Hi everybody,

You will notice that some episodes on Karla Reads the Classics are now subscription only.

Most of the content here will remain free, but again, certain episodes will now require subscriptions.

Since the podcast began two years ago, I have asked for donations to help keep it going and growing, but I get very little response to that request.

Your $6.99 monthly subscription will unlock 2 to 3 full, ad free, classic episodes per month; at least 24 episodes per year.

Thanks again for listening.

A great, controversial (for the time) semi-autobiographical short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman about the mental health deterioration of a woman, and her obsession with the wallpaper in a room of a country estate she & her physician husband rent for three months. (Published in 1892).

After publication, a Boston physician wrote to New England Magazine objecting to the publication of this short story, saying it was enough to drive anyone mad to read it! (americanyawp.com)

Juan Preciado promises his dying mother that he will go to Comala to find his father. When he arrives he finds the town a bit strange. He is directed to Eduviges's house for lodging. She is an old friend of his mother's. When he arrives, he has to sleep on the floor.  He's awakened by a man's scream, and then taken to another woman's house; Damiana Cisneros. She tells him that the town is full of ghosts and disappears on the street. Juan is then taken in by a husband/wife; brother/sister. Juan dies from fear, and is buried in a coffin with Dorotea. In this coffin, he begins to learn the story of his father, Pedro Paramo.

Thanks for listening! :-) Click here to Donate; https://anchor.fm/karla3507/Support........................... Ivan Ilyich is the sad story of the protracted death of a government official. Ivan Ilyich is married, has children, a career, and by asll accounts seems to have done everything right. He takes a new, better paying job, and whilst hanging curtains in preparation for his family's arrival to the new home, he falls against the window. Thinking nothing of it, he later begins to feel pain, a pain that would ravage his body. Doctors cannot find consensus about his illness, and Ilyich's pain grows more severe. He resents his family who he believes, rightly so, find his illness and impending death a mere inconvenience to their lives.  Ilyich's confrontation with death, about what is right, and the inevitability of death torment him throughout his illness. At first, he tries to forget about his illness by throwing himself into his work; to go on living his pleasant life as normal. As he confronts death, he knows that in the end that none of it matters; nothing he has accomplished in his life means anything when stood against the slow death he faces.

He visits her, although they have decided he should no longer do so, and he reads to her from Songs of Ossian, which makes them both weep. They share a moment and a kiss after which Charlotte retreats to another room. Werther continues his letters to Wilhelm, and he is certain that the only remedy for his torturous love is the grave. Through a series of letters written to his friend Wilhelm, Werther describes how he is happy to be away after having caused some distress to a young woman with whom he was involved named Lenore. He focuses on the beauty of his new surroundings in a place his family owns, Walheim. This beauty distracts him from his usual pursuits like reading and drawing. He meets a judge with whom he gets on well. The judge invites him to his home. after some time, he accepts an invitation to a ball at the judge's home, where he meets and immediately falls for Charlotte as they dance. He hangs on her every word, but as the dance proceeds, a woman there finds it necessary to remind Charlotte that she is betrothed to Albert.  $JessTSM #Goethe #TheSorrowsofYoungWerther #Literature #ClassicLiterature #ReadToMe #Charlotte #Lotte #KarlaReadstheClassics

Charlie is back in New York. He gets a new apartment. He reads the headlines about his experience in Chicago and learns that his family are all still alive. He finds his father who now has his own barbershop. He gets a shave and haircut, and then decides not to reveal his identity to his father who doesn't recognize him. It has been 17 years since they last saw each other. He meets Fay, his neighbor, and in intimacy with her, he begins to realize that the old Charlie is still there, watching him. He returns to the lab, but not without first obtaining permission from the foundation to be able to conduct his own research. Strauss and Nemur are cordial, but they aren't pleased with his new authority.

Charlie heads to Chicago with Strauss and Nemur for the International Science Conference. He becomes increasingly angry and resentful of their thinking of him as an experiment rather than as a human being. He begins to see them as regular men with huge egos rather than the geniuses he first believed them to be. His intelligence has surpassed theirs, and he finds a flaw in their calculations. He first thinks to expose this flaw but decides against it. He opens Algernon's cage and sets him free, then heads back to New York; Algernon in tow.

Tip Cup: $JessTSM Charlie Gordon is selected for an experimental surgery, if successful, will make him "smart." He is advised to keep a report of his thoughts and remembrances prior to and after the operation. He works in a bakery and is often the butt of cruel jokes from people who he thinks are his friends. His doctors tell him that the operation may not be successful, and if it isn't, he will have to go back to a state-run mental hospital. They tell him that the change in intelligence is not immediately noticeable. Charlie is eager to see the changes which will indicate to him that the operation was a success; that he is smart. They introduce him to Algernon, a white mouse who has already undergone the operation. Algernon easily frequently beats Charlie at a maze game, and Charlie is sad to find out that if Algernon does not successfully work the maze, he will not find his food. As Charlie remembers, he writes. We begin to see his metamorphosis in real time as Charlie's writing begins to change. He begins to work a machine at his job at the bakery that was once considered too difficult for him to learn to operate.

Easter approaches and it is learned that Mr. Darcy will be visiting. He asks Elizabeth about her family and they later go to Rosings, where Lady Catherine doesn't seem to enjoy their company. She just wants to talk to her nephews. Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam sit next to each other and talk and Darcy glares at them. When he joins her at the piano, they talk about music when Elizabeth tells Darcy that no one can intimidate her.

Mr. Collins declares his intention to dance the first two dances with Elizabeth, who is bummed because she intended to have those dances with Mr. Wickham. She is perturbed by Wickham's story of Darcy not honoring the elder Darcy's wish to have Mr. Wickham on the property as clergy. At the ball, Collins won't leave her side and she hates it. Mary sings, badly, and Elizabeth cringes. She gives her father a "do something" look, and he tells Mary to let others have a chance to entertain. Collins, some time after, asks Mrs. Bennet & daughters if he can have a moment alone with Elizabeth. Elizabeth asks them not to go, but they do. Collins tells Elizabeth that he intends to ask for her hand and assumes she'll say "yes." She straightens him out on that.

Mr. Collins, cousin to the Bennets, has written to Mr. Bennet offering an olive branch about the property at Longbourne passing to him rather than to Mr. Bennet and eventually to his girls. Mrs. Bennet doesn't like him. He is the clergyman at Lady Catherine's estate, and is proud of this connection. The girls ignore him when he tries to read to them at dinner. They attend a party at the Phillips's house, and Mr. Wickham is there. He tells Elizabeth that he and Darcy grew up together, and that Darcy never liked how his father was so close to Wickham. When the elder Darcy died, Mr. Wickham was to have the living on the estate, but the younger Darcy refused to acknowledge the elder's wish after he died. Elizabeth is appalled and wants to expose Darcy, but Wickham is against it.

He visits Faber after asking how many copies of the bible are left. He wants to print one before they are all burned. Faber thinks Montag is brave for wanting to steal books and make copies of them. Cady painstakingly remembers all the details of how the fire started, the instructions she gave to Gat, Johnny, and Mirren on how to start fires on the different levels of the house.  She remembers how she started the fire on the bottom floor and how it made escape more difficult. She remembers running to Cuddledown and hoping that they would be their waiting for her. She remembers finding the house dark and running back to the fire where she heard the screams and watched as the burning stair case fell. She grieves.  She finally says good bye to the liars, and slowly begins to wonder if there will be another story, as the previous one has ended.

Meet the Sinclair family, told in this section from the perspective of a young girl named Cadence. They summer at Martha's Vineyard and have a number of houses on the beach. However, there is a sadness in the tone of the telling. Cadence's parents have divorced, and over the summers of her time at the beach houses, she has fallen in love with Gat, whose father lives with Johnny's (Cadence's aunt) mother; a Sinclair sister.

Dr. Mannette's letter is read to the court. He describes why and at whose hands he was imprisoned for so long. He recalls walking home and being stopped by a carriage and told his help is needed. He is taken to a house to attend a young woman with a fever, and a young boy who has been stabbed with a sword, only used by nobles. The woman and the boy are brother and sister. The nobles wanted the sister who was married. They killed her husband and took the sister. The young brother hid his younger sister, and returned to avenge the older sister's kidnapping and rape, and was wounded in the fight.

The young woman dies & Dr. Mannette refuses payment for his services. He returns home and is told a woman is waiting to see him. It is the wife of one of the nobles who raped the young woman and killed her brother. She leaves her husband, taking her young son with her, and wants to help the younger sister of the woman who died. She wants her son to be raised differently.

Dr. Mannette writes a letter to a state official explaining what has happened. Later, Dr. Mannette is told by his servant (DeFarge) that a man wishes to see him. They claim an urgent medical case, and take Mannette to where the brothers are waiting. His letter to the state official is burned, and Dr. Mannette is taken to prison.
