Faith is engaged in the world, in relationship to others, and as a source of meaning and purpose as we discern the good work that God has for us to do.

The Apostle Paul found himself in prison and wrote a letter to the church in Ephesus. This church and this city was a launching point for Paul's ministry to the Mediterranean world, and this letter is a seminal work that provides a wonderful understanding of Paul's revolutionary theology.
As a reformed Pharisee, Paul intimately knows the Hebrew Scriptures. As one who encountered the living Christ, Paul has a high Christology. And it is this dynamic combination that moves Paul to emphasize an embodied theology of being IN CHRIST.
Each week we will explore a chapter - highlighting a pertinent topic. This will not be an exhaustive study of the letter to the Ephesians. It is recommended that you read along as we go.

BODIES | Resisting & Insisting
The word BODIES is multifaceted. Each one of us is a body. Collectively we comprise a body. Spiritually, we are to 'take eat, this is my body' and we are to be the body of Christ.
A BODY is also what they call you when a name is too dignifying for their hurtful purposes. Cells and cages full of bodies. Not somebodies, just bodies.
Over the course of the next 46 days, from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, we will explore what it looks like for us to resist and insist that all bodies should experience good news. We will explore what it means to become a body (both communally and spiritually) that resists systemic injustice and insists on joy and generativity.

BODIES | Resisting & Insisting
The word BODIES is multifaceted. Each one of us is a body. Collectively we comprise a body. Spiritually, we are to 'take eat, this is my body' and we are to be the body of Christ.
A BODY is also what they call you when a name is too dignifying for their hurtful purposes. Cells and cages full of bodies. Not somebodies, just bodies.
Over the course of the next 46 days, from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, we will explore what it looks like for us to resist and insist that all bodies should experience good news. We will explore what it means to become a body (both communally and spiritually) that resists systemic injustice and insists on joy and generativity.
That exploration starts with Ash Wednesday. The themes found in this episode highlight the traditional disciplines of the lenten journey towards Easter - Fasting, Prayer, and Service.

The story of Job is a hard story about suffering and loss. It's also about Job's relationship with God. Is God transactional - do good and good things happen, do evil and bad things happen? Or, is God something more? And if God is something more, what does that mean for us - as image bearers of the Divine?

In the poetic beginning of the Bible, humans are said to be 'made in the image of God' - the IMAGO DEI. What does that mean? Why is that significant? How does that impact what it means to be human?
Maybe...If we understand the characteristics of God, we will have a better understanding of who we are supposed to be.
Maybe...If we understand how God has shown up in the world, we will have a better understanding of how we are to show up in the world.
Maybe...If we (in a similar capacity to Moses in Exodus 33) see where God has been, we will have a better understanding of where we should be going.

The Parable of New Wineskins seems to be about abandoning the old and replacing it with the new. But what if the old and new are both needed? What happens when our traditions are not to be lost when our imagination invites new growth?

MONEY. WEALTH. RICHES. Whether we want to believe it or not, our place in history, our place in the world, puts us in the category of the wealthy. We can always look to someone with more...but Jesus gave this parable to poor, subjugated peasants in first century Palestine...so we don't have an excuse not to engage the hard realities of what Jesus is saying.
But what if Jesus isn't simply against wealth?!
Could this parable be more nuanced than that?

On Saturday, June 14th, we woke in Minnesota to the devastating news that Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark had been murdered, and that Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were in critical condition after being shot.
The question that lingered on my mind was, 'How do we move towards grace?'
There isn't an easy or simple answer, and this might not be the time for one. But as followers of Jesus and as those who believe in the ever-present reality of grace, we struggle to move in the direction of love and justice even when we might not want to.
Naming truth. Modeling love. Witnesses to grace.

Easter @ Peace | 7 Miles
The road between Jerusalem and Emmaus was 7 miles. Two of Jesus' disciples didn't remain in town long enough to see if the rumors of resurrection were true. Instead, they started making their way back to Emmaus. And suddenly an incognito Jesus was among them and acted like he didn't know what had happened in the city that weekend. Shocked and sarcastic, the two disciples share their sadness. But Jesus calls them out for not trusting the scriptures and proceeds to explain how suffering and hardship were necessary for the Christ by unpacking the entire Old Testament.
These 7 miles were unforgettable and life changing. What would our 7 miles look like? What would be said to us?

Most of us have heard the stories of Adam & Eve, David & Goliath, and Jesus Walking on Water. We've grown up on these stories and they've shaped our faith from a young age.
But when was the last time we explored the most common stories of the Bible? Too often, we hear these stories as kids and then we move on to the less recognizable stories or the more complex concepts - like parables or the Beatitudes.
In this series, we will dive a little deeper into the most recognizable stories. We will see what they have to teach us now that we are adults. We just might be surprised by what we see and what we learn.

This phrase was uttered at the end of a long discussion about the grieving mother Rizpah. A group of pastors had discussed the tragic story of Rizpah's great loss and her courage to model love and justice in the face of great political and personal turmoil. And at the end, a hush came over the group as we sat in the midst of her story, thinking about the reality...'if it wasn't for the women..."
Too often the stories of women in the Bible are side-notes, supporting characters in the larger stories about the patriarchs of the faith. We know all too well the stories of Abraham, Moses, and David; but little about the stories of Rebekah, Vashti, Ruth, and others...some who even go unnamed in the text.
This series is about 5 women who helped shape the trajectory of the faith. Through their courage, leadership, example, and faith, they have shaped history and how we understand what it means to follow Christ.

On Sunday, November 10th, Pastor Jason opened the service with some reflections on the national election that resulted in the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States.

How we 'vote' on November 6th and Everyday...
Like many of you, I was up late into the morning hours watching the results of the 2024 Presidential Election and other down-ballot races. I've spent the better part of today trying to put into words what I feel and how I am able to 'show up' for people in this moment. I've read some social media posts from friends, connected with a few people close to me, but mostly tried to just process my own complex (and sleep-deprived) thoughts. I keep circling back to the final message of the Politics & Power sermon series and the story of Rizpah...the mother who lost her two sons to a political maneuver, but courageously kept loving and serving and showing up until those in power finally took notice.
For some people the results last night were disheartening, jarring, and frustrating.
For some people the results last night were vindicating, exciting, and thrilling.
And still for others, the results last night create real fear.
I'd like to take a moment to write to each of those groups of people. These thoughts are one-part pastoral, one-part personal, and all meant to be given in love.
To those who are disheartened, jarred, and frustrated...
Your heart will hurt when hope feels dashed. Anger will be quick to rise up from your gut, and wants to lash out at whatever target is closest. Disillusionment and bewilderment will flood your senses. It's okay to cry, shake your fist, and want to scream. It's okay if these feelings last longer than other people think they should. It's okay if you feel these things in your body and need some self-care...our bodies tend to keep score when our brains tell us we should move on. It's also okay if you find yourself doing better than you expected.
Feel all of the feelings. Take all the deep breaths. Go for all the long walks. Listen to all the podcasts or ignore everything. But then the question will become - what are you going to do now? If you're angry, where will you direct that anger. Will it go towards making the divides in our country more deeply engrained? Or, will it go towards reaching out to the hurting and scared and being a safe place? Will it go towards the hard next step of getting back to the work of compassion? How will you 'vote' on Nov 6th and everyday hereafter?
To those who are vindicated, excited, and thrilled...
Last night was a big night. You received good news after good news after good news. And there is excitement about what the next days, weeks, months, and four years will hold. There is hope that your vision for this country could come to fruition. It's good to be happy.
For some of you, this excitement is because you have been all-in! You want to see all the promises kept. You want to see vindication at every level. For some of you, this moment is a tempered one. You are glad for the result, but nervous about what it could actually mean. Which parts of the vision were hyperbole and which were serious? Which promises were to attract votes, and which promises could really come to pass? Will the policies that you support be the ones acted upon, or will the parts that caused you pause be the first to be pushed forward?
Please remember that in winning there is a responsibility to lead. And leadership is about service. Seek understanding from those who are hurting. Don't reject them or demean them. Give them space, while being ready to be hospitable. And even though your candidate(s) won on election night, you still get to 'vote' on November 6th and everyday hereafter. Be mindful of your posture.
To those who are fearful...
To my friends who are undocumented and have worked hard to provide a better life for your family...you are seen.
To my friends with Temporary Protected Status and have lived here for years or decades...you are seen.
To my friends who are trans and worry about access to health care and feel attacked by the millions of dollars in attack ads...you are seen.
To my friends who are women and worry about your reproductive health and access to life-saving care...you are seen.
To my friends who are concerned about the future of our planet and the needed response to climate change...you are seen.
To my friends who have been affected by gun violence and worry that change will never come...you are seen.
To my many other friends who are fearful for the myriad of reasons I failed to mention...we are here for you.
Don't be in fear alone. Reach out and find safe spaces. When you are able, tell your story. You are a Rizpah!
November 5th was a day that our country voted. But tomorrow and everyday hereafter, we all continue to 'vote' by living into the type of body politic we want to be. May we choose one another. May we choose love. May we choose hope.

This phrase was uttered at the end of a long discussion about the grieving mother Rizpah. A group of pastors had discussed the tragic story of Rizpah's great loss and her courage to model love and justice in the face of great political and personal turmoil. And at the end, a hush came over the group as we sat in the midst of her story, thinking about the reality...'if it wasn't for the women..."
Too often the stories of women in the Bible are side-notes, supporting characters in the larger stories about the patriarchs of the faith. We know all too well the stories of Abraham, Moses, and David; but little about the stories of Rebekah, Vashti, Ruth, and others...some who even go unnamed in the text.
This series is about 5 women who helped shape the trajectory of the faith. Through their courage, leadership, example, and faith, they have shaped history and how we understand what it means to follow Christ.

This summer at Peace we will focus on spiritual training. Like our physical bodies need exercise and proper nutrition, our spiritual lives need to be built up. The Apostle Paul talks about training to win the race (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).
- What does it mean to win?
- How do we train?
- How should we run?
Pastor and author, Gary Thomas, wrote a book called Sacred Pathways, describing and outlining nine ways that people naturally engage faith and experience God. As people are unique, the ways we engage God and faith will be different for many of us. Therefore, we will not only learn about, but experience the nine pathways this summer.
Not every week will have a sermon...most weeks won't. Instead, be prepared to experience faith in unique ways.
Our hope is that as the political and societal atmosphere can get contentious during a challenging election season, if our spiritual lives (our spiritual muscles) are built up, we can show up with more space for grace, kindness, and self-control. We can offer a better path of love, belonging, justice, and mercy...not just a path of bitterness and cynicism.

In this final sermon of our series: Lessons in the Leaves, we dive into the story of Jesus cursing the fig tree. Why does Jesus do this? It seems like such an odd thing for him to do. Is there a lesson he was teaching people in that moment? Could that lesson still resonate with us today?

This episode features special guest, Reverend Cullen Tanner. Cullen is currently the Technology and Ministry Specialist for the MN Annual Conference. He uses his background as a pastor, church planter, youth director, and worship leader to inform his work in equipping churches for digital ministry. Cullen was the planter and pastor at Roots & Branches in Anoka until this past September. He will be starting as the new pastor at Champlin UMC on June 30. Cullen lives in Andover with his 4 kids and his wife, Jenni, where they own and operate Inspire Academy of Music.

The Lord's Prayer is one of those special passages of Scripture. It's arguably the most memorized portion of the Bible, while also being one of the most scrutinized. The first line of the prayer has been a point of tension and a recitation of comfort.
Often in the first century, disciples would ask a Rabbi how to pray. Not because they didn't know how to pray, but because how a Rabbi prayed spoke to their theology and understanding of God. Exploring the prayer of Jesus has much to teach us about how we know God and how we live out this faith.

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
And keep us from scapegoating others to get ahead or using our privilege and power to keep others down, let us not use violence to seek peace; but let our trajectory be fixated on your loving kindness.

New Beginnings | New Expectations
The New Year offers a fresh start. But what if our fresh start isn't a quest to return to some former version of ourselves that we long for, but instead should be filled with new expectations, a new trajectory for who we are.
Mary and Joseph knew that Jesus was the long awaited Messiah, the Christ. But instead of returning to an Israel of old, Jesus was to be hope for all humankind, a revolution of love and justice and mercy.
When launching into a new beginning, we need to remember who we are, not return to who we've been. A new beginning might also require a new endeavor, but it shouldn't be out of character.
Jesus wasn't returning Israel to the time of King David, but was fulfilling the promise of Abraham - to be a blessing to all people.
Let's start the new year well!

Retrace | There are six passages in the Bible that are often used to harm and exclude people in the LGBTQIA+ community. This fall we will retrace these passages, diving into the context and cultures in which they are found. Through this process we may find that these passages aren't condemning or shaming, but they illuminate our understanding of how we are to love one another and become a grace-infused people.

Sex and Power | 1 Timothy 1.10 and 1 Corinthians 6.9 | Translating a passage that is over 2,000 years old is hard. And these passages are an incredible example of that. Words that our modern translators have translated as 'men sleeping with men' or 'homosexuality', are words that even in their own setting were hard to unpack and understand. So let's sit in the complexity of these words for a minute and ask what they could mean.
Then, let's ask what Paul may be doing in these verses if we take them as part of a whole. We might find that Paul isn't condemning a 21st century loving relationship between two committed partners, but instead Paul is challenging communities and people to stop trying to assert power over one another.

Idols and Partisanship | Romans 1.26-27 | The church in Rome is fractured between Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians. Paul is trying to help them unify. His tactic? Help them recognize that BOTH groups are in need of Christ. To do that, he deploys a crafty rhetorical tactic that sets-up the Jewish Christians. But that tactic hinges on utilizing some cultural customs prevalent at that time and using their own biases against them.
This passage is probably the toughest to retrace. It comes across as the most straight forward. But maybe there's more to it than what we read on the surface. Maybe this passage is an effort to bring people together.
And we could use some of that in our world, in our politics, in our families right now.

Laws, Rules, Codes, and Community | Leviticus 18.22 and 20.13 | Israel had laws, codes, and rules for how they were to live. And some of those expectations seem to exclude people. Do those apply to us today? How should we understand these expectations? What can they teach us about how we are called to live today?

Hospitality and Harm | Genesis 19 | The story of Sodom being destroyed is one of the most common passages used to exclude and shame the LGBTQ+ community. Though this interpretation is largely critiqued, even by conservative scholars, there is still a stigma attached to this story. It's violence and total disregard for human decency leaves us asking many questions.
But contrasted in the larger context of the story of Abraham, there's possibly a different message for us. It's more than a story of harm, warning us not to be power-hungry, violent people. But there's a posture of hospitality we can learn from this story.

Thankful by Joe Cocker is a simple song about gratitude for the simple things in life like taking a breath in the morning, and the larger things in life like a relationship that lasts.
Gratitude is such a needed spiritual discipline. So often the negative and troubling things in life stick in our brain - they shape how we see the world. Gratitude and being thankful is a way to rewire our brain towards the good and meaningful.
Paul encourages the church in Philippi to do this when he concludes his letter to the Philippians by writing to 'think on these things' (4.8).

Fields of Gold by Sting is a beautiful song about a couple that grows old together; and as their time is coming to a close, they hope to remember one another when they look out over the barley field just beyond their window. It's a song about belonging, feeling grounded and connected, feeling known.
In many respects, that's the journey that God has us on, to make home and belonging for people. We are invited to bring God's kingdom (kin-dom) on earth as it is in heaven. But what does that look like and how do we walk this road?
In Matthew 13, Jesus tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that is planted In a field. Maybe this imagery will give us insight?

Awake My Soul by the band Mumford and Sons begs the question, how can we keep our faith when all the rules of our religion have seemingly failed us? (At least that's how I'm interpreting this piece of art.)
In a similar way, David is confronted with a strange moment in a cave. He's followed all the rules, done everything his king and country have asked of him and rose to prominence, but now he's being stalked by Saul the king, who wants to kill him. And in this cave, David has Saul within his sights - he could kill Saul.
But love compels him to chart a different course. In Psalm 57, we read David's anguish and hope while hiding out in the cave.
We will all have times in life when the path we thought doesn't work anymore, when following the rules has failed us. What then? What will be our next step? Will we keep our soul or lose it down a path of vengeance and despair? Or like David, will we choose for this to be the moment that our soul is awoken to love?!

Here Am I Lord is a well-known hymn based on Isaiah 6.8. It's about calling, hearing God's invitation for good work. But in order to answer that call we need the autonomy to answer, the creativity to know if the call is ours to do, and to see the purpose of that call.

Thank God I Do by Lauren Daigle, is a song about identity, a song about being known. Often in life we can get knocked down or things don't go the way we expect or hope, and the story we start to tell ourselves isn't true or filled with God's love.
These stories have a way of working on us in an unhealthy way. But what if we told ourselves a different story? Like the Apostle Paul in the book of Romans, who tells the people facing division and persecution that they are more than conquerers and that nothing can separate them from God's love.

A Place At The Table by Shirley Erena Murray, is a modern day hymn about the expanding and growing table of Christ that is offered to all!
In the book of Luke, Jesus is confronting some marginalizing habits and patterns of the Pharisees. They believe the table is exclusive, only for the elite and the perfect. And Jesus is going to challenge their expectations with a parable about a dinner host who invites EVERYONE!
At the end of this message, we talked about a situation with our Little Free Library. The books have been emptied on three occasions - so we decided to respond - but maybe not in the way one would expect.

Cat's In The Cradle: Harry Chapin said that he stole a few of the lyrics from his wife and that the song is dedicated to his son Josh. And he also said that this song terrifies him!
The theme of what we pass on to the next generation is not only a modern day parable, but it's a central component of what the LORD tells the people when they receive the 10 Commandments on Mt. Sinai.
Steadfast love will be given to the 1,000th generation, but iniquity will be given to the 3rd and 4th generation.

Help | With A Little Help From My Friends | All You Need Is Love | Let It Be
We specifically looked at the type of love that is shared between friends...the family that we choose. And Jesus models for us how to love as a friend...but it's hard to see until we dig deep into the Scriptures and actually look at the Greek words for love.

A Cold & Broken Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen wrote a haunting, beautiful, and deeply meaningful song called ‘Hallelujah’. It’s been covered and recreated countless times; many people have a favorite version: from Jeff Buckley to Pentatonix. This song resonates with people because it speaks to a deep ache in all of us… Even when things are at their worst, can I still say Hallelujah? This question is at the heart of the prophet Habakkuk, who longs for God to intervene and make things right...but still chooses to praise God when the answer isn't swift.

With humility, gentleness, patience, and love, Paul calls upon the church in Ephesus to be ONE. Unity is at the forefront of being a Christ-centered people. So often our world only looks divided, and Christians are often leading the charge of divisiveness. How can that change?
Paul gives us a beautiful aspiration, a vision of what we can be.
Jesus shows us how that takes root in the real world.

It's a question about what do we do with the power that we have. Jesus has power, but he doesn't use it for his own gain. He moves towards those who are hurting.

Forgiveness is a BIG topic, one that we can't circle back to often enough. One of the most important components of forgiveness is when one offers an apology. But an apology is more than a quick 'I'm sorry' so we can move on. Apologies should disrupt things. They should disrupt the working order of things that have often been harmful. They should disrupt us, personally.

Prayer is one of those things that we know a lot about, but can be hard to understand at the same time.
In Matthew 6, Jesus tells the disciples about prayer. He cautions them not to put on a mask and pretend to have it all together. Prayer should be a move towards vulnerability. Jesus also warns them against making prayer a formula for getting God's attention. It doesn't work like that.
But in the end, what does prayer do? Does it change the future? Is that possible? Does prayer change us? Does it make us capable of facing the reality of this messy life?

In Exodus 16, the people of Israel have been liberated from Egypt for about 18 months, but they are starving in the wilderness. God promises to send manna (bread) from heaven each day. But on the 6th day there will be enough for two days so they can have a day of rest on the 7th day. God establishes a new rhythm for the people.
This new rhythm, this rest, is a holy disruption.
- What does it look like for us to rest?
- What are the barriers to taking a Sabbath or taking time to rest?
- How can we feed our soul in the season that we find ourselves?

'I am the resurrection.'
Two things are immediately odd about this statement.
1 - Resurrections don't seem to be a regular occurrence. So other than Jesus, or our hope that resurrection will happen at the end of all things, what does this mean for us NOW?
2 - This is actually not the crowning statement from John. This isn't 'I AM' statement seven...it's actually the fifth one. WHY? Is there any logic or reason behind this statement coming in the middle of the book and not simply at the end where we would assume it to land?
Could resurrection be, not only an invitation to a life that comes after death, but an invitation into a way of living now that bring heaven to earth? Maybe resurrection isn't just something that happened or will happen, but IS HAPPENING!

'I am the vine.'
There is always something mystical about what John is doing. We are Invited to a faith that isn't simply paint-by-numbers or straight-forward doctrines, but a more complex or mysterious faith that must be lived and breathed. We are invited to relationship with the Christ who comes near and empowers us.
This sixth 'I am' statement opens us up to the need to be pruned...to have our blind spots pointed out to us. It's an invitation to be transformed...not just agree to a transaction.
This statement also invites us to 'abide' with Christ. We aren't just cognitively agreeing to a set of beliefs or rules, but we are flowing and interacting with Christ. What is this mystery of abiding with Christ and how could it impact our lives?

'I am the way the truth and the life.'
This passage is a popular one. It has often be used as evidence of the exclusiveness of the Christian faith. But what if we looked at this passage differently? Is it possible to hold two interpretations at the same time and find a path forward? Could this way of seeing things help us in other areas of our life?

What does it mean to be a 'gate'? This seems like a fairly abstract thing for Jesus to say. But when we look at what he's saying contextually (both in regards to 1st century shepherding practices and theologically), we start to see that Jesus is preparing people for the abundant life, while cautioning them from a trajectory of destruction.
