This monthly podcast brings you the latest news, upcoming projects and issues facing the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council area. You’ll also hear about events and meet people who do a lot their community. The Clare Valley Podcast aims to be informative, relevant and entertaining, by interviewing not just Council representatives but members of the entire community. The podcast is hosted and produced by Annabelle Homer, a former ABC broadcast journalist and a Clare Valley local. The theme music has been produced by Solo Practice and local rural GP, Gerry Considine.

Unprecedented frost events hit paddocks across the Mid North of South Australia
Farmers across most of the state have been dealt with a double slap to the face this growing season with dry weather and now severe frosts decimating wheat, barley and lentil crops.

The Clare and Gilbert Valleys is one region that’s been hit hard with some producers stating it’s the worst dry season in 110 years, doubled with severe frosts of -7 degrees.

The frosts have also affected grape growing regions across the state, the Barossa reporting 30% damage, and the Clare valley reporting 15% affect to vineyards, however it's not as widespread as last year.

In October 2023, Primary Industries and Regions reported 40% of the regions vineyards were impacted by frost.

So far this year, the Polish Hill River Valley region has been hit the hardest.

Cecilia is originally from Taiwan and has been in the new role for 2.5 years. She explains her role and why Council wants to encapsulate and preserve the area's history.

SALA Artist Profile: Wendy Pfeiffer, Snowtown
Staying with culture, recently the region's artists showcased their work as part of the SALA or South Australian Living Arts Festival celebrating the thriving visual arts community across the state. Galleries, community centres and town halls were adorned with a rich tapestry of all types of visual arts. Wendy Pfeiffer was one such artist, who has a great deal of knowledge in landscapes and animal portraits with 60 years of oils, graphite and coloured pencil pieces in her portfolio. She is also passionate about mentoring up and coming artists and pushing the boundaries in the art world.

How often do you visit your local library? Navigating the world of being a debut novelist - Mark McAvaney
Have you ever wanted to write your own novel but don’t know how to start? Also, how do you the navigate the publishing world? Mark McAveney is a new Australian author, who grew up in the Clare Valley, who now lives in London and has just published his first book - For Everything a Time . This interview isn’t about the book - it’s all about writing the book, the process, the constant editing and back and forth with publishers. He was recently in Clare as part of his Australian book tour. Enjoy this chat with Mark McAveney who is still coming to terms with his celebrity status.

Council Employee Profile:

Overseeing all the works and infrastructure in the Clare and Gilbert Valleys region is not an easy feat. Dealing with community requests for footpath and road upgrades, managing work orders and meeting with contractors and keeping it all to budget is just a few of the responsibilities of the council work and infrastructure team headed up the director Amy Neubauer.
As its budget time, I squeezed in a brief meeting with Amy to find out more about her and her role within Council, a role she’s held for the last year and a half.

Back to Tarlee Disco featuring DJ legend Sparks Disco "Tony Clarke"

Who can remember going to discos during the 70’s, 80’s and even the 90’s? They’re few and far between now, but the community of Tarlee is about to change that as they’re bringing theirs back on April 20th.

Around 300 people are converging on the lower north town to revive the atmosphere that once filled the Tarlee Institute to help raise funds for Tarlee’s Inclusive Playground Project. Heading up the entertainment is the Barossa Aussie Rock cover band, The Barking Ants and DJ legend, the front man of Spark’s Disco, Tony Clarke, a man who has been entertaining crowds on the dance floor for 46 years.

The farmer from Tarlee, is considered an absolute icon, giving back to communities near and far, helping with their fundraising efforts by providing the legendary beats for their event. In this episode, we'll be skipping down memory lane with Tony about the good old disco days.

Tourism Accomodation Shortage

In this episode we delve further into the tourism accommodation shortage in the Clare Valley.
In previous episodes we’ve highlighted the ongoing long term housing shortage where people are struggling to find rentals across the Clare and Gilbert Valleys. Last month, in particular, we reported how this shortage is now branching into tourism accommodation with a number of Air BNB’s pulling out of the tourism market and offering to long term renters. This is partly due to a significant worker infiltration from major projects such as the Goyder Windfarm and Battery project at Blyth. With less tourism accommodation available for tourists, what flow on effect is that having on the local tourism market?

Riverton Christmas Pageant

The community of Riverton converged on the streets of the town for the annual Christmas pageant. Traditionally Riverton celebrates this time of year with a Xmas carnival on the town’s oval, but COVID restrictions forced them to change direction and introduce a pageant that travelled through the back streets of Riverton so residents could sit in their front yards and not miss out on Christmas festivities. Such a great idea! Fast forward to 2023, this sill happens with the 20 odd floats finishing up at Sholz Park where the party continues.

There were clowns on bikes, elves handing out honey biscuits, superheroes on back of utes, a santa travelling in a vintage car, balloons were popping, water bombs were thrown, kids were squealing, music playing, sirens blaring – the streets of Riverton sure did come alive!

The Clare Valley Wine and Grape Association is offering businesses and and not-for- profit community groups an opportunity to host their own event at the 2024 Clare Gourmet Week as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations. This has been made possible through hallmark funding of $20 thousand issued by the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council. Greater SA - Abbie Tiller and Melissa Smith

Have you seen all the social media around Greater SA. It’s a modern media platform that been created by two local Balaklava lasses to keep regional people connected to local news and regional stories that matter.
With many regional local papers either closing or merging to make bigger regional publications, those local stories are harder to come by…but that’s where Greater SA steps in.
While many media outlets have their own online presence, the difference with this one is, it features stories from right across the state; not just the Mid North, or the Southeast, or the Riverland and Mallee but from every corner of the state.

They are only three months into this new business venture and their website is overflowing with content.

Abbie Tiller and Melissa Smith are the co-creators of Greater SA. They are super passionate about regional content, regional communities and covering those stories that don’t see the light of day on mainstream media.

**Council Profile: Environmental Health Officer, Sam KC

The Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council** is a significant employer in the district. Did you know there are over 68 people working for council with 57 of them being full time equivalent? Rates that fund council employee salaries nearly all go back into the Clare and Gilbert Valleys economy.

A few episodes ago you met Sara Zuromski, this month you'll get to know Sam KC, the Council’s Environmental Health Officer. This bloke deals with a variety of areas such as waste water treatment, mosquito trapping to ward off Japanese Encephalitis and health inspections at our local businesses.

Sam is originally from Nepal and has been living and working in the Clare Valley for a year. He’s been confronted with tasks he’s never done before but enjoys tackling the challenges the role brings. And though it’s far from Nepal, the Valley reminds him a lot of home.

Approximately 5000 people from around the region and beyond converged on Auburn’s Frenchfest this month. It’s the second time it’s been run, a biennial event bringing the beautiful village of Auburn to life to celebrate all things French.

Auburn is an historic town, known as the gateway to the Clare Valley and the home to CJ Dennis… but why is there a Frenchfest in Auburn, as its origins are not French.

We All Need SpaceThe road toll has increased across every state and territory in the last 12 months. There were 196 lives lost in Australia as a result of road crashes involving trucks and cars and around 70% of these serious incidents the light vehicle driver was at fault. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has launched campaign to educate all road users on how to share the roads safely with trucks. It’s called 'We All Need Space' giving trucks the space they need to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely.

Clare Valley Model Engineers

What is it about miniature trains that draws crowds from near and far? Whatever it is, kudos goes to The Clare Valley Model Engineers and their miniature trains, as they’ve turned their venture into a major tourist attraction over the last 26 years.

The club was formed in 1998 and they started doing public rides the following year. Last year they recorded over 11 thousand rides – a record year and this year is set to be even bigger. Club President Dean Manderson and long time volunteer David Lloyd reveal all about the club's history and why it's so successful.

If you’re interested in being part of the Clare Valley Model Engineers, they have working bees on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Housing and Land report

It’s no secret there are no rentals available in the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, and if there are, the waiting list is quite significant. There are also very few houses to buy and not much land to develop. Earlier this year the State Government launched its own plan to resolve the housing crisis across South Australia. It's implementing the Office for Regional Housing created with Renewal SA to identify the housing challenges and opportunities in the region and a Key Worker Housing Scheme to help regions that have growth, but nowhere to house workers.

The Clare and Gilbert Valley Council did their own housing report identifying key issues and came up with their own outcomes that need to be addressed.

Crowds peak pre-covid levels at 2023 Clare Valley SCA Gourmet Week

The Clare Valley has been heaving over the past week with all the music, food and wine celebrations for Clare Gourmet Week. Around 8000 people attend Clare Valley Gourmet Festival weekend with some wineries reporting crowd numbers back to pre-covid levels.

I decided to join in the festivities and hit Eldredge Vineyards for its family fun day. Let’s just say everyone was in fine wine spirits and loving the vibe that the Clare Valley Gourmet event brings every year.

Cooking for the Queen MotherThe 'Breathe It In' Gourmet Week is in its 3rd year, but not all of the events involve wine.

The Curly Goose along with Sawmill Gin offered people an unique experience of a Devonshire G &T – homemade scones served with jam and treats accompanied with tea, coffee or Clare Valley Gins and Cocktails in fine bone China.

Sophie Whitehead is the mistress of all thing’s food, and her husband David is the Gin Distiller. While on a caravanning holiday around Australia they both arrived in the Clare Valley and spontaneously bought the Curly Goose and transformed it into a Gin space.

A totally different line of work for David who once was an Executive with Australia Post, and a more subdued approach for Sophie who cheffed for the rich and famous on super yachts and in Sydney mansions.

Sophie, who’s originally from the UK started out in hospitality working for the Queen Mother at Clarence House, she wanted to channel that experience into their first Gourmet event.

SA Autumn Garden Festival
Thousands of people flocked through the gates of the Clare Showgrounds to attend the very successful SA Autumn Garden Festival, the largest of its kind in the state. There were 65 stall holders ranging from plant and garden stalls and handicrafts, children’s craft corner, garden themed stilt walkers, food and drink and a brilliant lineup of gardening experts, one being the very popular garden gnome Costa, the host of Gardening Australia. In this story you'll hear all the buzz and excitement from the event from Mid North locals, Costa Georgiadis, Rebecca Sullivan and event coordinator Paulie Calaby.

Guidelines to reduce smoke taint on winegrapes A new set of guidelines have been developed to help SA grain and wine grape growers manage smoke from broadacre stubbles to reduce the impact of smoke taint on winegrapes. The Broadacre Burn-Off Smoke Management Guidelines was launched in March after consultation with PIRSA, the state’s wine and grain industry and CFS representatives. These guidelines show a unified approach which will strengthen communication lines between the two industries. Anna Baum is a broadacre farmer from Auburn and also executive officer of the Clare Valley Wine and Grape Association and welcomes the new guidelines. She says smoke taint has been an ongoing issue for the wine industry for many years and hopes these new set of guidelines will make both parties more aware of their responsibilities.

Gather Together:
Centenary Park in Auburn was a hive of activity at the end of March as school groups, Ngadjuri youth and people from different cultures and backgrounds came together to join in on a Ngadjuri Led Inclusive Youth Cultural Event. It was about teaching youth about the Ngadjuri culture and identity, so they can pass on to future generations. Allow young people to connect to land, family, ceremony, and language and unite with other children and young people in particular those that are underprivileged. This story features Ngadjuri youth, children from Auburn Primary and St Joseph's Clare, Sarah Cheesmur from Employment Directions and Angelina Harradine from Ngadjuri country.

The Broadacre Burn-Off Smoke Management Guidelines

1). Update on news from council headquarters with CEO, Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council Dr Helen Macdonald:

Newly elected councilor Tania Furler has asked for a leave of absence from council meetings, however since this request, the SA Electoral Commission has advised the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council that Ms Furler is no longer an elected member as she failed to lodge a disclosure return.
The Clare Flying group has approached council seeking funding for 2 helipads at the Clare Aerodrome. The group say it will provide sustainable landing pads for the CFS and Medstar helicopters who are using the aerodrome more frequently due to the inadequate nature of the hospital heilpad. The group is in the process of applying for a Department of Infrastructure and Transport grant of $100,000, however there is a shortfall of around $95,000. So should council foot the bill?
A report has been complete detailing three options for improving the use of the stage at the Clare Town Hall.

2) Planning and Development in the Clare and Gilbert Valley's region
Have you got plans to build a new carport, or a shed perhaps or maybe start a new tourism development? How much do you know about getting development approval?Or maybe someone’s building a shed next door that’s blocking your view and you’re not happy about – what right do you have to dispute it? The current state planning legislation is very pro-development so it’s very difficult to block a development. Andrew Christiansen, the Council’s Director of Development and Community talks about the process and who has the power to approve applications and where does the public sit on disputes.

3). Push to improve the condition of the Clare Hospital helipad
There are claims that the medstar helicopters are bypassing the Clare Hospital and landing at the Clare Aerodrome because the hospital’s helipad is unsafe. High trees and dust issues are some of the factors deeming the landing area unsuitable. This has been an issue for a few months and the Clare Flying Group are concerned if this becomes a long term plan, the current infrastructure won’t be able to maintain the frequent helicopter landings. Gerry Considine is a local Clare Valley GP and pilot and says the state government needs to step up to ensure there's a suitable helicopter retrieval service in the valley.

However, those days have been limited so far this summer. So how do these aquatic centres cope financially with these cooler conditions and ongoing maintenance works?

The unveiling of the Monica McInerney sculptureA new sculpture was unveiled recently on the Riesling Trail honouring the best-selling author Monica McInerney. Monica hails from Clare and grew up in the Station Masters house adjacent to where the sculpture is unveiled, a sculpture depicting her as a 10 year old girl, sitting on the roof of her house, lost in a book. Monica has written 14 published books with many featuring elements of the Clare Valley.
The project was driven by the Riesling Trail Management Committee and funded by the Waterloo Wind Farm, Clare and District Lions Club, the Middle Pub Clubs Bingo nights, the Augeys and other financial supporters.
The creative genius behind the sculpture is local Clare Valley Artisan Paul Leditschke. Paul specialises in creating bespoke pieces – on off designs – so if you want something different or quirky created, he’s your guy.
This story features: Monica McInerney, Sue Wurst and Paul LeditschkeThe Hill Shed Community Garden, Clare Valley Community Kitchen, Jingles Garden There are moves to open up the trade shed and community garden in Clare.
The large trade shed was a successful community initiative for 9 years before it was shut down in 2019 when grant funding wasn’t renewed. It was a big loss to the community and to the youth of Clare as it was accessed by a lot high school students who were keen to learn a trade. So members of the Clare Community are making moves to open the shed and garden again and rebranding it as the The Hill Shed Community Garden.

In the past, the Clare District Lions Club play an integral part in the Shed, where members have been mentors for the high school students. They’ve now been asked by the Hill Shed Community Garden to undertake a new project which will give people in need, access to a hot shower.

From the garden to the plate, in September Julie Grover started the Clare Valley Community Kitchen, providing people with a space to meet and socialise while offering home cooked lunches every fortnight. Through generous support from Council, local businesses and community volunteers, the kitchen is growing success. She has big plans to expand the community kitchen to include local schools and restaurants. We'll also head to Riverton to check out another community garden, Jingles Garden.

The annual Clare Valley Wine Show was held recently with more than 200 people attending.

It’s deemed a highlight on the calendar of those in the wine industry, a chance to catch up, wine and dine, and compete for the bragging rights of the coveted trophies.

This year’s show attracted 43 exhibitors, with 469 entries across 23 classes. A total of 302 medals were awarded, including 52 gold.

Community Peak Bodies - Watervale and Mintaro.

As you enter the town of Watervale from the north, you’d be hard pressed not to see the million-dollar development ‘The Vale’, a community building overlooking the tennis courts and t5he iconic Watervale Oval.

This project was 12 years in the making and it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the ongoing commitment and perseverance of the Watervale Community Association. This is just one example of what one peak body can achieve. You'll hear from Greg Bryksy, chair of the Watervale Community Association who tells the story behind 'The Vale' and the blood sweat and tears that went into making it happen. You'll also get an insight from Yvonne Cloke from the Mintaro Progress Association about the investment into their local Institute but they're facing some challenges with an ageing demographic.

Another concern facing the Mintaro Progress Association is whether to take over the lease of Mortlock Park. Council is asking communities to take on ownership of council buildings and leasing council land in a move to free up funds for council. Yvonne says the financial responsibility is too great, but if they don't take over the lease they'll miss out on government funding for upgrades.

Lifeline Connect - Clare

In the heart of Clare, there is a place where people can go to who are experiencing social, financial or mental health challenges. This place is called Lifeline Connect.
They provide a free counselling service for anyone aged 12 and above. Lorna Woodward, regional coordinator of Regional Connect Centres is an experienced social worker and has had a lot of experience in child protection. She says the Clare Centre began a 16 months ago and is the only one of its kind in regional South Australia, with another in Broken Hill.
Lifeline Connect is staffed with three counsellors ( Lorna is one of them), and nine volunteers. Volunteers are trained in 'Reach' which is a Suicide Intervention and Prevention Program as well as accidental counselling which gives them the skills to listen effectively and to respond to people who are distressed or in crisis. Lorna says they're always on the lookout for volunteers.

Dwayne Menzies volunteers twice a week and is the only male volunteer. He had a workplace accident 20 years ago deeming him unable to work in any capacity plus he’s had a lived experience. He wants to help others on their mental health journey particularly men. You will also hear from volunteer Hilary Adlam, who is a former social worker and worked in community health for many years in the mid north of South Australia.

COMMUNITY PEAK BODIES
We'll deep dive into the role and importance of community peak bodies. Do you ever wonder, who was behind the idea of putting new bike racks on the main street? Who fundraised and got grant funding to do up the local hall or institute? Who pushed for more rainwater tanks at the local oval? This is just a handful of examples of what peak bodies have achieved to progress a town and boost community morale and tourism. There are 13 peak bodies in the Clare and Gilbert Valley’s Council area, so there’s one in every town but Clare. Each peak body receives $6000 from Council each year to assist them in their projects and that funding has just been increased in the latest budget.

Adrian Nourse is the vice chair of the Saddleworth District Community Association and has been involved with the local peak body for 10 years. He’s passionate about his community in particular Bee and Hill Park, which was developed in the same spot where the town’s local shop once stood before it tragically burnt to the ground six years ago.
You will also hear from Andrew Christiansen, the Council’s Director of Development and Community and Judy Giles, Council’s Community Development Coordinator.

**HIDDEN COMMUNITY GEM: ROBERT 'ALFIE' HANNAFORD

Robert ‘Alfie’ Hannaford** is a self taught realist artist noted for his drawings, paintings, portraits and sculptures. Primarily known as a portrait artist, with subjects including Joan Sutherland, Donald Bradman, Paul Keating and Bob Hawke, he also produces landscapes, still-life and nudes.

Alfie has lived an extremely full life, from his humble beginnings growing up on a farm near Riverton, to then becoming a cartoonist with the Advertiser and then a professional artist at 20. He’s travelled and worked in India, Europe and Africa.

Alfie now resides outside Riverton where he transformed a disused farmhouse and outbuildings into a dwelling and a studio. In 2007, he bought the old garage in Riverton and converted into the Riverton Light Gallery where he and his wife artist, Alison Mitchell, showcase their artworks.

This interview is a snapshot of Alfie’s life, you’ll hear about his childhood, how he came to be painting Don Bradman and conversing at Windsor Castle with the Queen. You’ll also hear of his challenges, in particular, being diagnosed with aggressive tongue cancer which has also affected his speech.

The Women's Shed - ClareYou may have heard of the Men Shed movement but what about the Women's shed.

Two 4th year occupational therapy students from Uni SA are working on implementing a Women’s shed in Clare.

Over the last couple of months, they’ve been seeking community interest to see if there is a need for a space for women to learn certain skills of choice.

So far the response has been overwhelming with many people saying they want a space to learn practical skills like home maintenance, fixing a tyre, changing the oil; those skills that are stereotypically left for men.

You'll hear from Phuong Nguyen and Georgia Zeitz about the project and how you can get involved.

There have been many former OT students that have done their placements in Clare that have started successful projects such as the Lions Furniture Shed and the Bikes and Brekkie Initiative, hopefully the women’s shed will be added to this list of successful initiatives.

Mid North Community Passenger Network:Are you travelling to the city often for medical appointments and the whole experience stresses you out? The traffic, the parking?

Did you know there is a transport service in Clare that will drive you down to Adelaide or to other mid north centres for your appointments at a very affordable rate.

It’s called the Mid North Community Passenger Network. It's not new, it’s been around for 20 years. It’s a very professional outfit, with 54 volunteer drivers and 8 vehicles helping over 1000 clients across numerous Mid North council districts.

The Network’s coordinator Damien Graham has been at the helm for 15 years and runs a very tight ship. Though the network is for all people needing transport to medical appointments, it can also be used for social inclusion purposes, such as weddings, funerals christenings and other social engagements

You'll also hear from passenger Margaret Boud and volunteer driver Patricia Edwards.

2. An exciting development for the community of Auburn, after 4 years of planning, a very impressive giant sculpture has been erected at the entrance of the township. A very generous resident bequeathed $64, 000 to the town to build a gateway statement on the southern entrance to the town! It sure does make a statement! Go and check it out!!
3. What does council do in regards to recycling and what happens to all the materials once they leave the local waste transfer station? Also disposable face masks. People still aren’t doing the right thing and cutting the ear loops before they dispose in the bins. They’re a hazard to wildlife!

In this episode, you'll hear an update from Helen Macdonald, the Chief Executive of the Clare and Gilbert Valley Council about major road projects in the council area and local Councillors are calling for everyone who enters the Council chambers to be COVID double vaccinated.

Also bushfire preparation and what regulations are in place to make sure landowners have mowed and cleaned up their blocks ahead of the bushfire season.
This bushfire season is going to be a testing one as fuel loads are the highest in years, following a wet winter and spring. You'll hear what the Council's responsibilities are to ensure the community is prepared this summer. We're joined by Andrew Christiansen, the Director of Development and Community at the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, and Boyd Kench and Mick Tobin , Compliance Officers, CGVC.

Also, without a doubt, all of us have something lying around the house that’s broken. A toaster, a crock pot, maybe a hole in piece of clothing? More than likely, that item would sit at home and gather dust, or you'd throw it out. Am I right?
We live in such a wasteful society that many of us, don’t have the simple skills to fix things anymore. That’s where the Repair Café comes in. The Clare Library Repair Café was launched in the Town Hall in November, where people take in their damaged or broken items to be fixed by a group of willing volunteers.
We head along to open day and catch up with Heather Lymburn, The Clare Library Manager and Coordinator of the Clare Repair Café; Mary Clark, a volunteer; Michelle Edmondson, a customer and Susan Cunningham, Climate Connect Midnorth.
It’s a monthly event. The next one will be on December 4th at 4:30- 7pm running alongside the Village Twilight Market on the main street of Clare.
