In this episode, I share the complete Interview Kit I use with my coaching clients to help them walk into interviews with confidence, clarity, and a strategy that leaves nothing to chance.
You'll learn why successful interviews aren't won by memorizing answers. They're won by preparing the right stories, anticipating employer concerns, and communicating your value in a way that hiring managers remember long after the interview ends.
Because interview success isn't about having the perfect answer to every question.
It's about telling a compelling career story that makes hiring you feel like the obvious choice.
The question is: are you preparing to answer interview questions... or preparing to win the interview?
You'll learn:
✔ How to build a complete Interview Kit that prepares you before interview invitations even arrive

So you finally started networking and landed a few coffee chats or informational interviews, congratulations! Now you might be wondering what comes next. Because getting someone to say “yes” to a conversation is one thing. Turning that conversation into a meaningful career opportunity is something entirely different.
In this episode, I'll guide you in navigating networking calls with confidence, authenticity, and purpose. You'll learn how to move beyond surface-level conversations, build genuine professional relationships, and communicate your value without making the interaction feel transactional.
Because the most effective networking conversations aren’t about asking for a job.
They’re about creating connection, gathering insights, and helping the right people understand where you can make an impact.
The question is: are your networking calls ending with “thanks for your time”… or opening doors to future opportunities?
You’ll learn:
✔ How to prepare for networking conversations without sounding rehearsed
✔ The 5-step framework for guiding a networking call naturally
✔ How to share your experience and career goals without making the conversation about you
✔ Questions that uncover valuable industry insights and hidden opportunities
✔ How to ask for introductions, referrals, and next steps without creating pressure
✔ The follow-up strategy that keeps relationships alive long after the call ends
If networking feels awkward, forced, or like it never leads anywhere… you’re not imagining it. So many professionals send a few LinkedIn messages, hear silence back, and quietly decide that networking just “doesn’t work” for their industry, personality, or career level.
Today, we'll break down why networking often fails before it even has the chance to work, and how small shifts in your mindset, messaging, and consistency can completely change the results you see. Because networking isn’t really about asking for a job. It’s about building genuine conversations that create momentum, relationships, and long-term opportunities.
And the truth is, most people give up long before they’ve gathered enough data to know what’s actually working.
The question is: are you truly networking… or just testing the waters and hoping for immediate results?
Let’s unpack how to make networking feel more natural, more relational, and far more effective in your job search.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why networking feels uncomfortable and how that hesitation affects your results
✔ The difference between transactional networking and relationship-building
✔ Why most professionals quit networking before they’ve put in enough reps
✔ How to send networking messages that actually spark conversations
✔ Practical LinkedIn networking strategies to create more opportunities naturally
If your job search has turned into endless applications, second-guessing, and hoping something finally sticks… you’re not alone. Many professionals fall into the trap of doing more: more applying, more searching, more scrolling - without ever stepping back to ask if their approach is actually working.
But in this episode, you’ll hear how Kelly went from a scattered, “apply to everything” approach to landing a director-level role with a significant salary increase. And the shift wasn’t about connections or luck. It was about clarity, positioning, and learning how to communicate her value in a way that actually landed.
Because the truth is, your experience is probably stronger than you think.
The question is: are you leveraging it?
Let’s break down what that actually looks like, and how you can start creating traction in your own search.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why applying to everything keeps you stuck (even if it feels productive)
✔ What it really means to communicate your value in interviews and beyond
✔ Why confidence comes from preparation and not memorization
If your job search, career strategy, or even job interview preparation has started to feel like one long cycle of “try harder,” you’re not alone. Many professionals push through their career goals with more effort, more applications, and more pressure - hoping momentum will eventually appear. But when progress stalls, the real shift isn’t usually effort. It’s perspective.
So take a pause and think: what if you stepped back and looked at your career the way a CEO looks at a company? Not reacting to every bump in the job search, but zooming out to assess the strategy, the direction, and the decisions that will shape the next five or ten years.
Because the truth is, you’re not just a job seeker.
You’re the CEO of a company of one.
And the way you invest in your career growth - your skills, your direction, and your strategic decisions - determines far more than the next offer. Let's get clear on that mindset in this episode and start paving the way for your growth today.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why “trying harder” often keeps your job search stuck
✔ How to think about your career like a CEO leading a company
✔ The role of strategy in long-term career growth
✔ Why high-leverage decisions matter more than constant activity
✔ How investing in yourself changes more than just your next offer
If your job search or job interview conversations are going well but offers, promotions, or recognition still feel just out of reach... Then there’s a good chance the issue isn’t your experience. It’s your ability to prove your career value in a clear, measurable way. In today’s market, strong communication alone isn’t enough. Without documented results, even great work can get overlooked, costing you real momentum in your career growth.
In this conversation with Orlando Hayes, we'll help you shift your focus to something most professionals overlook until it’s too late: capturing and communicating your impact before you need it. Because when the moment comes – whether it’s an interview, performance review, or unexpected transition – you don’t get time to scramble.
And when proof isn’t there, opportunity quietly slips away.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why great work alone isn’t enough in today’s job market
✔ What happens when you can’t prove your value in real time
✔ How documenting your wins changes your job search outcomes
✔ The difference between “doing the work” and communicating impact
✔ How performance language strengthens interviews, reviews, and promotions

Have you ever walked out of a job interview knowing you did well… and still didn’t get the offer?
The rapport was there. The recruiter said you were the favorite. The conversations felt strong - you believed it would be you. And yet, when it came down to the final decision, it was always someone else.
When that keeps happening, it’s rarely about intelligence or experience. It’s usually something more subtle — a missing through-line. A disconnect between the words you’re using, the confidence you’re carrying, and the strategy guiding it all.
You can have great conversations and still lack cohesion. You can feel confident and still miss alignment. You can say the right things — but not in a way that builds momentum toward the offer.
When your verbiage, confidence, and strategy finally lock into place, everything tightens. Find out how in this episode, so tune in.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why “almost getting the offer” points to a deeper alignment issue
✔ What a verbiage bottleneck actually looks like
✔ The difference between hype-confidence and anchored confidence
✔ How strategy turns good conversations into real opportunities
✔ Why these three elements must work together
If your job search feels like motion without momentum, you’re not alone.
You’re applying, tweaking, thinking, second-guessing. And somehow… you’re still in the same place.
Most high-achieving women aren’t stuck because they’re lazy or unqualified. They’re stuck because their minds are moving so fast that clarity never has a chance to land. So the hamster wheel spins and the doubts get louder. The “maybe I should change industries” thoughts creep in.
But traction doesn’t come from doing more.
It comes from one decision.
And sometimes, that decision is realizing you’re exactly where you need to be. Other times, it’s recognizing that white-knuckling the process isn’t leadership — it’s exhaustion.
In this conversation, you’ll slow the spin just long enough to see what’s actually happening… and what your real next move should be.
You’ll learn:
✔ How to identify the true bottleneck in your search
✔ Why “trying everything” often isn’t the same as trying strategically
✔ The hidden cost of staying stuck longer than necessary
✔ How to tell if you’re on the right track — or just busy
✔ The one decision that shifts you from spinning to traction
What if the reason interviews haven’t been landing… isn’t because you’re underprepared — but because you’re answering at the wrong depth?
You can walk out of an interview feeling confident. You can hit every STAR checkpoint, clearly explain the situation, the task, the action, and the result… and still leave the hiring leader unsure.
Not because you did anything wrong. But because something essential never surfaced.
When your responses focus only on what happened, the hiring leader is left filling in the blanks. Was the success situational? Was the timing lucky? Could it be replicated here? Under pressure? In a different environment?
And when they’re forced to guess, hesitation creeps in.
The candidates who get the offer — especially the first interview, significant salary bump kind of offer — make one thing unmistakably clear: the outcome wasn’t accidental. It was the product of how they think. I'll walk you through those exact steps in this episode, so tune in!
You’ll learn:
✔ Why STAR on its own leaves too much to interpretation
✔ The three mental “bridges” hiring leaders try to build
✔ How to sell your thinking — not just your past actions
✔ Three ways to elevate your stories beyond surface detail
✔ Why replicable process beats one-off achievement every time
If your interview prep has mostly meant practicing answers over and over, there’s a good chance something bigger has been missing. Strong interviews are built from the ground up – starting with audience awareness, risk mitigation, and strategic storytelling long before rehearsal ever begins.
There’s a moment many professionals experience when they realize they’ve been answering questions… but not intentionally guiding decisions. Do you recognize yourself following the same pattern?
You’ll learn:
✔ Why practice without strategy reinforces the wrong habits
✔ The five layers that build a compelling interview message
✔ How to identify the hiring leader’s risks and obstacles
✔ Why relevance always outweighs raw impact
✔ What it means to internalize a message instead of rehearsing lines
Did you know that you can spend hours preparing for interviews and still unknowingly reinforce the wrong habits? Effort doesn’t always equal progress. Sometimes it builds confidence. Other times, it quietly strengthens the very pattern that’s holding you back.
High achievers especially fall into this trap. Strong communicators assume that more practice will automatically lead to better performance. But repetition without refinement can lock in ineffective habits. What feels polished might not actually be strategic. What feels confident might not be landing the way you think.
The difference between “good communicator” and “compelling candidate” isn’t volume of preparation – it’s intentional refinement. Tune in, and I'll tell you exactly how and why.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why practice alone doesn’t improve interview performance
✔ The difference between repetition and deliberate refinement
✔ How high achievers unknowingly reinforce ineffective patterns
✔ What real feedback loops look like in interview prep
✔ The one question to ask to see if your preparation is helping or hurting
Few things are more confusing than seeing a recruiter or hiring leader view your LinkedIn profile… and then hearing absolutely nothing. That spike of excitement followed by silence can leave you wondering what went wrong.
The truth is, LinkedIn isn’t just about what you want to say – it’s about how quickly someone scanning your profile can decide to stay, scroll, or move on. Every section creates micro-decisions. From your headline to your About section to your activity, small signals shape whether someone feels confident enough to take the next step.
When your profile is built from your perspective instead of theirs, interest quietly drops off. But when it’s built from their lens momentum builds, and in this episode, I'll tell you exactly how.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why profile views don’t automatically lead to outreach
✔ The three goals your LinkedIn profile should be built around
✔ Where recruiters make silent “micro-decisions” as they scroll
✔ How perspective shifts change everything about your messaging
✔ The exact points where interest is most often lost
Momentum in a job search can feel strong one week and completely gone the next. One rejection, one quiet stretch, or one unanswered message can suddenly turn confidence into doubt. Let's explore why the mind jumps so quickly from a single experience to sweeping conclusions—and how that mental shortcut quietly derails your otherwise solid searches.
What feels like “proof” that something isn’t working is often just one data point given too much power. When that happens, decisions start getting reactive, confidence collapses, and the process begins to feel hopeless far faster than it should. Once you learn how to spot this trap early, it'll be much easier to stay steady, focused, and forward-moving—even when results haven’t shown up yet.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why one bad week can override months of preparation
✔ How the brain turns single data points into false certainty
✔ What hopelessness actually signals in the job search
✔ How to prevent emotional whiplash from derailing momentum
✔ Why early discouragement often has nothing to do with final outcomes
High-stakes interviews can quietly shift from a conversation into a performance. When that happens, answers start to feel one-sided, rehearsed, or strangely disconnected – like words are coming out, but real connection isn’t landing. This topic explores why that shift happens and how pressure, self-protection, and over-control interfere with presence in the moment.
Staying present isn’t about saying the perfect thing or proving worth. It’s about creating enough internal calm to truly listen, adjust, and respond in real time. When presence replaces performance, interviews become conversations again—and that’s when clarity, confidence, and connection show up naturally.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why interviews can start to feel like monologues instead of conversations
✔ How self-protection quietly blocks real connection
✔ The link between anxiety, control, and communication breakdowns
✔ What presence actually looks like in a high-pressure interview
✔ How staying regulated helps your message land and resonate
Ever get an interview for a role you don't actually want? In this conversation, we'll explore why attention so often drifts toward what’s available instead of what’s intentional – and how that pattern quietly pulls professionals away from their best-fit roles. What looks like momentum on the surface can sometimes be a form of relief, distraction, or energy conservation rather than true progress.
This is a field-notes look at what happens psychologically when fear, urgency, and “better than nothing” thinking creep into the job search. Once those patterns become visible, it becomes much easier for you to step out of reaction mode and make decisions that actually support long-term satisfaction and alignment.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why “available” roles can feel more compelling than ideal ones
✔ The hidden psychology behind applying to jobs you don’t really want
✔ How short-term relief can masquerade as productivity
✔ Why attention naturally drifts away from intentional career goals
✔ How to reclaim focus and stop settling before you’ve truly explored your options
If you walk into interviews prepared but still find yourself rambling, freezing, or circling the same point, this episode explains what’s really going on. Today, we'll break down why this happens most often to capable, experienced professionals—and why it’s not a confidence flaw or a communication problem.
We'll explore the gap between preparation and pressure, and how belief in your preparation gets tested in real-time. When your mind and body don’t fully trust that your preparation will hold up, clarity slips. Once you understand that dynamic, it becomes much easier to communicate naturally, concisely, and with confidence.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why rambling and blanking out come from the same root cause
✔ What pressure reveals about your interview preparation
✔ How belief in your answers is built—not forced
✔ Why mock interviews work when they’re designed correctly
✔ What actually helps your communication click under pressure
If you know you’re capable but suddenly feel less confident in the job search, this episode explains why that disconnect happens - and why it’s not a personal failure. Things have changed, with more factors (AI tools, psychometrics, etc.) helping to make decisions along the way.
The goal today is to understand how your story is interpreted and to show up calmer, clearer, and more compelling, without trying to be someone you’re not.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why feeling capable but unsure can be a signal and not a weakness
✔ How the assumption trap can impact your resume
✔ What helps recruiters during screening calls
✔ How psychometrics can influence hiring decisions behind the scenes
✔ Three ways to set yourself apart in an AI-forward hiring process

Today’s conversation explores why strong qualifications and polished answers aren’t always enough—and how elevating your career stories from tactical to strategic changes how employers see your potential. We'll break down how to move beyond listing actions and results and instead communicate how you think, plan, and lead.
Using a clear, practical framework, this episode shows how strategic storytelling helps hiring leaders trust not just what you’ve done, but what you’ll do next. When employers understand your thinking, your interviews stop blending in and start influencing decisions.
You’ll learn:
✔ Why traditional STAR stories often fail to create differentiation
✔ How to reveal your strategic thinking—not just your past actions
✔ Four shifts that instantly elevate your interview responses
✔ How to show future potential, not just past performance
✔ What makes employers trust your outcomes aren’t a one-time fluke

In this episode, I’m walking you through three opportunities hiding inside today’s competitive job market. I'll share:
✔︎ Why the job market isn’t the reason you’re stuck

Quiet quitting is/was a popular term coming out of the pandemic. Burnout was a real thing, but no one seemed to acknowledge it. Professionals were stressed, overworked, and underpaid.
What's worse, the trend has always been to add more work to professionals who are sometimes absorbing the work of one or more other positions already, and to expect unrealistic, unhealthy work habits...all for tiny to non-existent raises.

Brian comes to us with a wealth of knowledge:
With 15+ years working in the Fortune 500 and start-up world, Brian has been fortunate enough to gain a tremendous amount of experience in business and people operations. One of his many life-changing experiences was working next to a founder CEO and leading the business from a handful of employees to over 150+ employees and $100MM in revenues. After 5 years of rapid growth, the company failed due to the CEO’s lack of leadership, reckless actions, and disregard for the employees that helped build the company. It is at this reflection point that Brian knew the world of work needed to evolve.
Leveraging his corporate and start-up experience, Brian launched Scaleocity Works to help businesses transform their cultures into the Best Place to Work environment. Brian and the team at Scaleocity works provide HR advisory services, and a full suite of HR solutions, including payroll and innovative HR technologies that improve the employee experience.
Most recently, Brian has launched the Entrepreneur to Employer community for entrepreneurs getting ready to hire employee # 1 and beyond. The membership community is a resource for HR coaching, education, and access to a library of People Operations tools, templates, and workbooks. The Entrepreneur to Employer community has one mission - to help employers Make Mondays Matter!
Last but not least, in an effort to help employers Make Mondays Matter and change the world of work, Brian is also the host of the Entrepreneur to Employer podcast. Each week, Brian publishes an information-packed episode to give employers actionable insights to help them level up their HR operations and business.

“I can’t believe I have to start over…”
“I’ve invested too much in this industry to leave now”
“I don’t want to start at the bottom again”
Guess what?! You don’t have to!
Changing careers can sometimes mean a small dip but rarely does it mean a blank slate. In fact, many times a career change is what makes you exactly the candidate a company is looking for.
You are like a key they need - the one unique key that can open their lock.
Listen in for three strengths you can leverage when you change careers:
A skill set no one in the candidate pool has
Leverage your career difference by searching for the gap you can fill in your next season. Are you a teacher hoping to hop into tech? Focus on online education or educational software companies, for example. Are you an engineer switching to social services? Seek out virtual and tech oriented social services companies where you are sure to be an asset and blessing.
A fresh perspective
We’ve all stared at the same widget for so long, it could be backwards and inside down… and we wouldn’t even notice. Use your resume summary and/or cover letter, networking conversations and interview as opportunities to showcase your fresh perspective. Get curious about the product or service you hope to work with and use your newbie perspective to open the committee’s eyes to a gap, hidden opportunity, or a fix they just hadn’t seen.
Companies like to do things their way
Years ago, I answered an easy industry question with the wrong answer. And I was hired. I knew my mistake after looking it up post-interview, so I was dumbfounded. Their response? “We liked that you were so green. We need someone we can groom into our way of business.” WOW. How do you leverage this?
But...remember this is just a starting point - don’t take yourself out of the running, even if you don’t see one of these hints.
You don’t need to start over. You just need to find the lock your key opens.
THE UNCOMMON CAREER ACADEMY IS OPENING

Struggling to find your next career move? Praying about it but don’t see the answer beaming down from heaven (Would’t that be amazing)? That’s ok! God’s guidance comes in many ways, and often, it’s in the action we take that we see His hand.
Here are the 3 simple and practical steps you can focus on this week to gain clarity on your career direction - more detail is in this week’s podcast episode!
Reflect on your past experience
(start with work, but include personal experience too). What positions did you enjoy most? Least? What exactly did you like/dislike about them? What like/dislike patterns do you see across your positions? In light of this…what do you think God might be preparing you for? There is no right/wrong answer here, just consider the possibilities.
Identify your needs and wants
What are your needs for the salary, location, time commitment, etc.? Needs are “make or break” requirements, so be careful not to mix wants and needs. Once you have your needs list completed, start looking at wants. This is now your wishlist. It can be as big or small as you’d like and can encompass really anything. Your wants list is negotiable, your needs list is not.
Then, build on your natural interests
Look at both big picture interests (faith, technology, art, etc) but pay even closer attention to task and project oriented interests (talking with people, solving short term problems, decorating a room, etc.) Look at your past experience from #1 above (what you liked/disliked) to identify interests but go beyond this list. Ask yourself:
We are all habitual creatures, and even when we can’t see patterns in our behaviors, the patterns are there. Discover some of your natural career patterns with the three items above.
During this process, ask The Lord to bring you clarity & peace, and to guide your path as you engage in these practical activities.
He cares about even the smallest parts of your life…and your career, where you spend most of your life, is one of the most important ways that God uses you.
Your work is also where you can experience great joy and accomplishment AND be wildly successful (and well-paid) for it. Listen in to start your journey to getting paid to do work you enjoy, succeed in, and were literally created for!

Today we're talking with Cindy Stamatis. She has an absolutely amazing life and career story! Today she'll tell us:
How she went from a retail position working 4AM to 10AM shifts and, without a degree, made her way to a Western Regional Sales Manager at a huge (and very successful) toy company
About her journey into entrepreneurship and how, from the very beginning through to the brink of closing her business with $30,000 in debt...God was so clearly with her and her husband in at every miraculous moment.
How she felt unqualified in situations that only The Lord could appoint her to (and how He showed up every time), and
About career wisdom and insights she's learned over the years, and how you can experience the hand of God in your life as well.
Listen in to hear how God comes in with miracles at the eleventh hour, when there is no other explanation than God and only God. Just like in the wilderness, God repeats his love story in Cindy’s life as he has, does, and will in yours too.

Did you know your past experience impacts your response to future opportunities? Today, I'll cover key insights from Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk's best-selling book, The Body Keeps the Score. Learn how "the greatest source of our suffering are the lies we tell ourselves" (quote from Dr. Van Der Kolk's book), how these life challenges affect us well into our adulthood, how they can keep you from your calling and purpose, and of course, small actionable steps you can take to overcome the impact and move in freedom & into your calling.
