Is it imposter Syndrome, or is it just plain old racism?
Here's the definition of imposter syndrome: "The condition of feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite being high-performing in external, objective ways. This condition often results in people feeling like "a fraud" or "a phony" and doubting their abilities."
However, we have to question, why do we feel this way? Is it due to a system of inequities and structural barriers that have been put in place to make you feel inadequate, or is it just due to being fresh in the job market?

Dr. James has been recognized for her innovations in instructional methods and research designs targeting historically excluded populations. Prior to leadership at HCES, Dr. James was a leader in higher education for almost 10 years, serving as a faculty member, department chair, and data analyst for several institutions. She is currently a Lecturer at Spelman College. Dr. James has an established record of successfully managing grant contracts and is well-published in the area of health disparities.

Upon graduation, he was hired by the Department of Defense.

As a first generation college student navigating my career and life after college was definitely a learning experience. I made plenty of mistakes, felt all the feelings, and of course felt as though I was navigating this alone! I've noticed so many students who graduate at the top of their class, but they struggle with finding a job in their desired field. Dr. Des is here to share some gems with you to help you get to where you need to be.
Stop throwing stuff to the wall to see what sticks and check out these two tips that can help move you forward.
Here are just a few things she's discussing in this episode!
- Make sure your internships, volunteer experience or part-time job is in your desired field. Even if it's an unpaid internship if it pushes you closer to your desired outcome then go for it! What you do now is setting you up for where you'll be 3-5 years from now, remember that in your decision.
- Stop applying to 100 jobs per day, this is not a great method. You need to really spend time cultivating and personalizing your resume/cover letter to positions that you actually want. Remember that this is setting you up for where you'll be in the next few years. Be intentional.
