The root of the word “human” is the same as the word “humility.” It all means literally “on the ground.” From dust we came, and to dust we shall return. When we hear each other’s fears, anxieties, and pain, we can return to the ground of hope… that we are all experiencing the pains of being human. This week, we remember to look first at our neighbor as a person, not a position. Beginning conversations this way may help us to stay human and “on the ground” with one another rather than needing to come out “on top.” Worship online with thetable.live. This is the final week of our three-week worship series called Flourishing: God’s Vision for Creation. Each week we are holding readings from scripture alongside ways in which God’s vision for creation is flourishing within us and also all around us.
Rev. Dr. Matt Skinner writes, “This passage offers…an opportunity to reflect on the gospel’s relationship to health and wholeness. When Jesus heals people of their ailments, his acts are not symbolic of the salvation he provides. They are a piece of that salvation. We miss that when we make ‘salvation’ into an otherworldly concept or a primarily spiritual condition. Jesus devotes himself to ensuring human flourishing in body, mind, spirit, and community….At the same time, Jesus’ ministry does not totally eliminate the things that assail our well-being. The people Jesus heals, we presume, get sick again and die. Jesus is a healer, yes, but his purpose entails more than spreading temporary wellness…Giving support to harassed people, feeding hungry people (6:35–44), and healing sick people have consequences. Those actions alter economies in households and neighborhoods. They transform relationships. They urge people to reconsider old allegiances. They give people hope. In a world where cynicism and fear are effective means of controlling people and stifling widespread human flourishing, too many hopeful people become threatening. Yet hope cannot remain hidden. It doesn’t work that way.”

Terror and amazement covered their bodies like a blanket; leaving them in silence. The faithful silence of the women creates space for the mystery and power of God’s presence to resound. Resurrection doesn’t just pull back the lid from an ancient tomb in Israel or uncover a single grave stone from history. We begin our Lenten worship series, Sabbath Rest: Wendell Berry and the Sabbath Poetry of Lent, on this Ash Wednesday. Jesus challenges us to give, pray, fast, and value in ways that aren’t paraded out in public for all to see, but rather take place “in secret” – hidden even from ourselves (“do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing”). Jesus’ repeated emphasis here points to something essential about genuine love: it bubbles up from our innermost heart, not from any desire to impress or acquire status. In this final week of a three-week worship series, we will explore Father Richard Rohr’s reading of the Sermon on the Mount with attention to final verses of Jesus’ sermon. Father Richard writes in Jesus’ Alternative Plan: The Sermon on the Mount, “Like any good spiritual teacher, Jesus sums up his sermon by calling his listeners to a choice, or an ‘altar call,’ as the tent meetings would describe it. The options are set before us in very clear and decisive fashion. ‘Do you want the old world order, or do you want the new one that I have just described?’” (202).
