The term Xennial has come to fashion in the last 10 years or so. It's been used to apply to people born betweeen 1976-84. How the inauguration of Ronald Reagan in 1981 started the change between GenX kids and Millennial and how parents fully started paying more attention to their children by 1984.

William Friedkin's Cruising is a snapshot, believe it or not, of 1980. Before the fall. A surreal police procedural and pseudo American Giallo about a serial killer in the gay leather community sparked condemnation and outrage during the production. It has been reappraised since but what makes that movie so off puttingly effective?
Jeff talks about that, his own experience with the movie, and how we need to see these snapshots as a gay community in order to understand how we got from there to here.

It's spooky month on the GenX Show. It's not like we need an excuse to talk about horror films but why not, right? In that spirit Jeff takes on the 2008 Canadian Zombie/Virus film Pontypool. A movie about the loss of self, the loss of communication and the loss of purpose cloaked in the blood of virus. Special shout out to Stephen McHattie for putting on a great performance as Grant Mazzy in this film. He carries this big time.

What was going on with the Boomer generation and how their rejection of their parents oppressive perfect family conservatism led to a divorced/professional household with no one around.

Dune's lasting legacy, however, is it spurred David Lynch on to go make the movies he was always meant to make. Gritty, weird neo-noir films starring Kyle MacLaughlin. How in failing on such a large scale led to maybe his best movie ... Blue Velvet.

In 1979 Dario Argento's cut of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead was a huge hit in Italy. To capitalize, Italian producers were looking to make a quick sequel. In comes Lucio Fulci and the most surreal, over the top, grotesque zombie movie of its era was born.
We also talk about the "Italian ripoff cinema" era and how gloriously bad it was. From the Bronx Warriors to The Last Shark. Italian cinema at its most absurd.

In 1979 Greek Egyptian Oviido Assinitis gave us the craziest Italian movie of the 1970's, The Visitor. A combination of Star Wars, The Omen and Italian Giallo woven into a batsh*t crazy tapestry. It features some of the greats of old Hollywood in John Huston, Shelley Winters, Glenn Ford, Mel Ferer and even director Sam Peckinhpah.
That doesn't make the movie any less crazy. In the latest GenX Show Jeff talks about this undescribably film and why it is worth you watching.

Netflix has been an issue in Hollywood. On the latest GenX Show Jeff talks about the history of B Movies, their evolution, and how Netflix (specifically) has hollowed out the 'bread and butter' B movies that sustained Hollywood. It's not that people don't go to movie theaters anymore (which is sorta true) it's that what's available on streaming is either big budget extravaganzas or utter crap C movies.
Like the analytics boom in the NBA hollowed out the mid-range, the advent of analytic driven streaming has hollowed out the middle in Hollyood. The great B movie decline.

On the latest GenX Show Jeff talks about the worst era for horror movies, the early 1990's. How a collision of several circumstances from the prevalence of AIDS in the public consciousness to the rise of the Erotic Thriller combined to dampen the both the public's appetite for Horror and depress the quality of what was coming out at the time.
However there were exceptions and, as Jeff points out, those exceptions pointed the way toward the revival that happened in the late 1990's.

40 years ago, in 1983, Stephen King's novel Christine was released (April) a mere seven months later (November) John Carpenter's version of that movie was released in theaters. On the latest GenX Show, Jeff and Magnus discuss both the book and movie, the 'coked out King" era, Carpenter's terrible 1982 and how both the book and movie are the same and completely different.

John Carpenter and Debra Hill never wanted to do any Halloween sequels. After, essentially, being bullied into doing Halloween 2 ... the pair were left with a choice to continue. The choice that was made: Turn the Halloween series into an anthology series with each movie a differnet story on Halloween night.
The legacy of Halloween 3 might just be that, despite failing initially, Carpenter, Hill and director Tommy Lee Wallace were correct in wanting to anthologize the series instead of making it a Michael Myers slasher fest. As sequel after shitty sequel followed it's become more and more clear that the trio was correct.

There have been many attempts to do HP Lovecraft style Cosmic Horror in the past both in games and in movies. The 1990's gave us grunge, mid-tempo jangly guitar based pop songs, Friends ... Frasier ... Seinfeld and the big time classic rock reunion. On the latest GenX Show Jeff talks about the heavily anticipated reunion of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. A union that produced a good unplugged live concert with an Egyptian orchestra called Unledded, a massive year long tour with an orchestra and disappointingly a half baked album that needed more over everything ... Walking into Clarksdale in 1998. An album that could and should have been better than it was.

1988 was THE year Jeff became a horror movie fan. Chief among those movies Jeff adored was the camp horror classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Don't devote a ton of brain power to trying to "break down" the meaning of this movie. It does what it says on the tin, as the British might say. Still one of his favorite movies of all time.

Back to the Egg in 1979 is Paul McCartney and Wings last hurrah as a "band". After multiple lineup changes, cancelled tours and a brand new multi-million dollar contract with Columbia records Wings recorded their last in a Scottish castle. What came out was a very New Wave influenced album that was reviled by critics and disliked by McCartney himself despite going platinum.
On the latest GenX Show Jeff talks about one of his favorite and most misunderstood Paul McCartney albums and how a drug bust in Japan ended the band Wings.

The 1984 Richard Franklin directed movie, Cloak and Dagger from 1984 is on the surface a typical cold war kids movie about a kid who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dig deeper, however and you see that it's really about a kid who's dad is his hero.
Featuring wonderful performances from Henry Thomas and Dabney Coleman (in maybe his best acting performance) it's a kids movie with tons of heart. About fractured family, about connecting with your kid, about seeing what you shouldn't and getting caught up in international intrigue. It has it all. Well worth a watch before you listen to the podcast.

Jeff is back with another Ray Bradbury special. This time it's a Jonathan Pryce, Jason Robards and Pam Grier led movie about a father trying to be a good dad despite feeling old ... oh and an evil, borderline satanic carnival that is coming to town to make you a part of their exhibit. No big deal. Dark Disney at is purest and most meddling. Something Wicked this Way Comes is a great story with great acting that was sorta undermined by Disney's lack of confidence.

1982's The Electric Grandmother, based on a teleplay/Twilight Zone episode/Short Story from Ray Bradbury, is a curiosity from the golden era of childrens movies/enternatinment in the early 80's. A long-forgotten TV project that gave Jeff distinct memories unlike any other. Strange how an otherwise throw away TV movie can stay with you. The early 80s were quite a different time. Jeff talks about Bradbury, the themes of the story, and more in the latest GenX Show!

Krull was a movie that was gorgeous. Set design, score, cinematogrophy, lighting and ambition to spare. Unfortunately it was let down by clunky and insipid dialoge, and excruciating pacing. This movie SHOULD have been better than it was but ... just wasn't. On the latest GenX Show Deep Dive, Jeff talks about this Peter Yates movies and wonders if this movie deserves re-appraisal or if it was too big for it's decidedly thin script.

What came about was the darkest American fairy tale in keeping with the spirit of the author but failed at the box office in a big way. Jeff takes you on a journey through the extremely dark underbelly of America's rural farms and sees Christopher Walken and Sean Penn in At Close Range (1986). A brutal, extremely dark yet eerily melancholy movie about family, crime and having a sadistic yet charming father/crime boss. This movie contains potentially Walken's best performance and Penn is at his early years peak.
Also, this movie is more famous for containing maybe Madonna's best song, Live to Tell. It plays in a slowed down instrumental version throughout the movie. This is one of a kind rural neo-noir.

Jeff and Magnus team up to talk about the 1984 Christmas slasher classic...Silent Night Deadly Night from 1984. Is the controversy this movie engendered legit, or was it just angst about the anti-catholic sentiment in the movie? Jeff and Magnus do a deep dive and give their theories.
Also, the VHS boom of the mid 1980's allowed those who wanted to see these movies access in a unique time that has yet to be replicated. The VHS revolution allowed movies like Silent Night Deadly Night to have a life outside of the movie theater.
