This episode was originally recorded on the Strength to Strength Podcast. In this show, Philip Hess is interviewed on the Atonement. Philip has written a book titled, "Penal Substitution on Trial: How Does the Death and Life of Jesus Save Us?" It is available on Amazon.

In this episode, Jesse Morrell evaluates Penal Substitution over against the Governmental View. Jesse peaks to a church in Illinois about the governmental necessity for penalty within God's moral government, and consequently the governmental necessity for the atonement in the remission of penalty. What are the governmental problems of pardon that the atonement overcomes? What are the purposes of penalty that the atonement fulfills? He also explains why the debt analogy for the atonement should be avoided in sharing the gospel.

There are problems with Penal Substitution. Hal addresses five problems in this video.
1- No scriptural support.
2- No logical place for forgiveness
3- No logical place for mercy from God the Father
4- Penal Substitution logically ends in Limited Atonement or Universalism.
5 - Sin can't be transferred.
