Boston Ballet Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen announces nine dancer promotions for the 2023–2024 season:
Soloist Chisako Oga has been promoted to the rank of principal dancer.
Second soloist Sun Woo Lee has been promoted to the rank of soloist.
Artists Tyson Clark, Louise Hautefeuille, Sage Humphries, Sangmin Lee, and Daniel Rubin have been promoted to the rank of second soloists.
Boston Ballet II dancers Brooke Wilson and Sydney Williams have been promoted to artists of the Company.
“It is a great honor to watch these talented dancers develop into wonderful and versatile artists,” said Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen. “I am very proud of what they have accomplished, and I know our audiences will enjoy seeing them continue to shine on stage.”

In 2016, Oga joined Cincinnati Ballet, where she quickly rose to the position of principal dancer. She was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2019. She joined Boston Ballet as a second soloist in 2019 and was promoted to soloist in 2020. She will return next season as a principal dancer.
Sun Woo Lee of Seoul, South Korea trained at Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts, Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, and Korea National University of Arts. Lee joined Boston Ballet in 2018 as an artist of the Company, was promoted to second soloist in 2020, and will return next season as a soloist.
Tyson Clark of Somerville, Massachusetts began his early dance training at Mary Flynn Murphy Dance Studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. He also trained at the Gold School with Project Moves Dance Company in Brockton, Massachusetts. Clark studied with Boston Ballet School from 2008 to 2011 and returned in 2015 on full merit scholarship as a Boston Ballet School Trainee. Clark joined Boston Ballet II in 2017. He joined Boston Ballet as an artist in 2019 and will return next season as a second soloist.
Louise Hautefeuille of Burlingame, California began her early dance training at Menlo Park Academy of Dance, studying under the Royal Academy of Dance curriculum. She attended summer programs at Master Ballet Academy, L’Ecole de Danse de l’Opéra de Paris, and Boston Ballet School. After receiving first place at San Francisco Youth American Grand Prix in 2017, she was invited to join Boston Ballet School as a trainee. Hautefeuille joined Boston Ballet as an artist in 2019 and will return next season as a second soloist.
Sage Humphries of Seal Beach, California began her dance training in Orange County, California, and she has studied with Terri and Anthony Sellars, Michael and Kristine Houston, and Dmitri Kulev there. At age 12, she attended the School of American Ballet Summer Course in New York. Humphries joined Boston Ballet II in 2016 and was promoted to artist of the Company in 2017. She will return next season as a second soloist.
Sangmin Lee of Seoul, South Korea trained at Korea National University of Arts from 2016–2019. He has received many awards including the silver medal at Arabesque Competition and gold medal at Vaganova Prix in 2016, fourth place at the Moscow Ballet Competition in 2017, the gold medal at Youth America Grand Prix in 2018, and silver medal at the USA International Ballet Competition in 2018. Lee joined Boston Ballet as an artist in 2019 and will return next season as a second soloist.
Daniel Rubin of Cupertino, California studied at the Kirov Academy of Ballet of Washington, DC, and later, under the wing of Tamara Statkoun. Rubin continued his classical ballet studies at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography (Bolshoi Ballet Academy). Upon graduation in 2015, he joined the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg. After performing their entire corps de ballet repertoire, he was promoted to soloist in 2018 and to leading soloist in 2020. Daniel Rubin joined Boston Ballet as an artist of the Company in 2022 and will return next season as a second soloist.
Sydney Williams began her early dance training in Bakersfield, California, studying ballet, jazz, and tap. She continued her ballet training at the Indianapolis School of Ballet under the direction of Victoria Lyras. From 2017 through 2019, Williams attended Colburn Dance Academy in Los Angeles, CA on full scholarship. She attended Boston Ballet School (BBS) 2019 Summer Dance Program on scholarship, and subsequently received a scholarship to Boston Ballet School’s Professional Division at Walnut Hill School for the Arts. In 2021, Williams was invited to join BBS’s Post Graduate program. Williams joined Boston Ballet II in 2022 and will return next season as an artist of the Company.
Brooke Wilson began her early ballet training in Dover, New Hampshire under the direction of former Boston Ballet dancer Edra Toth. From 2016 to 2020, she studied at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on full scholarship. Wilson trained at the School of American Ballet for four summers. She attended Miami City Ballet School’s Choreographic Intensive in 2020 before joining their pre-professional division as a year-round student. Wilson joined Boston Ballet II in 2021 and will return next season as an artist of the Company.

Birmingham Royal Ballet will say farewell to Principal dancer Brandon Lawrence at the end of the 22/23 season as takes his next step and joins Ballett Zürich for Cathy Marston’s first season as Director.
Brandon began dancing at the age of 8, earning a place at the prestigious Royal Ballet School in 2006, before joining Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2011, where his talent saw him rise through the ranks. Brandon was promoted to Soloist in 2016, First Soloist two years later, and in 2019 achieved the highest accolade of Principal.
Throughout his career with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Brandon has been recognised for his outstanding talent and has received multiple nominations for dance awards. He has also been instrumental in creating new roles with the company, showcasing his creativity and versatility.

The time has come for me to explore a new chapter beyond Birmingham Royal Ballet which will only build on everything I’ve learnt from my time dancing with the company, and learning from the highly skilled people who’ve walked through the doors. I’m forever grateful for the countless opportunities I’ve been given from new creations and LEAP work to Radio and TV. It has been an honour not just to have danced with the company, but also to have been a proud ambassador.

There have been too many favourite roles and ballets at Birmingham Royal Ballet to mention, but to name a few Romeo, Siegfried, 3rd Seminarian in Carmina Burana, Othello in The Moors Pavane and Southern Cape Zebra in Still life at the Penguin Café (which will be the final role I perform for BRB) all stick out in my memory. Most recently working with Juliano Nunez on Interlinked, Carlos on his production of Don Quixote and partnering Polina Seminova in Sir Peter Wright’s Swan Lake have also been huge highlights.’
Birmingham Royal Ballet will always be in my heart as the family who are in it together and there for each other. From August this year I will join Ballett Zürich as a Principal Dancer.’

The Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater of Ukraine is heading to the Netherlands this April for a new performance set to the world-famous Carmina Burana, the legendary score of Carl Orff.
This performance marks the anniversary of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine and sees more than 130 musicians, dancers and singers perform a new, interdisciplinary performance of Carmina Burana for the first time in the Netherlands.
With the exceptional vocal soloists, choir, dance and orchestral line-up, plus the direction, choreography and scenography of the Dutchman Gerard Mosterd, this new performance creates an intense experience for audiences.
Due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, this acclaimed company has found itself in dire straits. Odesa has been a target for the Russians since the outbreak of the full-scale war in February 2022 and it is exceptional that this ensemble is able to tour the Netherlands, despite the war.

Critically acclaimed choreographer Jasmin Vardimon MBE and artistic director of Jasmin Vardimon Company, has been a leading force in the British dance theatre scene for over two decades; renowned for groundbreaking and visually stunning dance theatre.
Jasmin Vardimon Company created the JV2 Professional Development Diploma with the mission to encourage, cultivate and nurture young talent. The programme offers a unique opportunity for participants to train as versatile and multi-disciplinary performers, under the guidance of one of the world’s leading female choreographers.
This Spring, JV2 is touring a thrilling and energetic mix of leading edge choreography and exceptional new talent selected by Vardimon. Commencing at JVH.o.m.e – the newly opened home for the Jasmin Vardimon Company in Ashford, UK – JV2 is showcasing premieres of works from longtime associates Vinicus Salles and Andre Rebelo and a reworking of a work by the acclaimed choreographer Jasmin Vardimon herself.

“I am immensely proud of this year’s JV2 dancers and of the opportunity for them to showcase their skills & talents in these works. This is a very special year for us, our first in JVh.o.m.e. Having this year’s JV2 cohort as the first to perform in this brand new building is a great way to celebrate that.”
The premiere of It’s Not Unusual by Vinicius Salles’ is an exploration of masculinity seen through the lens of the music of Tom Jones. This critical, ironic, sometimes funny, study of what’s behind the legendary singer’s lyrics, takes a wider look at how images of maleness and sexism are ingrained into much of British popular culture.
Salles’ work will be presented alongside the other world premiere – Andre Rebelo’s Mystique – a dreamlike piece that invites the audience into a mysterious world that merges fantasy and darkness. This is a world where magic, illusion, shape shifting and special gifts interlace to create a landscape inhabited by identities from many different origins and where multiple dimensions cross paths.
Joining these works at JVH.o.m.e only will be Canvas choreographed by multi-award-winning, Jasmin Vardimon MBE. Here, the audience is invited to come up close and gather around a massive canvas. Upon this movements are used as brush strokes to draw an engaging picture that explores how group dynamics evolve, give rise and sometime swallow individuals within it.
Following the Ashford performances, on 3 April the JV2 dancers will present a double bill of the works by Salles and Rebelo at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre in Canterbury.
The tour will finish in London, with the double bill playing at The Lilian Baylis Theatre at Sadlers Wells on the evenings of 5 and 6 April.
With public performances on 31 March and 1 April, there will be a special schools performance on 30 March. The 1 April performance will be followed by a Q&A.

Boston Ballet‘s Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen has announced Our Journey – a programme showcasing two insightful contemporary works that reflects the curiosity about the world and a shared desire for human connection.
La Mer, an explosive world premiere by lauded artist and choreographer Nanine Linning, explores the romance, beauty, and volatility of the sea and is the result of a highly collaborative effort of an extraordinary team of artists from around the world. La Mer is a 50-minute work performed by 33 dancers, 45 musicians of the orchestra, and eight singers. Linning and her team aim to raise awareness of the importance of ocean preservation and a new vision of the ocean.

His energetic choreography for 25 dancers shines against a nine-movement orchestral score composed by GRAMMY and Academy Award nominee Sufjan Stevens. This work is Peck’s second collaboration with Stevens. With costumes by former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Janie Taylor, sets by Brooklyn-based artist and architect Karl Jensen, and lighting by Peck’s frequent collaborator and Boston Ballet Lighting Designer Brandon Stirling Baker.

Dance is a universal language that has the power to move people emotionally, physically, and spiritually. For children, dance is especially powerful. It offers an outlet for creative expression, physical activity, and an emotional release. Dancing helps children develop skills, coordination, balance, and agility. Beyond the physical benefits, dance also helps children develop a sense of self-confidence and self-esteem, as they learn to take risks, make mistakes, and collaborate with others.
Former professional dancer, teacher and filmmaker Dan Watt has been exploring the power of dance for children with disabilities in his debut film Everybody Dance. The documentary follows 5 kids with different disabilities, their families and dance teacher for almost a year as they prepare for a dance recital.
Everybody Dance has received support from prima ballerina Misty Copeland and has been showcased on the Kelly Clarkson show in the US. Dan Watt shares his experience of making this inspiring documentary.
What inspired you to make the Everybody Dance documentary?
My initial idea was to see how the determination, dedication and commitment to studying the arts could be applied in every day life. I am a former dancer and dance teacher and I had a dream about two girls I taught maybe 16/17 yrs ago. They happen to have autism – I did not know much about autism so I just taught the class as I always did and realized that nothing had to be changed in my teaching style and method.
I did however chat with Fran, the mom, to see if there were any specifics that I was not aware of and to educate myself and she did actually tell me that one of the girls had sensory sensitivities and sensitive to touch and to not worry about physically adjusting her arms etc just continue to show her. All kids will pick up certain dance steps at their own pace so I corrected every child when needed and carried on.
A week or so later I had another dream about Fran and her two daughters and I thought, this is a higher power poking me saying “THIS is your Movie” …. So I trusted myself and stated my journey and here we are.
When making the film, what was the most surprising or unexpected moment you experienced?
Actually the moment didn’t happen while filming, it happened BECAUSE I had been filming. After about 4 months of filming I went to Target to do some shopping. As I was walking down one of the isles there was a child having a tantrum on the floor, I walked by and thought, I wonder if she’s on the spectrum and just continued shopping – I didn’t think “what a horrible child” or “why isn’t that parent doing anything”.
When I got in my car I started to cry, I realised that a switch in my brain had been flipped – my perspective had been changed and if my film could do that for others, I had accomplished my goal.
If there was one message you hope people take away from the film, what would it be?
Focus on the similarities. All these kids came together with one main goal, to dance. Everyone focused on accomplishing this – learn the steps and choreography – We all come upon obstacles in our lives that we have to work our way through – Some may experience the world in different ways and if we embrace this it actually can help us see the wonders of dancing to our own rhythm yet still dance together.
What impact do you hope the documentary has on the dance industry?
That inclusion and accessibility are crucial. As dancers we are artists, we create, push boundaries, explore and even educate. It is in our blood …Let’s use those instincts and our creativity in ways that include and embrace all. Some may experience the world in different ways and if we embrace this it actually can help us see the wonders of dancing to our own rhythm yet still dance together.
