Erik S. Donough (BM Ed., Ithaca College; MA Music Performance, Montclair State University, Alpha Epsilon Lambda Honor Society), a multi-instrumentalist and conductor, is enjoying his 36th year of saxophone playing. His teachers include Dr. Paul Cohen, Dr. Steven Mauk, William Shadel, and Peter Potosky. He also studied double reeds under Charles Pillow and flute under Carron Moroney.Mr. Donough has performed in over 70 productions from the scholastic level to Broadway, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall with artists including Tim Janis, Matthew Morrison, Joe Alessi, and Alan Baer. He currently performs with The Metropolitan Saxophone Quartet and local music ensembles. Mr. Donough teaches eighth grade instrumental music in Livingston, and is on staff with the Livingston High School Marching Lancers. Jen and Erik have a sobering conversation with Dr. Amy Bovin about women in the band directing profession, focusing on the secondary level. Dr. Bovin's research is the largest of its kind, reflecting on the experiences of more than 1,000 directors throughout the United States, and the data shows some disturbing trends for the band world. Jen and Erik bring on Jen's husband Tom to discuss teaching in a small school and small school district. Tom chats about his back story, setting up logistics for a day packed with different classes while making the most of space. We also touch on the plusses and minuses of recruiting in small school. Tom discusses picking literature after COVID, when his numbers got even smaller, and Jen talks about how she deals with less than ideal instrumentation by splitting bigger sections.
