Today's guest has sales experience. Actually, I've just learned that he has sales experience and marketing experience, baby, going back 30 years rather than 20 years that I know about. Because before I know about he worked at Marketing Week for ten years. But what I found is sales experience going back to 2000 when he was an area manager selling advertising on a personal finance website. Since then, he has held roles, including senior sales, commercial director, global sales manager, and director of Sales and Marketing.

He has been involved in industries including advertising, publishing, business, intelligence and innovative display services. He has been running his business. Everyone works in sales for almost five years. He is a LinkedIn top voice for sales, a sales force influencer and the author of two books, Everybody Works in Sales and the Easy Guide to Sales for Business Owners. In fact, that needs to be revised as well. We will hear about that. What you may not know about him is that he married a woman he had known for 20 minutes and one game show for years to provide for his family, including dirty money and the biggest game show in town.

Today's guest is Niraj Kapur.

Interestingly, between 1990 and 1995. He wanted to be as good a drummer as Ricky Rocket, and as good a guitarist as Joe Satriani. Imagine if he had only focused what might have happened.

Scott Bywater has been MD of his copywriting business Copywriting That Sells since 2002. He has the distinction of being recommended by two previous guests, James Yuile and Scott Baker.

Scott Baker describes him as "one to watch, the best copywriter in Australia. He writes copy for the biggest names in the game and is one of the most incredible human beings. He has a skill set in copywriting that cannot be rated highly enough." Scott is the unseen wordsmith behind dozens of six and seven figure email launches.

Martin Henley: Okay, so question number one, how are you qualified? So I think firstly, you need to kind of let us know which reviews we're talking about, and then how you're qualified to talk to us about that.

Scott Baker: That's a really good segmentation. And because there are so many different areas for reviews, and often people think our Google reviews are the same as product reviews. But like, I will be talking specifically about reviews and testimonials. So Google reviews as opposed to product reviews. Facebook Ads and Google AdWords I don't know much much about that.

Martin: How are you, James, qualified to talk to us about PPC?

James: Well, I think really you needs to look back at the thirty odd years prior to me doing PPC, because I learned cold calling, and direct marketing and runing advertising, full page magazine advertising, and practiced those skills are all those years prior to discovering the internet. I built my first website in 1998 and optimised it for Alta Vista, and grew a business from that. So I was already on the internet building websites commercially. At that time, there was a tool available to us from a company called Overtures which was a keyword research tool, so we used that keyword research tool to find keywords for SEO for websites.

Now, cutting a very, very long story short, not implicating any commercial improprieties along the way, because they certainly were a few. But Google launched a programme which was then called AdWords in Australia, in, I think, late 2001, somewhere around there, and I'd heard about it, and I had a little look at a bit of a look at it. I went to an internet marketing seminar that was held up on the Sunshine Coast about an hour and a half's drive north from where I live and one of the guest speakers that seminar was Perry Marshall, who, at that time was already laying claim to being an an AdWords guru. I listened with, literally, with bated breath, and hung on every word he said.

I realised that at last after all those years of of waiting that we finally had a tool available to us that gave us absolute empirical data. So we could see at a glance, how many people searched for a certain keyword, for a certain business, we could see very definitely which adverts worked in terms of the relative number of clicks they got compared with other adverts, and we could also track the actions that people took in terms of making contact with businesses once their click led to the website because we could track the number of people who made cell phone calls or the number of people that filled out inquiry forms on your website. So we had real numbers, I mean, real numbers. So you can absolutely say to somebody, I'll give you a case study about this, if you want, you can actually say to somebody, this is where your best market approach is, these are the keywords, these are the headlines, and you can take this stuff into the offline world, and use it in practice, and make quick and easy sales.

Martin Henley: Your business is called The Brand Bucket. I know that there is a process that you've put together and I know that you're a huge believer in brand. Maybe, for the sake of people who haven't seen the first one of these, maybe you can give us a sense of what your definition of brand is and what your approach to brand is?

Barnaby Wynter: Yeah, great. I think it's great, exactly the right place to start Martin to be fair. In 1999, I became the youngest MD of top 200 Agency, as you said in the introduction, and that was an agency that had at its heart, The Brand Bucket as a methodology. My first board meeting I walked in, I said, Okay, guys, I kind of understand what a bucket is, it's pretty self evident what a bucket is, what's, what's a brand. That day, we had over 148 person years of experiences around the board table, creating very famous brands, from SO, to AA, to Carlsberg to, you know, FedEx all those sorts of brands had gone through The Brand Bucket process.

Barnaby Wynter: We spent about 15 minutes filling six sheets of a1 flip chart paper with what we thought brand was. This is a question I've asked many 1000s of Marketing Directors ever since and one of the one of the big first things we need to get clear, is the difference between brand and branding. A lot of agencies muddle up the word branding, or they mix branding and brand simultaneously, all of the time. The concern that you would have is that it means they fundamentally don't understand what a brand is, because branding emanates from where it comes from, you know, using a branding iron to brand a cow so you knew it belonged to somebody, even though it was running wild in the wilderness.

This is the Effective Marketing channel. This is episode I think we're up to number 24 of my talk marketing series. If you have been looking at this channel at all, you will know that I am on a mission to help you to be more successful, I want you to be more successful. And on top of that, what I want to do is pull in anyone I can find who also might have something that will help you to be more successful. And I have another victim for us this week. It's been a while since we've recorded one of these, but we are recording one of these this week and I'm on a mission to have a series. We're officially into, we are into season three of talk marketing with number 23. And today the topic is PR and I have managed to coerce somebody who has been in PR for 25 years, has been running her own PR business for 17 years, is described by one of her recommendations on LinkedIn as a force of nature. And you might want to believe that she is a force of nature because she is also a AWPC world powerlifting champion. This is all true. She also has a weird penchant for big rabbits, which we might find out about today. My guest today from Aneela Rose PR is Aneela Rose.

Martin Henley: Excellent, cool. All right. So let's start at the beginning. I'm interested to know how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing?

Warren Cass: Now, I don't mean to be the rebel. Okay. But how is anybody qualified to talk about marketing, marketing is everything. You know, if you're a human being having a human experience, and you've got an opinion on marketing, probably, whether you're at the receiving end, or whether you're a business owner, who's, you know, had to get out there and manage the perception of their brand, find ways of engaging with an audience. So yeah, I could trot out that I wrote a book on Influence, which was a best seller, I could trot out that I've been running my own businesses for 30 years and all of that, but I think that type of question is a broader question, which is, you know, if you've been a consumer, or if you've run a business, you've had to take that brand to market, then you're qualified, at least to have the conversation, whether you're qualified to receive people's money in order to manage strategy, and all of those kinds of things that’s a different question, but we're all qualified to talk about marketing, because we've all experienced it at one end, and have you know, if you've run your own business, then you've had to at least give it consideration or the other. Because my personal belief is everything is marketing.

In addressing the question and delivering the huge value of pricing strategy to you, there are five things that we will be covering. We will of course be answering the question, what is pricing strategy? We'll be answering the question who should be involved with pricing strategy, or concerned with pricing strategy? How do customers feel about pricing? How do you do pricing strategy? And when do you do pricing strategy?

Martin Henley: So where we start is, how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing?

Robbie Mould: Well, so I've run two businesses now, this is my second venture, RJM Digital, which is a marketing company, a web design and SEO company. But running a company, you are in charge of marketing, you decide where your brand goes, you have to decide who your customer is, how you're going to market to those customers, drive sales, etc. So I think actually doing it, and working with marketing agencies, and also then being a marketing agency to work with a lot of customers, I'd like to think I'm in a pretty good state, whether I do it right or wrong is a different matter, and probably something for someone else. But yeah, that's kind of how I've ended up here.

But my background isn't really traditional marketing. So my background is a web developer at university. I've been in corporate sales for small startups, large corporates, etc. Run my business, before in the IT sector, but always kept up with the software development side of things, building websites, building online presence, building platforms, etc. And so now, as the sort of market evolved, where you'd have to say, arguably, the majority of marketing, the majority of sales, especially in this post-COVID world, blah, blah, blah, is that it's all gone digital, and where I sit with that background of, in my sales and building platforms, building websites, etc, I like to think puts me in a pretty good state to help other companies, small business owners drive their marketing efforts.

So yeah, I've met a lot of people and I've got a deep love of humans around the world, and an amazing connection, community and friendship and I still try and do, even now a 100 Zoom calls every month, so it gets through my 1000 a year, albeit, I missed the physical, I missed the flights, I miss the airports, the hotels, the formal shaking hands, the drinks, the beers, the conferences, the events. But I still, get through 1000 zooms every year so I can keep in touch with at least 1000 of that 33,000.

Martin Henley

Wow. And that's impressive. Okay so to bring a little bit of order to this. There are only four questions in this to typically keep us busy for like an hour and 15 minutes. The four questions are firstly, how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing. What is it that you do, how do you add value in the world. How do you feel about marketing, and then what is your recommendation for people in the current climate, you know, how should people be conducting themselves in a sales marketing kind of fashion right now, so I feel like all of this, how are you qualified is, you know, you build a network of 600 odd 1000 people this Ecademy thing so I feel like it's all gonna happen in the context of that and you are redoing it, but the thing I really liked about you is your commitment to actually engage, you built this huge online community where you clearly have like a really personal commitment to engaging with people face to face, or at least on video now. So, in that context, of course, the question is how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing?

Thomas Power

So that's question one, is it? Martin Henley That's question one, yes.Thomas PowerOkay, well first of all I am professionally trained in the subject and in 1986 I got a diploma in marketing from the Institute of marketing in Cookham near Maidenhead so I am actually officially qualified professionally.

Martin Henley: Can tell us all how you are qualified to talk to us about marketing.

Barnaby Wynter: Okay, so it's always easy to talk about yourself. So I started with a psychology degree at Dundee University. With the sole intention of becoming an educational psychologist realized halfway through I wasn't going to become one of those. Because it wasn't my style. I settled on advertising as a career. So left University missed the deadline for for applying for a postgraduate course. So when rode around Australia on a motorcycle for a year came back and did a postgraduate diploma in advertising and also wanting marketing at the same time from that shot straight into the advertising industry worked for nothing for an agency called Lonsdale important square on primarily the abbey national accounts. And after that three month period came to an end or joined a small agency and firing into launch thinkable, the fit to carto the fear theory No, I worked on Saab, Scania trucks, RJ haul car leasing and Weber carburetors, took on my first mentor, after about eight months in industry and sat down with him and said, you know, what do I do?

Barnaby Wynter:: And he said, Well, you've got if you are going to pursue a career in advertising, automotive is a great place to be it's the second largest purchase anybody ever makes. You'll always have a career in that. And I said, that sounds really interesting. He said, You got a CV to die for for that going forward. And I said, Oh, that's that's really cool. I said, What are other alternatives are then he said, Well, the other thing you can do is you can become what's called a specialist generalist. Now is another as you work across lots of different clients. Learn how business works, and then maybe later on in your career, you can be more advisory on a business sensors and all of that sounds really good as well. I said, which, which one should I do? And he said, am I right in saying that you write a Vespa scooter and you've got a beetle cabriolet and I said, Yes. And I have both still today. And he said, You're not a Motorhead. So do not go down the automotive route, because you won't like Formula One racing and talking about Lamborghinis and Ferraris and whatever for the rest of your life.

This is a really cool conversation with the brilliant Robert Craven.

Martin: Yes, I think it is, and I need to remember, and you need to remind me occasionally, because what I do most recently is I teach digital marketing, and I teach it in a very conspiratorial way. So I teach my students, the first thing I tell them is I can't teach them digital marketing. But what I can do is, like when you teach somebody to surf, you can teach them to be safe in the water. So I teach them very much it's us versus the corporations. I have to be reminded because I was working 20 years ago, 30 years ago that before the internet, things were far harder than they are now. So I need to remember that from time to time.

Robert: Well, I'm actually going to dispute that, I didn't think they were harder. So there you go, it’s just a bit of upside-down thinking, because it's so easy to do it now, you know, because anyone can throw up a website with Wix, because anyone can come up with a unique selling proposition, because anyone can find some product, you know, everyone can be at it. Whereas, you know, 15 years ago, you had to work really hard you had, to have five or 10,000 pounds to have a website, absolute minimum. I remember, selling websites to lawyers for 40,000 - 50,000 pounds, and they weren't, certainly weren’t, very sophisticated by today's standard. So, you know, now, if you want to find out who's the head honcho of your target company, just go into LinkedIn, press a few buttons, see who you know knows them and boom, you've actually got the connection whereas then it was like, you know, how do I even know who's the head honcho? I know, I’ll phone them, and you get through to the reception, and they say, so who is the person in charge of marketing that I should be talking to, the phone goes down. So supply and demand tells me that there's five times more people doing business, and it's five times easier for them to actually make names, which means that there's just so much noise, I mean, just look at your LinkedIn or your Facebook feeds and how much blinking noise there is. That noise wasn't there before, you know, I think it might have been in some sense a better time.

Martin: Okay good. Right. So how are you Steve Bustin qualified to talk to us about public speaking?

Steve: Because I'm either on stage myself, or I'm teaching other people how to do it, would be the glib answer. Or the last 18 months, I'm either on screen myself, or teaching other people how to do it. So I work as a professional speaker, and event compere, and public speaking coach. So I'm on stage a lot, either speaking, delivering keynotes, workshops, those sorts of things, or as a compere emcee, to hosting events. So a lot of people see me on stage, and then they're like, "Uhm, you're good at that. Can you teach me how to do it?" So that's really how my business grew. When I started to speak at events, and people would start saying, "Oh could you come speak at my event? And actually, could you teach my team how to speak like that? And could you give me some coaching?" I suppose the other creds, I mean, I'm a journalist by background, I'm ex-BBC. So I'm used to, you know, I've always been a communicator. And right back at school, I was one of those kids who always wanted to stand up in assembly and to say things and talk about things, I've never been shy in talking. So it was, you know, it's sort of the natural career, I suppose I've always been waiting for in a way, I did stand up for a few years, and gigs around things, which was actually really useful training in terms of being able to play any audience and read an audience and different sizes of rooms and those sorts of things. And I suppose then, you know, as I've progressed through, I've actually just finished an 18 month term as National President of the Professional Speaking Association, which is the trade body for professional speaking here in the UK. And I'm board member of the Global Speakers Federation. And I'm also the author of a book The Authority Guide to Presenting and Public Speaking. So yeah, that's out there in a while. It's on, available in on Amazon and Audible, which was interesting, actually, and interestingly I sell far more copies on Audible than I do on Amazon. So the audio book, which I recorded, sells much better. So anybody who's happen to have a book their name, if you haven't already done it, make sure you've got an audio book out there because that's where the demand is right now, particularly for business books.

Martin: Okay, great. That's really good news. Excellent. Okay, cool. So we are here today to talk about marketing. And so I only have like four or five questions, the four or five questions as you know are, how you're qualified to talk to us about marketing? What it is that you do? Who it is that you do it for? How you do it, how you deliver success for your customers? How you feel about marketing, and what your recommendations are for people in the current situation. So maybe we should get started at the beginning and you can tell us all how you are qualified to talk to us about marketing.

Melanie: I got into marketing via sales and I discovered that sales and marketing, it should be no revelation to anyone that they should be far more connected than they are. I started my own company, I did the sales, I did the marketing and I had previously worked with organisations as the sales person. It used to frustrate me in sales, that the marketing folk would send out these messages that the sales folk had to translate to the customer, and they weren't always on message so there was a disconnect. I guess from there, you know, continuing to work in sales, I really started to want to have that influence in marketing. I then did a master's degree in marketing. To my mind, there was two types of marketing, there was marketing for big organisations who have already got strong brands, and really what they're doing is protecting their brand, and looking normal and all that. And then there is marketing for innovation. So if you're a startup or you're a disruptive brand, you have a very different set of challenges because nobody knows who you are. There's no trust you have a completely different set of issues. My interest was not in how do you market Coca Cola or Nike, whatever. It was much more What if you were developing a set of sports shoes and no one has heard of you? What do you have to do? And so through that I did a bit of research and really the findings from that is what makes, I suppose I might give me some credentials around marketing. It is really getting endorsed by the right endorser, win awards, if you can. It doesn't really matter what category that is in; it could be best, fastest growing, nice place to work, environmental policy, just win something and look normal.

Martin: So the first question I ask everyone is, how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing? I know that you are enormously qualified to talk to us about marketing.

Jo: That's a kind of interesting question because I have absolutely no qualifications in the traditional sense for marketing, I came from, just an ordinary background but I think what really gives us some credibility is the fact that I have been doing this for 35 years, and we're still going, we still have a business, we are still talking to clients. We've had a number of clients for, you know, in this business for about 12 to 14 years, some come and ago and that's absolutely fine. We also have some that have been with us a long time. I would say their businesses are better because of the contribution we've made. I'm not saying we are the sole reason they're better, but we are certainly part of the team that creates better businesses. I think it's mainly about experience, it's also about - I absolutely love communication, the nuance of communication, I love the fact that, the thing that fascinates me the most, for example is translation. When you translate something, if you just translate your words, that doesn't actually mean anything, but if you translate the meaning and the nuance, it starts becoming something quite beautiful. If you take something like translating poetry, that'd be an example of what I mean by that. So I was lucky enough to find a job, my first job was, someone needed some help picking up some phones in a publishing company in central London. I went aloing for a few weeks because I had just finished my levels and asked, I don't know what I'm gonna do, I don't want to go to university, I didn't know what I wanted to do. So I literally sat in this office and I just fell in love with the whole media thing. That sounds kind of ridiculous but I was literally that kid that went, this is where I want to be. I love the whole thing of putting stuff together that communicates with people. My marketing comes not from the desire to flog people something or sell people something they don't want, but actually about building communications between people. Talking to audiences, talking to your employees, talking to your staff, your members, whoever it is, I just love the way that communication works. That's what I find really fascinating about it and that's why I think I bring to all my clients.

Martin: Good afternoon, Mr. Abela.

Nicolai: Good afternoon Mr. Martin.

Martin: How are you, man? You're looking well.

Nicolai: Yeah, not bad, not bad. Can't complain summer on the way hey.

Martin: Summer is on the way. It should be nearly there now it's June is it? You're in Malta, you're right there on the Mediterranean ocean. I understand you got some ocean this morning, did you?

Nicolai: Yes, actually, it's a sea, so it doesn't live up to your ocean expectations.

Martin: Okay, it's still very, very beautiful and blue. Good. Good. So we're here today to talk about marketing. Thank you so much for agreeing to spend this time with me, with us, with whoever ends up watching this. You've made me feel terrible, I feel like I've had to bully you into doing this.

Nicolai: But yeah, that's fine. But anyway, fine.

Martin: Okay, good. So you understand a little bit of the format. The idea is that you tell us how you're qualified to talk to us about marketing. What it is that you do, how you offer value for your customers; how you feel about marketing; and then what are your recommendations for people in the current situation, ie the global pandemic situation and the economic situation and then you are free to go and enjoy the ocean some more, if that's what you'd like to do.

Nicolai: Most, most, most kind of you, thank you.

Martin: That's okay. So tell us how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing?

Nicolai: Well, I've been meddling in marketing for around 10 years primarily with, starting off, with my own business. I had my own website, which I launched in 2000. Then, I launched my, my ex wife's yoga business, which involved using various platforms. I mean, using email marketing, social media, Facebook had just being kind of launched, Seo was starting to become a bit more structured. When I saw that, I mean things were picking up it was just a case of investing in a number of courses in digital marketing in, SEO in

Nicolai: Like some graphic type stuff you do as well

Nicolai: Adobe courses, you know, you know, bits and pieces of putting all together. So nothing really structured, but basically seeing how the markets developing and adjusting to the market.

Martin: Okay, of course, which is what good marketers do. Excellent. So you and I know each other because you attended the Digital Marketing Institute course. When was that, was that 2015?

Nicolai: That was at least, yeah, six, seven years ago no? One of your first courses in Malta.

Martin: I think it was the second or third course in Malta.

Nicolai: That's right.

Martin: I think so. The first one was in 2014. No, the first one was 2014, so maybe it was 2015. Yeah, good. Okay. So when did you, because now you offer marketing services, so when did you move into that kind of situation where you're like, Okay, I can offer this to other businesses now?

This is number 13 in the Talk Marketing Series where I am talking to Danny Lee who is claiming almost 4 decades of sales and marketing experience.

Martin: Good morning, Mr. Lee.

Danny Lee: Good morning. How are you?

Martin: I am extraordinarily well, thank you. How are you?

Danny Lee: Listen, I could be in a much worse position in life like you. I'm enjoying the benefits of being relatively self employed and looking after my own needs, which is good.

Martin: Fantastic. Excellent. Thank you so much for agreeing to spend this time with me, with us today. I know you're very busy man there in the greenbelt.

Danny Lee: Yeah, well, I would like to be busier. Everyone wants to be a little bit busier. But my life plan changed four and a half years ago. I'm not somebody who wants to do 60 hours a week again, I've been there and I've stepped right off that treadmill. So we'll cover that later on.

Martin: Okay, cool, but I thought I was under the impression that you didn't want to be busier. I certainly don't want to be busier. I've also done the 60 hours a week.

Danny Lee: I think what my needs are relatively small, but having a little bit just ticking along so yeah, there's always a bit of capacity to be a bit busy and my busy is more about doing stuff online, writing the new blog, doing a new journal, a new handbook rather than client busy.

Martin: Okay, cool. Yeah, no, so I'm definitely there. That's why I'm on this mission with this content, is because I've done a lot of for clients. I've done a lot for a lot of people. Now I feel like I'm kind of discharging my responsibility. So I'm busy sharing everything I know. I think it's gonna take me a couple of years to do that. I'm dragging in interesting people like you to get some of what you know, as well and then hopefully, I can just discharge myself entirely in two years time. I will have given the world everything I know. I'm going to go and do something that interests me more in future. Not that I'm not interested in marketing.

Danny Lee: Altruism is something that grows on us as we get older I think, I'm very much, slowly, heading down the altruistic route of what do I know, what can I give back, where there is some value for other people that I don't need to hold on to that anymore - I just give it away. It's a nice thing to do occasionally.

This is a cool one where Rik and I discuss brand, content, publishing, Ferraris and revolutionary communism.

Martin: Thank you so much for agreeing to, I'll put my teeth back in and say that with vowels, for agreeing to join me, spend some time with me on this Friday afternoon. We're here to talk about marketing. This is actually the 12th time I've done this and people take offense, you're probably the 12th most interesting person I've met in the last 20 years that I've been working in marketing, that's not true. You are the 12th most difficult person to get hold of and sit down with. So here we are talking about marketing, how do you feel about that?

Rik: Good. About talking about marketing? Or how do I feel about marketing?

Martin: We're gonna come to how you feel about marketing? How do you feel about talking about marketing first?

Rik: Great, great. I think you have a challenge stopping me.

Martin: Okay. That's good. That's good. So I've given you an idea of the format, the format is really quite simple. I'm going to ask you how you're qualified to talk to us about marketing, how you feel about marketing, what it is that you do, how you offer value to your customers, and then kind of how you feel about the situation that we find ourselves in currently, and what your recommendation is for people who are looking to invest in their marketing. That normally takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

Rik: Let's do this. Let's do it.

Martin: Okay, good. So tell us, what do I call you in a professional context? I call you Rik, do I call you Richard? Do I call you, Rick?

Rik: Rick. Rick works?

Martin: Okay, good. Rick, tell us how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing?

Rik: A combination of factors, I think there's some education there, but the education is - I still had hair when I learned stuff, so I don't think that's very valid any longer. So I think it's a question of quite a lot of experience at this stage, using what we have learned. What I learned back at university, that was a pre-digital age, so that it's, it's quite, it was quite different at the time and applying it through quite a lot of experience both stuff for ourselves for quite a long time and running Switch now for eight years from a digital point of view, and then the rest of the agency for about five of them. Yeah. So that's, that's why I guess, doing a good job with most of the stuff that we work with, or most of the people that we do work with, getting good results, and enjoying doing what we do, which is I think, the biggest player.

Okay, cool. So you run an agency called Switch?

Rik: Yes, I do.

Martin: And you have been running that agency for the last five years.

Rik: I've been running the agency. Switch started off as a brand agency and I started a digital agency besides Switch eight years ago and then we merged the agencies five years ago, because digital, the digital side became as large as the traditional side. Then we just sort of moved and became much stronger into the digital side of things as time went by. Now we're, I think, primarily a digital with a good arm for brands, but usually brands and digital still have to work hand in hand so digital is what we lead with.

Martin: So the format is, you can let us know how you've got on with that, the format is literally how you are qualified to talk to us about marketing? I know your speciality is YouTube ads, so kind of how you're qualified to talk to us about that, how you feel about marketing, kind of how you engage with your clients and what you offer to your clients. And then also kind of your recommendation, your experience of going through this crazy situation that we found ourselves in the last 12 months. So the beginning is how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing?

Tom: Good question. So marketing in general, I feel like I have a few tricks up my sleeve but I'm probably not the best generalist in the world. My specialist area is YouTube advertising, as you mentioned so that's where I can go really deep. I've been doing it for eight years. Prior to that, I was doing a lot in video, I was doing a lot in the SEO world and I started moving into more of the advertising space. I think I was probably one of the first people to be advertising on the YouTube Ad platform.

Since then we've done everything in a performance-based model in our agency. So instead of me working with clients and doing a traditional model where we will, oh sorry, most agencies will charge a monthly fee and a percentage of ad spend, that would be a typical setup for most agencies. The way that we do things is different. What we do instead is we say to the client, we'll do it purely performance based. So we'll fund the advertising and clients pay us for an agreed result. That's normally a good lead in, so to speak, to be like, I can talk about YouTube ads because my job is to get results for clients.

If that didn't happen, I wouldn't have an agency. I'm glad to say the agency is going very and we have some amazing clients that we work with, but it, it does feel like a partnership with all of our clients because we're only going to take clients on that. We can actually feel that we can get a great result with them and clients we want to work with, because we know it's gonna be a long-term partnership.

It's not gonna be the sort of thing where we'll run it for three months and then they'll say, great, I'm gonna move on to the next agency. We partner in such a way where like we're in it for the long run and we're willing to put over all of our resources into this. So we have a whole team of experts that are great on the scripting, the storyboarding, the editing, the running the accounts and the account management and everything else that goes with it.

A really interesting chat with James Owers, Sales trainer with 20 years experience.

Martin: Good morning Mr Owers, how are you?

James: Good morning Martin, I'm very well, how are you?

Martin: I am fantastically well, thank you. Thank you so much for agreeing to spend this time with me. I’ve given you a sense already of what's going on. I'm talking to people about sales and marketing is what I'm doing. I’m talking to you about sales, because you are a sales trainer and I have experienced your training and massively enjoyed your training and I have resold bits of your training when I've sold training as The Effective Marketing Company. So I thought if I'm going to speak to somebody about sales training, who am I going to speak to, I'm going to speak to Mr Owers. So here we are.

James: Okay, yeah, thanks for inviting me Martin. Do you want me to introduce myself? What's the best way of doing this?

Martin: Well you can, well you are going to introduce yourself yes. So the format is really easy. It's basically how are you qualified to talk to us about sales? How do you feel about sales? Kind of, what you give people when you're giving them sales training and then what are your recommendations for people in this weird situation that we find ourselves in where everything's gone through a loop? That’s the formula. Where we start is how you're qualified, so this is where you get to introduce yourself.

James: Okay I'll do that, you'll cut all that bit out?

Martin: No that'll stay in, and this bit's staying as well, it's not like a BBC style production, it's just, like it's just a chat with the most interesting sales and marketing people I know.

James: I know, you couldn't find anyone else and I picked up the phone.

Martin: Seriously, you're the first person I've spoken to about sales. There is somebody else on the list who's also a sales person, but no man, you were, when I sat down, when I decided to do this and I wrote a list of names, your name was on the list, and if you checked Facebook more often we'd have spoken earlier.

James: I try and avoid it, I try and avoid it.

Martin: Good, okay. James: I'll introduce myself so I'm James I've worked in sales, I think, for about, maybe, nearly 20 years now. I work for a large Japanese manufacturing company now as their training manager, their sales training manager, and prior to that I had my own business so I tended to develop sales people who sold technical products and services; IT, Telecoms and manufacturing engineering type products. That's what I've been doing and I've been working my current role for about six years. I look after a large sales team who are very, very, very, technically strong. That's a bit about me really. I’ve known Martin for a long time, we worked together at a telecoms company together, 2005 or 2006 I think it was, maybe it was 2005.

A really interesting chat with Alex Ryan of Marketing 101.

Martin: Okay good. Thank you for agreeing to spend some time with me this morning. We're not here to talk about the environment unfortunately. Unfortunately we're here to talk about marketing. I've had one conversation with you in my life, we spoke about what this was about. It’s interesting because you're the eighth person, we've established you won't be 007. You are the eighth person and it's interesting because it's going in a direction of its own. Where I started was thinking that nobody knows anything about marketing and nobody wants to invest in marketing.

I still think that but I can't find anyone who doesn't know anything about marketing; everyone I've spoken to seems to know perfectly about marketing and is perfectly prepared to do it. They are marketing people to be fair apart from Jim who introduced me to you. It's taking its own course which is nice and the conversations are probably more interesting than they would be if I was just left to my own devices. The way this works is we're interested to know, I'm not going to introduce you because I don't know you well enough to do that, I know you're doing some interesting things you can tell us about those. You can introduce yourself to us, you can tell us how it is that you are qualified to talk to us about marketing, where your career has taken you, what you've been achieving, those kinds of things. I'm interested to know how you feel about marketing.

I understand that you are offering marketing as a service now as a consultant so I'm interested to know who your clients are and what you deliver for them in the way of marketing value. We round off by talking about this weird, stupid situation that we find ourselves in and what your recommendation might be for people. That normally takes about an hour 10 minutes, if we're only talking for three minutes we can get back to the climate.

Alex: Yeah, if we're done in three minutes I probably don't know much about marketing, I could start there, I don't know anything about marketing. That's where Jim started, I know nothing. You may have to give me some prompts of those questions, I haven't got a great recollection, short-term memory wise. Alex: Okay. I can definitely start with who I am and why I do marketing, what I do marketing I guess. Martin: How you're qualified to talk to us about marketing, that's what I'm interested in.

A really cool chat with Alex Thomson of Growth Gurus based in Malta.

Martin: Good afternoon Mr Thomson.

Alex: Good afternoon Mr Henley. How are you?

Martin: I'm well thanks man, how are you?

Alex: I'm very good thank you it's a pleasure to see you.

Martin: Yeah it's good to see you too man.

Martin: So, listen, thanks ever so much for agreeing to spend this time with me. I've given you a sense of what this is all about. I'm interested to get different marketing perspectives, my big thing, the theme of everything I'm doing at the moment is why don't people understand marketing and why don't they invest in marketing. You know as well as I do this is how you get to be successful in business but people don't want to do the one thing that they need to do to make that happen which is their marketing. That's my angle at the moment but it doesn't have to be your angle, that's absolutely fine.

Martin: Where I'm coming from with you is … I'm getting different people's perspectives so like I've told you Ed was the first person I spoke to; he was working in marketing agencies in the 70s; Jem was working in digital marketing since 1992, before there was a web. I'm thinking of you guys, I know you started your business three four years ago, you are clearly much younger than the rest of us so I'm thinking of you guys as the young guns and I'm expecting to get a different perspective. How does that sound?

Alex: It's perfect. I'll give you a bit of a recap of where I started and where I am today and part of that involves you as you know so. I started, let's say, my marketing journey in the events industry. My life before being a digital marketeer was as an event organiser, DJ and music producer. I used to do that in the UK, and Amsterdam, and Malta and, for me, social media was my secret weapon, the elder generation of people in music hadn't quickly adapted to it and because I was there from the days of high five and everything else I was able to communicate quicker with younger crowds and that was my secret weapon. As a DJ I had the weapon of social media from the very early days which helped me rise up and find that as something interesting.

Alex: I studied in Amsterdam and got my degree in Audio Production, it must have been seven or eight years ago. I got robbed, essentially, by a venue that took absolutely everything. They had made me pay everything out for three months, that's all the events, all the expenses and everything, that was sometimes normal in our relationship but then come 01st of January the manager came hugged me and said I'm so sorry and I was like what was this guy doing? It was New Year's Eve, I had a few drinks, wasn't paying attention, next morning I went back to get my pay check, the entire place was deserted. Within eight hours they had emptied the place, left, and so I was out of pocket for the three months backwards, that's usually what you use to to live off in the entertainment industry, or in my case, for January, February and March.

Martin: Shall we start at the beginning? Can you tell us how are you qualified to talk to us about your part of marketing which is brand and identity?

Bobby: Yes. Thank you very much. My main current qualification is I'm the founder and creative director of Autotelic Arts, you can check our website out autotelic.art. What we do is high vibrational branding, the main focus of that is finding the most pure and powerful parts of my customers identities and then using those to build a brand that positions them as the pioneers of positive impact and change in their area of work.

I've had the company almost two years now and in this capacity I am specifically looking for positive impact businesses who, to get some guidance on that, could could be working in any one of the sustainability goals, there’s, I think, there's 12 or 17 of those. Any number of those and really, as someone who's an artist at heart, my intention is to use my creativity to help them make a bigger impact and to reach more people in a more effective way. Previously to that I've had a long career working in the digital industries in London. I've worked with tech startups leading the creative side for them and coming up with creative concepts. I've worked for multi-platform production agencies doing a lot of digital deliverables and I've worked for a lot of ad agencies during the boom period of flash, doing a lot of interactive rich media content. The general trajectory of my career has been coming from a creative heart but branching out to to work amongst the wonderful array of elaborate digital spheres that came up over the last 15 to 20 years.

Nowadays I've really come back to what's close to my heart which is the creative side and working very closely with people to realise a high vibrational identity and brand for them.

Martin: Okay, so that's interesting. So you've done traditional businesses like tech startups who are your clients typically now? Who are you working with currently?

Bobby: Typically my clients will be in the personal development or spiritual development worlds. They will be highly empathic and very talented, compassionate professionals who use their skills to help others grow and transcend their life context; either heal trauma or grow and develop greater capacity to go about their own lives. To give you a quick example that might be yoga. For instance, one of my clients is called The Baptiste Foundation and they take the the healing and the personal development capabilities of yoga into underprivileged communities like inner city kids. They're very active in the states, primarily based there. Another client is a psychologist and clinical sexologist who is also a Wim Hof trainer and instructor. He created this wonderful program that focuses on a three-day retreat where he uses the the power ...

Martin: Good afternoon Mr Fifield. Tim: Good afternoon Mr Henley.

Martin: How are you? You are looking extraordinarily well.

Tim: Yeah I feel strong, I feel vital, I feel energetic.

Martin: Excellent, let's hope I can cope with all of that this afternoon.

Thank you so much for for agreeing to spend some time with me this afternoon. I know this is going to be an interesting conversation because every conversation I've ever had with you has been really interesting. I don't know too much about you I've always known you as the most enthusiastic, most excited, most committed person networking around Sussex. I know that you do marketing, I've known you for 15 years, I don't actually know what kind of marketing it is that you do. What I'm interested to do is find out more about you this afternoon, how you're feeling about marketing and what recommendations you might make to people in this weird, awful situation that we find ourselves in currently.

Is that cool?

Tim: That’s absolutely superb.

Martin: Okay is there anything that you'd like to tell the very few people who will ever see this?

Tim: Well to your other friend I would like to say that essentially I show up in the world in three distinct ways. I am a Business Development Director for a company called Britweb who are a full-service digital agency based in Sussex, so that's one tick. The other tick is I am highly theatrical, I write plays, direct and occasionally I appear in plays. I'm also the Training Director for a networking organization which is global but my particular area is Sussex so three distinct ways that I show up in the world.

Martin: Fantastic, I’d forgotten all about your comedy and all about your acting, I miss that man. I forgot all about your theatrics, actually I didn't forget all about your theatrics at all.

That kind of brings me to my first question, which I always ask which is how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing? What is your marketing experience ? That's the question, how are you qualified to talk to us about marketing.

Tim: Great question. Essentially my background in marketing goes back probably to 1997 when I started my first web design business. At the time it was all about technology and it certainly wasn't about business opportunity, it was just about getting stuff online. Over that time, obviously, we've had huge amounts of change in the digital space and I've gone along with that. Now I'm helping advising businesses from startup through to corporate global corporate brands, people like Electra who manufacture MRI scanners and CT scanners. etc. Advising them on the best way to take advantage of the web, to deepen and widen their digital footprint.

Martin: Good morning Mr Kile

Chuck: Good morning Martin, how are you? I'm doing good yourself?

Martin: I'm really good thank you, thanks for taking the time to speak to me, I understand you've seen bits of some of the videos, I don't know if you know what I'm up to. I'm on this mission with my what the fuck series that I was talking to you about, whenever that was, two years ago. It actually was in production for the first part of this year and then the pandemic came and screwed it all up but I'm on that mission again now.

My take is that I ran a marketing agency for nine years properly and it was torture. I kind of feel a bit like Oliver Stone, I spent my time in the trenches and now I'm not in the trenches anymore it's my opportunity to tell the world about the horrors that went on with a view to making marketing easier and more accessible to other people.

The reason I wanted to speak to you is because you're quite different from the people I've spoken to before. I started with Ed, Ed was working in agencies in London, marketing agencies in London, in the 70s. I spoke to Jem, Jem was working on the internet before there was a worldwide internet since 1992. I spoke to Jim, Jim's a business owner who was cheating SEO right at the very beginning and did very well out of it and has learned all those lessons. Then I spoke to Ionut who's ex-agency now internal marketing department, head of marketing, no he's not head of marketing, he is the big one, chief marketing officer, that's what he is.
