Coffee with a friend is like capturing joy in a cup. Welcome to the Coffee with Genny B Podcast. Hosted by Genny B, a lover of all things coffee. Each week Genny will chat about connecting over coffee, what brings her joy and everything in between. A lot can happen over coffee so grab a cup, sit back and enjoy!
In this episode, Genny spoke about being inspired by the song, “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith to talk about walking. And speaking of inspiration, she shared the story of how Aerosmith was inspired to write this song.
Genny shared that according to vocabulary.com, there are 25 ways of walking such as hiking, strolling, and striding. And, depending on the type of walking you do, it will determine the different types of benefits that you can experience. For instance, the physical benefits of walking include strengthening bones and muscles; improving muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness; maintaining healthy body weight; and aiding in digestion. And even though it is recommended you walk a minimum of 10,000 steps per day, just walking 30 minutes per day will still give you all those physical benefits.
In addition, walking can help with mental and emotional health by reducing stress and anxiety, lifting your spirits, and boosting your energy. As well, walking releases endorphins that make you feel good and increases serotonin, which makes you feel happy.

“As a roaster, you need to have a passion for coffee, a passion for people, and immense pride in your work.” - Adri Roux, Owner of Rouxbean Coffee Roastery
In this episode, Genny spoke with Matthew Sieben, owner of Railway Roasters. A chartered professional accountant and partnerships manager with Gustin Quon, he discovered his passion for coffee on a road trip driving a school friend to Victoria. Along the way, they stopped in Calgary and stayed at an Airbnb. The next morning, the owner took them to her favourite coffee shop, which was Phil & Sebastian, located in downtown Calgary. It was the first time Matthew had coffee that was “made with intention” and that was “pretty special”, which inspired him to want to know more about “this black bean water soup that we call coffee.”
After passing his CPA exam, he wanted to learn more about the roasting process so he took a course at Mill City Roasters in Minneapolis. And that started him on his “passion project” to create Railway Roasters, which is an homage to his family’s involvement with the CNN railway.
Matthew is participating as a vendor at the MB Food Fest on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the St Norbert Art Centre.

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.”
Sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand mountaineer and explorer, who along with his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, were the first to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1954.
In this episode, Genny spoke about the book, “The Mountain is You” by Brianna Wiest. She discovered an excerpt of Brianna’s book posted on Instagram and was so taken by her words that she wanted to buy a copy of her book. However, Genny chose instead to listen to the book on Audible during her morning walks.
In that book, Brianna spoke about self-sabotage; how we use coping mechanisms such as perfectionism, pride, or overthinking to deal with our unmet needs or suppressed emotions. It’s about identifying your behaviours to try and deal with those unmet needs without relying on those coping mechanisms. And it’s about paying attention to those triggers that produce feelings of anger, sadness, shame, or embarrassment that can stop us from fulfilling our goals.
Genny spoke about why people climb mountains. It’s because it is there. It’s a challenge and presents great difficulties. Humans typically delight in overcoming obstacles. And, to use climbing a mountain as a metaphor for life, it requires endurance, persistence and willpower.
To close, Genny encourages us to climb that mountain. It will be hard but it can change your life.

“All around you are spirits, child. They live in the earth, the water, the sky. If you listen, they will guide you.”
Grandmother Willow, Pocahontas
In this episode, Genny shared her fascination with the spirit world. She referenced the movie, “Ghost” and that Whoopi Goldberg played a medium who could see and talk with spirits. Genny also spoke about the movie, “The Sixth Sense”, and spoke about her experience using the Ouija Board as a teenager.
To learn more about the spirit world, the after life, or whatever you want to call it, Genny spoke with Christine Colwell, co-owner of Energy Oasis Wellness Therapy (with Irene Wagner and Karen Small). A Certified Energy Practitioner, teacher and medium…who is also a finance and accounting professional, Christine’s passion is integrating and teaching a variety of energy healing modalities and how to apply these in everyday life.
Genny first met Christine when she booked a mini medium session on Zoom, where she was able to connect with her mom’s spirit, and she was eager to learn more about it. Christine spoke about Reiki and energy healing; about how spirits and angels are all around us as our guides. Christine also shared her experience as a child, having that connection with the spirit world, and how that has shaped her life over the years.

When you meet someone for the first time, you want to know who they are. So, your first questions might be, “So, tell me about yourself.” To which you might respond by telling them what you do for a living, share that you’re married and/or have kids and/or have grandchildren, and perhaps your hobbies. They might ask further questions or ask to clarify something, and this could go on talking about different aspects of who you are.
In episode 111, Genny shared that this is not really all of who you are. Because there is more to you than what you present to the world; what they see. This info you share is great to know, and it helps others understand who you are. But if you want to know more about yourself; and learn about what drives you, why you act a certain way, why you respond in a certain way, and why some things come so naturally to you, Genny shared there are different modalities, programs, and tests that will give you a better understanding of who you are.
She mentioned Astrology, the Enneagram, Myers-Briggs and the 16 Personalities, Human Design, and Clifton Strengths, and proceeded to share what she learned about herself.
Genny stressed that most of the info you find in a few of these modalities are more generic; that could apply to basically anyone. However, with Human Design and Clifton Strengths, it is truer to who you are. Regardless, it’s something that is fun and enjoyable, and interesting to learn about yourself.

“It’s not you, it’s me.” That’s a common break-up line used by someone wishing to end a relationship. Instead of telling the other person how they feel and why they need to break up, they are showing compassion for the other person, by breaking it to them gently and taking the blame or taking responsibility for their part in the break-up.
In episode 109, Genny shared why she spoke about breaking up with someone, and suggested that perhaps we should break up with that part of ourselves; the part that isn’t working for us; that isn’t making us happy. She shared that when we do something wrong, we can be quick to blame ourselves, to berate ourselves, and basically, be mean to ourselves. We’re also quick to judge. Genny continued to say that sometimes, we not only overthink about a situation – assuming that something is wrong – but we start to ruminate, to internalize, even to project on something that we think might happen, and then we start to spiral out of control.
Genny shared that she went through a similar situation and reached out to her brother Ed, who not only managed to talk her down and explain to her what was happening, but suggested that she read the book, “Self-Compassion” – The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself - by Kristin Neff. This book made a huge difference to Genny and gave her the perspective to talk about it in this episode.

If you googled “body book”, the top response would be “The Body Book” by Cameron Diaz. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a plethora of books about the body including “When the Body Says No” by Gabor Mate, “The Body” by Bill Bryson, “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel Van Der Kolk, and “The Body Knows” by Caroline Sutherland.
In episode 106, Genny shared what each of these books can offer you in terms of information and guidance. In particular, she mentioned that the book by Gabor Mate talks about the cost of hidden stress, and spoke about how stress had affected her skin. And the book by Caroline Sutherland tells us how to tune into your body, which is something she wishes she had done and shared how she hyper extended her left knee.
Genny shared that the body knows before the mind does, and shared that the mind has about 80,000 thoughts per day, about anything and everything, that are mostly useless and repetitive. However, the body gives us information all the time but the mind overrides those signals. It’s important that you listen to your body, not your mind.
Genny offered suggestions on how you can tune into your body by doing a body scan when you first wake up or throughout the day, to check for any aches or pains, or areas of concern. As well, she suggested you ask yourself how you’re feeling, as your emotions can affect how your body responds.

Could you tell your story in 20 seconds? Hmmm…that doesn’t seem like a lot of time. But what if you had 400 seconds? Could you tell your story then?
In episode 105, Genny spoke with Justin Ladia, organizer of PechaKucha Winnipeg, the Manitoba chapter organized by the Graphic Designers of Canada. Created in Japan in 2003, PechaKucha (pronounced pechakcha) is Japanese for “chit chat”. It’s a free online and offline global storytelling platform that celebrates people, passion and creative thought. Through a 20 x 20 presentation format, a slide show of 20 images auto advances after 20 seconds in a non-stop presentation of 400 seconds.
A graphic designer with Tetro Design, a community organizer, a puzzle hunt hobbyist (and host of The Extraction – a podcast about puzzles), and one of the organizers of Ai-Kon, Winnipeg’s largest anime convention, Justin has organized PechaKucia since 2017. He started out by doing one of his own presentations and loved it so much that he wanted to become more involved.
Genny will be presenting at the next installment of PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 47 that will be held on Wednesday, June 28 at 7 pm at the Park Theatre Winnipeg. She’ll be sharing her story of Coffee with Genny B!

This episode is celebrating the 2nd anniversary of the Coffee with Genny B podcast. What started for Genny in the spring of 2021 as a “let’s try this podcast thing and see where it goes” is now a testament to how she has grown as a podcaster and interviewer, how she has found her voice, and how committed she is to continuing on her journey.
In this episode, Genny spoke with Matt Cundill, owner/operator of The Sound Off Media Company, an audio solutions group that provides voice overs, radio programming strategies, and podcast solutions. Matt also launches and manages podcasts for businesses, entrepreneurs, and performers.
Genny spoke about her experience working with Matt and his team; how that helped her continue to hone her craft and learn more about the podcast business; and how that allows her to do what she does best: tell her story and connect with her audience, and have meaningful conversations with her guests.
With over 25 years in radio, Matt shared a few of his experiences from those radio days, and shared how and why he transitioned into podcasting. He spoke about how podcasting has changed over the years, that anyone can do a podcast, and stressed the importance of just being yourself and sharing your voice.
As well, Matt is the host of three podcasts including the Sound Off Podcast, You May Also Like, and the Podcast Super Friends.

Pets and their owners share a special bond, and in fact, over 90% of pet owners regard their dogs and cats as part of the family and call them their “fur babies”. At the end of the day, your pet can be one of the most loyal friends you will ever have, and giving them the love and attention that you’d give to a parent, sibling or child benefit everyone.
In episode 76, Genny shared the story of their beloved dachshund Jersey. How loveable and playful she was, and that she had this great personality. She shared some of the traits associated with doxies or wiener dogs, as they are sometimes referred to because of their long body, such as stubbornness, loyalty and protective nature, and relayed how Jersey demonstrated those traits.
Genny also shared that her daughter Crystal was Jersey’s “mom” and got her as a pup. She was Crystal’s fur baby, her companion, and her pal. The love between the two was something special. When Crystal and her partner Brent started working long days, they realized that Jersey couldn’t stay home all day by herself, so they asked Genny and her husband Frank if they would look after Jersey. Of course, they said yes and welcomed their “grand fur baby” into their home.
Genny spoke about all the special moments they experienced with Jersey, about Jersey’s special bond with Frank, and how everyone loved Jersey and how she loved everyone. She also shared the tough decision that the family made to let Jersey travel across the Rainbow Bridge.

Coffee goes well with...well, with almost everything but especially with pastries! Croissants, danishes, cinnamon buns, macarons...the list goes on!
In episode 75, Genny spoke with Alix Loiselle, owner of La Belle Baguette bakery. One of her favourite bakeries, Genny shared a few of her fav pastries such as his Almond Croissant (Alix mentioned it’s his #1 seller at the beginning!) and his seasonal croissants such as pumpkin spice, blueberry, and cherry. She also shared that his “croque monsieur”, which is a savoury item, was also one of her favs!
Alix shared that he was inspired by his grandmother’s baking but initially, his first passion was music! A classically trained pianist, Alix also played the trombone and wrote his own music. He then pursued his passion for baking by enrolling in Culinary School. After working for various hotels, he wanted to work for himself so when the property came up for sale on 248 Avenue de la Cathedrale, he knew it was the meant to be and officially opened La Belle Baguette on July17, 2015.
Today, you can find pastries, sandwiches, and the “croque monsieur” at various coffee shops throughout the city. As well, Alix carries several “Manitoba Made” products at his bakery.
Even though Alix devotes most of his time to the bakery, he is focused on work-life balance by listening to music to relax, pursuing creative projects, and still writing his own music.

When someone you know (or perhaps admire from a far) shares some exciting news such as getting a promotion, winning the lottery or becoming engaged, your initial reaction is one of being happy for them. But sometimes, that little green-eyed monster creeps in and changes everything.
In episode 74, Genny spoke about growing up Catholic and attending Catechism (or Sunday School as it’s called in other religions) every Saturday. Aside from the other teachings, she learned about the seven deadly sins, also known as cardinal sins, which are pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. In this episode, she focused on envy and its counterpart, jealousy.
She explained that envy is longing or desiring something, as in being envious of your friend’s good luck. Jealousy, on the other hand, is feeling threatened, protective or insecure of losing one’s position or thing to someone else, as in being jealous that your friend is dating your ex-boyfriend. The two are often confused but are quite different. And envy and jealousy are among the most powerful motivations in real life and in fiction. You can find examples of both in literature, movies, and music.
The green-eyed monster was coined by Shakespeare in his play, Othello, and is synonymous with jealousy, which can be a destructive emotion and may lead to anger and humiliation or worse.

Coffee doing more. That is what Más Coffee is all about. It’s even in their name because “Más” means “more” in Spanish so loosely translated, Más Coffee means “More Coffee”!
In episode 73, Genny spoke with David Pinto, who is a co-owner of Más Coffee along with his partner Cam Friesen. David is a full-time Physical Education teacher at Linden Christian School, and spends his evenings and weekends at the café, when he’s not chauffeuring kids or spending time with his family.
David shared that he’s always enjoyed coffee, especially during those late nights studying in high school and university. But the experience that changed his perception of coffee was visiting Phil & Sebastian coffee roasters in Calgary. It got him interested in finding different coffees and flavours and profiles, and became a goal to do something with coffee one day.
Initially, David and Cam wanted to roast their own coffee so they purchased a coffee roaster but realized that there was more work to be done to get it operational. They also realized their space at 70 Arthur Street was bigger than they thought so they decided to offer coffee and purchased coffee beans from Honduras (David was born in Honduras).
When asked what that means to them, David said they work in partnership with coffee growers and producers, ensuring they support fair wages, equality, and environmental diligence along the way. It's coffee doing more.

Music is the universal language. It can soothe, inspire, and heal your soul. And the stories you hear through the lyrics have the power to literally change your life.
In episode 72, Genny spoke with Robb Nash, a Winnipeg musician, about how music and storytelling have saved not only his life but the lives of others. And he was generous in sharing his story with her. When he was 17 years old, Robb suffered major head injuries in an automobile accident. Dealing with severe mental health issues, he turned to music, inspiring him to share his story with others through music.
He created the band, the Robb Nash Project, an immersive concert experience that engages audiences and addresses topics related to mental health. In 2007, Robb began performing in Canadian high schools as a motivational speaker and musician.
To reach as many students as possible, Robb created “A Living Curriculum: Stories of Life Through Darkness”, a student-focused wellness curriculum that uses real-life stories and music to support social and emotional learning. Their objective is to foster an environment of empathy and hope and to nurture a community of support.
Since the project started in 2009, the Robb Nash Project has reached more than a million students through school shows and social media. As Robb says, “We aren’t trying to change the world; we’re trying to create world changers.”
A registered Canadian charity, their mission is to reach more students through school shows and add more stories to “A Living Curriculum”. If you would like to support their mission, please click on the donate button on their website.

In episode 66, Genny shared her experience about a retreat she took to Moon Gate Guest House, where she needed to get away; to withdraw into herself and find some clarity. She also spoke about the owners, Jenny and Michel Dupas, who created this soul nurturing place where you “disconnect” from the busy world and grow, heal, and “connect” with yourself and Mother Earth.
In episode 71, Genny shared that her biggest joy from that time at Moon Gate Guest House was meeting the owners, Jenny and Michel Dupas. And she had an opportunity to speak with Jenny Dupas about why they created Moon Gate Guest House. Jenny said they felt that people were disconnected from nature, and that they needed to immerse themselves in something different. As soon as they put that out to the universe, the signs appeared and everything flowed from there.
They chose the name Moon Gate because, as Jenny explained, the moon is feminine energy. It’s much softer, more caring, more nurturing, and so manifesting a name for that opened a space for people to experience that feminine energy. The “gate” came from a vision that Michel had one night, where he saw a gate, and he knew instinctively that an opening or a portal was created. They believe that this portal allows people to come and connect with the land, with themselves and with Mother Nature.

Why is an attitude of gratitude so important?
We can feel grateful for things in our life but sometimes, we forget to feel that gratitude. But it’s paying attention to what we’re grateful for, and who we’re grateful for.
Genny spoke about gratitude and how appropriate it was to do that on Canadian Thanksgiving. She shared how grateful she is to give thanks to family and friends and to give thanks for the food served at her Thanksgiving dinner. Genny shared her Thanksgiving dinner menu and how she said it’s a labour of love to prepare that for her family.
She also spoke about the book, “Good Morning, I Love You” by Shauna Shapiro. In that book, Shauna refers to three pillars as it pertains to mindfulness or, as Genny put it, can apply to gratitude. They are: Intention, Attention, and Attitude. What is your intention? Are you paying attention to it? And what is your attitude?
At the end of the day, it’s paying attention to your attitude of gratitude.

“Clarity leads to awareness. Awareness leads to growth.”
Alex Banayan, author of the book, “The Third Door”, created a tool called, “The 30-Day Clarity Challenge”. It involves getting a new notebook and writing the answers to these three questions every day: What filled me with enthusiasm today? What drained me of energy today? What did I learn about myself today?
In episode 69, Genny learned about the clarity challenge from her friend Laura McLeod. Despite not successfully keeping to the habit of writing in any journals for very long, she was intrigued by this concept and decided to give it a try. Genny was surprised at how much she enjoyed this exercise and started to see patterns of where she was drained of energy, and also what she learned about herself.
Genny read Alex’s book a few years ago and, because of the challenge, decided to read it again. She shared some of the messages and lessons learned from the book as well as a few of her own experiences.

When you think about a road trip, what springs to mind? Is it the adventure? The snacks from the gas stations along the route? The thrill of the open road?
In episode 68, Genny shared her thoughts about road trips, and shared her memories of trips with her family when she was a young girl and a trip she took with her (now husband) Frank and her two children to Calgary about 20 years ago.
Genny wanted to create her own coffee road trip, one she wanted to do in early 2020 but had to cancel because of the pandemic. She was finally able to take that road trip with her friend Stephanie Robinson, and visited several locations in southern Manitoba.

People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
In episode 67, Genny spoke about a social media post that her friend Joanne shared where she
talked about her circle of wisdom; friends she’s known for a lifetime. Joanne also mentioned
her circle of entrepreneurs; women that she’s met through the Made to Grow Group.
Genny reflected on her friendships, and spoke about how people come into your life for a
reason, a season, or a lifetime. People might be there to help you with a problem or support
you or teach you a lesson (reason). They might not always be in contact with you but the bonds
of friendship are still strong (season). And they might be lifelong friends like the ones Joanne
spoke about (lifetime).
Genny also spoke about the importance of valuing your friendships; showing your appreciation
and telling them how much they mean to you. Something as simple as saying, “thank you for
being my friend” might make the world of difference to someone you care about.

Going on a retreat can mean a weekend at the spa to rest and relax. It could also be mean a spiritual experience such as visiting an Ashram in India. And it could also be a group getaway in which members of that group take time to form bonds with each other and work on goals.
In the military sense, it’s the act of withdrawing from enemy forces to regroup and come back stronger. And when you apply that act of withdrawing, a retreat can be a sense of withdrawing into yourself; the act of giving up and taking time to regroup in a quiet and secluded place in order to come back stronger.
In episode 66, Genny spoke about a recent retreat she took at Moon Gate Guesthouse in Whitemouth, Manitoba. It was a very busy summer and she needed to get away; to withdraw into herself and find some clarity. And that’s exactly what she experienced during her stay. Owners Jenny and Michel Dupas created a soul nurturing place where you “disconnect” from the busy world and grow, heal and “reconnect” with yourself and with Mother Earth.
While Genny was on her retreat, she did some exploring in the area, visiting Joe, who roasts Barnwood Coffee, at J & A Farms just past Seddons Corner; Andrew Goosen, who owns Trails End Coffee in Elma; Megan and Rene at Wild Skies Resort; and Shannon at the Spicy Radish Restaurant in Whitemouth.
It was 24 hours of rest and relaxation, visiting coffee roasters (and buying coffee to take home!), and finding that clarity and focus that she needed.

When you think about a big-ticket item such as a car, a trip, or a house, you would typically work with a professional who will ask you what your needs, wants, and “must haves” are and then do the research to provide that for you. And when you think about the cost of each item, a new car (depending on the model and type) can set you back several thousand dollars. And a trip can also set you back several thousand dollars. But a house…that will probably be your biggest ticket item!
In episode 65, Genny spoke with Marcia Bergen, Realtor and Team Lead for the Marcia Bergen Group at Royal LePage Prime Real Estate. With a background in commercial and residential law from her years as a real estate paralegal, she brings a wealth of knowledge in protecting and guiding her clients through the process of buying or selling.
Additionally, Marcia has over 25 years experience in buying, renovating and selling multiple homes and, with her connections to tradespeople and a knack for effective and attractive marketing, she will guide you through every step of the process, making sure your voice is heard and your ideas and plans are taken into full consideration. She believes that being a good realtor is about doing what is best financially and personally for each client. And because of her care and consideration for her clients, she’s made some lasting connections.
No matter where you are in your buying or selling process, get in touch with Marcia and grab a coffee or a chat. She would love to be a part of your team.

You’ve probably never met a personality test, astrology reading, or quiz that you didn’t like. Call it ego, curiosity, or narcissism, but if a system claims to understand your personality traits and deepest desires, you’re usually all in. While you can identify as a Type 2 in the Enneagram or think that the characteristics of a Capricorn suit to you to a T, it’s usually for entertainment purposes. But what if there was a system that gave you insight into how you were meant to live; that helped you understand your emotions, your energy centres, and your life purpose? That system is called Human Design.
In episode 64, Genny spoke with Carlene Pyziak, a Reiki Level III practitioner and a level 1 certified coach through the Modern Spirit Society, a space she created in 2020 when she experienced a strong pull to find her spiritual connection, that she now offers others to begin their own spiritual journey. She’s also a physiotherapist with the RC Walk-In Clinic at Garden City Shopping Mall. A Human Design reader, Carlene is well-versed in astrology, meditation, manifestation, and breathwork, and offers Tarot and Oracle card readings.
Carlene describes Human Design as a blend of Kabbalah, the I Ching, Myers-Briggs, astrology, bio-chemistry, genetics, and the chakra system. Based on the time, place, and date of your birth, it not only maps out the sky at the time of your birth but it identifies your dominant energy centres to create your personal body graph or energetic blueprint. It’s a tool you can use to learn more about yourself and how your energy works. It also indicates how you are unique as a person and guides you in living in a manner that is in sync with who you are.
Carlene also touches on how manifestation works, and the healing meditations she offers with her friend Megan Thomas with Rejuv Healing.

When it comes to promoting your product, service, event or business, you typically rely on traditional marketing or social media to help spread the word. But so much has changed with social media, and is continuing to change, that it’s hard to keep up and you may not be getting the results or the reach that you expected. And digital marketing has become more of an effective promotional tool.
In episode 63, Genny spoke with Tineke Buiskool-Leeuwma, owner of Tin Can Creative. With over 20 years of retail, community (business improvement zones) and residential marketing, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in marketing, advertising, public relations, event management, communications, and social media.
A story teller at heart, Tineke graduated from the Creative Communications program at Red River College, where she honed her writing skills with an eye on a journalism career. She soon fell in love with marketing and advertising, and knew she could use her writing skills to weave her stories in these mediums. But her (not so secret) favourite for all business, especially small businesses, is the world of social media. That is where Tineke shines by helping her clients increase and enhance their social media presence.
A helper at heart as well, Tineke is all about dreaming big, and the importance of community. Passionate about positivity and Christmas (she believes it should be Christmas every day!), she believes that happiness is highlighted through inspiring people and encouraging relationships.

“I wanted to give a woman comfortable clothes that would flow with her body. A woman is closest to being naked when she is well dressed.” Coco Chanel.
In episode 62, Genny spoke with Lennard Taylor, owner of Lennard Taylor Design Studio, a sustainable clothing studio, gallery, and retail space that focuses on locally produced, zero-waste garments designed in classic styles and made from luxurious fabrics. An artist, painter, designer, and writer, he blends textiles and paint together to form one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art that makes the boutique feel like an art studio/fashion house. All of us go through different stages in our life but for women, there are specific stages or rights of passage if you will. You’re a girl until you’re an adult, and then you’re considered a “maiden”. When you get married and have children, you’re a “mother”. And when you get older, you’re considered a grandmother or a “crone”. That’s the perception that older women get; that they are past their time.
In episode 61, Genny spoke with Liliane Régnier, a Holistic Health Guide for women and a Prenatal Specialist who shares her perspective on the different stages. She is also a yoga teacher who teaches prenatal yoga and regular yoga that she integrates into the work she does with women.
Her mission is helping women going through important life transitions to connect to their own innate wisdom, knowledge and creativity. Liliane feels this is an opportunity for women to embrace these opportunities for healing, for growth, and for transformation. Because when they do the work, that is where the magic happens in their lives and in their journey. In addition to offering her services to women going through life transitions, Liliane also holds regular “gatherings for women”, where women come together to share and to learn.

Did you know that, according to research, we make an average of 35,000 decisions every day. And 226 decisions are about food.
In episode 60, Genny talked about how the decisions around food can be about what you’re eating during the day, or the proverbial “What’s for dinner?” question. It’s also about grocery shopping, or going out for dinner. She also commented that some decisions are not actual decisions because it’s already a habit so you don’t have to think about it. For instance, her drink of choice at Starbucks is a tall dark roast in a grande cup with a little cream (or small dark roast with a little cream at a local coffee shop). It’s what she always gets so she doesn’t have to make a decision.
But when you have more than one option and you can’t decide between the two, you’re in the “sea of indecision”. And that’s when the “should” comes into play. You’re trying to decide if you “should” pick one option or the other. Sometimes, you’ll ask a friend or a stranger or even the person who is taking your order – what you “should” order. You’re looking for validation. Be careful that you don’t allow guilt or pressure or encouraging procrastination when you are “shoulding” your decision such as “I should do my taxes but I feel like watching Netflix.”.
Genny recently read the book, “F the Shoulds. Do the Wants” by Tricia Huffman. In this book, Tricia shares how she struggled with the “shoulds” and even tried to eliminate that word from her vocabulary but found it a bit difficult. She suggests replacing the word “should” (and changing your mindset) to “want”. As in “I want to have this ice cream cone” or “Do I want this ice cream cone?” There’s also the word “need” that speaks to some urgency as in “I need to do my taxes”.

Did you know that during menopause, the time that marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle (typically between the ages of 45 and 55), women’s hormones start to change and the production of estrogen and progesterone decreases? This drop in estrogen can cause many symptoms such as “hot flashes” or “night sweats” – that sudden feeling of warmth in the upper body, accompanied by a flushed face and sweating.
In episode 59, Genny shared how drinking hot coffee can sometimes cause hot flashes for her during the day or night sweats if she’s had a glass of red wine in the evening. To understand more about menopause and the effects on women in their midlife, she invited Sylvia Sunstrum to share her thoughts and experience on the subject.
Sylvia is a breast cancer survivor who inspires and educates midlife women to take control of their health through her Instagram account sassy_withstyle. After her mother passed away from ovarian cancer, she got tested and discovered that she carried the BRCA (BReast CAncer) gene mutation. This put her at high risk for ovarian and breast cancer. As a preventative measure, she decided to get her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed, which put her into surgical menopause. At the time, she didn’t associate her systems with menopause but then she put her efforts into a natural healthcare journey while learning more about menopause, the symptoms, and how to recognize them, treat them, and learn to embrace and celebrate this transition in life.

What does it mean to soften? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it means to make or become gentler or less harsh, to make or become soft or less firm.
In episode 58, Genny spoke about how the section in the book, “Rise Sister Rise” by Rebecca Campbell, entitled “It’s Ok to Soften”, made an impact on her. The author asks, "What are you striving for/where in your life are you pushing or controlling?" and "What is behind that striving/pushing/controlling?"
Genny spoke about being a “control freak” and how she wanted to control everything, from her emotions to her actions and reactions. She realized her control was causing friction in her relationships. Genny identified how learning to let go was important, and how letting go of anything rigid or harsh was so freeing.
Genny also referenced “The Atlas of the Heart” by Brene Brown and how we deal with over 30 different emotions.

What is a renaissance woman? It’s someone who has a wide range of abilities and interests especially in the arts and sciences. It’s someone who enjoys learning new things, possibly above all else.
In episode 57, Genny spoke with Sharon O’Leary, owner of That O’Leary Girl Inc., who is someone that embodies all these qualities. Sharon shared how she got started in the tech field in the year 2000 and how, 22 years later, she’s working as a Senior Project Manager and a Senior Organizational Change Management Specialist. Along the way, Sharon also became an Integral Master Coach, applying her coaching skills to her project management roles.
Aside from her tech experience, Sharon is, first and foremost, an artist. She shared how she got started in that field by taking art lessons at the age of 12. Genny and Sharon also spoke about being left-brained (more analytical and methodical) and right-brained (more creative and artistic). Over the years, Sharon has been able to weave in her creative and artistic side into the more analytical and technical roles.
As someone with a thirst for learning, Sharon became a Certified End of Life Doula, and an instructor with the University of Winnipeg Professional Applied Continuing Education. She still indulges her love of art by holding paint classes and is currently working on her own art show.
A lover of good coffee and good wine, Sharon shares this love with Genny.

A Paralympian is an athlete who competes in the Paralympic Games, and who has bodily differences and different types of disabilities. But according to Braun Ability, that definition doesn’t come close to explaining what defines them. A Paralympian is courageous. They have heart and soul to the core. They overcome obstacles that the average person will never understand.
In episode 56, Genny spoke with Winnipeg-born Colin Mathieson, a seasoned veteran in wheelchair athletics, who competed in his first Olympics at the 1996 Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in the 4 x 4 Relay. A 4-time Paralympian with Canada, Colin has competed on the national team since 1995, attending every Summer Olympic Games since then (with the exception of Athens in 2004).
Born with Spina Bifida, his beginning in the sport was inspired by watching wheelchair athletes compete in the Manitoba Marathon when he was 9 years old, watching from the steps of his house. He was also inspired by Rick Hansen’s “Man in Motion” world tour.
Colin still races but has also pursued a career in social work, currently working for the Deer Lodge Centre. A coffee aficionado, he shares his love of coffee and Starbucks with Genny!

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by LIFE??
In episode 55, Genny spoke about how she thought she could handle her responsibilities of running the podcast, teaching at the University of Winnipeg PACE and teaching Zumba – oh, and also having a life! She realized she was feeling overwhelmed when she forgot about an appointment.
Prior to this, she learned about the book, “Rise Sister Rise” from the Made to Grow Conference and requested a copy from her local library. As fate would have it, the book was available the day she forgot about her appointment. After reading the chapter about making space and what can she remove from her life, she realized she needed to make a change.

Do you know what your brand identity is? Is it your smile? Your personality? How are you presenting yourself to the world?
In episode 54, Genny spoke with Shana Robinson, a speaker, a workshop leader, and a lifestyle business coach. She is also the owner of the Branding Boutique, helping female business owners find their style and their voice, and helping them find their brand identify.
Shana shared that the branding business actually found her. One of her coaches was turning 40 and he asked her if she could revamp his look, which she did and then worked on revamping his brand identity. And when Shana started her own business, she noticed that other coaches had this beautiful photography so she started with her own brand shoot. Over time, people started commenting on her branding and wanted to do that for themselves. And so that’s how the Branding Boutique was created.
Shana helps women identify their brand pillars, and focuses on the woman first, then the brand, and then the business. She helps them to discover their passion, their joy, and their pride in themselves. As Shana says, “You are your walking billboard. You are your brand. And you have to be your brand at all times.”

Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, once said, “In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman.”
In episode 53, Genny spoke with Rana Bokhari, an entrepreneur, lawyer, former leader of the Liberal Party in Manitoba, and now, a mayoral candidate for Winnipeg. A politician since 2013, Rana was the youngest person to lead the Manitoba Liberals and the first Manitoban of South Asian descent to lead a political party in the province.
Rana is passionate about Winnipeg and has a clear vision that encompasses her three pillars: community, sustainability, and prosperity. She shared that band-aid solutions or one-off solutions are not enough.
Concerned about the environment, the land and how the most vulnerable are being treated, Rana is committed to justice and creating space for the voiceless, while being her true, authentic self. A woman, a Pakistani woman and a Muslim woman, Rana will get the job done.

This episode is a special anniversary episode, celebrating the first year of the Coffee with Genny B podcast. When Genny launched her first episode about her 60 Days of 60 Coffees (which was the catalyst for creating this podcast), she had no idea the impact it would make on herself, her guests, and her listeners.
And the idea for the podcast (and for the Coffee with Genny B business) was conceptualized because of a conversation Genny had with Linda Drosdowech, a business and life coach, during a coaching session. For her anniversary episode, Genny invited Linda to be her special guest.
In this episode, Genny spoke with Linda about those initial coaching sessions, how Linda encouraged her to trust her inner voice and trust the process, how she guided her through the necessary steps to launch the podcast and is now celebrating the success of the podcast with her.
They talked about how the episodes have evolved over the year and the amazing conversations Genny’s had with coffee roasters, coffee shop owners, and people from all walks of life. Because even though the podcast has coffee in the title, it’s really about conversations over coffee.

When whales display an engaging curiosity and choose to swim within close proximity to a boat, this behaviour is known as “whale mugging”.
In episode 51, Genny spoke with Heather Klassen, who owns Mugging Whales Coffee with her husband Jim Born, about how they started their coffee business and why they chose that name for their business.
Heather said the idea for Mugging Whales began on their vacation to Maui, Hawaii in 2018. While they were there, they had the amazing experience of being “mugged” by whales and enjoying the show while stuck for almost two hours, waiting until the whales swam away.
Coffee is a passion of theirs so they spent time visiting the little coffee shops and especially enjoyed the Maui coffee. When they got home, they wanted to pursue their passion so they decided to start their own coffee business. When deciding what to call their business, they both decided that Mugging Whales was the perfect name!
A micro-roaster in Winnipeg, Heather and Jim source specialty coffees from countries in the area known as the “Bean Belt” that has the best growing climates for coffee and roast their coffee in small batches once a week so it’s fresh.

The words "I Am" are powerful words, offering the opportunity for positive affirmations of healing, self-love, purpose, and abundance. Adding the word "Love" offers the belief that everyone is worthy of love, should be loved, and feel love regardless of their age, colour, or gender. And adding the word "Project", offer the potential for limitless possible actions. These words are part of what the I AM PROJECT is all about.
In episode 50, Genny spoke with Amy Tung, an entrepreneur and community advocate who created the I AM LOVE PROJECT, a socially conscious enterprise, in 2018 out of a desire to help and give back, to "spread the love" to the community, be a catalyst for change, support those who need it the most and open a door of opportunities for others.
Drawing on her own journey of persevering through her challenges, Amy wanted to provide women an avenue to restart their lives and build something better. The I AM LOVE PROJECT supports women through training and community support and provides opportunities for employment and extra financial assistance when they need to find community, purpose, and hope.
They began making bracelets using different crystals that were then sold to raise funds for local charities, schools, non-profits, and other organizations. They now make earrings and necklaces in addition to the bracelets, and 60% of their jewelry is handmade by women in Manitoba facing employment barriers, and 40% are imported for assembly.
Amy's mission is to continuously encourage self-love, a mindset that is cultivated through the support of the community and backed up with heart and hard work.

In the special theory of relativity, Albert Einstein determined that time is relative, as the rate at which time passes depends on your frame of reference. The faster you move, the slower time moves.
In episode 49, Genny shared her thoughts on the subject of time. How we spend the 24 hours in a day. She also shared her experiences of not honouring the time by “cramming” more into her schedule than time would allow and, as a result, being chronically late.
Genny also spoke about the book, “The Big Leap,” by Gay Hendricks, and how it relates to time. Gay talks about activities that we do in the “zone of excellence”; activities that we do extremely well and that we make a good living in that zone. It’s your comfort zone. But living in the zone of excellence doesn’t always fulfill you; bring you that sense of joy and purpose. Moving into the “zone of genius”, you are doing activities that are you are uniquely suited to do. They draw upon your special gifts and strengths. Genny shared that when she’s in the zone of genius, it’s as if time stopped for her. A moment that took two hours seemed like only a few minutes. She was lost in the moment, feeling that ease, that joy, that purpose. She was lit from within.

Do you have a sweet tooth and crave delicious treats such as cookies and cupcakes? Do you love to buy beautifully decorated cakes for special occasions? And do you prefer to support local bakeries that produce quality products using quality ingredients? If you answered “yes” to all three questions, then you should check out Baked By Bronwynn!
In this episode, Genny spoke with Bronwynn about why and how she started her business. She shared how she started working at Baked Expectations when she was 16 years old and how that started her love of baking. She also worked at the Fairmont Hotel making cakes and did a stint as a manager. That instilled in her the idea of the “5 star experience” as she put it. When you give someone a "high five", it can be to celebrate a win, praise someone for something they did, or encourage someone to keept going. Slapping your hand against someone else's hand is sharing your energy with that person, and it's usually accompanied by a huge smile and sometimes with the phrase "way to go". Little did we know that we could do it with ourselves and for ourselves.
Genny shares her thoughts from the book "The High 5 Habit" by Mel Robbins. She mentions how the simple act of touching the mirror and giving yourself a "high 5" every morning has changed her in a very positive way. As well, this episode will help you find a way to deal with any limiting beliefs you might have, and encourage you to embrace self-acceptance.

Did you know that tea, not coffee, is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water?
It is well known that drinking tea has a lot of health benefits. Tea is a very rich source of a specific antioxidant called flavonoid that may help boost your immune system and fight off inflammation. Of all the teas, green tea is considered the healthiest tea, as it can help to boost brain and heart health. Tea can also help you relax and help lower your stress, as it contains natural herbs that are designed to calm us.
In episode 21, Genny chats with Michelle Bloom, owner of Three 6 Tea located in Selkirk, Manitoba. A certified tea expert, Michelle shares her knowledge about the different types of tea and offers tips on how you can choose the right type of tea for you. Speaking of which, choosing a tea can be a challenge as Michelle carries 150 varieties of tea including black, green, white, oolong, and pu-erh. She also carries matcha, rooibos, and honeybush (which is one of their top sellers). As well, she carries tisanes (that don’t actually contain tea leaves) that come in fruit, herbal, and wellness varieties. So choosing the right tea really depends on your mood, your feelings, and your likes and dislikes. It also depends on the smell as each tea has its own. As Michelle says, “the nose knows”.

It sounds more inclusive, and it’s an opportunity to really connect with each other. She shares a story of a recent impromptu gathering at the home of friends of hers and her husband Frank. As Genny describes it, it was a magical evening. After a sumptuous family-style dinner, everyone sat around and talked and drank pot after pot of espresso and French Press into the night. And the beauty of it was that no one left the table. Everyone was content to sit and converse with each other. ----more----
As Genny started to learn more about gathering, she discovered a book called, “The Art of Gathering: Why We Meet and Why It Matters” by Priya Parker. In her book, Priya says that events flourish when they are built on thoughtfulness, structure, curiosity, and generosity of spirit. What’s interesting about this book is that it was published in 2018, before Covid. And what’s really interesting is that before Covid, Priya was saying that gatherings should have a purpose. There should be a reason why you want to get together. And if Covid taught us anything, it’s that we can’t take for granted the opportunities to meet and to gather with each other, and to spend time with each other.----more----

For most of us, coffee is that delicious first sip in the morning that warms your whole body. But for some people, coffee is a way of coping with life. In this episode, Tom Harden talks about his role in helping those who need it the most. When he heard that the Oake family were planning to build the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre in his neighbourhood to honour their late son who died of an overdose in 2011, he knew he wanted to be involved in some way.
----more----
Knowing that coffee is the mainstay for all rehab and addiction centres, he created “Baristas 4 Bruce”, with the help of a local supplier, and started selling coffee beans at local coffee shops and retailers. Tom pays for the coffee upfront and shares that it’s his contribution to the cause. In addition to the coffee, he also sells jars of his “Bees 4 Bruce” honey. Tom donates 100% of all proceeds from the sale of coffee and honey to the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. His goal is to raise enough money to pay for a whole year’s supply of coffee.
We can all be an agent of hope like Tom. And sometimes, all it takes is a cup of coffee.

Remember the TV show, “Cheers” where “everybody knows your name”? You get that same attention and recognition when you visit the two locations of Colosimo Coffee Roasters: the coffee house at 140 Provencher Blvd and the coffee bar at 145 Pacific Ave. For Jay Colosimo, it’s about connecting over coffee. He loves the interaction he has with his customers and the opportunity to talk about coffee and about their day. The fact that he and his staff can have those experiences and interactions with their customers helps to build those relationships and, in essence, they become part of the Colosimo coffee family.

Jay started his coffee journey in Calgary. While attending university, he started working part-time for a coffee roaster. Soon after, he fell in love with the whole coffee process. When he returned to Winnipeg, he started his own coffee business. First, as a supplier of coffee for offices, cafes, and restaurants. And then, a few years ago, they started their own brand - Colosimo Coffee. Working with a coffee roaster in Calgary, they source their own beans and create their own roast profiles, which allows them to know where the beans are coming from, and share that knowledge with their customers.

When COVID hit in 2020, he pivoted to create their first brick-and-mortar on Pacific Avenue to feature their own coffees. This allowed people, who were ordering coffee for their home delivery, to try the coffees first, which created those conversations over coffee that are now such an important part of their business. In May 2021, Jay opened his second location on Provencher, and soon after that, created his Coffee Club - a subscription program where you can sign up online for a 3 or 6-month subscription. Once a month, they deliver a 2 lb bag of coffee (a different one or your fav) to your door for free. Jay is planning to open a third location on Henderson Hwy in 2022, where he will set up a micro-roaster in the cafe, where customers can see the roasting process and then enjoy a cup of freshly roasted Colosimo coffee.

Coffee roasters are an important part of the coffee processing chain. In this episode, Genny speaks with Colleen Wohlgemuth, owner of Stone City Coffee Roasters (with her husband Jay), located in Steinbach, Manitoba. Colleen talks about how they started the coffee business, and about why they created Stone City Coffee Roasters. It’s because they are passionate about awesome coffee and about people, and their purpose is to create belonging in the community through coffee. It’s also about connecting with people over coffee.
----more----Colleen and Jay specifically source green beans that have chocolate-tasting notes and they roast almost all the beans to bring out that richness. For their blends, they mix the different beans together and then roast them to find the taste profile they love. A small family-run enterprise, they do everything by hand; from filling, weighing, and sealing each bag, to lifting 150 lb burlap bags of coffee beans. As well, they don’t keep an inventory of roasted coffee beans on hand but instead, roast their beans to fulfill orders, either placed online or sent in from any of the 39 retailers in Manitoba that carry their coffee. Colleen said they will soon start roasting their “Merry Christmas Blend”, a mix of light, medium, and dark roast beans that resembles the “party mix”, as they prepare for the various Christmas markets this fall.

William Shakespeare wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”. He was referring to your life as “the play” and the various roles you play throughout your life. But just as a play has three acts (or more), there are also three acts in your life: Act 1- birth to adulthood, Act 2 - adulthood to 50, and then Act 3. So, what is the 3rd act in life? It’s the time after you’re 50 and before you’re dead. Too often we’re told that life ends or at least winds down after you’re 50.----more---- But the 3rd act is NOT the end of your play. It’s the time to bridge the gap between the life you’re living and the one you dream of. It’s your time to create a vision for what you truly want, and connect with who you are deep in your soul. It’s time to reframe the perception of ageing, and re-write your life’s story going forward. And just as it’s important to create a financial plan for yourself, it’s just as important, if not more, to create your non-financial plan for your 3rd act and beyond.
----more----Think about those dreams, those hobbies, and those desires that you buried deep inside yourself and dig them up. Bring them to the surface. Consider how full and beautiful your life could be in your 3rd act. Can you imagine if your 3rd act was the very best act in your play?

There’s good customer service, and then there’s exceptional customer service, where customers are treated as valued guests. And you can find that at all three locations of Harrison’s Coffee Co.: Johnston Terminal, Waterfront Drive, and the Outlet Mall at Seasons of Tuxedo. Al Dawson has cultivated a culture of giving in all his cafes that starts with his “Manifesto” which is posted in all his cafes and on his website. It represents the values of the organization such as being kind, leaving things better than when you found them, and being part of the solution. It’s about being transparent and who they are as a people. Speaking of which, it’s about people first and Al’s team means the world to him. Al shares the stories behind the names of his coffees and shares the untold story of how many lives are impacted by a cup of coffee. He says that when you say to someone “let’s go for coffee”, what you’re really saying is that “I want to spend time with you”.

As children, we played make-believe, pretending to be different characters from our fairy tale books. As we grew up, we then took on different roles such as mother, friend or co-worker, and the characteristics of those roles became part of our identity. And when we think of owning our identity, our name is an important part of that identity. But sometimes, we struggle to define our identity. We let self-doubt take over especially when we’re told we are “too much” of something. We struggle with that “imposter syndrome” and start to wonder if we are good enough, smart enough or worthy enough. So, we need to say no to our self-doubt. Take back control of our identity. Embrace who we are. Take that leap of faith. Say your name and proclaim it to the world. And own your stuff!

In this episode, Genny talks about connecting with yourself and your coffee, through your coffee ritual, and your coffee self-talk. How getting up early before everyone else in the house can really make a difference in your day. Instead of feeling rushed, you can start your day feeling more relaxed. She’ll also talk about how the simple act of slowing down to enjoy your coffee gives you the opportunity to hit that reset button, and transform your day.
You will learn a simple method on how you can reframe your negative thoughts by spotting those negative thoughts, stopping and asking yourself where these negative thoughts are coming from, and swapping them into thoughts of gratitude and self-love. Applying the words, “I AM” to your daily affirmations can leave you feeling more positive.
Genny will also share a few tips on how you can apply mindfulness to your daily preparation of coffee. Being mindful of the little pleasures that add meaning and value to life can help lower your stress and improve your quality of life. To savour the best of life’s moments, we need to take time.
