Does it sometimes feel that no matter what you do, your progress is really slow nowadays, and it seems that you are far away from achieving advanced levels of English? Well, my friend. Welcome to the intermediate plateau. A plateau is a period of little or no progress in your learning journey. Every language learner gets stuck here and it’s hard for everyone to go through this phase and finally reach advanced levels. Arriving at a plateau and feeling stuck with your English is completely normal but it’s possible to push past it, go through it and reach higher levels. First you need to understand why you are in this situation and this is what we will talk about today.Music by John Sig from Pixabay--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/english-unite/message

We see a lot of schools, teachers and social media posts about American English vs. British English. As if there were only these two language variants in the world. This kind of approach to English learning is elitist and it excludes the majority of English speakers in today’s world: non-natives.
This approach to English learning slows down your ability to communicate with different groups of people. It limits your fluency. In this week’s podcast I talked about the importance of becoming a global English speaker and the benefits of that in today’s international job market.

In this podcast, Dan challenges the idea that learning more and more grammar and vocabulary will help you speak confidently. If you haven't practiced what you have already learned enough, your speaking struggles will continue.

If you are an English language learner, then you have probably seen or heard the word "native speaker" a lot. Nowadays, it seems like everyone is saying that you MUST sound like a native speaker if you want to have good English.
But imagine if you did not have to sound like a native speaker to have good English. Imagine that you could be a very good speaker, even a fluent speaker, without sounding like a native speaker.
You don't have to imagine it because it's already true.
Sounding like a native speaker should not be your goal in 2023. In fact, trying to sound like a native speaker actually slows down your English progress.
We are going to tell you why in this week's podcast.
