“School Mental Health Works!” is a quick-dip podcast featuring dialogues on school mental health in Wisconsin.
Produced by the Coalition for Expanding School Based Mental Health in Wisconsin, the series highlights the successes and challenges experienced by a range of partners as communities collaborate and show that school mental health works!
Episodes feature Coalition board representatives and invited guests – each bringing a unique perspective and experience within Wisconsin’s systems for supporting school mental health.
Through thoughtful discussions between mental health providers, school professionals and parents representing lived experience, the series explores each of the six components of Wisconsin’s comprehensive school mental health model including: 1) a continuum of mental health supports; 2) collaboration; 3) needs assessment and resource mapping; 4) mental health referral pathways; 5) sustainability; and 6) data.
When a crisis occurs in a school or community, staff and students need support. Our episode today features a conversation between Trish Kilpin, MSSW, CTM, Executive Director of the Office of School Safety at the Wisconsin Department of Justice and Chris Mand, Director of Student Services at Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District. Trish and Chris share how schools can prepare to effectively respond to a crisis before it occurs, promote recovery for students and staff through universal supports, and engage community and regional partners in prevention and response.

As another school year comes to a close, we are taking time to reflect and acknowledge that “right service, right time” isn’t always possible in school mental health. Our guest today is Rachel Zwicky, parent advocate and lived experience representative on the Coalition Board. Rachel lives in rural northern Wisconsin and joins Kathy to discuss how she has navigated working with her children’s school to support their mental health when traditional resources aren’t immediately available.

Today we are joined by Libby Strunz, School Mental Health Consultant with WI Department of Public Instruction, to discuss the final component of the Wisconsin School Mental Health Framework: Needs Assessment and Resource Mapping. Kathy Markeland, Coalition Board member and Executive Director of WI Assn of Family & Children’s Agencies inquires about why a Resource Map is a vital part of comprehensive school mental health and how school staff can create one by leveraging the knowledge of students, family and community partners. The process of creating (and updating) a resource map can feel overwhelming at first, but in the long-term it can help make the right resources available to students at the right time. Finally, Libby guides us to consider social influencers of mental health to ensure resource maps and school mental health services remain equity-centered and trauma-informed.

Comprehensive school-based mental health initiatives seek to advance mental well-being throughout the school community. At the core of this work are relationships and building a sense of belonging for all students. In this episode, Allyson Forseth, Behavioral Health Initiatives Manager with the WI Association of Family and Children’s Agencies is joined by Dr. Armando Hernández, a Licensed Psychologist and Equity-Centered Leader with 20 years of experience specializing in culturally responsive practice, behavioral health consultation, and systems change. Their conversation explores concrete initiatives to grow diversity (mindset), equity (outcomes), and inclusion (relationship) within our school communities, as well as how these strategies serve as a foundation for student success and community connectedness. Acknowledging that this is a challenging and sometimes divisive topic, Dr. Hernández brings a perspective grounded in his cross-system work and invites us to center on curiosity, respect, and relationship while boldly exploring resistance within ourselves and our systems.

Communities and schools seeking mental health solutions for students are true math whizzes - “blending and braiding” funding from philanthropy, local levy, state & federal grants and insurance to deliver the right answer for success.
In the fifth episode, Coalition Board Chair Julie Hueller (Manager, Racine Collaborative for Children's Mental Health) welcomes guests Kristen Waters Guetschow PhD, Director of Mental Health, Madison Metropolitan School District and Scott Radke, Chief Clinical Officer, Catalpa Health for a dialogue on lessons learned and challenges ahead. Kristen and Scott share the unique, problem-solving approaches that have emerged in their communities to provide a full range of mental health supports to students. Their conversation sheds light on the complexity and fragility of current funding structures and the importance of continued efforts to find solutions and bring sustainable services into Wisconsin’s future.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction defines the “Continuum of Mental Health Supports” as mental health promotion, early intervention, and treatment services, including crisis support. Often organized based on the level of need, the continuum creates a proactive, responsive and flexible web of support for all student’s mental, behavioral, social and emotional strengths and needs as they shift over time, with a focus on building resilience and protective factors rather than categorizing students based on their perceived deficits.
In the fourth episode of our podcast, Carey Jacobson, Director of Clinical Services at Wellpoint Care Network, and Katrina Johnson, Connect Strength Project Manager, discuss how their organizations partner with schools to create a continuum of support. Wellpoint offers Trauma Sensitive Schools training and consultation and also provides school-based mental health services. Katrina is a regional trainer for Sources of Strength, a school-based suicide prevention program with an emphasis on peer leadership and curriculums for elementary and secondary students.
