High Demand Religion teaches conflicting things about money. Are we "blessed" with money as a result of righteous living or is money the root of all evil? One way or another we are taught that our worthiness is somehow connected to how much or how little we have.

Leaving a High Demand is a very painful loss. Not only are we losing the spiritual framework upon which we've built our lives, but there is also a loss of community, family and friends. Studies show that survivors of trauma benefit greatly from discussing their pain. Yet survivors of religious trauma are labeled apostates and shamed into silence. The #lds church paints such a toxic picture of apostates that when members find themselves on their way out, they're afraid to speak. Their family, friends, and community silence them. This shaming practice isolates "apostates" and keeps them from processing their religious trauma.

Jayenna left the Mormon church 15 years ago. Cat left 25 years ago. It has taken them both decades to break this conditioning and speak against these abusive practices.

In Exodus, the fifth commandment tells us to "Honor thy father and thy Mother." If you were raised #christian then you were taught this as God's word. But what if you're also part of the disporportionately high group of Christians that grew up in an abusive home? Should you 'honor' abusive caregivers or defy God's commandment?

Jayenna and Cat discuss this issue as it pertains to their personal lives and experiences in the hope it will help others.
