The Fulltime Podcast Producer: Recent Episodes

Isaac Smith

Podcasting is a vehicle we use to establish our expertise in the minds of others and to connect with different professionals we would otherwise never be able to meet. People leave money on the table when they get caught up in the idea of growing a large audience and then becoming the next Joe Rogan. You don’t have to have a massive audience in order to see a net gain in your business as a result of having a podcast. And you don’t have to be the person behind the mic in order to make money in this industry.

Whether it be leveraging your podcast to grow your network’s reach or leveraging your skills to start your own production business, there is a lot you can do by having your own show.

I have over 8 years experience in audio production and have worked on over 20 shows, but you don’t have to have that to become a podcaster or a podcast producer. I would like to show you how.

In this show, I’ll teach you what you need to know about the podcasting industry and how to approach podcasting with a mindset that gets you closer to your end goals.

Can everyone see your show in search? Can YOU see your show in search? When you open Spotify or apple, does your podcast even show up?

If there was one thing I could change about podcasting, it would be that they would do a better job with their search engine. One of the advantages of YouTube that we dont talk much about is that YouTube is treated as a data base. You can type in a question and get video results. Podcasting is nothing like that, I can ask a question or list a topic and get results that have nothing to do with what I say.

So how do we get around this?

In this episode, I talk about:

+The problem with podcast searchability

What if you could pick and choose the people you wanted to network with? What if you could prequalify a lead and have a 30-minute relationship-building conversation with them? Would that help your business?

If you are needing to generate leads for your business, you can have on potential clients and potential partners for other opportunities.

**So want to be a guest on another person’s podcast.

Be cautious, because there is definitely a right and wrong way to go about doing that.**

A lot of requests to be a guest on another podcaster’s show go unread and unanswered.

The key to getting invited isnt just to stand out, it is also to be short, direct, and respectful of their time.

So many podcasters who reach out make it all about “me, me, me”. Lets talk about how to avoid doing that.

In this episode, we will talk about:

+What is wrong with how a lot of podcasters reach out.

+How you can make your request simple and direct while standing out.

The #1 complaint across ALL studies pertaining to podcast audiences, always has something to do with audio quality.

We have all heard those shows, they start and we immediately hear the background noises of the room being picked up on the recording right before we hear an inhale and then a greeting from the host as their echoing voice projects across their table and into their computer’s built-in mic. And after just a few seconds of that, you will choose to either listen to another episode or stop listening to the show completely. It’s not that they are a bad host or that the topic is bad, but you just don't want to listen to such poor sounding audio for 15 minutes to an hour no matter what the topic is.

But what if I told you that this issue is easier to fix than you might think. And that fixing your audio is as simple as learning some basic editing and investing in a simple microphone that will plug right into your computer?

In this episode, we will talk about:

+Alternative options to the common DIY tools used to record podcasts today.

+What easy and free software are available to you for enhancing the sound of your podcast.

+My-go recommendations if you are ready to invest in a microphone so people can listen to you clearly.

Who is your podcast for exactly? A lot of us know what we want our show to be about but what a lot of people need to put more thought into is, “who is their show meant for?” and “what kind of audience are you trying to attract and connect with”.

Do you know what their interests are? Do you know what their background is?

Do you know what pain points they may have?

As the saying goes, if you try to help everybody, then you wind up helping nobody… well the same goes for podcasting. But with a little time and insight, you can identify who it is your show is for and enjoy the clarity it provides you when you are planning your episodes and deciding on what kind of value it is you need to offer.

In this episode we will cover:

+The benefits of Identifying your target audience

Who is your ‘Ideal Client”

Lots of us who are in business have heard this asked when we are first starting out. Lots of sales and business coaches may even have this as part of their material.

**But this is where you are at. You have established what it is you do, You know what your services are going to be and how much your time is worth. Now you just need to know who’s buying.

Well there is a little more work that needs to be done. There is a saying in podcasting, “If you target everybody, then you reach nobody”**

Your next step is going to be narrowing down who it is you want to work with. This is an important step because it will help you know who to focus your time on and it will help you avoid clients that are just not a right fit to begin with.

In this episode we will talk about:

  • How to narrow down who it is you want to work with
  • What questions do you need to ask before deciding on a target client base
  • How to create a target client avatar.

This is part 3 of our 5 steps to becoming a podcast producer. If you havent listened to the other episodes yet, listen to them here.

**How long should my podcast episodes be?

Do I need to talk for an hour? Half an hour? 10 minutes?

How do people determine what length is right for them? How do you know how long your audience wants your show to be? Can having the wrong length for my show impact it negatively somehow?**

I get it. There are a lot of different successful shows out there, but they are all different but you dont know which example to follow.

The answer that nobody wants to hear is, of course, “it depends”

Dont worry though, in this episode we break it all down. We’ll cover:

  • How to find out what length is right for you
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of each option
  • Impact on Listen Through Rate (LTR)

**Can You make money by editing someone else’s podcast?

You have the process down and you know you could replicate it for someone else…maybe even 2 someone elses or more, but HOW do you do it?**

Specialists and technicians can feel like they are at a dead end when it comes to actually converting their tasks and operations into services they can provide for other people.

But others are doing it, why cant I?

**The bridge between being able to do something and actually being paid to do it, comes down to presentation.

+Have you made a list of the tasks you are able to do?**

+Have you made a list of tasks you are NOT able to do?

+Have you outlined these tasks as a package or as a proposal that you can put a price tag on and share with prospects?

**In this episode, we skim the surface of what it looks like to start converting your talents into an actual product.

This is part 2 of our 5 steps to becoming a podcast producer. If you havent listened to the other episodes yet, listen to them here**.

Podcasting is a vehicle we use to establish our expertise in the minds of others and to connect with different professionals we would otherwise never be able to meet. People leave money on the table when they get caught up in the idea of growing a large audience and then becoming the next Joe Rogan. You don't have to have a massive audience in order to see a net gain in your business as a result of having a podcast.
