She is also someone whose name you will immediately recognise if you are a part of the Australian Legal Innovation and Technology community, where she has a super strong network.

In this episode, we explore that shift. We talk about how and why she opted out of the partnership track and how she embarked upon a very deliberate and brave path of career reinvention. We discuss:

Alison Cusack is Australia'a most famous maritime lawyer. And in this episode we learn why.
Alison is absolutely fabulous. And the definition of someone who is boldly carving out their unique place in our legal profession. She has defied ALL the conventional legal career wisdom and advice to achieve her success.
She dropped out of Electrical Engineering at Melbourne University to study Law/Business at Victoria University. She then did a generalist ATO Graduate program, before she landed an inhouse legal role at global shipping company ANL.
After ANL, she wanted to gain private practice experience. But she obviously did not have it... And the law firms she applied to required it.
So what did she do?
She started her own law firm to get that private practice legal experience.
It was only meant to last 6 months before she got herself a "proper" law firm job. Five years later, Cusack & Co, and Alison Cusack are both thriving. She represents massive global, billion dollar clients and is consistently nominated for industry awards. International law firms are her “competition” and she markets herself via comics.
In this honest conversation Alison and I cover how she successfully navigated this very twisty, alternative legal career path, as well as:
I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.

In today’s episode I sit down with Hannah Ferguson, the 24 yo Founder and CEO of Cheek Media. Cheek Media is a news commentary platform that sits at the intersection of social, political and feminist news. Prior to this, Hannah studied law, and was enjoying a really bright and fulfilling legal career.
When we sat down for this honest conversation in February 2023 Hannah was just a couple of months into a very exciting new career chapter. At the end of 2022 she made the bold decision to quit her sensible – and excellent – role as union representative – and packed up her life and moved from Brisbane to Sydney to go full time at Cheek Media, and in the depths of writing her first book. This is the sweet spot of where I think career development is at its most exciting and messy.
In the first part of this honest conversation, Hannah shares with us all through the steps that she has taken in her short but illustrious career to lead her to become Founder and CEO of Cheek Media. In the second part of our conversation we talk about Cheek Media.
I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.

Kim Koelmeyer is the epitome of someone who is boldly carving out their unique place in our profession. She is ambitious, kind, interested and interesting and it has been an absolute pleasure to see Kim create her own niche in Legal Communications and proceed with her career journey according to her own values and goals.
Kim studied Law and Journalism at Deakin Law School, graduating in 2020.
While she loved the law, she also loved writing and storytelling, her experience in CLCs made her realise that there was an imperative for diverse voices and perspectives to be celebrated in the legal profession. So, she founded the hugely successful and impactful Law In Colour.
Kim pursued a Communications Graduate role with the State Government and she recently landed a dream, ideal role for her at Justice Connect as Communications Lead where all her passions and experiences are combined.
In this honest conversation, Kim and I discuss:
Her law school experience
Why missing out on seasonal clerkships and a legal graduate role was the best thing that ever happened to her

Maddison is an employment lawyer, diversity and inclusion advocate and public speaker.
As you will learn from our very honest conversation, Maddison is an absolute firecracker and trailblazer. She is hilarious, ambitious, outspoken and extremely community minded.
Maddy does not do anything by halves. She does not anything by the book. This includes her legal career.
Maddison studied law at Griffith University, completed a couple of clerkships but did not get a graduate offer.
She commenced her legal career at Griffith University's in-house legal departments’ inaugural graduate program. While she initially did general corporate work she gravitated towards employment law. When COVID hit, she was seconded to the employment law team where she was advising the university on its costs saving measures (i.e. mass redundancies and not renewing employment contracts).
Unfortunately she experienced the same fate as many of her colleagues and found herself without a job in the pandemic.
How she navigated this is nothing short of bold, brave and inspiring.
And where she has landed is nothing short of impressive.
I hope you enjoy this honest conversation about Maddison’s legal career and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.

Caralee Fontenele enrolled in law school in her late twenties, and then, when she graduated, she set up her own law firm. Her first hire was a Principal Solicitor to supervise her and she brought in plenty of work for them both. So bold. Today she owns and runs the successful Collective Family Law Group which has three offices in Queensland and The Scalable Business Lounge where she helps other law firm owners scale without burnout, sharing many of the lessons she has learned the hard way.
How she got here is fascinating. Caralee dropped out of high school when she was 16 and got married and had babies young in her early twenties. She spent the first part of her twenties dedicated to family life and supporting her husband’s business. She admits, that back then, she left the finances to her husband and did not take any responsibility for her career. However, receiving the raw end of their divorce settlement was a harsh wakeup call, so she enrolled in law school in her late twenties and turned her life around.
This honest conversation with Caralee is a pep talk on getting your shit together, taking responsibility for your finances and career and reassures us that it is never too late to start.
I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation between friends and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you.

Cristabel Gekas is a Melbourne Uni JD graduate and People and Operations Manager at XY Sense, a tech start up using smart sensors and AI powered analytics to create workplaces that people love.
I met Crista when she was a law student whose sights were firmly set on a top-tier legal career. She was working extremely hard to tick all the boxes to get there – She was leading The Legal Forecast, para-legal and interning, networking up a storm and studying extremely hard. However, things did not go according to her carefully thought-out plan.
Crista’s interest in legal tech led her to realise that she was much better suited to more entrepreneurial and dynamic environments. She then realised that she did not actually want to become a lawyer. She is now killing it in the technology start up space.
In this honest conversation Crista shares with us:
Her long term ambition to study law
All the hard work she put into the seasonal clerkship process
What happened when she did not get a graduate offer
How her interest in legal tech lead her to a career in technology
Why she loves start ups
Her advice for others
Crista gets super honest and vulnerable about her clerkship experience and her perspective is an absolute breath of air.
I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you.

Even then, she was super clear on her ambition to pursue a career in legal operations and sought advice from me as to how to get there. In her relatively short, but super impressive legal career (she only qualified to practice in 2019) she has traversed various law firm roles to land inhouse at the BHP Legal Transformation team.
In this honest conversation Anne shares with us:
What it is like to be a first-generation lawyer
Her quest for “confident humility”
The importance of staying true to her values and goals
Behind the scenes of her accelerated career trajectory into legal operations
Her brilliant ‘week of enlightenment’
What she actually does on a day-to-day basis
Her decision to relinquish her practicing certificate
Her decision to move inhouse when her law firm career was excelling.
I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation between friends and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you.

Jacqueline Butler is one of my uni besties and a hot shot employment lawyer.
Jacqueline very fortunately found her passion for employment law in her graduate year and she has since worked both private practice and in-house.
In this honest conversation Jacqui shares with us:
Her employment law career journey (including the time she made the “wrong” decision)
The conscientious hard work that goes on behind the scenes to “have it all”
Readjusting career ambitions and priorities in light of motherhood
Whether there is such a thing as “whole life balance”
Her advice to others.
I have always admired how clear Jacqui has been in her goals and how conscientiously she works to achieve them.
I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation between friends and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you.

Rose

This episode is a juicy one. It was recorded at the end of Melbourne’s 1000th lockdown in 2021 at a time when we were particularly vulnerable, and it is the reason why I created this podcast.
Rachel Waters is very much a woman after my own heart, and indeed we have a lot in common.
Rachel studied Law/Arts at La Trobe Uni from 2007 – 2011, exactly the same as me. While we have mutual friends and knew of each other, we never had our own friendship.
Our paths crossed again last year at an industry event, and we immediately clicked. In catching up on what we had been doing the last 10 years we realised we had a lot in common. She had also lived and worked in London and packed a lot of different things into her career. She had been a judge’s associate, had gone to the Vic Bar, and was now in a policy role at the County Court.
And the other reason we immediately clicked at that event is that our conversation got really deep / really quickly.
She started telling me about the good, the bad, the highs and the lows and everything in between. She told me about how she achieved her dream of becoming a criminal barrister very early on in her career but then struggled when life at the Bar was different to how she had imagined. I had goosebumps and immediately knew that I was making new friend.
In this honest conversation Rachel shares with us:
Her unique career path;
Whether the legal industry is about what you know or who you know;
The art of creating your own luck;
What happens when you dream job is not exactly as perfect as you envisaged;
How to stay true to your unique career journey.
I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you.

Welcome to Rose Tinted Law The Podcast!
RTL is a professional development platform for curious and open-minded legal professionals. This podcast is a space to have honest conversations about legal careers with people who are boldly carving out their unique place in our profession.
I am thrilled to introduce to you Robyn Barnard. Robyn has led the career most of us dreamt of in law school. Since graduating from Melbourne Law School over 10 years ago she has held a Teaching Fellowship at a law school in China, passed the New York Bar exam and held various refugee advocacy roles in the United States - including NYC and LA (so cool!). Today she is Senior Advocacy Counsel, Refugee Protection at Human Rights First in Washington DC.
Sitting down with Robyn for an honest conversation about her career is the natural starting point for this podcast. We have been best friends since high school and RTL offers a perspective on professional development and exists as a resource that I wish we had to help us on our unique career paths.
I hope you enjoy this honest conversation, and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you.

It is fiiiiiinallyyyy happening, folks. I am launching a podcast!
I have recently been approached by so many people in my network - people I know IRL and over social media - seeking honest, authentic and useful career advice. In a profession that is so conservative and has such a stiff upper lip I realised that there was a real need for a platform where we can share our career journeys candidly and generously.
This podcast is a space to have honest conversations about legal careers with people who are boldly carving out their unique place in our profession.
I have some amazing guests lined up who I know you will love as much as I do.
Before I properly launch, I kindly ask that you do two things to help me spread the RTL word:
Please share this podcast with just one person in your network who you think might benefit from a fresh and authentic perspective on legal professional development.
Please like, subscribe and follow me on whichever platform you are listening to this from and follow me on my socials: @rosetintedlaw and on Linked In at Rose Inglis and Rose Tinted Law.
Thank you for your support.
