Simon has been in and out of running his whole life. He was always the kid who got bored walking so ran instead, if that’s from the bus to home after school, to competing in track and cross country.

Then in 2019 Simon was diagnosed with Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis, a condition that his mother has also lived with for 40 years, and since then he has leaned into words that she received during her diagnosis – ‘if you planned to climb Everest, do it sooner rather than later’.

Simon has used this sentence and his diagnosis as inspiration to challenge the norm against MS. He now runs to raise money and awareness for MS, completing numerous marathons, 50k’s and the 100k Jurassic Coast, with his eyes now set on an event of his own... the Cornish Coastal Path, 480km, 18000m vert, 7 days, 7 ultras, 7 teams and Simon himself.

Paving the way for a communityTasha is the founder of Black Girls Do Run UK

In 2019 to celebrate 20 years of running, she decided to give back to the sport she loves and created Black Girls Do Run UK; a community to inspire, encourage and motivate regular black women to run.

The group was founded based on her experiences throughout her years of running and noticing that there was a lack of diversity in races and running in general. Therefore she decided to try and do something about it. The initial aim of the group was to increase visibility of regular black women running and to meet up at races and it has grown into an amazing community.

Alongside this she wants to take on her first ultra-race, cycle around the Isle of Wight and keep running fun!

iMEDicareStress incontinence can affect anyone, no matter how strong and fit we are. And it’s very common for runners to neglect pelvic floor muscles, which are just what we need to strengthen to prevent those leaks in the first place.

Because of the high impact nature of running, stress incontinence is actually extremely prevalent in runners.

Efemia is a vaginal mid-urethral support pessary that can be used with running or exercising to prevent urinary leakage with 80% plus efficacy by gently lifting the urethra from the inside and creating a partial compression effect precisely at the same point that a urethral sling might be applied surgically.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast Dom speaks to Darren EdwardsDarren Edwards is a record-breaking Disabled Adventurer, Author, and Motivational Speaker.

Darren’s life was drastically altered in the summer of 2016 when a near-fatal climbing accident left him permanently paralysed from the chest down. Refusing to let his life be defined by his heart-breaking injury and subsequent medical prognosis, he has battled back with determination, grit, and resilience to achieve things many thought impossible for an individual with a high-level Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).

Darren’s exploits since that life-changing moment have seen him lead a team of daring injured and wounded veterans who became the first team to kayak from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, row across the world’s busiest shipping lane of the English Channel, and in 2023, he became the first person with a disability to complete 7 marathons in 7 days across 7 continents – better known as the ‘World Marathon Challenge’. In addition to these physical and mental battles, he has raised over £200,000 for charity and is an established and professional Motivational Speaker.

On this episode of the Outside & Active Podcast Darren talks through his life-altering incident, a hilarious story which involved buying a Kayak just months after his injury, and some of the incredible challenges he has undertaken.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast Dom speaks to Jay CourtneyJay a writer who takes inspiration from being in the wild, whether it is sitting in her garden pond or visiting remote places in the North Atlantic. Five years ago after a period of ill-health Jay decided to retire from her career and retirement came as a shock to her.

Jay quickly realised that she did not know how to do this part of her life. She experimented with all sorts of activities from ‘Drawing for the Terrified’, to Silver Swans ballet (not pretty), to ‘Wild Writing’. Writing emerged as her ‘thing’ and so studied for an MA in Travel and Nature Writing at Bath Spa University.

Our third act in life is the one where we weave together an understanding of our lives and accept our true selves. Many women have got in touch with Jay to tell her their ‘Juicy Crones’ adventures.

In this episode of the podcast Jay opens our eyes to the often tabooed topic of the menopause and how it should be seen as a lease of life rather than something to be petrified of.

In this special bonus episode of the Outside & Active Podcast Dom speaks to Suzi Shaw.Singer, actress and TV personality Suzanne Shaw became a member of the chart- topping band ‘Hear’say’ in 2001, selling over 1.5 million records and holding a world record for the fastest selling non-charitable single.

From the age of 19, Suzanne has lived under the scrutiny of
the media, which in-turn played a big part in her 19-year battle with her mental health. After years of unhealthy living and anti-depressants, Suzanne had finally had enough of living this way and went on a mission to find her ‘happy’ again.

At the start of 2020, Suzanne completely changed her lifestyle – quitting alcohol, changing her diet to plant-based, taking up running and studying nutrition, mindfulness and coaching.

Since then, Suzanne has thrived within the wellness industry and made quite the name for herself in the running community. In May 2020, she ran for 19 hours, covering 60 miles, all to raise awareness for the 19 people who take their own lives every day in the UK and raising money for the suicide prevention charity, ‘Samaritans’.

In this special bonus episode of the Outside & Active Podcast, Suzi Shaw is announcing her previously secret upcoming project. A challenge she says is the 'hardest thing she will probably ever do'

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast Dom is joined by Gary RobbinsGary Robbins has been one of Canada’s top ultra-marathon distance runners for the past 15 years. He’s attained many podiums, course records, and “fastest known times” over the years, including his still standing course record at the HURT Hawaii 100 miler, where he’s been the course record holder for over a decade, running the two fastest times in the history of the race.

He is perhaps best known however for his three non-finishes of the world’s toughest footrace, The Barkley Marathons. A documentary titled “Where Dreams Go To Die” captured his journey and has been viewed online over 2.5 million times.

Gary calls Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada home, along with his wife, son, dog and two cats. While struggling with a lack of races throughout the pandemic he still managed to run two 100 mile efforts. His first was charity run on a treadmill in his garage while raising money for British Columbia Search and Rescue organisations, and his second was a route he dreamt up from his front door that had over 30,000 feet of vert up and over six local mountains.

Gary is a race director and running coach by trade, and his events series, “Coast Mountain Trail Running” has donated over $350,000 back to local search and rescue and trails organisations over the years.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast Dom is joined by Helen GloverHelen Glover is a product of the GB Rowing Team Start Programme, the ground-breaking talent identification and development initiative supported by National Lottery funding. Glover only took up rowing in 2008 and won a historic gold medal at the Olympic Games in London just four years later.

Her outstanding women’s pair partnership with Heather Stanning thrived under the guidance of coach Robin Williams and they became the first British female rowers to successfully defend an Olympic title when they won gold at Rio 2016.

That completed a perfect Olympiad for Glover in the pair – she won every race she competed in and claimed a hat-trick of world titles, one with Polly Swann and two with Stanning.

After stepping away from rowing to get married and have three children, Helen returned to the team in 2021 with the goal of being the first mother to compete for the GB Rowing Team.

Helen is also working with Cotswold Outdoor to bring awareness towards the effect we are having on the outdoor and how we each have a part to play. In the episode we talk through the images on the Cotswold Website (cotswoldoutdoor.com/news.html) which show us what our favourite outdoor locations will look like if we don’t take action against climate change now.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast Dom is joined by Dan StanleyDan Stanley is an expert in human development and performance.

Throughout his career, he has coached hundreds of men to become better, more purposeful, more productive, more courageous and higher performing versions of themselves. He has a proven record of enabling other men to succeed in life by helping them to achieve their goals, whilst living balanced lives and experiencing positive wellbeing.

He is an authentic man, a father of two, a loving husband, a son and confidant to many. He is a retired award-winning senior army commando, a key decision maker and contributor in a multi-million pound service business, the former owner of a successful fitness company, and until recently, the national champion in indoor rowing across multiple distances.

After the birth of his first child, he experienced a mid-life crisis. He did the typical guy thing, he buried himself in work and tried his best to suppress what he was feeling.

It didn’t work. He nearly lost everything that was dear to him, including his marriage.

He felt lost, confused and directionless. He was unsure of his purpose and didn’t understand his drivers. His life was out of alignment, he lacked balance and felt like a passenger in his own life.

He found he had many questions that he couldn’t answer. He was forced to learn who he truly was, where his life was going (with or without him) and to accept his failings as a man.

He discovered the answers to these questions by embarking on a journey of introspection, growth and action. His life-changing journey to surpass good and become better proved to be turbulent but transformative. He read books, listened to podcasts, attended retreats and participated in numerous courses around the world.

He has grown and developed into the man he is today because he chose to become a better, more courageous, more loving, more caring, more authentic, more aware and more aligned man.

In this episode we talk through the idea of masculinity and how that has evolved through the decades to where we are now. Dan highlights the 5 key challenges of masculinity and how men, at any age, can look to battle these challenges.

You can learn more about Dan and his amazing book, Rethinking Masculinity, by heading to his website - Better Men.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dom is joined by Bruce FordyceBruce Fordyce is the most well-known runner in South Africa, having won that country's internationally famous Comrades Marathon (54 miles) eight years in a row and nine times overall.

During that period, Fordyce could not compete internationally, due to South Africa's apartheid policies--which he actively campaigned against. Eventually, running and track and field were among the first sports to welcome participation by black South Africans.

Bruce is most proud of his 9 Comrades Marathons wins, in which he broke the course record 5 times.

In 2011, Park Run was born into South African communities thanks to Bruce Fordyce getting involved. He started Park Run in South Africa with the first event being held in Delta Park, Johannesburg. The first event was attended by 26 people and from there, the event has simply flourished.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dom is joined by Hannah BeechamHannah was inspired to start RED January after witnessing the transformative effect that regular physical activity had on her Mum, as she recovered from a period of severe depression.

By providing a free event for all fitness abilities, Hannah believed she could encourage people like her Mum to support their mental health by building movement into their daily lives. And with the combination of a physical activity challenge, plus the support of a wider online community, Hannah aimed to create an initiative that not only helped people for one month of the year, but throughout their lives.

January seemed like the perfect month for the initiative, providing an opportunity to kick-start the year in a positive way. It’s a time when many of us are setting new goals, but are low on funds and motivation, with less social occasions to keep us connected. RED is an empowering colour for dark times, that could inspire those taking part to ‘move every day, to beat the winter blues away.’

Since starting RED January in 2016, Hannah is proud to be a part of a community that’s growing in support and strength year-on-year, and is excited to see where RED January could take you.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dom speaks to Mia BrookesMia has been snowboarding since she was eighteen months old, travelling around Europe in the family motorhome. Mia met the GB Snowsport Freestyle coaches while out in Laax when she was ten years old and later that year was selected to the team’s development squad. During the following seasons Mia continued to train with GB Snowsport Freestyle coaches in Laax, Livigno and Hintertux and enjoyed competing in the World Rookie Tour comps.

In her senior debut at the Europa Cup slopestyle in Corvatsch, Switzerland in December 2020 Mia exploded onto the senior scene grabbing a spot on the podium, placing second.

Even though she’s merely a teenager, Mia Brookes already rides with the style and trick selection of a seasoned vet. From the age of 10 onward, she was supported by Great Britain Snowsport Freestyle coaches and began competing in World Rookie Tour comps. Today, the young British ripper is just as comfortable tweaking bio airs and rotations as she is getting tech on rails and ledges. With her skate-inspired flow and decked out in signature camo snow gear, Mia has been hitting the world’s best snow parks and learning new tricks along the way for the past seasons.

The biggest sponsors have already signed her across boards, bindings, goggles, and boots. In early 2022, Mia became a household name by winning the Junior World Championships in Big Air and placing second in Slopestyle. At age 15! The BBC already heralds her as a prospect for the 2026 Olympics, but she’s taking it one step at a time: We can’t wait until Mia is old enough to compete at World Cup events and see what she’ll do next!

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dom is joined by Jamie Barrow Jamie Barrow is the world's Fastest snowboarder. In 2013 a serious accident during a snowboard cross competition made him have to drop out of the British team and left Jamie with a bad back injury. Despite doctors telling him he had to give up snowboarding, he was determined to not only snowboard again but to push himself as far as he could. This is when Jamie decided to start doing speed records. Since then he has broken many snowboard records and embarked on a bunch of interesting projects. Jamie is always looking for new and exciting projects so that he can continue to enjoy snowboarding despite his injury.

Jamie's aim is to just enjoy himself snowboarding despite his injury and work on projects that he is passionate about that push him and others to do the same.

He started snowboarding at the age of 8 and fell in love with it straight away. Going through school, Jamie struggled quite a lot being Dyslexic and never thought he would achieve anything. Snowboarding was the opportunity for Jamie to get away and just enjoy himself. He didn't really have a plan to take it further it was just something he really enjoyed doing.

After a couple seasons of competing in senior level competitions Jamie was still not getting the results he wanted. Then During a competition he had a very bad accident where he was knocked out and ended up slipping a disc in my neck. He got taken to the hospital and after a lot of scans the doctor finally came in to give him news. Jamie could tell straight away from his face that this was not going to be good news. He told Jamie that he had pretty much destroyed a disc in his lower back, it was crushed, slipped, torn, and dehydrated.

That accident set Jamie on the path he finds himself on today... the path of SPEED!

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dominic Brown is joined by Sally Gunnell Sally Gunnell OBE; the Essex Girl who captured the hearts of a nation. She remains the only woman ever to hold four major track titles concurrently – Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth. Sally’s rise to the pinnacle of her sport was hard won. She blew the chance to be World Champion in 1991, stormed back to win Olympic Gold in 1992 and defied incredible odds to become World Champion in 1993, setting a new World Record in the process. She contended with injuries, athletes that she saw as more naturally gifted and, a relatively modest support infrastructure compared to her peers.

Her success, by her own admission, was down to a firm grip over her own mind and a lot of very hard graft.

Sally’s injuries eventually forced her retirement from elite sport, but she continued to remain in the public eye, thanks to her TV career. She worked for the BBC through the late Nineties and early Noughties, covering athletics events from around the world.

Her passion for health and wellbeing was a key component of her athletics success. She took her knowledge and experience in to the printed word, writing four influential books on the subject.

Today, she mixes keynote speaking and running corporate wellbeing programmes. She is also a high-profile supporter of healthy and active family initiatives in the UK

In this episode of the podcast, we learn about Sally's grit and determination that took her from an active youngster to the most dominant female in her discipline. Sally also chats about her work since leaving professional athletics and her pure passion for health & wellbeing.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dom speaks to Micahel CoatesIn this weeks episode of the Outside & Active Podcast, we welcome former military man and endurance sport specialist, Michael Coates. Michael speaks through his love and hate relationship with endurance events, his history serving in the Military, and the importance of declassifying stigmas around mental health.

Michael joined the British Army aged 16, serving nearly 6 years with the Royal Engineers. During his service, Michael spent time in Iraq during the conflict at the beginning of 2003 and then again at the end of the year.

After returning to civilian life, Michael then spent a further 9 years in the Fire Service. His guests include Military Cross winners, athletes, partners of those who have served, high ranking commanders and 'normal' veterans who have gained extraordinary experiences. By declassifying stigmas and perceptions he wishes to open up issues around mental fitness and wellbeing, talk in depth around subjects such as post traumatic growth and delve into human development on a micro level.

Alongside all of this, he is also a serial endurance athlete, taking on gruelling challenges to push his body and mind to the limit. In this podcast we dive into the specifics of these challenges and find out he has such a love/hate relationship with them.

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dominic Brown speaks to Rob Pope

His name is Rob Pope, but you might know him as Forrest Gump. In 2018, Rob became the first person to answer one of the most asked questions in ultrarunning. “Could Forrest have actually survived his epic run”. Well, according to Rob, he could, after he himself ran over 15,600 miles in 422 days, crossing America almost five times and finishing at the same spot Forrest did in Monument Valley.

As such, it seemed appropriate that he next appeared at the sharp end of the field in the 2019 Marathon des Sables finishing as the highest placing Brit/Australian, despite developing pneumonitis on the long stage.

Since then he has taken his charity fundraising to almost £100,000 with major long distance runs between two of the UK’s highest summits - Snowdon and Scafell for the Stroke Association and making a pilgrimage called “The Long and Winding Road” from Liverpool to Glastonbury festival, running over 100km daily, for Oxfam.

Has the talk of running got you feeling competitive?

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast, Dominic Brown talks to Joshua Patterson.

Joshua has made a name for himself in the world of endurance running since leaving reality TV hit Made in Chelsea, completing several world-firsts while raising money for some amazing causes. Notably, Joshua became the first person to run a marathon in all 4 countries in the UK in 24 hours. He also completed two challenges over the lockdown around his garden patio including a 24 hour continuous run.

Starting with a couple of quick-fire questions, Dom then talks to Joshua about the change from reality TV to transitioning into being a “runner” and how his narrative to his followers has changed as he develops further into running.

What makes Joshua feel uncomfortable? Doing a challenge takes you to a place you don’t want to be. Just so in love with running. They also talk about where Josh gets his motivation and what an important role his daughter plays in that.

On this week’s episode of the Outside & Active Podcast, we talk to London Marathon nutritionist, Anita Bean.

At the time of recording, we were 18 weeks out for the marathon. Now with about 10 weeks to go, we talk to Anita about the different stages of training specifically around nutrition and diet on the lead up to a major event.

Not solely for marathon runners, we could all learn from Anita’s knowledge shared on what’s good and what’s not so good for us as you train for any type of physically demanding endurance event.

We break down the different stages of an event from what to eat (and what not to eat) pre-event, during the race and post event as well.

Pre-Event

Take an honest look at the amount of processed vs unprocessed foods in your diet and how you can minimize or limit the intake of these processed foods. Aim for a whole food diet and more plant-based foods for performance, energy levels and recovery whilst training.

We also talk about your gut – what’s good for your gut when you’re building up your longer runs. There isn’t a food you should or shouldn’t consumer, but consider simple means -ie no heavy spices that could upset you when on your long activity.

Whole food carbohydrates, something every athlete should be consuming as well as unsaturated fats in the form of nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil.

Race Day Morning

On the day of the event, take the London Marathon as an example, you should aim to have your pre-run breakfast about 3-4 hours before start time. Biggest tip here – stick to what you’re used to – don’t try something new in case that triggers unexpected symptoms. About 60 minute before you begin, just top up with a Soreen for example to top up your glycogen levels.

Start Gun

Start fueling about 40 minutes after the start and continue your plan through the race. Don’t leave it too late to fuel – once you get past the point of no return, it could be very difficult to keep down carbs, food etc., and you could have completely empty fuel stores and may not be able to finish.

Don’t forget, on the day the conditions may be completely different. You’re running a different pace, maybe too fast, you don’t feel like eating with the crowds cheering. The sun is shining, maybe you’re sweating more than you planned through your run, so you need to be adaptable and be aware that the circumstances could be very different.

After the finish

Most marathon runners find they’re not that hungry straight away. For a lot of people it’s easier to consume a recovery drink when you may not be feeling that hungry, but give yourself a little treat that’s tempting, tasty and a little reward when you finish. Get carbs back in and consider adding some proteins as well to help with recovery. It’s crucial to add fluid and rehydrate regardless of how well you stuck to your plan.

Find out more about Anita Bean

Head over to Anita Beans’ website, anitabean.co.uk where you can find info on her latest book, the Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition as well as her other books such as The Runners Cookbook, Vegan Runners Cookbook and more.

Winning her age group triathlon in 2019, Claire suffered a horrific accident, colliding with a tractor whilst on her bike. Airlifted to hospital and on initial assessment, they weren’t really sure what was next for Claire.

Paralysed from T5, so no sensation or movement from nearly half-way down her back and below a lot of people may have wondered how she could bounce back from this.

Claire had a goal that helped her through all the appointments, surgeries, consultations and sometimes even just getting up and getting dressed in the morning. She wanted to compete again. When talking to Claire you could see it in her eyes, the fire is there to race and we’re excited to watch Claire’s journey.

We talk to Claire about her journey from the accident through to rehab and how that progressed into more training and then racing again. We also talk about parathlete racing in triathlon and what that experience is like if you’re considering getting into parathletics.

We hope our conversation with Claire inspires you

Welcome to season four of the Outside & Active Podcast.

On this week’s episode we talk to Steve Cram and how running has affected and changed Steve both mentally and physically throughout his career as a runner, presenter and coach.

We also talk to Steve about the evolution of club running and races and traditional athletics clubs.

When Steve started club running there were no half marathons or marathons like we know today. Running wasn’t “casual” as it is now with the growth of mass participation events like parkrun or how there are more open and accessible running clubs around the country and world.

Switching things up slightly we then discuss the “I can” mentality and how your mind can make you do things that you physically thought may be impossible to ever achieve. Whether it’s your first five kilometre run or first 100 miler – there is something we could all learn from listening to Steve’s lived experiences.

Monty Python makes an appearance too - what did running ever do for us? Actually, an awful lot!

Our last guest for season three of the Outside & Active podcast rose to public fame when a picture circulated of her having a break during the UTMB mountain race. Nothing unusual about that you may think, but the picture of Sophie Power was taken whilst she was breastfeeding her three month old baby during the 106 mile race, after being denied a deferral to that years event.

After the race, Sophie started sharing her story on social media (@ultra_sophie) and campaigning for women in sport. She recently launched SheRaces.com, which is a set of guidelines for race event directors to help make races more equitable for women.

We talk to Sophie about running, family, adventure and the importance of making events open and accessible for all.

About She Races

“This campaign isn’t just about pregnancy deferrals. It’s about creating a better and more inclusive race experience overall – and that’s something that will ultimately benefit both men and women.”

Sabrina Pace-Humphreys PodcastThis week, Sabrina Pace-Humphreys talks to Dominic Brown about her background growing up and barriers of entry to the outdoors. They also talk about where the idea for the group Black Trail Runners came from and the positive impact running has had on her life.

What does running feel like for you?

It could be the positive effect of running for mental health. Or maybe the headspace that it gives you compounded by the endorphin rush that comes from something like running.

From her first 1km to incredible runs like the Marathon Des Sables, Sabrina asks herself, how far can you go? How far can she run? Just like her running, Sabrina wants to see how she can break the mould and open barriers to others in the black community, the next generation of trail runners to enable them to see they CAN do it, if they try.

Sabrina moved to the Cotswolds at age 4 and experienced rural racism through her young and teenage years. She grew up around people that didn’t look like here. Not the same hair, the same skin, nor did they experience the same racial trauma. It was people not understanding that they couldn’t touch or even burn her hair for example.

Fast forward a few years later and found herself asking where are people on the trails that look like me? So…she launched Black Trail Runners as she says, you can’t be what you can’t see.

Black Trail Runners is a group for black people and white allies that seeks to diversify the outdoors. IT seeks to engage, enthuse and inspire with black people to want to move through trail running in the outdoors.

Sabrina Pace Humphreys book – Black Sheep; A story of rural racism, identity and hope

Poignant and eye-opening, and exploring themes of trauma, identity, mental health and addiction, Black Sheep is a tale of triumph: of grit and determination, of hope over despair.

You can buy the book here.

Mario Rigby us a self-titled eco-explorer who completed a solo two year 12,000km voyage from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo in Egypt entirely by foot and kayak, called the Crossing Africa expedition (read more on Mario's website here).

We talk to Mario about his journey, wanting to do something so epic that it would radically change his life. No one map would cover his whole journey. Conflicts, war, roads being built - what could happen in one month to the next across the incredible countries he journeyed would prepare him for what lay ahead.

Running out of water with still many kilometers to go, Mario flashed back through his childhood, with a day and a half to go before the destination of his next checkpoint. Passing out just before sunset, a seagull flew over him and felt as though he was warped into the bird’s perspective, looking down on himself laid out on the beach. Knowing it was a hallucination, he suddenly felt this super connection as he emerged back into nature.

Find out more about Mario by following him on Instagram @mariorigby or his website mariorigby.com

What is an eco-explorer?

An eco-explorer, someone who attempts and completes sustainable expeditions. These are expeditions or adventures that impact future generations, opening up adventure to people around the world who may have not normally had access to these sorts of opportunities. In Mario’s own words, “you can only get everyone involved in the outdoors, when everyone has access to the outdoors.”

Coming from track 200 and 400m sprint and competed for Turks & Caicos islands, racing against Usain Bolt back in the day.

What an incredible human we were given the chance of talking to. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

What’s the most important thing Mario’s learned from one of his expeditions? Find out in our conversation with Mario. Listen here.

Have you been inspired by lots of the blockbuster style movies from the Dawn Wall to Touching the Void or even 14 Peaks on Netflix about climbing?

There's no doubt that climbing is a growing sport. Just a few decades ago, it was primarily the domain of mountaineers and hardcore adventurers. But today, climbing gyms can be found in cities across the globe, and the sport has been featured prominently in films and TV shows.

Steve McClure

On this week’s episode of the Outside & Active podcast we talk to climbing legend Steve McClure.

We start off talking about the way we travel, thinking about the footprint we leave behind on the environment especially in pursuit of time outdoors.

The “big trip abroad” was the main event. It was the big-ticket adventure ticket but the last few years have taught us that we can adventure so much closer to home and we talk about that with Steve in the latest episode of the Outside & Active podcast.

The UK is an inspiring place for adventure so if you need that “hit” there’s lots to explore.

Bringing climbing into the mix, we talk to Steve about:

  • How he started with rock climbing
  • How to get into climbing and bouldering
  • Being safe when climbing
  • How to get stronger for climbing and bouldering
  • How to identify where you could improve with your climbing
  • Introducing kids to climbing
  • Been climbing for a few years? Hear Steve’s top tips.

We also find out when Steve felt most alive out climbing!

If you’re interested in trying climbing or bouldering for the first time, check out the British Mountaineering Council website https://www.thebmc.co.uk/

Find out more about Climbing Legend Steve McClure

Steve McClure is one of the best rock-climbers in the world, having climbed the hardest sport route in the UK at 9b, numerous new routes at the grade of 9a and onsighted many at 8b+. However, despite being better known for his sport climbing achievements, you might also find him off on an adventure traditional climbing in Pembroke, multi-pitching in Morocco, or sleeping on a portaledge on a 1000m wall in Greenland. Having climbed for over 45 years, Steve has seen the sport change and grow, but also kept up with the pace, and now, even at 50, he remains one of the UK’s top performers.

Podcast with Ben FogleYou don’t realise what you have until you don’t have it anymore. It took being locked indoors for lots of us to realise the value of grass, trees, forests, rivers and lakes! The outdoors has been such an important part of Ben’s life and personal development. The outdoors is part of him.

Isn’t it weird that we have to differentiate between being “indoors” vs “outdoors”? Ben talks about the outdoors being the niche or the unusual. Maybe we’re seeing a shift as more people realise that the outdoors is an amazing place. It’s not just for long beards, expensive walking shoes and goretex jackets.

New Lives in the Wild

We talk about many things in our podcast about the great outdoors including some of Ben’s experiences with the inspiring people he’s met whilst filming New Lives in the Wild (catch up on demand here) with people figuring out how to lead a life that suits them. It’s not longer about trying to smash a square peg into a round hole and measurements of “success” are changing from high paid, high-flying jobs to, well simply happiness. Through some of the "stars" of the show, we also talk about diversity in the outdoors and opening the opportunities to a wider circle of outdoor enthusiasts, something Ben is incredibly passionate about.

Are you conforming to expectations to society or are you moving to your own beat? It’s very easy to become the sheep, but if you’re brave enough, a common thread through New Lives in the Wild series, you can achieve what you set out to do.

We also talk to Ben about:

  • Rowing the Atlantic
  • Cold water emersion and swimming to Alcatraz
  • That moment when he ran shirtless in the snow
  • Embracing the cold with cold water swimming, swimming to Alcatraz, that moment when he ran shirtless in the snow (bareskin running) as well as a little about the Wim Hoff method
  • Being Patron of the Wilderness for the United Nations.
  • How to adapt your adventures with children

We loved chatting to Ben. What did you think of the episode? What was your favourite bit?

In conversation with Julia Bradbury

In the first episode of season three of the Outside & Active podcast, we are joined by Julia Bradbury, one of the small screen’s most popular and versatile presenters.

Before we begin the episode, we’d like to share a short message from our episode partner Pellitec.

The UK developed PelliTec blister prevention pads stick to the inside of your footwear not on your skin. The pads have a unique structure and their gel core moves with your foot to reduce the friction which causes blisters. PelliTec pads fit all shoe sizes and can be applied to any part of your footwear staying firmly in place even if your feet get wet. If a blister is already present the pads cushion to relieve pain wicking away moisture to reduce infection risk. There is now no need to carry on in pain or stop walking altogether because of a blister. Simply use PelliTec blister prevention pads. To find out more, head over to their website here

We also have an awesome competition from our friends at Mounts. You could win a Mounts Slumber Sack worth £130.

Mounts. Specializing in outdoor, camping, and adventure needs for babies, toddlers and children. Get the gear you need to grow your child from a mount into a mountain. To enter the competition head over to our website before Friday 13th May on our website here

Podcast with Julia Bradbury

Through our chat, we talk about bribing our children to get out on walks and enjoying the outdoors and when one of Julia’s children said “mummy, blossoms make me feel happy” I think both of our hearts melted a little… Getting children used to being outside and enjoying the outdoors can be difficult but take small steps. Find a tree to climb. A new park to play in. Julia shares some great advice for families here.

When looking at ourselves however, it’s very easy to lose sight of how we need to keep our natural body systems working properly. We need to move, we need to incorporate natural exercise into our everyday lives as when we don’t we start to get ill, we start to feel run down by the effects of our stressful lives. It’s incredibly important to get outside for 120 minutes a week (that’s just two hours), which form a recent study showed that everyone that took part in the exercise felt better both mentally and physically from being in the outdoors.

Julia also talks to us about being the first female President of the Camping and Caravanning Club and how the club is opening up camping and the wild for everyone. Julia uses the outdoors both as a place to restore herself maybe do some sort of mindful meditation or using the outside for calming purposes, or she can use time outdoors to push herself and challenge herself and camp in some weird place and find something new again.

Finally, we also talk about Julia’s experience with cancer and the benefits of time outdoors can have on your mental and physical well-being. A surprising subject to talk about you may think, but every day since Julia’s operation in October 2021, she has spent some time outside whether that’s doing her shoulder shrugs in the garden, watching birds playing or a short walk around the block.

You may want to watch Juila’s recent documentary we talked about over on ITV here “Julia Bradbury, Brest Cancer and Me”

About Julia Bradbury

Julia Bradbury is one of the small screen’s most popular and versatile presenters.

Having taken the helm on BBC One’s rural affairs show Countryfile alongside Matt Baker in 2009, the show’s ratings soared to over 7 million viewers.

Julia’s reputation as the face of the outdoors began when she fronted Wainwright Walks

In this episode of the Outside & Podcast, we talk to a good friend of Outside & Active, Brian Wood.

Well known for the documentary (and book) of his story on the BBC titled Danny Boy, we documented Brian’s journey back in November as he ran 25 marathons in 25 days in memory of fallen comrades through the Iraq & Afghanistan conflicts with one mile dedicated to every 635 lives lost.

He describes himself as “not a runner” – we beg to differ. We talk to Brian about the battle of Danny Boy and then on to his running journey with the Ultimate Sacrifice and how it has helped his mental health and physical health and strength.

Brian raised £170,000 for charity Walking with Wounded. You can sponsor Brian here or if you want to follow Brian's Keep Attacking series of events or merchandise, please do check out his website here.

In this slightly shorter than normal episode, this conversation with Chemmy Alcott, a 4x Winter Olympian, British National Champion and the only British female skier to ever win a run in a world cup, talks to us about training, work life balance with family in tow and more importantly her passion to be back in the mountains. We also talk to Chemmy about her fairly random Guiness world records…

About Chemmy

As a 4 x Winter Olympian, a career high ranking of 8th in the World, 7 x British National Overall Champion and the only British female skier to ever win a run in a World Cup, Chemmy Alcott is widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest ever skiers.

In a time where competing at a Winter Olympics was unusual for a British athlete, Chemmy defied the odds and pioneered a skiing movement that has inspired a generation. Resulting in not just skiers, but British Winter Sport athletes as a whole seeing the Winter Olympics as a realistic and achievable goal.

Since retiring from competing on the world stage after The Sochi Olympics in 2014, Chemmy has immersed herself in the world of TV & media, where she now presents for the BBC on Ski Sunday and commentates on the World Cup Ski Series for Eurosport amongst being a guest on many other show. Furthermore, she competed in ITV Dancing on Ice in 2012, where she finished 5th.

When John was growing up, he needed something that he could use to get out of his very sporty brothers shadow with. After trying many different sports, why not give running a go he thought?

John decided to enter the Great South Run 10-mile race, and as a 16-year-old with no formal running training ran a time of 59 minutes, finishing 75th out of 10,000 runners.

That was it… He was immediately hooked. To cut a long story short, running has been his life ever since. With highs of representing England and Great Britain, and lows of horrible injuries, or being wheelchaired away from his first marathon – it’s safe to say John has been through it all.

Since turning passion into profession and forming ‘Move Better Run Better team’, John and his team have coached hundreds of runners around the world to smash PBs, avoid and reduce injuries, and achieve things they previously thought beyond them.

Welcome back to episode three of the Outside & Active Podcast and on this episode, we are joined by two incredible adventurers with Anna McNuff and Jamie McDonald aka Adventureman. But it wasn’t just this powerhouse of an adventure couple that were part of our conversation, no…. we also had baby Storm come along and quite possibly steal the show! Despite various cuddles, chuckles and interruptions, we had a great conversation about their recent challenges and how they fit in training with their relatively new addition to the family.

We have both of these inspiring adventurers books available on our website, have a look at shop.outsideandactive.com and as a listener to the podcast, if you use the code PODCAST at checkout, you’ll get 10% off until the end of January.

About Jamie McDonald AKA Adventureman

Jamie is unique in his ability to keep going, even when times are tough. In fact, since defying the odds to beat a debilitating childhood condition, he’s proved it beyond all doubt, twice breaking two of the toughest endurance Guinness World Records on the planet in the process.

If anybody holds the secret to never giving up, it’s him.

For the first nine years of Jamie’s life, he was in and out of hospital with a rare spinal condition called syringomyelia. Combined with a very weak immune system, epilepsy and problems with his legs; Jamie’s family feared he’d end up in a wheelchair and would never walk again.

At 9 years old, the symptoms eased, something Jamie attributes to an effort to become more active by moving his body, playing tennis and the help from doctors and nurses.

In later years, aged 25, Jamie saved up for a deposit on a house, but got that gut feeling that it wasn’t quite right and in the end; decided against buying. Jamie then began a quest, using his savings, to give back to the hospitals that supported him.

Previous adventures and challenges include; cycling 14,000 miles from Bangkok to Gloucester; breaking the world record for 11 days non-stop cycling on a static bike; running 5,000 solo miles across Canada; and then 5,500 miles across America (more than 200 marathons).

If that wasn’t enough, recently Jamie broke one of the toughest endurance world records on the planet, spending 7 days on a treadmill, surviving off less than 3 hours of sleep a night; running the most amount of miles humanly possible to this point in time; a record breaking distance of 524 miles. That’s 3 marathons a day.

Pushing his mind and body beyond painful places few will ever experience, Jamie knows what can drive humans, no matter what, to keep going.

About Anna McNuff

Anna is an adventurer, speaker, author and mischief maker. Named by the Guardian as one of the top female adventurers of our time, Condé Nast Traveller included her in a list of the 50 most influential travellers in the world. She is the UK ambassador for Girl Guiding, and has cycled over 20,000 miles in Europe and the Americas, including through all 50 states of the USA. She has also run the length of New Zealand, and has a penchant for rollerblading.

In the summer of 2019 she set off on her most ambitious adventure yet – an attempt to run 2,620 miles (100 marathons) through Britain… in her bare feet.
