No matter where you're at. No matter where you're headed. This episode shares a powerful thought you can call on when you're making progress, needing to revise a plan, needing to take a weird or scary action.
As a leader, you face dozens of decision points a day - keep doing some things, stop doing some things, and start new things, what to do, how to do it, and when to do it.
This one thought can help you pivot out of a fixation, into a more neutral space, and eventually into the next step that will help you create the outcome you want.

Reflection – Personal (within the business) – Based on Simon Sinek’s Why X 5
Reflection – As a team, company
Intention – Answer this both personally and as a team/company
Planning - Putting intention into action
Eliminating the pressure and time crunches and budgets - when you WANT to gift give, finding or making what you really want to give is like a full on quest.
You have to either shop from what’s available and hope what you really want exists, is accessible and available. Or, you have to have a high enough level of skill, creativity and supplies to make what you really want.
It’s the same with the decisions we make.
You make decisions based on what you have at that time - what you know, what you think, what you feel.
So for all those decisions you are actively making, give yourself a little grace.
And for any past decisions you may be regretting- past you deserves some forgiveness and grace too.

Beating yourself up over past decisions? Or is regret weighing you down?
The truth of what past you did was to make the best decision you knew to make based on the information, thoughts, and emotions you had at that moment.
Looking back, even those regrettable decisions can have value, purpose, or/and pleasure.

From missed opportunities, to lost loves, to realities that are different from your dreams, grief shows up in big and small ways all the time but ESPECIALLY during the Holidays. When we're expected to engage in norms, rituals, and gatherings shared by others, the absence of what we love, loved, or wanted can feel even more stark.
Today's episode shares what grief is, how to cope, and my own reflections from that acute pain of loss.

Mansplaining (which is a terrible communication foible of well intentioned people of all genders), happens when people don’t know how to communicate.
Conversations can feel hard. They can BE hard.
What goes through your mind when you think about having to start a conversation with someone?
A lot, right?
Introverts or extroverts, internal and external
processors alike - connecting with other humans presents a ton of emotion and often times inhibitions.
To keep it really simple, this week’s podcast talks through the self coaching you need to connect in a way that is honest, open, and creates confidence.
You want to watch your judgments, get a confirmation or consent that they’re interested in taking, set the tone you want to nurture, and give the clues and cues that help them feel safe and connected too.
More in this week’s episode…
Does saying yes to something mean you have to say no to something else?
No.
This is not a rule. Boundaries don’t have to be all or nothing.
This is not a universal truth. You can design and choose.
This is not a corner you have to be forced into. Boundaries don’t have to suck.
Now that that’s clear, let’s talk about when you do honor your boundaries.
Because you creating and honoring your boundaries for reasons that you love will always support everyone impacted.

Sharing with others has been one of the hardest and most rewarding chapters of my personal growth in recent years. I share with you some of my thoughts and a real life sharing win.

Have you ever experimented with what rest feels the best, when?
This may be a bizarre idea so think about it like this…You have a very custom, individualized sweet spot for everything in your life. You have your favorite order of coffee, go-to playlist, and what I’m willing to bet is a very specific idea of what would be the best vacation ever.

When our VALUES are clear - we are unable to passively live and let die. We are unable to idly watch or ignore. PERSONAL stories help us UNDERSTAND what MATTERS, what we VALUE, and then - we ACT.
Activate is creating the safe place to hear and understand. To learn and ask. To feel and fear. To have safety in the emotional process of uncovering what is REAL and what we WANT to make REAL. Then being with each other in CREATING that RESULT by taking INTENTIONAL, ALIGNED ACTION from a place of TRUTH, AUTHENTICITY, for reasons that MATTER to me on a PERSONAL level.

Manuals are the set of expectations we have about how others should be, think, feel, or behave.
We can NEVER - NEVER - control what ANYone else does or even know what someone else THINKS or FEELS, yet we put SOOOO much weight into it.
My coaching brain knows that whatever it is that we’re looking for someone else to prove ABOUT US - is what we NEED to create for ourselves. Worth. Acceptance. Value. LOVE.
Also, manual is in play anytime we’re resentful, or disappointed, or disgusted, or frustrated - and those feelings show up as part of the breadcrumb trail back to what we really need to focus on and what we’re ready to grow into.

Observation is one of your best assets - ESPECIALLY when things are hard.
When you make your emotions the antagonist in the screenplay of your life - then the arc is when you defeat your emotions. It's the only path that story can take.
Couple problems there - the moral of that story means that you can't ever really trust yourself (since you are the one who had the emotions and they turned out to be the villains), and, since your focus was on overcoming the adversity of feelings, that's a really empty victory.
But imagine that you make your emotions play the role of supporting characters or tools that you, as the hero in this story, can use to accomplish what you want and overcome adversity in the face of challenges? THAT is the story that ends in victory. And how much more fun is that?
In today's episode, I show you my thought work as I observe my own responses (and resistance) to doing homework around how I want to (and have not of late been doing a great job) of loving myself.

In today's episode of The Diary of an Inspired Leader's podcast, I walk you through my personal self-coaching as I explore why love feels hard - my clues about what may be going on, and some reflections to help me gently, kindly, be curious about what may be hiding in my heart.
This was recorded before the war in Ukraine started. But this work of finding the pain, observing the resistance, and articulating the desires of your heart, is the same regardless of circumstance.
It's not the silver bullet. It's not the solution. it is the start.

Meet Inspired Leader Award Winners, Catherine Preston!
Catherine Preston currently serves as the Senior Director of Academic Advising & Transfer Services at the University of South Alabama. She is from Bowling Green, Kentucky, and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Literature from The University of Mississippi and Western Kentucky University. Catherine has had the good fortune to work in several positions in higher education that have afforded her unique and challenging experiences and opportunities, specifically in conceptualizing, developing, and implementing various student programs and workshops, working with diverse student populations, helping students, parents, and faculty fully understand the importance of academic planning as it pertains to first and second-year student retention and persistence to graduation, and developing cooperative and collaborative campus-wide programs and relationships.
Catherine helms a high-performing unit at The University of South Alabama. The Academic Advising & Transfer Services office serves students as well as other student support offices across campus. Through proactive, appreciative outreach and communication, her unit is a driving force on campus in helping South students persist into years two and three. Catherine's reporting structure and data sharing is highly respected and valued on campus, and she helps lead South in improving institutional retention. In the almost seven years of providing support for students, South has achieved record first year retention numbers, the second highest record amid a global pandemic.
Academic Advising & Transfer Services currently serves all first-year students along with a large percentage of second-year students. The team also works with students who are interested in pursuing law school admission or a professional health field. Additionally, through the Pathway USA program, advisors work with prospective transfer students at collaborating institutions to help reduce excessive credits in their transfer to South. By adding leadership coaching to advisors' skill sets, she hopes advisors will be better equipped to assess students' strengths and needs and help students devise personalized plans of action that allow them to work towards achieving their academic and career goals.
Catherine serves on various University committees, most notably the Student Success Team, and has been instrumental in developing many programs adopted at South, such as academic milestones, meta majors, an online advising training manual, and ROAR (Reaching Out in Absence Response). She currently serves as the President of the Emerald Coast Academic Advising Network, an organization that connects academic advisors from across the gulf coast region for professional development and networking opportunities. She is a member of the 75,000 Degrees Talent Hub, a community-wide collaborative designed to increase postsecondary attainment by bringing together Mobile’s K-12, higher education, business, and community partners. She also created SouthALACADA, South's allied membership of NACADA - the National Academic Advising Association - which leads professional development across campus. Catherine is a Kentucky Colonel, a commission bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky for recognition of accomplishments and outstanding service to community, state, and nation. She is also certified in life coaching.
