Being Home With Hunker: Recent Episodes

Hunker

At Hunker, we believe “home” means more than just where you live; it’s an expression of your identity, the place where you are most yourself. Being Home With Hunker is a podcast where, each week, Hunker editorial director Laurie Gunning Grossman chats with designers, artists, and creatives in the spaces that express and shape their identities: their homes. We talk about topics such as: How do their homes tell their story? What holds value? What are their non-negotiables? What does “being home” mean to them?

If you love design and decor, if you’re curious about how people live, or if you’ve been transitioning or transforming your own home, you’ll love these honest conversations.

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast we have interior designer Victoria Sass.

Victoria is the founder of Prospect Refuge Studio. She was named one of Architectural Digest’s 2022 New American Voices, highlighting rising designers who are “shaking up American interiors.”

Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Victoria and her design studio focus on transforming old homes for young families.

Her design aesthetic is a mix of California, Scandinavia, and midwestern soul.

Through her work, Victoria likes to amplify the stories that our homes tell. Part of her talent lies in world-building, in using these stories to encourage people tap into an emotional mindset and get out of the literal when designing their homes.

You’ll love what Victoria has to say on the topic of interior design, including her tips on client and interior designer relationships, her favorite materials to mix when designing a room, and which items she likes to start planning a room around.

It’s the season of giving and I've been thinking a lot about thankfulness.

Gratitude, what we’re personally grateful for, is different for each of us — because we each have our own life experiences, our own lens on how we see our world, both macro and micro.

But why is expressing our gratitude daily so important or helpful?

According to Harvard Health, giving thanks can make you happier. That in “positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

Perhaps you’ve heard that saying: “What you appreciate, appreciates.”

Or, where your attention goes, energy flows.

So, it makes sense as to why focusing on the things we’re grateful for is powerful.

I’m often curious what fills a person with appreciation – because within that I find inspiration. And so, for this podcast episode I reached out to some of our past guests to find out what they are grateful for, and I’m sharing it here with you.

“Feng shui is happening whether you endorse it or not, whether you believe it or not. Because if you have stuff, if you have space, it is happening all around you. So, it doesn’t care whether you believe in it or not. And again, this is my invitation, get curious about where your house can help you out, because it can.” -- Amanda Gibby Peters

Today on the show we have feng shui expert Amanda Gibby Peters.

Amanda is the creator and founder of Simple Shui and has been teaching feng shui techniques for over a decade. This includes teaching people how to become their own feng shui consultant, and her House Therapy Certification Program which empowers people to see their homes as living, breathing entities. Basically, she’s training us to see our homes as another family member!

In this conversation, we talk about how everything is energy, and everything is connected – this includes what we have in our homes or what’s happening in and around our homes. These things affect us.

Do you have leaks? Clutter? Something broken? Amanda encourages us to look at how these things are affecting us in other ways, such as financially, with our health, our relationships, our career… you get what I mean.

Amanda is here to drop some serious feng shui knowledge, tips, and advice – you’ll definitely come away with something tangible to help elevate the energy in your space and therefore in your life as well. Honestly, I was so thrilled with this conversation, and I think you will be, too.

This past October, host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) welcomed Nina Freudenberger to Hunker House in Venice, CA for a live recording of the Being Home With Hunker podcast.

Nina is no stranger to the podcast. We first had her on the show in 2021, and after that conversation ended, we realized that had even more questions we wanted to ask her. So, we were delighted when she agreed to come back to Hunker, yet this time IRL and in front of a design-loving group.

If you scroll through Instagram or Pinterest, chances are you’ve seen Nina’s books “Surf Shack” or “Bibliostyle” styled on a coffee table or bookshelf. (Her third book on mountain houses will be available in fall 2023.)

As the founder of Freudenberger Design Studio, she is known for her impeccable taste seen through her residential and hospitality projects. (We highly recommend a visit to White Water Cambria or San Luis Creek Lodge if you’re in California!)

Nina is a wealth of information and inspiration for anyone who loves design, wants to write design books, or is interested in an interior design career or side hustle.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) talks with Hawaiian light seer Kimo Kepano.

On Kimo’s Instagram and TikTok accounts, Kimo has been commenting on videos that feature paranormal activity — people seeing ghosts, knives flying through kitchens, hair being pulled when no one is in the room… you name it. He does these blind reactions where he watches videos that people send to him and then tunes into whether it’s truth or fiction. And you guys, some of these videos really are true. (Like the knife being thrown across the kitchen by spirit energy!)

As a light seer, Kimo can see what a lie looks like. This is how he knows if these ghosts videos are real or fake. He says that lies literally look like something — the colors are different, they have a different vibration — and so does truth. So Kimo can see it, hear it, and feel it. How cool is that?!

Kimo explains more in this conversation and shares some real spooky stories (as well as a sweet spirit story), so you’ll want to listen all the way through!

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) chats with interiors stylist Hilary Robertson.

Hilary is an interiors expert — so that means that she’s involved with creative direction, art direction, interior styling, product development (have you seen her gorgeous chain links you can find online at Bloomist?!)… and she is an author of five books, including “Monochrome Home” and her latest “Nomad at Home” which examines the influence of travel on home design. Her client list is vast, and includes Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Town and Country, Vogue Living, and Metropolitan Home, to name a few.

And in addition to all those “hats” that Hilary wears, she is also the style director for Leanne Ford’s new magazine FEEL FREE. (If you want to know more about that magazine, listen to the latest interview with Leanne Ford.)

In this conversation, Hilary talks about her work with FEEL FREE, her latest book “Nomad at Home,” the impact of travel in her life, and her styling rules.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman chats with Leanne Ford.

You most likely know Leanne as an interior designer, or as an HGTV star (Restored by the Fords and Home Again With the Fords), or as furniture designer in partnership with Crate & Barrel. But now Leanne has a new title to add to her name: print magazine creator.

Leanne recently launched a quarterly print magazine on art and home design called Feel Free. If you follow Leanne, you’ll agree that this name is just so fitting for who she is and what she represents.

In This Episode We Talk About:

  • The FEEL FREE magazine — what Leanne also calls a workbook — with the hope that people write on it, rip on it, put it on their wall, and get it messy!
  • Creating the magazine to expose people to artists, art, and to inspire people to live freely. (Because being perfect just isn’t a thing.)
  • The generosity of the artists who shared their artwork with Leanne to feature in the magazine (and for all of us to rip out!) – along with their tips on how to create art.
  • This magazine is for everyone, no matter what you want to create, whether it’s curating an online shop or writing that book you’ve been dreaming of.
  • Where Leanne gets her biggest inspiration (hint: it’s not design).
  • How the freedom to create is contagious.
  • How her 3 ½ year old daughter is in her prime creative time — and how inspiring it is to Leanne. (And how her launching her magazine is no surprise that it’s aligning with her daughter’s creativity.)
  • How much her spiritual life plays into her creativity, and how what she creates does not dictate her worth.
  • Working with interior stylist and author Hilary Robertson, who is the Style Director at FEEL FREE.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Kelly LeVeque.

Kelly wears many hats: she is a celebrity holistic nutritionist and wellness expert, an author, and podcast host of Be Well By Kelly. Perhaps you’ve heard of her and her uber-popular Fab 4 Smoothie. (She and her smoothie recipes have a big celebrity fan base.) I have her book “Body Love” and I can personally attest to the many great recipes, thoughtful advice, and scientific-based knowledge.

In our conversation, Kelly shares how to make her famous smoothie — as well as the science behind why it works. She also talks about the big renovation she and her family have been going through as they design their first home, and she has helpful ideas on how to “green” a home, from the paint to the furniture to the glue that holds her floors together.

Take a listen to the episode, and then be sure to check out Kelly’s protein powder, her books, and her guides and course. See below for links to everything.

In This Episode Kelly Talks About:

  • What the Fab 4 Smoothie is, and how everyone can make one at home.
  • How she is renovating her first home.
  • How she is designing her home with what she holds as valuable. Think: water filters, zero-VOC paint, non-toxic flooring, and eco-friendly furniture.
  • How to improve air quality in a home.
  • The effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) — and how she is addressing this in her home.
  • Wellness tips for how to use lighting in our homes.
  • Why she’s creating an open concept home.
  • Her happy place — the kitchen — and how she’s encouraging her boys to spend time together in this space.
  • Why she loves rugs — and how she’s choosing them for her home, making sure they are natural and non-toxic.
  • Other design elements she’s using and creating in her new home.
  • The words she and her husband used to help envision their home.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with The Brownstone Boys.

The Brownstone Boys, otherwise known as Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon, are interior designers, DIY-ers, and renovators of historic brownstones in Brooklyn, New York.

They share in this episode that after they purchased their first home together — which, yes, was a brownstone —they started a blog and Instagram account about their renovation process. What started as something to share with family and friends quickly turned into them helping other people renovate their brownstones. So, they did what anyone else would have done! They quit their corporate jobs and became the Brownstone Boys.

Jordan and Barry talk about their passion for preserving original details when renovating brownstones. They say that craftsmanship is very important to them and that their biggest goal is restoring the way brownstones used to be made.

They also discuss the definition of a brownstone, they share tips for anyone about to embark on a renovation, no matter they style of their space, and they suggest the two biggest things everyone should talk to their contractors about at the start of any project.

Finally, you’ll hear them share on how history has unfolded — meaning, the things they’ve discovered — when they’ve opened walls during some of their renovation projects.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) is talking with Anna Gragert, Senior Lifestyle Editor at Hunker (an home design and decor online publication).

Anna knows a thing or two about Costco. As the senior editor of lifestyle and design content, one topic that seems to captivate the Hunker audience is anything that involves Costco, everyone’s favorite wholesale store. In a nutshell, if you’re unfamiliar with Costco, this store has food, clothing, furniture, alcohol, electronics – you name it, they have it or have had it at some point. And they have it in bulk.

After all the articles that Anna has researched, written, and edited about Costco (with her team of writers), it’s safe to say Anna is an expert on all things Costco.

In this conversation, we discuss how she and her team identify what’s trending at Costco, the secrets she’s learned about how to spot deals and other perks, and whether a Costco membership is actually worth it. We also hear about the psychology behind why people spend so much time in Costco. Costco has a sneaky shopping strategy. It’s fascinating!

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Robin Games founder and CEO Jill Wilson.

If you’re wondering about the connection between mobile gaming and home design and decor, Robin Games focuses on new genre of mobile gaming called Lifestyle Gaming — beginning with their debut of PLAYHOUSE, an interior design-focused mobile game. Basically, you’re stepping into a moodboard where you get to design spaces with beautiful art and decor. Lifestylist enthusiasts, this is a game for you. And if you don’t think of yourself as a gamer, Jill and her women-led Robin Games team are here to challenge your perception of a gamer.

In this conversation, Jill discusses her passion for providing more opportunities for women in the game industry; the love of games that she’s had for her entire life; and of course, we get into how to play PLAYHOUSE: think designing spaces, getting feedback, rewards, and advancing to more projects.

If you love making spaces look beautiful, and, as Robin says, putting pretty things in pretty places, listen to our chat, and then go download the app and get to designing. It’s a fun, relaxing escape that’ll keep you inspired.

“It could even be like a passive diffuser which means just putting a few drops on a cotton ball and leaving it around the room or putting a drop on a pillow on your couch, you know, and have it diffuse that way.” — Amy Galper on ways to use essential oils in our home.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with aromatherapist expert, author, and teacher Amy Galper.

Amy is the founder of the New York Institute of Aromatherapy (the first aromatherapy school in New York City) and is a consultant in the clean beauty and wellness space. In addition to her Aromatherapy Certification Program called “Aromatherapy in Action,” Amy is the author of the “Ultimate Guide to Aromatherapy” and co-authored “Plant Powered Beauty.” It’s safe to say that Amy knows essential oils.

In this conversation, Amy talks about the power of aromatherapy and how our sense of smell has a profound effect on our health and wellbeing. We talk about the essential oils and ways to use them in the bedroom (for relaxation and sleep), the kitchen (specifically in cleaning products) and our work desks (for focus and energy).

IN THIS EPISODE WE ALSO TALK ABOUT

  • The importance of using 100% plant-based natural essential oils.
  • Aromatherapy diffusers and where (and where not) to use them.
  • Aromatherapy oils she uses according to the seasons.
  • How aromatherapy triggered her desire to simplify her life and to use plant-based ingredients (which meant detoxifying her home and decluttering).
  • How we can start paying attention to our own smelling abilities.

On this episode, we’re sharing @laurie.gunning.grossman’s chat with Rachel Moriarty in this “best of” conversation.

Rachel is an award-winning, color-loving, San Diego-based interior designer. And when we say color loving, we mean it. Take one look at her Instagram page or her website and you’ll know what we mean. She describes her style at colorfully coastal, and as she says, this either magnetizes people to her or repels them. If you don’t love color, you need not apply!

You’ll hear Rachel talk about how she works with her ADHD to tap into her creativity, the path that led her into interior design, and how The Grateful Dead plays a part in her home decor. She’s been featured on HGTV and The Design Network and does Visibility Coaching for fellow interior designers on brand strategy.

I’m thrilled to share again my chat with Jill Wintersteen in this “best of” conversation.

Jill is a spiritual teacher and founder of Spirit Daughter, an astrology and wellness brand. I personally turn to Spirit Daughter for their beautiful crystals, Moon workbooks, gratitude journals, and manifestation cards. All these products are a part of my spiritual practice.

Although we recorded this episode at the top of 2022, I wanted to share it again because Jill offers evergreen advice on how to manifest a home, why setting our vibration first thing in the morning with a gratitude practice can change our entire day, and specific crystals that can help support us in our home, offering protection, abundance, and prosperity.

Many of you in our Hunker audience are candle lovers, so we're sharing tips and tricks on how to keep your candle burning for as long as possible. You’ll also hear from Kristen Pumphrey and Tom Neuberger from P.F. Candle Co. since they are experts in this field.

With the price of candles these days, you don’t want any of it to go to waste, right? If you follow these steps, your candle with burn clean and bright, just like was born to do.

In this minisode, we cover these tips (listen to the full episode to hear more):

#1. Before you light a candle, trim the wick to a ¼ inch long.

#2. When you light a candle for the very first time, let it burn at least two hours or until the entire top layer of wax is melted all the way to the edge.

#3. Speaking of tunneling, there’s a fix for that.

#4. Don’t put debris in your candle.

#5. When you want to put out the flame, don’t actually blow it out. Use a metal dipper to dip the lit wick back into the wax.

#6. If you haven’t taken care of your candle, don’t worry – there are ways to rescue it.

#7. Some final tips for your candle care.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman chats with plant enthusiast and plant consultant Stephanie Horton, otherwise knowns as Botanical Black Girl.

Stephanie makes caring for houseplants feel so effortless. As she says, she loves plants because they’re “chill.” She has such a relaxed approach to caring for greenery.

In this conversation, Stephanie talks about how she is moving away from being a plant collector, and instead calls herself a plant enthusiast. Although, many people refer to her as a plant consultant—she helps others discover how they can get their plants to thrive and stay alive.

Here she shares how it’s important to know where your indoor plants originate from before you bring them into your home; how to deal with negative self-talk around your ability to care for plants; and the best plants to have in the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedroom.

We also talk about which plants are on her bucket list; greenery that work best in modern decor, or which ones to add when you want a lush feeling in your home; and she shares ideas on propagation — it’s something she loves doing with her plants.

If you’re feeling timid about indoor plant care or how to get started, Stephanie’s helpful advice that will make it all feel more manageable to you.

By the end of this conversation, you’ll be ready to add some new plants to your space!

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with prop stylist Robin Zachary.

In this conversation, they talk about how people can unlock their inner stylist to create beautiful vignettes and spaces at home. After many years of working in magazines where Robin learned how to do prop styling on the job, she now does it as her full-time gig.

Robin shares tips from the photo world on how we can style specific areas of our homes, including bookshelves, coffee tables, and the entryway table. She also has suggestions on where to find unique items for decor. For her, she loves the hunt.

She encourages us to see our homes as ever-changing—and that using styling techniques helps us to curate our spaces, establishing a sort of world within our homes.

You don’t have to just be interested in a career in prop styling to enjoy this episode. If you love to create beauty just for the sake of beauty (and learning styling tips on how to do that, especially in your personal spaces), you’ll love this episode.

In this episode we also talk about:

  • Understanding the hierarchy in how we arrange items in our home – and how to use the spaces around us.
  • How to use shapes for visual interest, and how to intersect objects when styling vignettes.
  • How to use levels and stacking techniques.
  • The items she loves to use when styling spaces, including flowers, magazines, and books. (Plus, she shares her favorite ways to use books for styling.)
  • How to organize and manage items we collect.
  • Why she loves mood boards – and how she teaches people ways to use mood boards. (Think mixed media.)

In this conversation, host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Feng Shui expert, Kate MacKinnon.

Kate shares how we can use Feng Shui in our bedrooms to create the most supportive spaces for our health and wellbeing. She believes that the bedroom is a place for restoration, rejuvenation, and intimacy – a sacred place where we can go to recharge. So, how we set it up is important. We talk about the ideal placement of the bed, the one color she does not recommend, ways to create a feeling of balance, and much more.

Kate says that when she was younger, she originally wanted to go into interior design, yet she took a detour into a corporate career in banking. However, in 1999 she felt something was missing and did "The Artist's Way"—and connected with the question: “When you were 7 years old, what did you think about before going to sleep at night?” She remembered that she loved rearranging people’s homes and buying furniture for her best friend’s doll house. When Feng Shui was introduced to her on a business trip to Hong Kong, she decided to study it. She’s been a Feng Shui consultant now for 21 years, and now has her own business called Everyday Feng Shui.

If you’ve wondered about Feng Shui—what it is and how it works—and especially how you can use it in your bedroom, listen to this episode.

Today on the show, I’m thrilled to share again my chat with Jennifer Pastiloff in this “best of” conversation.

Jen was the very first guest we had here on this podcast. Talking with her was everything I had hoped for: she was honest, authentic, funny, insightful, and joyful. I just loved it.

Jen is the best-selling author of “On Being Human,” and she is also a public speaker, coach, retreat leader, yoga teacher, and is the creator of the Shame Loss movement.

You’ll hear how a house-sitting experience gave Jen the permission to dream of owning her own home after living in her apartment for so long. How people on social media tried to shame her about that same apartment (but don’t worry – Jen didn’t allow that!); and how she finally manifested her beautiful place in Ojai, California. As she says, everything comes at the right time, including nice kitchen.

Please enjoy this episode. It’s one of my favorites.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with interior designer Leanne Ford.

Leanne knows about the importance of home, of having a home base to call our own. She has a deep love for her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she launched her successful career as an interior designer after gaining attention for restoring a 1907 schoolhouse and making it her home. Trust me, you’ve probably seen these pictures somewhere along the way if you look at design magazines, Pinterest, or Instagram.

Since then, she gained even more fame as an HGTV star with her brother Steve Ford on the shows "Restored by the Fords" and "Home Again With the Fords." And, what’s also exciting to Leanne right now is her partnership with Crate & Barrel who carries her first-ever collection of furniture and accessories.

In this episode, Leanne talks about her latest collaboration with Crate & Barrel and how designing furniture is such a thrill for her. As she says it’s a natural alignment between her brand and Crate & Barrel.

We talk about how she creates her gorgeous mood boards for design inspo, and why she likes to give all that insight and resources away.

She shares tips on where she likes to splurge and save with interior design choices, as well as some clever small space/rental decorating tips and hacks.

You’ll see that Leanne is pure creative inspiration: she encourages us all to be messy, to keep trying things, to keep moving forward, and to play. Don’t be afraid to fail. As she says, “the secret to my success is lots of failure.”

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman shares four ways to care for your indoor plants that are strange, surprising, unexpected, and a little bit odd. Yet, ultimately, altogether helpful.

There are anxieties about how to take care of indoor plants. And I get it — there’s so much to know. How much light does a plant need? Where to place it in your home? How much water does it need? When do you prune it? When do you fertilize it? When do you repot? I mean, help help! It’s no wonder people are nervous.

If you listen to this podcast, you may have heard me say that for many years, I told myself the story that I don’t know how to take care of plants — until a couple of years ago when I said, no more. I’m no longer telling myself that I’m a plant killer. It was time to step up. So now, I’ve taken on the identity of a person with a green-ish thumb. And, so far, so good. It’s taken time along with some trial and error to keep my indoor plants alive. And it’s ever changing and ever evolving, but I guess that goes with the territory of taking care of something that’s alive. Thank goodness kids are heartier than plants if you know what I mean!

While I’m still very much a beginner, I luckily work with experts at Hunker who know the ins and outs of caring for plants. So, keep listening for four of my favorite slightly wacky ways to keep your plants alive and thriving.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with animal communicator Nikki Vasconez.

Says Laurie: “I reached out to Nikki because I wanted to talk about the ways we can communicate with our pets to create harmonious spaces for them and to make the lives of our pets as lovely as possible. We both agree pets are part of our home … they make everything perfect.”

Nikki believes that everyone can communicate with our pets all the time. That it’s not a gift, it’s a skill. As she says, it’s all within us, it’s just a matter of believing it. Believing that it’s possible.

She shares tips on how we can interpret what our pets are trying to tell us; the common throughline that all dogs or all cats want in their living spaces; how to help animals change their routines (like sleeping in our beds), and suggestions on how people can add a new pet to the home when we already have a pet at home or how to prepare them for when a new baby is expected.

Nikki even talks about our pets who have passed away and how communicating with them has changed her perception of death. If you’ve lost a pet, I think you’ll really love hearing what she has to say. It’s sweet, it’s touching, and there’s so much more behind the scenes.

If you want to transform your connection with your pet, this is an episode you’ll want to listen to all the way through.

Kimo, who also calls himself a light seer, is a multi-sensory psychic medium. As he explains, he’s able to see multidimensionally through shape, sound, lineage, and cultural practices. When working with people he says that he can connect them with their guides and guardians through his gift of sight as well as his intuitive and psychic senses.

Growing up within an intuitive family in Hawaii, he discovered his gifts at the age of three when he started speaking to Spirit. And it grew from there.

In this conversation, Kimo talks about how he works with clients in designing their spaces. It involves timelines, future possibilities, and working with a client’s spirit team. He designs spaces contingent on a certain outcome. This most likely is unlike anything you’ve heard before!

We talk about how the items we bring into our homes – especially vintage or secondhand items – have an energy, a “voice.” And, even how our homes, the actual buildings, have spirit energy. (Not to mention the actual spirits who are living in our homes!)

Regarding general design elements, he shares that to elevate the frequency in our homes, he prescribes “change.” Change in a paint color, new pillows, new textures, and new smells. And he says that once someone steps into the idea of change we’re removing ourselves from old energetic cords … and then, anything we do is easy.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with Alex Caiola, otherwise known as The High Priestess of Brooklyn.

Alex is a magical analyst, astrologer, and intuitive advisor.

When working with clients, whether one-on-one or even with startup companies, Alex uses different modalities such as astrology, tarot, connecting with guides, and being in touch with source energy.

She believes that being psychic is a skill set that we all have — it’s a muscle that we can flex and practice. As she says, astrology will meet you wherever you are.

In this conversation, we talk about how to use astrology, more specifically areas of our birth charts, to amplify, support, and decorate our homes and personal spaces. We spend some time focused on two areas of the birth chart structure: the fourth house — which relates to the home and family — and the sixth house, which is the house of our day-to-day environment and routines. We also touch upon how it’s interesting to know which sign and house Venus is in, which speaks to our unique decoration style.

A quick note about birth charts — depicted as a wheel with 12 houses, birth charts are essentially your personal blueprint of where the planets were placed the moment you were born. If you haven't cast your birth chart yet, you can go to Astrostyle.com, Astro-charts.com, astro.com or any online chart generator to access your birth chart and learn more.

Alex also shares some general things people can add to their homes to make the space feel good, including spring-cleaning rituals to clear the space — turns out, it’s a spiritual thing to clean!

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast, host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Walaa, a color therapist, founder of Color-Ways, and author of the book, “Heal Yourself With Color.”

Walaa’s work is dedicated to using color energy to help us understand ourselves better, and what we need to thrive and grow.

Through her one-on-on color code activation sessions, she helps people understand the vibration of color and their emotional connection to it, including how their subconscious relates to it. She shares that we can use color to our benefit: to understand ourselves better and create better environments for ourselves.

In addition to her one-on-one mentoring work, she has a background in interior design, which enables her to help people with their spaces as well.

As she says, our homes have a frequency that we’re constantly conversing with – and colors help us know which parts of our homes need boosting to support our wellbeing and energy. She shows people how to use color frequencies to balance and release for them to have more space to bring in all the things they want.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast we have Natalie Miles, a channeler, psychic medium, author, and podcast host.

As a channeler, Natalie connects with Spirit Guides — or whatever label you relate to, such as the Universe, Higher Power, Source, and so forth. She connects to the collective energy and shares whatever messages want to be shared for us as individuals or as a collective.

In this conversation, Natalie shares how she believes that everyone is intuitive and that we’re all receiving intuitive guidance every day. This is what her work is all about: helping people tap into their intuition.

Natalie shares how she’s moved her homes when she’s received intuitive hits from her Spirit Guides — and how she’s used a paper map and pendulum to help find aligned places to live.

Natalie also says she can tune into people’s homes — she gets shown the spirit of the energy in a home. She can also tune into the land and see how or why it needs to be cleared or attended to. She even gets messages about where people should place furniture, decor, or plants (so be very considerate about where you move them because it turns out that our plants have opinions!). And if you’re someone who likes to buy thrifted or second-hand furniture, you should be energy clearing those pieces before you bring them into your space.

We also talk about how we’re in an eclipse season right now and what that means. Think: big changes, transformations, and expect the unexpected. She says that between now and 2026/2027, it’s a powerful reset time, for our planet and for ourselves.

Alexandra Dorda is the founder of Kasama, a small batch rum created in the Philippines and distilled in Poland.

Alexandra shares how as a person raised in three different cultures on three different continents, “being home” is a fluid concept. For her, it’s not a place – it’s feeling at home with yourself.

She talks about how she travels often because of her work, but as she said, she can’t stay still. She needs to move to feel comfortable and happy. And while she doesn’t have that one place she feels she can call her own, she does feel as though she could live almost anywhere in the world. (She’s been to around 70 countries!)

Entrepreneurship is in her blood – both her parents are entrepreneurs and have always been interested in charting their own path. This spirit was transferred to her – she’s always wanted to have her own business. And so, Kasama rum was born.

Kasama means “together” or “companion” in Filipino. Alexandra wanted to build a brand around (and pay homage to) the Philippines, so she could celebrate what’s special about this place, her mother’s country. She also talks about Poland, her father’s country (he is the co-founder of polish vodkas Chopin and Belvedere), and how Poland is part of her rum as well.

And we talk about her family in Poland and the impact of the war in neighboring Ukraine. (She was in Poland when the war broke out.) She shares how this has changed her relationship to both her home and her physical belongings – and how this sobering situation makes you reevaluate what matters in your life.

Haley Weidenbaum is an interior designer and co-founder of Everhem, a company that creates customized window treatments.

In this conversation, Haley shares how she started Everhem with her husband, Adam, after an aha moment that led her to realize she wanted to put all her focus on designing for just one part of the home: window treatments. As she says, it’s this part of the design process that’s often an afterthought.

And though her focus is on her business, Haley says that interior design is still at her core – it’s how she communicates and how she makes herself feel happy. Every few weeks she says she likes to reorganize accessories and items in her home to freshen up the space.

Haley also shares how she’s always had a deep interest in hotels – she was infatuated with them as a child – and how after college she worked in hotels, which led her into interior design, which then led to her into starting Everhem. You’ll see how every stop on her career journey has unfolded into the next.

Anita, who is also a licensed therapist, says that she uses “the psychology of intention to design functional homes where we can deeply connect.” Basically, she’s making therapeutic homes a thing.

In this conversation, Anita shares how she toggles between her two professions when working with clients, and how the professions complement each other.

She believes each of us have different narratives and intentions for how—and what—we want our home to be. And so, she teaches her clients how to identify zones in their spaces to create that intentionality and help it come alive.

Anita shares how she’s passionate about how therapy helps people to learn how to live authentically—and now as an interior designer, she has an opportunity to show people how to do it at home in a tangible way using home decor and design.

It’s a great conversation about the intention of design and how we set up our spaces.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast, we have Medina Grillo, an interiors and DIY blogger behind Grillo Designs, and author of “Home Sweet Rented Home.” As Medina describes herself, she is an “IKEA-loving-upcycling-junkie-DIY-passionate-home-decor-crazy momma and wife.”

Medina, who lives in England, is an advocate for renters who want to beautify their rental spaces. (She also started a video series on Instagram called “How I Rent.”) As she shares, she believes that renters are “the underdogs in interior design,” and that people should put a stamp on their rented home.

As a long-time renter herself, she says that by creating a home that reflects who you, it really does help your mental health in a positive way. Plus, who doesn’t want to live in a lovely space?

In this conversation, Medina talks about her favorite upgrades and DIY projects that she’s done to her own rented home; how she deals with negative comments from people who think she’s wasting money when she does these design upgrades; and how people can work within their budget and with their landlord to make changes to their rented space.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast we feature Etsy’s in-house trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson.

Dayna (who is also a judge on NBC’s “Making It,” a crafting competition hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman) has been at Etsy since the early days — over 10 years.

As Etsy’s trend expert, she’s passionate about connecting shoppers with products that complement their personal style. She keeps her finger on the pulse … and that’s no small feat with 5.2 million business owners on Etsy! But working with the sellers is what she loves.

Dayna believes that every everyone is creative, even those who say they don’t have a creative bone in their body. She encourages us to reconnect to when we were children and to remember what made us happy when we were younger. And then, we can bring a piece of that into our home spaces.

We talk about home trends, how she created her position at Etsy, her list of personal favorites, including books, home scents, and Etsy finds — and we also hear about her experience in becoming a landowner for the first time, including the powerful story behind buying this special piece of land. Today on the show we have Gladys Tay, a designer and vintage arts dealer.

Gladys loves to look for things that are uncommon, and bring life andcharacter into a home.

It took her awhile to admit she has an eye for design because she didn’t study it in school, however design has always been a natural and intuitive part of her. She was encouraged by her dad to explore her creativity, and he taught her that it’s okay to be different, to break the rules, and not to conform to the norm.

Gladys encourages people to take risks and to keep an open mind — that when it comes to design it’s okay to make mistakes. The more you experiment with your own style, the better you get.

Her personality is as bright and colorful as her style — and her design philosophy is one I think that many of us can get on board with: do whatever you want, play, and don’t worry about the trends.

They launched with just one product – the Original Turmeric Latte Blend – out of their one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. And as their company has grown, so has their space – they have since moved to a new home in upstate New York.

We talk about the 1865 house she and Issey recently bought in Hudson Valley; their process in decorating their home; and how gardening is a point of inspiration for her, teaching her about tenacity and perseverance, which she then applies in other areas of her life.

If you’re a candle or incense lover, chances are you have one of their products in your home right now. (Oh, and…they’re married.)

Kristen and Tom are DIY to the core: if they don’t know something, they figure it out. (Thanks, Google!) On the Being Home With Hunker podcast we feature Sarah Sherman Samuel, a designer whose work includes interiors, textiles, furniture, and artwork. She’s been featured in Architectural Digest, Sunset Magazine, Dwell, and Domino, to name a few. Maybe you were among the many who swooned when you saw the redesign of actress Mandy Moore’s house? Yes, that was Sarah’s work.

Sarah recently launched three new websites: Sarah Sherman Samuel (her design portfolio); SSS Edit (a redesign of her personal blog); and SSS Atelier (a virtual gallery of her plaster artwork, large scale silk screen tapestries, and vintage finds – all for sale.)

She is a designer and artist who is happiest when she’s creating – and sees the beauty in imperfection. As she says, she likes her house and her furniture to have “a little bit of wonk.”

Her work has been featured in publications such as Vision Magazine and San Diego Home and Garden Lifestyle, and she has also been featured on HGTV and The Design Network. And in addition to her design work, she also teaches Visibility Coaching to other interior designers on digital strategy and positioning.

Rachel loves to celebrate color (in her work and her personal style) and her multicultural roots. They go hand-in-hand. She is an example of what finding joy in our work looks like. Her style is colorfully coastal, and as she says, this either magnetizes people to her or repels them. If you don’t like color, you need not apply. She describes herself as an introvert in extrovert clothing and has had a career path where every job along the way has been preparing her for the work she does as an interior designer. Rachel also shares how she prepares herself daily to tap into her creativity – and how she works with her ADHD to get into that creative space.

As she says, the more fun she has, the better it gets: the better her projects get, and the better her clients get. If you want to smile today, listen to the podcast just to hear her infectious laugh. We dare you not to feel inspired after hearing this conversation.

Dabito, an interior designer and founder of Old Brand New, a studio that specializes in design, brand partnerships, and art direction.

Dabito started his interior design career in blogging, where he has been able to put all his talents to work, including photography, printmaking, and art. He has a passion for thrifting and believes that decorating is really about celebrating your life.

As he says, “fill [your home] with all the things you love.” He believes that’s what “makes a space unique, it’s the weird things that really tell a story.”

Dabio shares how an IKEA catalog became his decor bible at a young age, how growing up in a three-bedroom home with three generations shaped his journey to becoming a designer, and how decorating is really about celebrating your life.

Today on the show we have Kristina Hollinger, a feng shui expert and author.

In this episode, Kristina shares ideas on how to use the ancient Chinese art and philosophy of feng shui in your home to attract abundance in every area of your life, including your career, love, helpful people, and wealth.

10 years ago, Kristina started using feng shui after wanting to spruce up her apartment. And after decorating and arranging furniture in her space using feng shui adjustments, she says the months after that were a whirlwind of where she found out she and her husband were expecting their first baby, her husband’s career advanced, and she started to feel more fulfilled in her day-to-day life. So, what did she do? She got certified as a Feng Shui Consultant at the Feng Shui School of Chicago.

In our conversation, we talk about the top three spaces she recommends people focus on first when beginning feng shui; she talks about how 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, and what that means for us; plus, she has a really easy feng shui cure everyone can do at home to attract abundance into our lives.

As she says, it’s her “intention to teach you about the magic of feng shui so that you too can design the life you deserve.”

Today on the show we have Ariel Kaye, founder of Parachute, a bedding brand that specializes in what’s soft and cozy. Think: bedding, towels, robes, slippers, pillows, and blankets, as well as other home decor items.

Ariel believes that since our homes are our personal spaces, we should be aware of the things that we care about, and to not get so caught up in the dos and don’ts of design trends. We should think about the purpose of the room and design our home to support our lifestyle and what brings us joy.

On the Being Home with Hunker podcast, Ariel discusses why she decided to create Parachute, and the importance of setting up our bedroom as a sanctuary. She also talks about how her love for entertaining turned into a love for creating intentional spaces, and how small and accessible edits to our spaces can make things feel fresh.

Hi, I’m Laurie Gunning Grossman, editorial director at Hunker. Welcome to our 2021 end of year episode. We’re featuring 13 quotes about home from our favorite episodes… which, let’s face it, is all of our episodes since we just launched this past September.

Before I share these ideas and inspiration, I want to convey my gratitude to you, dear listeners, for tuning into this podcast.

It’s Hunker’s mission to empower you to create spaces that express who you are, shows off your unique style, and makes your life happier and more productive.

And… It’s my personal mission to help people feel like they belong, and home is where it begins.

The theme that’s a thread running through these conversations is that your home is the place where you have the opportunity to define who you are and how you want to live. And hopefully, that’s what you’re able to do or are committed to doing in the new year. Follow your own design compass. No one else gets to define you – only you.

So, allow me to share with you some practical ideas and some insightful takeaways from the podcast this year.

On the podcast, we talk about their direct-to-consumer dinnerware brand. Leeway Home offers all-in-one kits for every day eating, helping people set their table at whatever stage they are in life. Think: ceramics, flatware, and glassware.

Today on the show we have Hilton Carter. Hilton is an interior stylist, a plant stylist, and now an interior designer with the renovation of his new home

You may know him from his three design books on plants (“Wild at Home,” “Wild Interiors,” and “Wild Creations.” Or perhaps you’ve taken one of his plant workshops with Magnolia, or purchased one of his products at Target. Yes, he’s busy, but who’s going to stop him? Not us, because we love how he styles and designs with greenery.

In this conversation, Hilton shares how he started on his career path with plants. (Hint: It wasn’t what he had planned.) He also shares with us the choices that he and his wife made in the renovation of their home, where every detail has a purpose. He talks about the loves in his life, including his wife, his new baby daughter, his hometown of Baltimore, and of course, plants. There’s so much gratitude in this conversation.

Today on the show we have Eve Epstein, GM and Editor in Chief of Hunker. Yes, this Hunker. The brand behind this podcast.

Eve has been at the helm of Hunker since its inception in 2017, leading the brand’s voice, vision, and heart from the get-go. She has a deep appreciation for design, creativity, and expression. From her rich career in the world of content (including her role as the Editor in Chief at DailyCandy – if you know, you know) to authoring two books, Eve is a true story-teller. And at Hunker, we are talking about how our homes tell the story of our lives.

In this conversation, Eve shares a bit about her own story, from spending summers in Japan with the mother (and how that formed her design taste) to her love for creating DIYs for her personal space to the progressive way she and her beau set up their home life. Of course, we dig into the world of Hunker, too.

As you’ll hear in this conversation, she uses the power of social media and crowdfunding to help raise funds for others every day. One big focus of the foundation during this time of year is The Wishlist Angel’s Project. Today on the show we have Nina Freudenberger, an interior designer, author, and founder of Freudenberger Design Studio.

Nina is not a fixed interior designer—she loves all aspects of creativity and business. After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA and a Bachelor’s of Architecture, Nina “fell” into interior design. And it’s a career that she feels she well suited for.

In this conversation we talk about how her curiosity in the ways people create their own worlds at home led her to writing her design books, Surf Shack and Bibliostyle. She shares her method for writing her books; how her design style shifted after moving to California from New York; her rules around lighting in the home; the importance of authenticity in materials; and her experience designing two California hotels.

Today on the show we have Shavonda Gardner, founder of SG Style, a design and lifestyle blog.

She was on the path to have a long career in the military until she made the pivot into the world of interior design. One driving factor in her decision to start a design blog was the fact that she didn’t see herself represented in that world. She has a strong affinity for color, for going bold, and for making the most of your space, no matter the size. (Although, she has big love for small spaces.)

In this conversation, we talk about the steps she took to pivot from a career in the military into becoming an interior designer – and the pivot she had to then make again after the recession. The story that her home, The Cottage Bungalow, tells about her and her family. How she and her family lived through their kitchen renovation, while living in their home. And, the sweet story surrounding who was (and still is) her biggest influence and inspiration behind the design of her kitchen.

Today on the show we have the founders of Very Gay Paint: Nicholas Scheppard and Jenson Titus. They are comedians, boyfriends, and – as they call themselves – accidental muralists.

During the height of the pandemic, live performances were put on hold. So, the comedians, who are also a couple, dealt with the long hours of lockdown by learning how to paint murals on their apartment walls. Before they knew it, they had new skills as muralists, a new company, and a fast-growing social media presence that is a mix of their mural designs along with their laugh out loud videos and Instagram posts. Joy is what they are ultimately creating.

In this conversation, we talk about how they apply their clown skills to their design work, how their hybrid comedy-painting Instagram account has garnered over 94 thousand followers in a little over a year, and also, how queerness is central to their brand. If you don’t know about Very Gay Paint, it’s time you do.

Or perhaps, you remember him as a co-host and judge from Ellen’s Design Challenge, a furniture design competition on HGTV, from executive producer, Ellen DeGeneres. (Who also happens to be one of Cliff’s long-standing clients.)

In this episode, we learn how a house-sitting experience planted a seed giving her permission to dream; how Jen lost her entire income at the beginning of the pandemic, and then found magic through it; the concept of “being brave;” her happy place (and how it was meant to be – even though this isn’t something she says anymore); and what being home means to her.

Pastiloff is also a public speaker, coach, and creator of the Shame Loss Movement. She leads retreats and yoga classes, both online and in person. To learn more, visit:
