Are supplements really the key to better health, or has clever marketing convinced us that we need more than we actually do?
In this thought-provoking episode of Jen and Dan's Natural Healing with Plants, we take a closer look at the supplement industry, the marketing claims that surround it, and why we believe food should almost always come first.
Jen shares a recent experience after being recommended a long list of expensive supplements even though the research behind many of them was surprisingly weak. Together, we explore when supplements may truly be helpful, when they may simply be draining your wallet, and why returning to whole, nutrient-dense foods is often the better place to begin.

The 2025 Dietary Guidelines: When the Science Gets Compromised
The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans are out and on the surface, they sound familiar: eat whole foods, limit sugar, drink more water. But when you look closer, the contradictions start stacking up.
In this episode of Jen and Dan’s Natural Healing with Plants, we break down what the federal guidelines say, what they don’t say, and where they diverge from the scientific recommendations they’re legally required to follow.
We unpack:
- Why plant-based protein recommendations were largely discarded
- How saturated fat is “limited” while full-fat dairy, butter, and tallow are promoted
- Why removing vegetable subgroups changes everything (yes, potatoes can now check the same box as greens)
- What “drink less alcohol” actually means when no definition is given
- How over half of the advisory committee’s recommendations were ignored without clear justification
- Why these changes matter for school lunches, food costs, and public health, not just our personal choice
This episode isn’t about dietary ideology but transparency, science, and the real-world impact of national nutrition policy.
If you care about whole foods, plant-forward nutrition, and guidance that actually aligns with evidence, this conversation matters.

Nettles have been one of my favorites for years. If you’ve ever wondered why some people swear by this humble, mineral-rich plant, this episode will make you see it differently.
I’m breaking down what makes nettles so special, why I lean on them right now, and how they help the body stay grounded when life gets a little chaotic. I’ll also walk you through how I use them, who tends to benefit the most from daily nettles, and the situations where this herb isn’t the right fit.
In this episode, I’m exploring:
- Why nettles outperform a lot of “flashier” herbs
- How holiday stress, sugar, travel, and viral exposure drain your mineral reserves
- The way minerals influence mood, immunity, cravings, and calm
- My go-to morning nettle blend and why I don’t skip it this time of year
- The types of people who usually notice the biggest difference with daily nettles
- The simplest ways to prepare nettles so your body actually uses what’s inside
- When nettles aren’t the right herb and what to watch for
This is a good episode for anyone feeling a little depleted, overstimulated, undernourished, or just curious about how one plant can do so much by giving us what we’re often missing.

Welcome to this week's episode of our podcast! In today's discussion, we delve into the topic of program hopping and the significance of maintaining a long-term commitment. Our conversation is inspired by personal experiences and observations, shedding light on the challenges and consequences of constantly switching programs.
We begin by acknowledging our own tendencies to program hop and the nervousness that arises when others fail to stick to a particular program. Sharing anecdotes, we highlight the importance of consistency and commitment to achieve desired results.
One particular story stands out, where someone we know was advised by a functional medicine doctor to go gluten-free due to a common yet often undetected virus called Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Initially hesitant and confused about dietary changes, this person eventually committed to the recommended diet, including the elimination of allergens like gluten and soy. The positive outcomes were significant—weight loss, reduced pain, and even avoiding a scheduled surgery. However, when stress entered their life, they returned to their old habits, consuming gluten, soy, and processed foods, resulting in unbearable pain and the consideration of surgery once again.
The underlying theme emerges: there are effective solutions, but they require long-term commitment. We express frustration over clients who incorporate new information from various sources, disrupting the progress we've made together. We emphasize the need to avoid hastily adopting new practices without thorough research and understanding. We advocate for evidence-based approaches, considering long-term benefits and sustainability.
Moreover, we discuss the individuality of health journeys. What works for one person may not work for another, emphasizing the importance of personalized approaches. While one of us follows a whole-food, plant-based diet, others may require specific modifications. It's crucial to find what suits each individual and supports their personal health goals.
The conversation then shifts towards weight loss and the pitfalls of pursuing instant gratification. We explore the implications of rapid weight loss, including sagging skin and potential health risks. Slow and steady progress, supported by balanced nutrition, is highlighted as the key to sustainable results.
Recognizing the allure of quick fixes and the desire for instant gratification, we acknowledge the psychological and emotional factors that contribute to program hopping. We speculate that self-sabotage might play a role, with individuals unconsciously fearing the changes that may accompany improved health and weight loss.
In the latter part of the episode, we explore strategies to help clients stay committed to their programs. We emphasize the importance of trusting the process, celebrating progress made, and reflecting on how far they have come. We suggest providing reassurance, reminding clients that even though progress may be slower than expected, it is still progress. Sharing success stories and videos of individuals who have stuck to their routines can also serve as motivation and inspiration.
Ultimately, the key takeaway from this episode is the significance of long-term commitment to achieve sustainable results. While there may be temptations to switch programs or seek instant solutions, embracing consistency and trusting the process are crucial for long-term success.
Join us next week as we dive into another fascinating topic! Remember, it's the journey, not just the destination, that shapes our well-being. Stay committed, and keep thriving!

If there’s one takeaway from today, it’s that healing isn’t just about what you eat or how much you exercise. You can do all of that perfectly, but if you’re holding onto hate, anger, or other negative emotions, you will block your own healing. It’s like trying to fill a cup with holes in the bottom. You have to patch those emotional holes for the healing to stay.
Healing is a whole-body, whole-mind process. When we talk about natural healing, we’re talking about mind, body, and spirit. Release the old emotions, forgive, affirm the positive, and watch how that shifts your health

In this episode of "Jen and Dan's Natural Healing with Plants," we embark on an exploration of the fascinating world of berberine. This natural compound, found in various plants, has garnered much attention for its potential health benefits. However, as we emphasize throughout the episode, berberine is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
We delve into the remarkable potential of berberine, which has shown promise in areas like blood sugar control, heart health, and weight management. Yet, a critical takeaway is that individuality matters greatly in natural health. What might work wonders for one person may not be suitable for another due to differences in genetics, physiology, and overall health.
Our hosts, Jen and Dan, offer invaluable advice on how to approach berberine cautiously. They stress the importance of starting with a low dose, carefully monitoring your body's response, and, most importantly, consulting with a healthcare provider who can provide personalized guidance.
Furthermore, this episode explores alternatives to berberine, emphasizing the wealth of natural healing options available. In the world of holistic wellness, no one remedy fits all, making it essential to find approaches that align with your unique needs and preferences.
As we wrap up, Jen and Dan want to leave you with a vital message: natural healing is a deeply individual journey. While berberine holds promise, it's not a universal solution. Your path to optimal health is unique, and the most crucial step is discovering the approaches that resonate with you.
Tune in to this episode for an enlightening discussion on berberine and the importance of personalized health in "Jen and Dan's Natural Healing with Plants." Jennifer, Wholistic Jen, grew up eating the standard American diet but loved ALL foods and all things concerning health and fitness. Even after taking graduate level courses, she was still eating foods that she thought were healthy, but later learned they were not healthy for her. She had gestational diabetes with her first child and was shocked. She had none of the risk factors related to gestational diabetes and couldn't figure out how she could have this disease. After her second child, she was frustrated that her husband wouldn't eat healthy. She wanted healthy foods in the home and to set a good example for their kids, so she tricked him into going to the doctor to get a physical with her. She knew the doctor would tell him he had to change. Instead...the doctor told him he was the picture of health, and she had something he didn't want to diagnose. She had to go to a specialist. She was scared and frustrated. She was an expert in health after all! Her insurance wouldn't pay for her to go to the recommended specialist and the specialist wouldn't let her pay out of pocket. Not she was SCARED! What is going on with my body and how?
Jen found a doctor who told her she had an autoimmune disease, there is no cure, and she had to have surgery or radiation. After refusing those options, he agreed to a chemotherapy. He said most people don't tolerate it well, and she could only stay on it for 1 to 1 1/2 years. She took the meds and went home and told her husband that she wasn't doing what she's supposed to be doing. She was teaching math at the time, and she's supposed to be helping people with their health. They decided to move and start a farm and start healing people with their food and health.
Jen went in and out of remission. Moving was stressful and Jen got really sick. After going in and out of remission, Jen had a car accident and couldn't get her weight or health under control. Her doctor kept insisting that food and lifestyle have nothing to do with it and even told Jen that she would die if she didn't have radiation. What Jen's doctor did not tell her was that she was only trading one autoimmune disease for a another one. Right after radiation, Jen's doctor retired.
Jen's new doctor was just as frustrated as Jen was that they had not found each other earlier. Diet and lifestyle had everything to do with autoimmune illness, and while they couldn't go back and undo the radiation, they could use natural methods to reverse the current autoimmune illness.
Jen now works with clients one on one and in groups to help them reverse their illness. Diet and lifestyle have everything to do with it!

Jennifer, Wholistic Jen, struggled with finding her passion and purpose after graduating from college in the mid 90's. Her grandmother challenged her and told her to do some soul searching, and she would help her go back to school. After realizing that she LOVED all things food, fitness, and health, Jen went to school to get a masters in health science and started working with herbs. After graduating, she once again didn't know how to use this passion, so she went to culinary arts school. While taking cooking classes, she was offered a job teaching math. She taught there and went on to get a masters in math education and gave up on following her passion even though she was always enrolled in new health and nutrition classes. In 2007, she was frustrated with working, feeding her family healthy foods, and her husband's McDonald's daily habit. She tried to trick him into getting a physical and discovered that she was the one with an "incurable" illness. All she could think was that she wasn't doing what she was meant to do. She and her husband quit their jobs and moved to the country to start a farm, so they could feed their family and friends healthy, nourishing foods and teach them all about health and nutrition.
Jen continues to learn and take classes every day, and she works with clients one on one and in groups to help them get to the root of their illness. "There are NO incurables, only incurable people." Jen went on to the School of Natural Healing, became board certified as a health educator, and is currently an intern at the Institute of Nutritional Endocrinology.
