Sometimes you get lucky with the light on a location portrait shoot and it's perfect for the look you're after. But as photographer Gavin Hoey sees it, if you're adding light to your scene you need make sure what you add looks better then what was already there.
In this video Gavin goes on location to shoot a vintage portrait in a field of long grass. After assessing the quality of the ambient light he uses off camera flash to make the recorded light a lot more dramatic.

Using fabric as a background for your studio portraits has many advantages but fabric can be expensive, especially when you need a wide width. Photographer Gavin Hoey ran into the same problem when he first started shooting and his solution was simple. Bedsheets as backgrounds.
Bed sheets come in many sizes and an almost endless variety of colors and patterns. In this video Gavin tests out three black duvet covers, one plain, one with stripes and finally one with a damask pattern in his small home studio.

Photographing sparklers is great fun and can create a wide variety of images. In this video Gavin Hoey shares his tips for creating simple but beautiful sparkler shots by placing a light bulb in front of the sparkler.
Gavin also shows you how to light the front of the bulb and then dives in to Photoshop for a quick tip on how the merge the two shots together.
This is a great technique to use around 4th of July, Guy Fawkes night, Diwali or new year celebrations but always keep safety in mind. Never touch a lit sparkler and place spent sparklers in water.

Getting the most from a single prop is a challenge that can only improve your portrait photography. In this case Gavin Hoey uses a basic black sun hat as his prop and that includes it in five different looks.
Hats can cast shadows on a model and ruin your photos but Gavin has some top tips for both eliminating shadows and deliberately keeping them for a touch of drama.

Sometimes using props that a bit old and battered in your portraits can add some real character. Of course it's not always possible to find the perfectly aged item you need and that's the case in this shoot.
In this video Gavin Hoey takes a brand new sheet of 6mm polycarbonate and sets about making it look like a grungy window. First he tries a non destructive approach with creates images that aren't what he's after.
Gavin's next idea is to scratch the surface of the sheet with a wire brush and then chip the edge of the polycarbonate with a small hatchet. The end result really does look like a grungy glass window.

In the second part of Plan It, Shoot It, Edit it's the day of the vintage explorer shoot and Gavin Hoey brings you along for a behind the scenes ride.
Starting in his small home studio and then moving outside to the main location, Gavin combines flash with ambient light to create some stunning location portraits. But just when it looks like the photography is over, Gavin stops off for a few bonus sunset shots.

In the first part of Plan It, Shoot It, Edit Gavin Hoey takes you behind the scenes as he puts together a photo shoot with a vintage explorer theme. This video covers location scouting, outfit creation and finally a test shoot.

Sequin fabric looks great but from a photography point of view it's difficult to light. Hot spots and sparkly patterns will appear almost randomly which makes the light on your model very hard to control.
Fortunately photographer Gavin Hoey has a solution. His advice is not to hide from the problem but embrace the sparkles and use them to create you own instant background effect.
In this video Gavin will show you what size of light enhances the sparkly effect and tries out three different lighting styles to create very different looks.

Less is more is a great tip for portrait photographers and in this video Gavin Hoey shows you how limiting your colour palette can create portraits that really pop.
Gavin starts with a blue background and adds blue props, make-up and outfit to the model to get the colors to match. Then the model swaps to a red look and Gavin creates a matching background by using colored gels on to a great background in his small home studio.

Photographing reflective surfaces is always a challenge but when that surface is your entire background it can produce some incredible images. The trick, according to Gavin Hoey, is to manage the reflections from your lights and accept that they're always be there.
Follow along as Gavin walks through is reflective corner lighting, adds a splash of color with gels and final fine tunes the image in Photoshop.

Shallow depth of field portraits look amazing but getting a good shot with flash is more tricky then you might think. Using flash technology like High Speed Sync (HSS) makes shooting wide open, whilst overpowering the ambient light, simple. In this episode Gavin gives great tips and advice about how to shoot wide location portraits without seeing the flash.
Using a wide angle lens on a location shoot is a great way to tell the story of your subject by including their environment. However if you want to light them with flash, keeping the gear out of the wide frame can be tricky.

Recently Mark Wallace challenged Gavin Hoey to photograph the same model with the same lighting gear, in the same location as he did. Using just a single speedlight and a small softbox, Gavin set out to create a shot with plenty of contrast and drama. An old book and some powder were added as props and after a bit of experimentation with the light and a little tweak in Photoshop, the challenge was completed.

With more and more cameras doing away with low pass filters, moiré is something that photographers are encountering on portrait and architectural shoots.
