We are excited to be starting this new podcast which will contain all sorts of topics related to the practice of pharmacy. We will include guest speakers from as many practice sites as possible, representing the multitude of backgrounds our great profession and the FPA itself contain.

Today we have with us Dr. Joe Spillane. Dr. Spillane is a Clinical Toxicologist who works as an Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Practitioner at UF Health in Jacksonville. He has an extensive background working in the emergency department and has a finger on the pulse regarding trends with various substances and will be providing us with that information today.

Today we have with us Dr. Sven Normann. Sven is the former Director of the Poison Center in Tampa, Florida as well as previously directing the Working Professional Pharm.D. program for the University of Florida for 21 years before the program and he retired. Currently, he is a Clinical Pharmacist at the Orlando Regional Medical Center and Lead Pharmacist on the Florida-6 Disaster Medical Assistance Team with the US National Disaster Medical System and is a charter diplomate of the American Board of Applied (Clinical) Toxicology.

Today we have with us Dr. Joy Wright.
Joy is currently the Region 1 Director on Florida Pharmacy Association Board of Directors, as well as the chair of the Public Affairs Council for FPA. She is also very involved with other pharmacy associations including being the current President of her local Pharmacy Association, ACAP. She works full-time as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy specialist in an ambulatory care clinic and has a consultant pharmacist role with a variety of health care sites. She mentors and precepts many students each year and has an interest in Functional Medicine in which she is pursuing additional certifications for.

Today we have with us Jerry Moe, who retired last year as the National Director of the Children’s Programs at Hazelden Betty Ford. Jerry is an advisory board member of the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA), and he is an author, speaker and consultant on issues for children and families hurt by addiction. Among his books are Through a Child’s Eyes: Understanding Addiction and Recovery and the Beamer Series for kids. Jerry’s work is featured in the PBS documentary Lost Childhood and with Emmy Award winning programs on both Nickelodeon and Sesame Street.

Today we have with us Dr. Anita Jacobson. Dr Jacobson is a clinical professor at the University of Rhode Island and the Program Director of the Community First Responder Program. Her clinical practice site is Eleanor Slater Hospital and her work experience as a pharmacist includes community and long-term acute care, as well as clinical practice in a variety of ambulatory and acute care settings
Dr. Jacobson’s teaching focus centers around case-based learning, patient simulation, motivational interviewing, OSCEs, and patient counseling. Her scholarship focuses around improving pharmacist-patient communication, especially related to vulnerable patient populations and/or conditions associated with stigma, such as mental health and substance use disorders.

Today we have with us a special guest, Anna Dos Santos, Program Supervisor of Operation PAR. PAR (Parental Awareness and Responsibility) is a non-profit organization that serves a large population here in Florida (mostly the southwest coast). They consist of a detox program, residential programs, outpatient mental health, and other services specifically made for men, women, and adolescents.
We greatly appreciate you spending your time with us today on the podcast we are so thankful for the work you tirelessly in order to curb substance use disorders. Today we have with us Dr. Bruce Berger, Emeritus Professor at Auburn university and President of Berger Consulting. Dr. Berger has spent years teaching motivational interviewing and methods to improve patient adherence and has written hundreds of publications on the topics. He holds a masters and Doctorate degree in social and behavioral pharmacy which has shaped his professional lifelong expertise in the field. He has been a consultant and trainer for dozens of organizations including the US Air Force and Army, Pfizer, Humana, and many more. Dr. Berger has received numerous awards for his work and we are fortunate to speak to him today about some significant pharmacy issues which are affecting pharmacists, the profession, and our patients.

Dr. Joshua Lenchus is the 146th President of the Florida Medical Association. Dr. Lenchus is Chief Medical Officer for Broward Health, a health system with more than 30 locations throughout Broward County.
Dr. Lenchus joined Broward Health in 2018 as Chief Medical Officer for the health system’s flagship hospital, Broward Health Medical Center. He became interim Chief Medical Officer for Broward Health in 2021 and recently accepted the position on a permanent basis. An FMA Executive Committee member since 2014, Dr. Lenchus has held leadership roles including President-Elect, Speaker, and Vice Speaker, in addition to serving on several councils and committees. He is also an FMA PAC member, Past President of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Past President of the Miami-Dade County Osteopathic Medical Society, and he has been an active member of many other medical organizations at the national, state, and county levels.

Dr. Jones drives NCIPC’s strategic direction by overseeing the refinement of the scientific research agenda and the coordination on the NCIPC strategic priorities of drug overdose, suicide prevention, and adverse childhood experiences.
Prior to joining the CDC, Dr. Jones served as the director of the National Mental Health and Substance Use Policy Laboratory at SAMHSA as well as serving within the US Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA. We are very excited that Dr. Jones will be one of our featured speakers at our upcoming virtual clinical conference February 4th and 5th so be sure to register for that excellent meeting as we have put together some tremendous speakers.

Today we are fortunate to have with us a newly elected Representative to Florida House District 5, Shane Abbott. Shane is a pharmacist who graduated from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) College of Pharmacy in 1998 and became the co-owner of the Prescription Place in DeFuniak Springs. He has served as vice-chair of the Northwest Florida State College Board of Trustees and on the board of the Emerald Coast Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I know everyone is excited to hear a few words from Shane today as we talk about his journey from independent pharmacy owner pharmacist to politician and discuss ways in which other pharmacists and pharmacy students can get involved in the process.
