If you're considering adding partnerships and affiliates to your business, there are many factors to take into account in order to ensure success. Affiliate programs can greatly increase your reach and revenue when done correctly, but it's important to have a clear plan in place before diving in.
First and foremost, you need to have a clear message about your business.
Next, you need to outline the benefits of your affiliate program. Highlighting these benefits will help attract quality affiliates who will be invested in promoting your business.
Setting up your system is also crucial. This includes creating a tracking how you will pay out commissions.
You should also identify metrics for tracking the success of the affiliate program. Keeping tabs on these metrics will help you fine-tune your program over time.
Finally, including a contract between you and your affiliates is important to protect both parties' interests. Remember that you are building a legitimate business that you want to protect. Contracts are important.

To be an official legal business, you need to register your business entity with your state if you’re in the U.S. or with your country’s necessary business formation office in other countries.
When you register, there are certain legal steps that you fulfill to be an official legal business.

Interventions are one of the many things that I enjoyed working with in the schools. The interventions were for students or for employees. They were at the individual, group, or system levels.

Mark Amend said that “rejection doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough; it means that the other person failed to notice what you have to offer.”
Rejection is a part of the entrepreneurial journey.
It’s what you do after the rejection that matters.
People don’t like to be sold. I think we can all agree with that.
But we also don’t like to be rejected.
Let’s be honest. No one likes to be rejected
It’s not a great feeling at all.
It brings out all those feelings of why and self-doubt.
You know what I’m talking about.
We start asking ourselves:
“why am I doing this?”
“why did I leave that great paying job I had?”
“Why doesn’t anyone want my product or service?”
“I guess my family was right, this business was a bad idea coz I don’t know what I’m doing.”
These negative thoughts creep in simply because we are getting rejected and we don’t have a way to deal with that rejection.
But we have to learn how to regulate those emotions, those negative disruptive emotions
But there’s something that I remind myself in the face of rejection. In this episode, I share about what that is that I remind myself about.

Would you let a doctor perform surgery on you without reviewing and signing an agreement?
Just take a few seconds to answer that question. But then again, you probably did not even have to think about it. You knew your answer right away.
There are several mistakes that we all make when we are starting and growing our micro and small businesses.
Some of those mistakes can be VERY damaging.
Think of that question that I asked at the beginning. We make sure to protect ourselves, so that's why we don't let a medical doctor perform surgery without an agreement. Yet, when it comes to our small businesses, many of us rush to do work with others without any agreements.

“I couldn’t grow my business because I kept pretending that it was doing fine” - that's something that I had to admit to so that I could grow my business.
Think of the many times that people have asked you:
How are you doing?
How’s your business?
And then what do we say….
“I’m fine. My business is fine.”
When we really know that things are not fine. You’re not fine and your business is not fine.
But for some reason, we feel so compelled to say that things are fine
Why are we pretending?
Here’s my thought….

17% of small businesses fail because they do not have a business plan
You might not think that number is high, but what if you were in that 17%. Looks different now, doesn’t it.
Have you thought about the plan for your business?
Seriously, you need to think about the plan for your business and actually write one out!
But having a written plan does not automatically mean that you are going to be successful. Because there are so many parts to the plan and we need to ensure that we are completing the research to include the relevant information into our business plans.
Having a plan helps out so much, more than what several micro and small business owners think.

Be honest, are you truly committed to seeing your business grow?

Being an entrepreneur is not an easy thing. There are tons of things that we have to and need to learn.
That doesn't mean that you have to get caught up with shinny object syndrome. You still need to be strategic in what you’re learning.

As business owners, founders, and entrepreneurs, we are constantly looking at how we can improve our business so that we can continue to work towards the goals in our strategic plans. Here are two questions for you to think about:
Do you make changes in your business just because or do you have a plan of when to make the changes?
Are you using shiny object syndrome to make changes so you can keep up with the latest and greatest thing?
These are questions that we need to be asking ourselves AND answering. The reason being that the answers that we have to those questions will give us more than we might be expecting. Those answers can help us solve some problems that we are stuck on right now.
Having a business is not the same as having a SUCCESSFUL business!
Let’s be honest. If you’re one of those people who find their business draining and frustrating then it is very likely that you are missing the “when” of your business.

As a Strategic Business Coach, I have met several people who are dreaming of having their own business or they told me about the business they tried to start, but it failed.
Then I have met entrepreneurs who are running their own business by they are not happy with how it is doing. For many of them, they started their business on the side while they were still working full-time for someone else. Then years past and they become frustrated because they still can't stop working for someone else because their business is not growing.

This might seem like a simple question, but I encounter so many business owners and entrepreneurs who can’t answer this question.

John Dewey said, "We do not learn from experience ... we learn from reflecting on experience."
As part of that reflection, we might reflect on our goals.
Goals seem so distant that giving up seems better. But here’s the thing, the goal might seem distant because of how we write the goal and how we are working on that goal.
The impact of those things are much bigger than many of us want to admit.
When we write goals, sometimes we write them and just focus on that end product. We forget about the journey towards the end. It is during that journey that we have to stay motivated and keep taking action to get us to accomplish our goal.

So given that 69% of entrepreneurs like you and I start our businesses at home. It got me to thinking about that task of actually working from home.
As in the whole environment and how it impacts my productivity.
So when I thought about all the jobs that I have had in the past prior to be a school psychologist and then working from home, I started to think of the places where I was most productive.

In an article in the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, O’Shea and Buckley shared that in the early stages of building their business, entrepreneurs have to learn to manage their learning and their acquisition of knowledge.
That success is connected to self-regulated learning that we do as entrepreneurs.

I couldn't believe the day came when I made it to 1 year after making the big decision of having my own business.
On that day, I remember telling myself, "You hold the power to move your distant dream of success from dream to an everyday reality."
Seriously, I kept telling myself that for an entire year and it helped me out.
It was not easy to get to that 1 year mark. There were so many things that I didn't know and so many things that I needed to figure out. Getting to that 1 year mark didn't happen by accident.
I found some strategies that I thought would work. Implemented those strategies and benefited from the results of my actions. I couldn't believe it. I had some doubts throughout that first year, but I didn't let those doubts stop me.

“I forgot to post today!”
Has that ever happened to you?
Posting on social media was not something that I needed to do every day in my 8-hour a day school psychologist position. I just had to show up for work. I was present. I was on campus or in my district office.
But I still needed to build rapport and relationships with my team members and co-workers. So even though I wasn’t posting on social media, I still needed to show up every day.
That meant that there were certain times in the day when I would do my check-ins with my team members and colleagues. Sometimes scheduled, sometimes unscheduled.
Those check-ins helped me to get to know others and to brainstorm ideas and even receive feedback on projects I implemented. It was very rewarding.
So when I became an entrepreneur and have my own online-based coaching business, it meant that I no longer had those opportunities to walk around and connect with others and build relationships.
That’s where social media kicked in. But I’ll be honest, to remember to post every single day was a challenge.
It wasn’t something I was use to doing before so it was difficult to do it for my business.
I remember that I would be good at posting once a day for one day.
Then I got good at posting 3 times a day for like 4 days, but then that became exhausting.
I remember asking myself how do other business owners stay consistent with showing up on their social media without having it take over their entire day!
So when I found out about social media schedulers....that changed my entire approach to social media.
If you aren’t already using a scheduler, then you are wasting your hours posting content daily, weekly, or how ever many times you sit to post your content on social media.

This is more true than you might be thinking right now.
There’s lot of things that I don’t know. But it took me a while to realize that that’s fine.
It can be scary to think of the things that we don’t know. Many of us have a habit of comparing ourselves to others and thinking that the other person is so much more knowledgeable.
We focus on what they seem to know but then focus on what we don’t know.
I have done that before.
From the time I started my journey as a school psychologist and then when I made the decision to be an entrepreneur. I kept focusing on all the things that I didn’t know.
But guess what, by doing that, I was just blocking my own success.
We can be our biggest critics and we can sabotage our own successes in life.
I thought that I was learning and building up a repertoire of these amazing skills that I would need to be a school psychologist and even a successful entrepreneur. But the thing was that I was just using my quest for knowledge as yet another block.
It was an excuse for me to not move forward. It was easier to tell myself that I needed to keep learning so I can be successful.
In this episode, I share with you a way to stop focusing on what you don’t know so you can move your business forward.

When you decided to start your business, did you have a plan beyond saying “I want to make money”
Sure, having money is a great feeling and yes, you have to spend money to make money,
But do you know that without the right plan, you’re just giving away your money
And watching your dreams be out of your reach.
I decided to start my business coaching company after spending years in psychology and education. I always knew that I wanted my own business.
But the thing is that there are so many different types of businesses out there. So many industries. The two things that I will be sharing with you goes with any and all industries.
And if you’re like me, there are so many business that appeal to your interests and desires that it can be really hard to pick which business you want to have or do.
So maybe you thought about being an independent business owner or an independent consultant or be that entrepreneur to build your company from the ground up.
When you are now starting out, it doesn't matter if you're independent business owner, independent consultant, solopreneur, entrepreneur, or whatever you want to call yourself
As long as you're starting your own business, you need to have at least two things in your plan to get started especially if you want to last your 1st year not to mention your first 5 years.

I recently was chatting with a prospect and we got to talking about her needs.
She mentioned that one of the things that she believed her business needed was an impressive website.
When I asked why, she said that the reason would be for it to be successful.
Then I shared an alternative with her.
The reason why I shared the alternative with her is because when I first started thinking about having a business, I did so much research on the different types of website hosting platforms.
Checked out all their packages and features.
Then I realized that I needed a logo and a website address. As in the actual website address so that I can be official.
Coz those were the things that I needed to be legit right?
Wrong?
Here’s why that was the wrong thinking to have. It doesn’t matter if I have a fancy, impressive, or simple website
If no one knows it exist then it really can’t help me with growing my business. Coz I wouldn’t be getting any traffic.
But there was a time when I didn’t move forward with my business idea because of all of the finances associated with getting a domain name, designing a logo, developing a website, and then launching it.
But those were really just blocks that I was putting in my way to starting my business.
I wish I had known about these two things 4 years ago.

Have you ever been rejected?
I don’t know about you, but I have been rejected before.
I’ve been rejected by old boyfriends, universities that I applied to, scholarships that I applied to internships, jobs, committees that I applied to in professional organizations.
I even got rejected by school districts when I did my dissertation on clinical supervision, job satisfaction and burnout among school psychologists. Get this, I was told by the ones that rejected me that my study didn’t have value for their school district or their school psychologists!
And I found out that rejection also happens in any business.
We can learn from our rejections and improve our business. But that is only if you are willing to pay attention to the lesson that comes with the rejection.
So for some of us, when we started our business, we targeted everyone right?
All your friends and family members, and coworkers.
Probably even every single connection that you have on your social media.
How did that strategy work out for you? I bet your rolling in the dough aren’t’ you.

There are several reasons why they fail.
One of the reasons is failing to have a budget and not tracking how you spend your money.
You need to be budgeting if you want your business to survive its first 5 years! It doesn't matter if you are growing your business on the side while working a full-time job or if you are full-time building your own business. You need to have a budget!
Seriously, do you want to just be sitting and spending money on a whole set of things that you don’t need for your business.
Have you even thought about what you need for your business to survive it’s first month…
It’s first 6 months, 12 months….2 years!
If you haven’t I really recommend that you do if you really want your dream business to survive. Also, you should consider working with a business coach to help you with this.
Don’t let your family and friends give you the “I told you so” speech. Cause after all, they probably didn’t believe in your idea for your business.
But you do. So this is why you need to have a better handle on your finances.

The new year in the school system happens in August or September depending on where you are.
I worked as a School Psychologist and as a Special Education Director in the K-12 system. I remember each year, making a list of my new years’ resolutions. But within the first month, I stopped some but stuck with others. I always wondered why. I don’t remember ever sticking with all.
We know what we want to do or even what we need to do….
But yet we fail to do it.
We fail because we lack commitment to the task. At least that is only part of it.

There is so much to do in my business....I have lists, schedules, calendars, reminders, courses to review, 1:1 coaching sessions, group coaching sessions, webinars, content creation, keeping up with my social media, and not to mention cooking, laundry, and grocery shopping and spending time with my activities with my family!

Too often we like to focus on our weaknesses, on those things that we can’t do
Then we end up using those weaknesses as excuses for why we can take action

It’s important because when you know your strengths, you can clarify your goals and your outcomes. You decided to become an entrepreneur because you believed that you could use your strengths and interests to build a business and provide products and services to help others.

The point is that you started out by focusing on your strengths and interests when you decided to start your own business.

While working in K-12, I've interacted with so many different individuals and I saw how negative self-talk not only impacting our students impacted their performance in their achievement their social emotional growth and development
But I also saw how that negative self taught impacted the adults I worked with when it came to implementing initiatives and also when it came to implementing interventions
Too often we focus on the negative and that negative can bring us down and then cause us to abandon working on something that could be very beneficial like having our own business.
Remember that business that you started for yourself. You started it so that you can be an entrepreneur so why are you engaging in that negative self-talk. It is like you are sabotaging your business.

Remembering why we started our business can be very motivating to help us continue to build it. This is because we have some difficult days being a business owner.
But motivation alone doesn't help us figure out what is the next action that we need to take in our business to keep it moving forward.
Having a strategy and a strategic plan goes VERY well with our motivation to succeed. Our strategy helps us to have clarity and can help us with overcoming roadblocks quicker.
Having a strategy helps to remind me as to why I started my business.
Remember that not everyone in your life might be a source of encouragement when you are feeling down about your business and that's fine. Having a strategy, implementing that strategy, and revising that strategy can help you leave those naysayers behind as you accomplish your successes!

Along my professional journey, I've seen how a life changing event impact the staff members that I work with on the many teams I've worked with worked, especially how those life changing events impacted those adults in both their personal lives as well as their professional lives
Oftentimes we go through these events and we're not even realizing the magnitude of the event or even the impact of that event on our lives.
A life changing event can be positive for some of you. For instance, you may have landed that promotion that you were looking for or you may have have the birth of a new child.
Or it may have been something else. Like something negative occurring in your full time job that gets you thinking about the steps you need to take to become an entrepreneur and have your own business.
Guidant Financial Group found that 3% of entrepreneurs who started their business started their business after some huge life changing. Though that might seem like a small percentage, it might include you.
So the key is how to take that life changing even and let it work for you to help you grow you business. This key is what I share in this week's podcast.

I don’t know about you, but when I made the decision to start a business
I felt so accomplished…So imagine how over the moon I felt when I actually started it!
Then all I got was crickets chirping.
Did you know that you need Leads if you want to have a successful business?
When I first started my online business, I had no customers for months!
I was like ….What the heck? I started to thinking that….I should continue in my current job coz clearly this side-gig ain’t for me.
It wasn’t until I connected with a business coach that I found out that I needed leads.
Sounded simple right…I was told I needed leads. Problem solved right….
Nope…coz then my next issue was that I really didn’t know what leads were. I’ve been a school psychologist in school districts of all sizes.
I had never heard the term leads used in any of the school districts. We served students and their families.
But as a business owner, I needed to learn about what leads were and how I could get them so that my business would survive!

I don’t know about you, but when I was first told that I needed to prospect, I had no idea what that really meant.
I remember feeling great when I started my business, but then I got stuck. It wasn’t growing how I thought it would.
In my job at the time and with what I was learning in my doctorate program, I was familiar with recruiting, selecting, hiring, and retaining employees.
Then with starting my own business and being my own boss, it had me looking at things so different. And I was faced with this prospecting thing.
But the whole prospecting thing was new for me.
I read blogs that talked about the fact that your business cannot survive if you are not prospecting to get a team or customers.

So I am sure that you have heard about multitasking.
You probably even think that you are good at multitasking right?
You may even think that you are multitasking right now as you are watching this video or listening to this audio.
But here’s the thing, if you just said yes or nodded your head to any of those things, then I am here to tell you that you are not getting anything meaningful done.
As a school psychologist, I was trained to understand how the brain works. The brain takes in input and processes the information to make sense of it.
The thing is that the brain can only make sense of one set of information at a time.
I have spent years helping parents understand how their children think, remember, and solve problems. Being able to complete tasks and follow directions is a big thing for parents and teachers. Teenagers love to say that they're listening to you when they have their earphones in listening to music or watching YouTube or Netflix. But were they listening to you?
How about when your are answering the phone and writing an email at the same time. You’re multitasking right? You got both of them done real good right?
The thing is did you really because when that person asked you about something you said in the conversation 10 minutes later, you can't answer them or you answered wrong.
So in your business, you start working on writing a post, then you see an email on your phone come in so you start working on that, then you go to Facebook for whatever reason. Do you think that you are doing 3 things?

I went into my vault for this one. I recorded this back in the summer of 2020. It is a great reminder for me so I had to share.
If something unexpected happens in your life, do you stop working towards your goal?
Recently, I experienced an attack on my action plan.
I was in denial for a few weeks about it and I was trying to convince myself that I could do it all! I could not have been more wrong.
I questioned why. I know I had written down my goals. I had written down my action plan.
I was taking action towards meeting my goals. But what the hell…I had not done 95% of what I wanted to do between April and July!
I was not feeling very happy about my progress at all. I felt like just walking away.
Why was I feeling this way?
I figure out why. ….My action plan was being attacked by life!

It's easy for someone to tell us that we need to set goals, but there are at least 5 things that can block us from setting those goals.
If you are here's a thing that I want you to realize, those successful people that you are looking at became successful because the set goals and worked towards those goals.
But it didn't happen overnight.
Successful people encounter challenges, barricades, obstacles, and roadblocks as they were working towards their goals.
BUT, they do not let those challenges, barricades, obstacles, and roadblocks stop them. Why?
For a simple reason……their ultimate goal is to be successful and they want it so bad that they overcome challenges, barricades, obstacles, or roadblocks. You can too!
So, what are those blocks that are stopping you from achieving your goals?
I decided to do a quick search on the Internet and found lists from people that had 6, 7, and even 10 different blocks that people encounter. Then I decided, those lists didn’t match up with me. So…..
Here's what I found out when I was looking back on my life and my accomplishments and the struggles and everything that I've been through.

When it comes to goal setting, it's great to write your goals down, be specific, be realistic, have an action plan, set big goals, and know your why.
But none of that matters, if you don't take action.
I share 4 tips for you to help you take action!
So, what does it mean to take action with your goals? Think about your why and that action plan that you created.
Think about that deep personal motivation for what you are doing. That motivation will help propel you into action. Remember, if you can’t find at least three motivators for a goal, then that goal is not personal for you.
Remember, your goals are your goals. Your motivators are your motivators. What motivates you is specific to you, not anyone else. Even with the 4 tips I am going to share with you, how you respond to those 4 tips is going to be unique to you!

This is one of the first Facebook Lives that I did back in April 2020. I was so happy when I came across this information hat I decided to share it here with you.
I will be talking about the importance of knowing your why.
So basically, why is your goal your goal? Remember when you were writing your goals down. Why did you write that goal? Why did you include those tasks in your action plan? Why that big goal and small goals? There is a reason why. So what is it?
To know your why is to know your motivation for a goal. Your deep personal motivation for what you are doing. Your why is personal to you. Your why also includes why the goal is important to you.
In previous episodes, I talked about knowing what motivates you when you are thinking about your big goals. I talked about thinking about the things that you want. The things that you dream about. The things unique to you. When you know those things, that you are one step closer to understanding your ‘why.’
Identifying your why, helps you understand your what and how. So as you look back at those goals that you wrote down, at the things that you specified in your goal, at your big goal, and your small goals or tasks, you can have a better picture of your why.

I conducted trainings at the school or district level, as well as at professional conferences at the state, national, and international levels.
Trust me, when I say that when I started on my journey to becoming a school psychologist so that I could help children who were struggling in school like I did, I had no idea that I was going to teach, coach, or mentor adults, let alone enjoy doing it!
But I did! And I still do! That passion has evolved into me pursuing my doctorate with an emphasis in industrial and organizational psychology.
Then I used that knowledge with my experiences in the school systems to improve being a coach and mentor.
In my journey, I have learned the importance of
having a map,
knowing the outcome that I want,
outlining the steps on how to get there,
identifying the materials, strategies, and resources to get into action to reach my goals,
learning how to adapt the journey based on new information while taking action,
how to set realistic goals, and
how to measure progress towards those goals.
One of the toughest parts has been getting people to move out of their comfort zone so that they can reach their desired goal. Not to mention, increasing others’ self-confidence.
When working with administrators, it was always beneficial to be aware of the strategic goals for the school to help keep them focused on identifying appropriate actions to take and how and when to measure the impact of those actions.

When this happens, you might be experiencing issues such as depression, anxiety, burnout, addiction, just to name a few.
Yes the journey of being a business owner has its ups and downs, but how we deal with them determines the fate of our businesses.
I completely get that you started your business partly because you were tired of working for other people.
And there was something that you liked or that you were good at so you decided to turn that into a business.
But have you ever stopped to really examine the choices that you made for your business. I am talking about if you ever thought about the type of business or what you’re selling
Now I don’t want you to start thinking about your target audience or if you’re selling a product or a service.
What I mean is…have you thought about whether or not the business idea or products or services are a good fit for YOU!
Just because you like something or that you are good at it doesn’t automatically mean that you can turn it into a business, let alone a successful one.

So I don’t’ know about you but when I decided to start a business. I thought I could do it on my own.

Guess what I realized after bout two years and not growing my business as I thought it would.
Successful people collaborate with others. Many even form partnerships. And they are being successful. So where was the lone ranger…lone wolf mentality getting me…
Right between failure and giving up. It wasn’t a good feeling at all!
So I got to thinking about the successes that I had experience in my life. Like my career as a school psychologist and finishing my doctorate in organizational psychology. How did I get those?
Funny thing, as I was thinking about my how, I started thinking of all the who’s. I sound a little Dr. Suess-ish …lol! But seriously, the who’s were important. Why? Coz they were my mentors.
I am so fortunate for the mentors that I have had and continue to have on my journey.
