The core message of the Bible is God's love for all people. You are loved. Yet, in our modern hurried times, we sometimes overlook the hidden story of redemption and forgiveness. Join me as I share what I'm learning from Jesus with a focus on grace, love, and mercy.
The original Greek language of the New Testament includes several words translated into English simply as "love." However, love can be confusing. Without context, we can miss the deeper meaning of what is written.
Storge is easiest explained as familial love. It is the natural love that family members have for one another. In this message we look at storge along with applications for those seeking to follow in the Way of Jesus Christ.

When we follow Jesus, the Bible makes it clear that He has already done all of the work for our salvation. Therefore, we are invited into a relationship that allows us to grow in the Way of Jesus Christ. All we have to do is commit to grow and to follow Him.

Thanks requires a sacrifice. It means we give something up.
However, it also implies God has first given to us and that we are willing to trust Him to provide more.

The temptation of greed, when it becomes a motivation in our life, seeks to amass personal wealth so that we may establish our own kingdom on the Earth… a world in which we are in control.
Greed is obsessed with wealth. However, it is not a sin to have wealth and wealth is described as a blessing earned from wisdom.
How, then, do we determine if we are being good stewards or greedy misers?

Gluttony is described as over-indulgence, consumption, or excessiveness. It's danger lies not only in our obsession with more, more, more. Eventually, it takes so much that it threatens to rob from those we care most about. It threatens even the survival of our family.
Gluttony is like a parasitic monster that absorbs so much that it destroys everything in its wake.
Join us in today's message as we open the closet and drag this monster into the light. Together, we will expose its dangers and seek opportunities to defeat it together.

Anger is not a simple thing to define.
It is a brash and quick sin that tries to justify itself by selfish means.
Anger is incredibly ubiquitous, it seeps into every part of our lives and we can see it under almost any rock we choose to filp over. It is often an outward expression of some of the other sins we have addressed in this series. Anger, as we learn today, can shape-shift into different forms including: physical, emotional, or spiritual abuse.

Pride is often a gateway to other sins. It evokes anger, envy, and even greed. This makes pride an especially difficult and important monster to tackle.

Lust is defined by The Pocket Dictionary of Ethics "as an intense or even excessive desire or craving." We often think of it in sexual terms; however, one can experience lust for anything connected to desire.
Lust can be confusing and difficult to discuss because it often hijacks our natural desires for pleasure. These pleasures are a gift from God and can subtly lead us to worship the creation rather than the Creator.

Generally speaking, we think of sloth as laziness. We might even pat ourselves on the back at the notion that, thanks to our great work ethic, we have overcome the temptation of slothfulness.
However, as we learn from the Bible, we see sloth is a sin with roots all the way back in the original fall of man. It is more than just what we do with our hands, it has to do with a temptation to spiritual apathy and inaction. Sloth can even lead us to tear apart one another with unempathetic judgementalism.

Envy is defined by Holman's Bible Dictionary as the "painful or resentful awareness of another’s advantage joined with the desire to possess the same advantage." It can be anything from social standing to a physical possession or even an experience. Envy can be as innocent as FOMO or as sinister as jealousy.
In today's message, we learn how envy can make us like a mindless zombie seeking to consume that which we do not have. It threatens to tear apart our families, break friendships, and endanger our souls.

In James chapter four, we are challenged to become a type of holy resistance fighter and to stand against the evil forces of this world. However, it is not a fight that pushes us to judge one another, rather we are called to begin with ourselves; and, we are to resist the evil from within our own hearts.

James chapter three begins with a caution against becoming a teacher of God's Word. Then, we learn about wisdom and the dangers of the "tongue" or the words we say.
Ultimately, we are challenged to see the dangerous nature of speaking out of turn or of professing something true that we know nothing about. James says these unwise words are akin to lighting a small fire and leaving it unattended in a dry forest. Like a biblical Smokey the Bear, James warns us of the potential to burn the whole world down.

When a church has tunnel vision, it ceases to stretch itself beyond the walls of the building. Eventually, this leads to the death of the local church.

Exodus 24-28 explains the elements of worship in the ancient tabernacle, a place designed as the dwelling place of God. It is, for all practical purposes, what we would call the church today.
God's command to have His people set up the tabernacle teaches us that He wants to have a relationship with us no matter what we are going through. We do not have to wait until we reach our destination to begin to worship. We worship God where we are and begin where we are, even if we are on the road to a better place of recovery.

Examining the plague of the firstborn, recodred in the Book of Exodus, reveals the power and supremacy of God. However, it is especially terrifying and challenging. In order to more completely understand, we have to try and get into the mind of the Egyptian culture and how it is a judgement against their attempts to deny and reject God.

Daniel and his friends are forcefully removed from their family. Worse, their national identity, their names, and even their futures are torn away as they are forced to submit to the Babylonian rulers. Yet, in the face of utmost despair, they continue. They model faith in action.

Tunnel Hill Christian Church has a vision to grow in faith, share hope, and love one another as followers of Jesus.
Our new vision statement is anchored in 1 Cor. 13:13, the conclusion to the Apostle Paul’s chapter defining love. It says:
“... And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
Our new vision statement highlights our biblical focus on Jesus Christ, gives us direction to become more outward focused, and emphasizes our efforts to teach the Word of God every time we gather.
In more detail, it helps to look at the vision in reverse to see how it builds on itself to point us upward towards God.
- As followers of Jesus - The final part, or first step, of our Vision Statment reminds us of the root source of our faith, hope, and love. It reminds us that all we do builds on our efforts to serve Jesus and not ourselves
- Loving one another - Encourages us to be an outpouring of the love Jesus Christ has shown us and a reflection of the New Testament commandments. Love is how we are to treat one another.
- Sharing hope - Reminds us that we exist in the community as a local New Testament church, devoted to fulfilling the Great Commission. Hope is love from Jesus shared with others.
- Growing in faith - Wherever you are on in your faith journey, we are always growing in the Way of Jesus. Growing in faith means we more completely embrace Him in all we say and do. At Tunnel Hill, we are built upon the faith, hope and love of Jesus Christ.

Joseph is favored by his father and then abused by his brothers. He is sold into human trafficking and eventually wrongfully imprisoned. However, he never seems to give up hope that God will provide and fulfill the dreams he was given as a child.
Today, we learn from Joseph's hope-giving example by considering if the things meant to create the greatest harm in our lives may, in fact, be exactly what allows us to point others to Jesus.

Abraham and Sarah are given a unique blessing from God designed to bless them. However, they mess it up in a terrible way by taking things into their own hands. Later in life, Abraham is tested by God and, lessons learned, he gets it right.
Today, we can learn from Abraham's example of faith and extract from it a gift of faith that we too may pass on to others.

Biblical hope is not hope casually tossed at the lowest common denominator. Nor is it hope in a possible good outcome. Certainly, it is not “I hope so… rolling-of-the-dice-type of hope.”
- It is hope that is grounded in generations of faithfulness.
- It is hope proven by the fulfillment of prophecies.
- It is hope connected to faith and the demonstrated love of God; a gift of hope, fulfilled in the name of Jesus!
As followers of Christ, we need not say, “I hope so…” regarding our eternal destination. We have the distinct blessing of true hope, with the assured confidence of the One who is always faithful, perfectly just, and unendingly filled with love and mercy.
Our God's love is the perfect, hope-giving gift, freely given to all.
When we accept His free gift, we are indwelled by His Spirit.
We become born of hope.
We become hope in action.

If honey is the final sweet harvest of beekeeping, then the ultimate reward (of our faith-filled hope in God) is the perfect sweetness found in the promise of eternal life. Our harvest is knowing there is a future and final destination in which we will walk hand in hand with the Lord and with one another.
Jesus has gone ahead of us to prepare a place in which our hope will live for all eternity. It will be unending and everlasting.
That ultimate harvest of our hope is will be perfect in every sense of the word. To get there, we must live and breathe and walk in the Way of Jesus Christ.

To be a honeybee is, literally, to exist dependent on one another. In the truest sense, each individual bee exists for the good of the other bees in their family. Apart from the mutual support of the community, the entire colony will cease to exist.
In this senese, churches and families can learn from the example of the humble honeybee. They become a powerful example of collaboratively working together for a common purpose.
The bees provide a cohesive model of family because they are a superorganism.
They exist in harmony.
They live in unity.
Join us as we explore some biblical examples of unity and take into consideration whether or not we too, as churches and families, can truly experience unity while living in such a divisive time.

Honeybee reproduction includes a fascinating process that includes swarming. Seeing how the bees move together as part of their reproductive cycle can teach us much about the process of disciple-making.
Both include duplication and replication.
While bees share their genetic material through a complex process that includes creating a new queen and splitting their existing colongy, the church also has a type of DNA that makes up our core values. It directs us and provides purpose.
Discipleship, therefore, is a type of reproduction on a spiritual level.
When we get fully connected and trained up in the Lord, we too move like a type of swarm. We go out en masse, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and it stems from the hope-filled knowledge of a God that loves us completely.
Join us as we learn how the knowledge of His love compels us to action, moves us to tell others, and to complete the Great Commission.

The Biblical account of the enemy gives us insight into knowing his motivations. It teaches us to be on alert against attacks on any front. The writer of 1 Peter 5:8 urges us to “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Like the numerous threats facing honeybees, our soul faces a plethora of challenges. Our spiritual enemy, seeking to cause despair, is always on the attack.
He seems to be everywhere. So we must be ready. We must know the enemy and his attacks.
In his classic book, The Strategy of Satan: How to Detect and Defeat Him, Warren Wiersbe summarizes the Biblical explanation of the evil one. Wiersbe outlines how Satan acts as the:
- Deceiver
- Destroyer
- Tempter
- Accuser

According to what Paul writes in Ephesians 4, we are designed to serve. Paul explains how we are able to experience a life-changing level of Christ-centered unity and spiritual maturity only when we accept that Christ has given us each a role. We embrace this unity, not for the purpose of numeric growth or to fill the calendar with more to do, no. We do it for the purpose of works of service designed to build up the body of Christ.
The gifts, pathways, and roles are all designed to connect us to our purpose in Christ Jesus.
The roles given to us by Christ, according to Paul, are: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. These five purposes, of which we are equipped for “works of service” make an acronym: APEST.
Join us as we help discover our role in the church, based on this five-fold ministry as explained by Paul in Ephesians 4.

We are each born, at a specific time, with a powerful and distinct gifting. Paul reminds us, the work we are to do is “prepared in advance” and we are “created in Christ Jesus to do good works…”

It has been said that no one person, other than Jesus Christ, has had more influence on Christianity greater than the Apostle Paul.
Paul carries the message of Jesus from Jerusalem to Rome. When he is eventually martyred for the faith, we can imagine he must have felt a great sense of accomplishment. Paul took the gosepl to the very ends of the Earth! His work continues on today as we share his letters with all people everywhere.
As we look at Paul’s life, we gain a better understanding of what it means to follow Jesus faithfully. It is a calling to serve in every season, despite any trials, continuing the work that Jesus began.

Paul calls us to be Christ's ambassadors. Importantly, he models what it looks like to die to your old self and live as a new creation in Jesus Christ. We become represtentatives of God's righteousness to all people.

If we have perfect love given to us, if grace provides absolute freedom, and if we are continuing the work of Jesus Christ… how do we become a church like found in the Book of Acts and what does it look like?

In Jonah we see rebellion, apathy, denial, and anger. The wayward prophet falls into these self-induced traps even though he is a professed believer of God. Worse yet, he is a leader and called by God to lead people to forgiveness and mercy. He ends up leading people astray.

I Am. Love is a series written to take us through the Book of John, and through the Easter season. These teachings explore the meaning of God's love and dive deep into John's unique gospel message.
John has much to say about love; yet, this love is hard for us to fully grasp. It is unconditional and all encompassing. At the same time, it is mysterious and miraculous. The more we study God's love, the more we find it is simply perfect; and, we are not.

In Jonah we see rebellion, apathy, denial, and anger. The wayward prophet falls into these self-induced traps even though he is a professed believer of God. Worse yet, he is a leader and called by God to lead people to forgiveness and mercy. He ends up leading people astray.
How is such a disconnect possible?

Good Friday is a celebration of Jesus' persecution and death upon the cross. It is a time of mourning and lament. Together and individually, we acknowledge our need for forgiveness and the hope we have in Him alone.
In this special message, recorded at our Good Friday worship service, we read of the various ways people responded to Jesus' final moments. Then, we are confronted with the reality that we too have chosen a similar response that is either, betrayal, denial, or rejection.
As a CAUTION, during this message, you will hear the sound of those in attendance hammering nails into the cross. We did this as a way of crucifying our own guilt along with Jesus. It was a heartfelt moment of penitence. Listening to this on a podcast may evoke some powerful emotions. It certainly did for those of us in attendance. I invite you to lean into it and consider how, you too, may respond to the message of Jesus Christ.

Maundy Thursday is a celebration of Jesus' Last Supper with His disciples. In this message, we look at Jesus' final prayer, recorded for us in John 17. He prays to be glorified, He prays for his disciples, and He prays for all believers. His prayer for us reminds us of our calling as Christians and helps highlight the importance of Easter. Importantly, it help us see the continued message of God's complete love for all in Jesus' teaching.

The Bible urges us to be united and to be one with Christ. However, we live in a world filled with messages of division. We are increasingly challenged to think of one another, not as neighbors and friends, but as competition. We are divided by politics, media, and opinions.

When our faith is placed in Christ, He becomes our only option for moving forward.
Preaching from parts of Hebrews 10, 11, and 12, we are then challenged to take a step of faith as we move forward with God together.

- The God of hope.
- The God of mercy.
- The God of forgiveness.
- The God of light burdens.
- The God of absolute love.

We had an unexpected snowstorm come in on Sunday morning. Many of our people were unable to join us for worship; necessity is the mother of invention. I hope this is to start of something new and a great tool for our community, as well as those wanting to learn more about Jesus.
My sermon, again unedited and a bit choppy in spots, is based on Hebrews 11:23-29. It is part of a series on Biblical faith called "Forward By Faith." Join us as we explore the Biblical story of Moses as an example of faith in context for today.
