In a world that's so digital - full of text messages, email, social media, zoom calls, FaceTime, etc. it can sometimes make me feel less connected to those I love. Which is why I believe it's so important we prioritize building deep relationships with others and have a community of people to live life with. To me, community means more than just having different friends that I hang out with - it represents having people in my life who truly know me, who love me and who walk through all seasons of life with me.

In today's episode I talk about 5 different reasons why community is so powerful and why I believe we should be more intentional in cultivating it.

Recently I experienced an intense windstorm, and it was going to be hours long through the night. I was exhausted and just wanted to go to sleep but felt anxious at damage that could be done to our house - would a tree fall? Would a window break? I was praying fervently but still didn't fall asleep. I decided to put in ear plugs and within minutes was sound asleep.

This experience made me realize that during the storms we face in life, maybe we need to put in proverbial earplugs and block out the noises around us so that we can rest. I talk about different ways we can do that on today's episode.

Following last week's episode on dealing with mean people, I thought it would be helpful to talk about boundaries.

In this episode I answer questions like:

-Why do boundaries matter?

-What does an actually boundary look like?

-Am I a mean person for putting up boundaries?

-Does this relationship require a conversation before a boundary is created?

-How should the conversation go?

Whether it's someone in your past, someone you're dealing with today, a stranger or a client you work with, it's important to realize that most of the time, when someone is mean to you, it likely has nothing to do with you.

So don't dwell on it. Don't let mean people's comments have any power in your life. Don't internalize their comments. And certainly don't give any undeserved energy to it!

Easier said than done. It's hard to shake things off sometimes.

I don't mention this until the end of the episode, but I want to make sure I clarify a couple things before you jump in and listen today:

  1. I am not excusing hurtful behavior. I wholeheartedly believe in accountability and consequences. I just want to provide you with a different perspective on how to view / better understand the mean people you'll come into contact with and help you realize it likely doesn't have anything to do with you.
  2. Healing is a very personal journey. I don't want this episode to come across like a bumper sticker answer on how to “feel better." Not my intention at all. I'm not providing advice on how to heal from hurtful people but shedding some light on understanding the “why” behind their actions. So take what's helpful in this episode and ignore the rest if it doesn't serve you.

I love when the seasons change, don't you?

It's a great time to think about our current rhythms and evaluate if something in our routine needs to change. Instead of looking to January 1st as the time to set new goals or habits, I instead think about it from one season to the next. On this week's episode I talk about some of the reasons why I'm grateful for seasons changing and what that represents to me. My intention is to encourage you to think about what you want from fall and what things might need to be added or removed from your plate to align with what you want to experience and how you want to feel.

This week's episode is for anyone who is in a season of waiting. For anyone waiting for the outcome, or waiting for a prayer-filled, hoped-for answer. I want to encourage you and remind you to just take it 24 hours at a time. God has already gone before you and the portion He's giving you to walk through is today, these next 24 hours. He's not asking you to figure out the next 72 hours, next week or next month. Just today.

When I've walked through hard seasons, when the next 24 hours in front of me feels overwhelming, there are a handful of things I'll do that will help center my mind, ground my soul and ease my anxiety. Go to https://www.wakeupyourlifepodcast.com/ to sign up for my weekly emails!

This week's episode is part 1 of 2 - I'm discussing 6 foundations for a thriving marriage! These aren't in any particular order (I believe they're all important) and this isn't a comprehensive list, just the main ones that stand out in the marriage Isaac and I have together.

Isaac and I don't have all the answers when it comes to marriage and we're still learning and growing. But over the past several years we've known each other we've focused on growing these different areas of our relationship and it's been so impactful for the health of our marriage.

I booked Isaac and I a couple's golf lesson. Intentionally putting myself in a situation to be critiqued by a PGA Tour Pro was so far outside of my comfort zone I couldn't even begin to tell ya! But I knew this would mean the world to Isaac and I love him a lot so that was my motivation.

And going through this experience was exactly what I needed. Not only for my golf game to improve but also for my own perspective.

In this week's episode I talk about my experience and the realizations I had that could also be applied to so many more areas of my life than just golf. So even if you don't like golf I know you'll still enjoy this episode!

We quickly let our schedules and to-do lists fill up with so many responsibilities - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is if you're running on empty, experiencing burnout or resent the responsibilities in your life.

Intentionally planning life-giving activities is so essential in sustaining my energy and my joy so that I can serve those around me in the way I truly want to.
