In episode nine, Agency Through Trustworthiness and Transparency, co-hosts Geneva Mayne and Kristen Ruiz are joined by special guest Jillian Paige of Meisner in Music in New York City. They talked about gaining expressive freedom through acknowledging the truth of what we are feeling in the moment. Trustworthiness and transparency is one of the six key principles of a trauma-informed approach. Creating and inhabiting safe spaces where we are able to truthfully acknowledge what we are thinking and feeling is an important part of trauma-informed voice care. In episode 7, Recognizing and Responding to Dissociation, co-hosts Kristen Ruiz and Geneva Mayne talk with special guest, Dr. Elisa Monti, about how voice care workers can recognize and respond to dissociation within a trauma-informed approach. Dissociation can occur on its own or be a symptom of PTSD and functional neurological disorder with communication symptoms such as muscle tension dysphonia. The four assumptions of a trauma-informed approach are: realizing the prevalence of trauma, recognizing signs and symptoms of trauma, responding in policies, practices and procedures, and resisting re-traumatization. You can see examples of dissociation in the You’ll Say Nothing documentary bonus material.

Dr. Monti is a voice-specialized experimental psychologist with a PhD from The New School for Social Research. In addition to the Voice and Trauma Research and Connection Group and the documentary, You’ll Say Nothing, you can learn more about Dr. Monti and her work at Monti Bianchi Performance Wellness.

In episode 6, Dismantling Power Imbalances, co-hosts Kristen Ruiz and Geneva Mayne discuss manual therapy as an agentic practice with special guest, Walt Fritz, PT. Though manual therapies can be highly effective, it is important for clinicians to explain what they are doing and why before palpating, massaging or repositioning a patient’s larynx. We also discussed how shared decision-making can help build trust and create psychologically safe interactions where power is shared between clinicians and patients or educators and students. Shared decision-making is integrated in trauma-informed approaches under the key principles of collaboration and mutuality; empowerment, voice and choice; and trustworthiness and transparency.

In episode five, In Pursuit of Obligation or Freedom, co-hosts Geneva Mayne and Kristen Ruiz are joined by special guest, Jeremy Aye. They discuss the challenges singers encounter when faced with the competing loyalties of vocal expectation and vocal authenticity. “Should Statements” are cognitive distortions that can increase anxiety and create self-defeating energies within the singers’ inner world, that then manifest outwardly in their experience of the physical world. The agentic practice of cognitive reappraisal or “reframing” positively shifts the lens through which one perceives a situation; thereby changing the meaning, thinking and behavior. Numerous studies suggest reframing prevents burnout, reduces anxiety, enhances communication, improves function and elevates overall quality of life.

In episode four, Petty Clapback, co-hosts Kristen Ruiz and Geneva Mayne are joined by special guest, Brian Petty, to discuss transitioning from a performance career to a clinical one. They also discuss discrimination and social support as social determinants of health. The peer support found in affinity groups such as L’Gasp – the LGBTQIA Caucus of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), is a key principle of a trauma-informed approach. Peer support helps to establish safety and hope, build trust, and enhance collaboration. Shared stories and lived experiences promote recovery and healing. In episode 3, Agency in Forgiveness, Kristen Ruiz and Geneva Mayne talk about forgiveness with special guest, Dr. Kittie Verdolini Abbott. Forgiveness is a shift in motivation away from retaliation and avoidance towards increased goodwill for the perceived wrongdoer. It plays a vital role in restoring social relationships, and positively impacts personal wellbeing and society at large. As a protective factor, forgiveness promotes resilience for people going through adversity or hardship. The choice to forgive (even if you have to make it repeatedly or over a period of time) is an act of agency where you are freeing yourself from the bondage of anger, resentment and living in the past. There is agency in forgiveness.

Episode 1: Build Your Tribe

Two agentic practices for people who have experienced trauma are to encourage the expression of gratitude and show signals of care through social support. These protective factors buffer the body against the harmful effects of toxic stress.

According to Dr. Kristen Neff, PhD, being kind to yourself through the deliberate practice of self-compassion (mindfulness, self-kindness and common humanity) is the best way to achieve personal goals such as regaining vocal agency.
