If, like me, you have aches and pains that come and go, you may have tried a few different methods of alleviating your ailments.
I’ve tried physiotherapy, chiropractors, body stress release, TRE and even Rolfing.
Rolfing is when a practitioner massages the muscles and fascia not only where you're feeling pain, but all over your body with the goal of fixing your body's posture so that it corrects any lingering imbalances that are causing the pain.
Sometimes we can identify the reason for the pain we are feeling. I walk into a countertop and bruise my hip or I lift a weight from a position of instability and I pull muscle of pinch a nerve.
But what if the origin of the pain you feel in your body isn’t as obvious to identify. This is where I started to explore the world of somatic therapy.
Somatics is described as "any practice that uses the mind-body connection to help you survey your internal self and listen to signals your body sends about areas of pain, discomfort, or imbalance".
These practices - and there are many of them - allow you to access more information about the ways your body might hold on to your experiences.
My guest on this episode is Shaun Brooking.
Shaun earned an Honours degree in Human Performance in 2007, after completing his degree in Sports and Exercise Science. at Stellenbosch University.
Since then, Shaun has added depth to his academic knowledge through personal experience and further education, developing himself into a somatic coach and educator.

If you’re anything like me - and I think you are - you may have healthy debates with friends about how the schooling system has developed our way of thinking.
Programed us to believe that a holiday is when you slow down.
Groomed us even, into believing that we don’t deserve a physical or mental break unless our calendar is clear, our email inbox is empty and our to-do list is all wrapped up.
These debates often arrive at the conclusion that while elements of this may be true, ultimately we have less and less capacity.
In this episode, I speak with Ronen Aires about the importance of taking control of one's busy schedule and finding ways to add capacity to our lives.
We delve into a concept Ronen calls "The Chooseday Experiment," and he shares his personal journey of dedicating Tuesdays to doing things that bring him joy, fulfillment, and creative inspiration. By intentionally creating space for activities that resonate with his passions and well-being, Ronen has found a way to avoid burnout and recharge his creative energy.

Did you know there is a waste management system for your brain? Essentially it is responsible for carrying fresh fluids into and waste fluids out of your brain. This happens mostly during sleep. So, what then if you don't get enough sleep?
While I do not have the answer to that question, I can tell you how I feel when I don't get good quality sleep. And I'm sure your story would be similar. Groggy. Lethargic. Foggy. Irritable. You know the drill.
I have lucked out on my fair share of sleep in my lifetime. I've also had my sleep cycles interrupted far too many times. Having a young child with epilepsy means I never really switch off, simply because a seizure can happen without warning.
I’ve slept in hospital passages, on the floor in hospital rooms, and prior to Zoe being born, I even slept in back up studios between radio shows. This sleep I speak of was never restorative. And I know now how much of an impact this added to my burnout.
Dr. Els van der Helm is a sleep neuroscientist and joins me on this episode from her home office in Switzerland. Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global named Dr. van der Helm one of the top 5 sleep experts in the world. Els, she said I can call her by her first name, is very much focused on helping us improve our day to day performance by improving the sleep of business leaders and their teams.
Because keeping it together is so much harder than we ever thought it would be, I really hope this episode of Some Assembly Required gives you insight into how your brain works when you're not thinking about it.

We're often told that dealing with daily situations is simply a case of mind over matter, but very seldom are we taught skills to implement this.
Dr Kirsten Van Heerden is one of only a handful of people in South Africa to have both represented her country as an athlete and hold a PhD in the area of sport psychology. She has guided many Olympians, World Champions and South African sports teams over there mental barriers.
In this episode we discuss so much. From how to pick yourself up after receiving negative feedback to toxic positivity, how high performers' tend to attach their sense of self worth to their ability to execute skills and how mental toughness can be mixed up with mental health, which is not great for your well-being.

This is a bonus episode that involves a body based practice led by Shaun Brooking, designed to re-invigorate the nervous system and restore balance.
If you haven’t listened to the previous episode "Working on your nerves" yet, Shaun and I discuss a range of subjects including some of his athletic journey and we scratch the surface of neuroscience, nerve tension, stress management and how the body stores pressures and even trauma.
If you have listened to the previous episode, you may already have done a check in and established if you are in a red, amber or green zone.

Somatics is described as "any practice that uses the mind-body connection to help you survey your internal self and listen to signals your body sends about areas of pain, discomfort, or imbalance".These practices - and there are many of them - allow you to access more information about the ways your body might hold on to your experiences.

I was recently in conversation with someone and we got to talking about how I am not qualified to speak about trauma.
You see, I wanted to create this podcast but felt like an imposter and unequipped.
I do not have a tertiary education and therefore I am not qualified to speak about burnout or mindset, let alone about capacity building or mental health in any form.
I am not a psychologist.
I’m not a psychiatrist. I’m not a counselor, nor do I claim to be a therapist of any kind.
I am just a dad.
And I’m just a dad to one child.
Yes, that 6 year old child - Zoe is her name by the way - has intractable epilepsy, and follows a restrictive ketogenic diet, takes three different anticonvulsants every single day, and consumes all her liquids in jelly form because she has yet to master controlling fast moving liquids.
That jelly is made of a *fucking expensive formula milk, an emulsified MCT oil and gelatin - which I weigh out - to the gram - twice a week.
Yes, my little girl is developmentally delayed, and has seen a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a speech therapist every single week of her life. Well, excluding the weeks she was hospitalized, obviously.
Yes, Zoe is non-verbal, and unable to feed herself, wash herself, dress herself and non-ambulant. Her neurologist used that word in a letter to the medical aid this week so I’m trying to work it into my vocabulary. It means - people who are unable to move without assistance, for example a person confined to bed.
Yes, my daughter has an ICD10 code, and a god-awful mucus suction machine. She also has a wheelchair, a feeding chair, a standing frame, a bed with rails and she wears orthotics on her legs to try and correct biomechanical issues around her feet. Oh and there was that one time when I gave Zoe mouth-to-mouth and resuscitated her limp body.
Yes… I am just a dad.
A dad that has been there every step of the way. Often it feels like one step forward, two steps back, half a step sideways before taking another step forward again. I’m very fortunate to have done this dance of life with my superhuman wife. ( Rue says “hi” ) She has a PhD by the way.
And while I am not qualified in a cap and gown ceremony, certificate on the wall, kind of way, my credentials are lived.
Every.
Single.
Day.
When I remind myself of all of this, I think I have skin in the game.
And then I remind myself that I have worked through burnout. With the help of therapy and antidepressants. Guys, I hosted radio shows, entertaining hundreds of thousands of people with banter and jokes while my wife sat next to Zoe in the hospital, counting the number of times Zoe had a seizure so that she could relay the info to the doctors. To this very day I get anxious about leaving them, and overwhelmed by bustling environments.
I have lived the most bizarre secondary trauma and it creeps up on me when I don’t get enough sleep, sunshine or exercise… which is too often than I care to admit.
And that is why this podcast exists.
Because being human is hard. I know this. You know this.
Because keeping it together is harder than it looks, and it’s made even harder when we do it alone.
So, this is an invitation for you to join me. Subscribe to Some Assembly Required wherever you like to listen to podcasts and together we can breakdown and reassemble again.
I’m going to release three different formats for you; some episodes will be interviews with experts about everything from sleep to psychology and nutrition; some episodes will be like this one, just me sharing and others will be stories told by you and me together.
Let’s reassemble the way we think, feel and respond to our friends and family.
( PART 2 ) I chat with Brandon Beack, who at 16 years old had everything he could have wanted. He was a promising gymnast, has a loving family, and lived near the beach - life was in some respects, idyllic. Until an accident changed his life forever. That was roughly 8 years ago and a lot has happened in Brandon's life since then.He is now a full-time athlete, a business owner and Brandon runs the first of its kind rehab centre in South Africa. Brandon inspires me and gives me strength, to keep on keeping on. I'm sure his story will do the same for you. Doctors may have told us that Zoe is not a plane we can fix, and while I'm not here to fix her, I believe that she gets to decide what her limitations are and nobody else.I hope you enjoy this 2 part finale to Season One of Unstoppable.Brandon Beack on InstagramWalking With Brandon on InstagramThe Therapy & Beyond Centre / The Walking With Brandon FoundationWebsite: www.walkingwithbrandon.orgE-mail: admin@walkingwithbrandon.orgPhone: +(27) 21 879 2280Music by Eric Williams and Epidemic Sound
