Wilmington College President Corey Cockerill joins the podcast (again) to share insights on her first 100 days since being officially becoming the college's first inaugurated female president. Although Corey is proud of this source of inspiration for young women, like her own daughter, she stated, "I don't consider my female status as a unique identifier... It wasn't something that defined me... I never felt like I was overcoming being a woman... I just happen to be in fields that I think present challenges that I enjoy."
Corey also gave an update on Wilmington College's involvement with the old Masonic Temple building on Main Street in Wilmington (next to The Murphy Theatre), and shared exciting news of the college's largest financial gift in their 155 year history, a $23 million donation from the late Coach Jerry Scheve, to build a new indoor track facility, ADA accessible entryway, and other athletic upgrades.

Corey Cockerill will be the first inaugurated female president of Wilmington College tomorrow. Randy Sarvis, their amazing PR Director, gave us an exclusive interview with her before the big day!
We learn about her life growing up in rural Knox County, being a journalist in Chillicothe, meeting her husband at 4H camp, and owning her own coffee roasting business that she later sold to Kava Haus.
Corey also shared the college’s vision for a new agricultural and equestrian center on Fife Road in 2028, as well as a strategic plan for an even greater partnership with the local Wilmington community.

Veronica Grabill joined the podcast to share about her role as Chaplain and Volunteer Coordinator at Clinton Memorial Hospital (CMH) in Wilmington, Ohio. Veronica helps support and pray with patients and families at the hospital as well as helps organize essential community volunteer opportunities for the hospital.
Active volunteers range in age from 18 to 90 and work in several departments of the hospital, including the gift shop, medical records, admissions, financial services and others. If you have an interest in volunteering, contact Veronica to set up a time to discuss our areas of need and your interests to make this experience fulfilling and enjoyable.
Additionally, you can expect to complete an application (background check), sign a Volunteer Pledge, and participate in any necessary training.
Denise Stryker joins us after a 2-month retirement (from a 30 year career) to discuss homelessness in Wilmington along with the new director of the Clinton County Homeless Shelter, Amber Taylor (who was previously the assistant director for 18 years). Ruth Brindle with Clinton County Port Authority and Gabe Drake with Blue Sky Construction Management join the podcast to share about the creation on the ‘Wilmington DRIVE Program’ after historic buildings collapsed in both Blanchester and New Vienna. For us, trying to understand WHY Greg Pitzer and Darrell Perry continue to pursuit a sense of peace and justice for the death of Greg’s daughter, Casey Pitzer, has been like trying to drink from a “fire hose” of information and emotions…

Alex Beres became Executive Director of Clinton County Port Authority in February of this year and celebrated the birth of his first daughter at CMH over Easter weekend. With his slicked back hair and fancy suits, some might wonder if Alex was formerly an east coast Mafia Don, but Alex’s roots actually come from rural northern Ohio where he met his now wife. Alex jokes how his now in-laws were impressed that he was on the basketball team in high school and played in a band, but how his wife “could still care less about my guitar playing.”
The Clinton County Port Authority not only manages our commercial airport that was donated after DHL left in 2009, but also acts as our county’s economic development leader to do things like attract (and keep) large employers and developers. Alex first got interested in economic development as a child when he and his father petitioned neighbors to get a rural water co-op to build water lines to their area. “I remember in high school drinking water from the faucet and it was the first time I could ever do that and it was because of infrastructure”, he said.
Alex also remembers his uncle, who worked in economic development for the State of Ohio, visiting between “top secret meetings” with Whirlpool to get them to stay in the area. “I thought that was incredible, almost like being a spy”, he said.
After working several years in Columbus and D.C., Alex is glad to be closer to family and is enjoying his new role in Wilmington. He encourages anyone who wants a tour of the airpark and see what’s new to contact him at aberes@ccportauthority.com.

Jessica also responds to community criticism and misconceptions, including: is Uber and Lyft available in Wilmington?
Real Change Wilmington sits down with Executive Director Eric Guindon from the Clinton County Youth Council (CCYC). To discuss what the CCYC is, debunk common misconceptions, and learn about the life of Eric Guindon.
Guindon started with the CCYC in his own childhood, going to the location to take advantage of the skate park as a middle and high schooler before his graduation from Wilmington High School in 2003. The CCYC is Wilmington's only daily after school program for kids ages 12-18 (middle and high school), that provides a safe space for kids, offers free lessons in the musical and visual arts, promotes and teaches healthy life skills, and is a place for children to model relationships and have adult support outside of a school and home setting. They provide a snack and supper meal daily for kids, and encourage the children to help in the cooking process. These meals also serve as "community time" where the children are encouraged to sit down with no technology and speak about their day.
The current open hours for the CCYC are:
School Year: M–F 3pm to 7pm
Summer: Open 3 days a week 3pm to 7pm (hours vary based on activities)
This interview shows the great side of a community that loves it's youth and wants to see them thrive.
