Dr. Paul Hauptman, Dean of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM), interviews our faculty who are on the cutting edge of medical education, research and patient care. UTGSM, located in Knoxville, has a national reputation in medical and dental education and is building research programs of national merit. UTGSM is a growing enterprise of faculty and research with more than 200 residents and 400 faculty (both full-time and volunteer) in 11 residency and 15 fellowship programs in medicine and dentistry. Dr. Mark Rasnake is an Associate Professor of Medicine who specializes in infectious diseases. He is also the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency. Keith Gray, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery who specializes in surgical oncology. He is also Chief Medical Officer of The University of Tennessee Medical Center and is active in physician leadership initiatives and the development of impactful interventions that address health care disparities within the local community. Dean Hauptman chatted with Dr. Gray about why he chose to become a surgical oncologist and his focus on creating better access to health care for under-served communities.
Heath Many, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery who specializes in trauma and critical care surgery and is also active in overseas mission work. Prior to joining GSM faculty, he lived in Kenya for six years providing medical education and surgical residency training. Dean Hauptman chatted with Dr. Many about why he chose to become a surgeon and why he has a passion for teaching overseas.
Deidra Mountain, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery who specializes in vascular and endovascular research. She is also the Director of the Undergraduate Research Experience. In the Faculty Lounge, Dean Hauptman chatted with Dr. Mountain about her research on liposomal nanoparticle drug and gene delivery systems and how she is using it to help create therapies for patients with vascular disease. They also discussed GSM's Women in Science program, which has helped fund some of Dr. Mountain's latest work, as well as a new program called Advancing Access to Careers in Medicine Scholars Program (AACMSP) that Dr. Mountain assisted in launching. AACMSP is designed to help undergraduate students, particularly from historically underrepresented groups in medicine and science, gain access to experiences in translational and clinical research. Jillian Lloyd, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Lloyd specializes in breast cancer surgery, and Dean Hauptman chatted with her about the reasons she became a surgeon; her interests in issues of patient adherence and public health; and the challenges she has faced as a female doctor. She also tells a powerful personal story that had an influence on her approach to patients and illness.
Dr. Anthony Wilson is Associate Professor of Family Medicine with expertise in rural primary care as well as the health care needs of the LGBTQ community. Dean Hauptman chats with Dr. Wilson about being a rural physician in Dr. Wilson's hometown, his transition into academics, and the launch of an elective rotation for medical students that focuses on LGBTQ health care.
