In life, we are often expected to do the right but no one really takes the time to explain to you how. Sadly college is no exception to this.
Hi, my name is Alex Ramirez and I am an educator, content creator, and graduate student. This podcast is simple, I will share with you all the cool things I have learned through my experience as an educator and a first-generation, low-income, immigrant college student so that you can have a better foundation to pursue your definition of success.
Nowadays when we hear stories of first-generation minority students like you and me, they often focus on the negative aspects and the many roadblocks we have to overcome. Even when this is certainly an important part of our story, there are many more things that are also important to the full picture.
In today’s episode, I talked to Karina Ventura. She is a first-generation, Latinx woman who is currently a graduate student at Cal State San Bernardino. Karina and I explored the many skills and support systems that helped us get through our undergrad careers as first-gen students.
Main Points:
4.00 how to develop a support system
7.10 what is the value of being involved on campus?
9.53 Utilizing your strengths to deal with imposter syndrome
14.26 The importance of being intentional with your time
18.03 Roling with punches, learning how to be flexible with your goals, and not being scared to transition
24.31 The biggest advice Karina has for you in your undergraduate - enjoy the journey!

Okay so how many times a semester do you doubt the value of your college education? If you're anything like me probably a lot. In this episode, I talk to you about some of the reasons why this is the case, and I also share two things you can do to give meaning to your professional and academic careers.
I know finals are on the horizon for a lot of us, so as you begin to prepare I want to share something I learned during my time as an undergrad student. It is called the Pomodoro technique. This technique is all about high focus studying for a short period of time followed by quick breaks. So every 25 minutes I will remind you to take a 5-minute break. I will do this for 1 hour. For better experience put me in repeat mode.
