1st is like a second Christmas for all coaches across the state of Texas. Some Coaches will be happy with the results and some will feel as if they got a lump of coal from a store with a "no return" policy. To break down how this goes down, the Texas UIL director of Athletics jumps in to talk about what goes into realignment. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Quinton Martinez also comes on to help carry the load with Corpus Christi Miller HFC Justen Evans, Sinton AD/HFC Michael Troutman, and Alice AD/HFC JR Castellano. We even got a late surprise from the RGV to talk 6A down south from Kevin Narro! We're jam-packed with tons of info today and we went WAAAAY long, hope you enjoy it!
The 2023 Texas High School Football season came to a close on Saturday night. Yeah sure, there are still some All-Star games to play in the area, but it's over. Lots of wild things happened in 2023, some good, some bad. Lots of feel-good stories, both on and off the field, but just like all the other seasons, it's been a fun and entertaining year. Join us as we talk about some of the latest developments and talk about the season that was. We hope you enjoyed our 6th season of the show and we're glad you found us this year. We hope we did a good job covering these kids and these programs, but as always, thanks for listening.
So we've got mixed feelings about where the season is at now. 1st, we're 3 weeks away from State! YAY ! 2nd, we're 3 weeks away from State. BOO! It seems like the season just started and it's almost gone in just a few blinks of the eye. Well, Justin is working nights right now and leaves Jacob alone to wax poetic alone on the subject. But all is NOT lost, Joining the show tonight is Quinton Martinez from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times to talk about the games he covered last week and Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell's Texas Football jumps on to talk about some of the upsets around the state and his mock 2024 UIL District Realignments he just put out this week. We hope you enjoy the show today, and we look forward to having Justin back next week!
We've hit week 14 of the Texas HS Football season and we'vemade it this far with some definite eye openers. We saw some historic runs last week thatcontinue to this week, some National records. But before we jump into week 14, Assistant AD and Director of Football for the UIL jumps in to talkplayoff site selection and what it takes to get ready for State at Jerrah'sWorld. So that's pretty cool. There's a LOT of interesting match-ups this weekthat could lead to some colossal match-ups in the Region Finals. Enough words, BUCKLE UP AND LET'S GOOOO!!!
So we had a HUGE helping of Crow from Week 11, and if that wasn't enough, we even had a slice of humble pie for dessert. We don't care what anyone says, they BOTH taste terrible. So we're back after a week's hiatus, so we'll give our takes on the Bi-District round and we'll look at this week's Area match-ups. Who do you think will survive for Thanksgiving Football? Hit us up in the comments.
If you thought Week 9 was Cray, you should stick around and listen to what went down in Week 10! Can you believe we're already here, the FINAL week of the 2023 regular season. Man, we hardly knew you 23. Fights, touchdowns, beards, playoff droughts ended and HALLOWEEN! same script as always, but we add a little packet of playoff spicy talk in the end. As always, thanks for tuning in and tell your friends!
What a wild Week 9 it was, not just here, but around the state! We're getting closer to the playoff push and pretty soon, we're gonna have to dust off the old "District Tie Breaker" rules to see how some of these districts are gonna pan out. it's a quick one this week, so don't blink, you just might miss it
After a week off because Jacob missed jUstin so much, the boys are back to talk about whats new, Jacob's trip to Snows BBQ, Realignment rumors, and whatever else keeps the boat afloat. We missed yall, soooo we hope you missed us as well. Party on & Lets go!
We're on the downward slope of the regular season, and you can KINDA see the playoff seats beginning to unfold...sort of..for the teams that started district...Just like previous weeks of late, not-a-one surprise in Week 6, that tide MAY begin to turn here in Week 7. So without further adieu, here we go
Ok, no matter HOW you look at it, we are officially at the mid-point of the season. ...Already....seems like we just started. Lots of pre-show banter this week, lots going on, and fortunately, it DOES NOT involve Travis Kelce, but does have a surprise announcement! Week 5 brought very little surprise and week 6 seems to do about the same, so we'll stop wasting your time with the written word, and start spitting fire
The boys pick up where they left off last week with media credentials. Elon wants to charge EVERYONE to use X (Twitter), what gives? Week 4 has come and gone, and that's usually the week where we've got everyone figured out. But the jury is still out on a few teams, Flour Bluff and G-P just to name a few. Week 5 brings some district openers, all of CCISD and the Victoria schools will kick off the district slate on Thursday night. BUT there's still some pretty interesting matchups on the slate this week, so instead of bore you with more of the show summary, let's get to it!
Referee's in the news again. Careful where you use that school charge card Coaches. You've seen the Bush push, but have you seen the Brahama Boost? You know, we've said this time and time again, but don't EVER use this show as your betting resource! Week 3 was a bit of a shocker in a few senses. FLour Bluff left our Heads scratching, GP was off to another slow start and London - OG was a barn burner. Week 4 is the big CCISD bye week before district begins, but there are some intresting match-ups on the docket this week....sooooo LET'S GOOO!!!
Referee shortage is REAL. Runge moving to Six-Man Football. Melissa v China Spring shocker. Liberty Hill v Hutto broke the scoreboard. Week 2 played its part and provided a couple of upsets that no one saw coming and some that people saw from a mile away. But most of the week was standard material. Week 3 provides some interesting match-ups as we get closer to the district slate. Wow, we're at Week 3 already.
Did you happen to catch the train wreck that was the new Bishop Sycamore doc on Max? Wow. The guys give a Ryder Harrison update and talk the results from our Week1 picks. The Helmet Sticker award, presented by 97 Sports Promotions, is back, so that's a good thing as the guys award the first of the season. and Finally, the guys look at a slow Week 2 and discuss the matchups.
Welcome to the 2023 TXHSFB season! The fellas dust off the mics and talk Swamp Kings, Work, Life, and other banter before they jump into the Week 1 slate. Man there's some great match-ups this week and we can't wait for Thursday night!
From Cop to Coach. How do you go from patrolling the streets of your hometown to patrolling the sidelines in your hometowns FIRST and most storied high schools? According to Corpus Christi Miller's Justen Evans, by putting your faith in God. In his 6 seasons in Miller, they have put together a run this school has not seen since they were Corpus Christi High School and winning state Championships. He and his staff have awoken the ghosts and school spirt on the North Side and haven't looked back. But with winning comes expectations, and managing those expectations has become 2nd nature to these guys. Expect another great season (what did we say about expectations lol) from the Bucs in '23!
To most folks, if you told them they would be an AD their 8th year in coaching, they would laugh and shrug it off, not Ruben. After a quick start in Crosby under HC Jeff Riordan, he was snatched up by CC Miller HFC Justen Evans. After helping produce some of the best offenses in the state, Coach Garcia headed south to take over a struggling Falfurrias program. After 3 seasons, he turned Fal into a playoff team that was a conversion short of a district championship. Now he's in Kingsville where he hope to turn the fortunes of another program who's been down for a few years
Teaching Kids to Struggle Well. Tuloso-Midway AD/HFC Kris O'Neal didn't have an easy life growing up in Arkansas. Little did he know at the time, it would mold his coaching philosophy and eventually run his program. He's had lots of help along the way, cutting his teeth under the Legendary Randy Allen (yes, THAT Randy Allen) at Abilene Cooper in 1993. Year 2 for O'Neal and the Warriors saw a drop in classification to 4A-D1 and a playoff birth. Season 2 could be the catalyst for future success in year 3 and beyond.
In what was an eventful off-season for Coaches in the Coastal Bend, Jacob Bible takes over the reigns at Rockport-Fulton. Coach Bible cut his coaching teeth in Oklahoma where he played HS ball and collegiantly at Southwestern Oklahoma State. About 13 years ago, he saw the light and moved south of the Red River and began his career in the Lone Star State at Waco-Connally. With a couple of HC stints at Kermit & Venus and a couple of State Titles at Aledo on HFC Tim Buchanan's staff, he brings a wealth of knowlege to the Coastal Bend. He's hit the ground running at RF and the sky is the limit for the Pirates in 2023.
The Mustangs have a new head man for 2023. Travis Chrisman, a coaches son and former Mustang himself, checks in after 3 seasons as the Offensive Coordinator for Boerne Champion High School. Previous to that, he was the AD/HFC at New Diana HS. Coach Chrisman is a firm believer in airing the ball out and using every inch of the filed to spread guys out. Good thing for him that he's got an excellent QB/WR duo of Aidan Jackobsohn and Jaydon Smith. Expect the Mustangs to compete for the 15-4A D2 crown this season, and watch that offense put up some points AND some yards.
Entering his 8th season and coming off 1-9 campaign in 2022, Coach Huerta is uncharted waters. Coach talks about his roots as a Coaches son and his aspirations of becoming a doctor out of High School. He talks about his success at Odem and his most recent 1-9 season and how to navigate being a small school AD and some of the unique challenges it brings. With a lot of experience coming back and a district with a lot of question marks, expect a bounce-back 2023 from the Owls.
How do you become one of the hottest's names in the TXHSFB world? You get names as one of the states best 40 coaches under 40 years of age. How do you do that? Just ask Robstown's Gage Perry. Starting out from a small town basketball loving kid, to an offensive mad mad, who likes to spread out the offense and take it for a quick jaunt on the autobahn. Perry has had some breakneck offenses at all the stops he's made asan OC and 3 years ago, he's brought that to Robstown, and it may be taking longer than usual, The Town has gievn total buy in and the results are being seen.
Coach JR Castellano in in his 1st year as the head man in Alice. After the last few years in Taft where he led the Greyhounds to their most successful season since the 80's in 2022, he steps up a few classifications for a new challenge. After a lengthy career where he learned from some of the best minds in TXHSFB, JR has an interesting take on how to be a successful AD and how home life plays a MAJOR part in it. - We have a little technical difficulty during the episode and rather than start over, we kept it because it adds character. Hope you enjoy!
Coach Troutman is entering his 5th Season as the Captain of the Pirates ship. in his previous seasons, the Sinton athletic program, boys AND girls, had had a very successful run in that time. Coach, who is a Sinton native and Alum, literally wears his Sinton Pride on his arm, talks about what it takes to be successful in this business and his vision on the 2023 Football season

You know, when it comes to recruiting, it's like drinking from a firehose with all the info, rumors, NIL, transfer portal, and Lions, Tigers, and Bears....OH MY! So to help clear the air (sort of), we brought in Rice University's Director of Player Personnel and Recruiting Innovation Liasion, Marco Regalado. He's gonna help us and YOU how to navigate this new world of recruiting. This episode is a MUST-LISTEN for any athlete who wants to extend thier playing career past high school.
You can set your watch to the times we are wrong, and boy this week was a doozie. The guys catch up on the weekly banter and they talk all the playoff results and look ahead to the Region 4 Semis
Work is still pretty good (for the most part) so the guys are back this week. They catch up a little on the goings on from last week's bi-district round and look at the interesting match-ups this round presents!
Work has had the guys a little tied up since last Wednesday, so that gave no opportunity for a show this week. however, Jacob was able to carve out a little 15 minute interview with Skidmore-Tynan RB/LB Marcus Gabriel. If you're unfamiliar with Marcus story, you'll definitely want to check in! See you all next week....Hopefully
Now that our weeks are aligned, smh, we're gonna start looking ahead. Like WAY ahead. The playoffs are around the corner so we'll start looking at the 1st round match-ups, and even start looking at some potential second-round games as well. Seeding and playoff spots are still going to be impacted by the week 11 games on some districts, so we'll look at that too. Robbie Chavez will also jump on to talk about the 5A matchups since that's his neck of the woods. The guys also award, the 97 Sports Promotions Helmet Sticker awards and The Elite Tank Solutions Player of the Week.
Our Weeks are all messed up. SURPRISE! a daytime show. A few surprises this week as the regular season inches closer to closing out. Some records go down and some personal accomplishments are met. We sit down with Alice's AD/HFC Kyle Atwood and QB Cutter Stewart to discuss one of those. Recaps, Game(s) of the week, helmet stickers, and look aheads.
Oh where has the season gone? in the blink of an eye were at week 9 of the #txhsfb season. Can't believe Rey Castillo is already asking for basketball info. Speaking of Rey, he'll be joining Jacob and Justin to talk the games of the week, and maybe a second guest as well. We'll find out about that as we get into the show.
THE WAIT IS OVER! The bigger school weekly matchups are really starting to get saucy. the guys review the week that was and dive into the eye-catching match-ups this week. we're on a collision course for Miller v Vets IV (or V whatever). IS it too early to start talking about playoffs? Cause we might just do that. We have a special guest to talk about our Game of the Week and we finish up with our weekly helmet sticker awards and our Player of the Week winner!
It's a good thing that Spud didn't bet money on his picks. A winning streak comes to an end, a state title contender flex's their muscles, AND STILL.....more surprises! Buckle up kids, it's football time!
More tumultuous affairs in the Coastal Bend. Lots of exciting games and of course more surprises and flat out confusing results. Today we debut our new Helmet Sticker segment and give our FIRST EVER AWARDS! Also, We bring back Player of the Week!! CCISD is back this week after the WHOLE district took the week off...wow.
Just when you think you got everything ALLLLLL FIGURED OUT.....your winners lose and your losers win. Please don't use us for ANY type of sports wagering. Week 3 was cool, but still had lots of surprises, and week 4 looks to be full of a lot more. Enjoy
We think we said this in the past, but it usually takes till weeks 3-4 to really figure these teams out. And boy oh boy, does that really ring true after this week. Sheesh
After a LOOOONG hiatus, Justin & Jacob are back to FINALLY talk some football. After some brief and hair-pulling delays, they finally get things going and spit the football word, just like your ears like it. They discuss and PROVE how their campus visits have indeed guaranteed victory and deep playoff runs for those schools and just go over the week that was. Lots of viewer/listener interaction...we love it guys, so don't be afraid to chime in. We're glad you've stuck with us for so long, and we hope you enjoy the episode. It's great to be back!
WE'RE BACK IN AUDIO FORM, AND LET US TELL YOU, IT FEELS SOOOO GOOD!!!! The fellas sit down with Coach Dodge and talk "the Circuit", Retirement, the 2021 Season, and The Todd Dodge Football Camp, held at Gregory-Portland HS, July 11-13. So Jake forgot to turn his mic on (it's been a minute) so we apologize for his echo this episode. It won't happen again.
