I wanted her to know I'm a person, not just a name on a paper..." These are the words of Sharon Holmes, a breast cancer survivor who initially had a "normal" mammogram, but three months later discovered she had stage II breast cancer. How is this possible? Unfortunately, Sharon was not alone.
Welcome to Episode 33 where we discuss the unbelievable case of Rachel Rapraeger, a mammography technician whose decisions and actions would negatively impact over 1000 women, including two women who likely died because their breast cancer wasn't caught soon enough. Because Rachel saw the women who entrusted her with their care as a number, or a backlog of cases, rather than human beings, she didn't "fully consider the consequences" of her decisions and actions. Depersonalization can kill and unfortunately, justice wasn't served for Rachel's Victims.

Have you ever stopped to think about how dehydration impacts your ability to care for patients? Probably not...but there is an impact! A 2018 study found that over 50% of nurses in hospital settings reported signs of dehydration during their shifts. The impact? Cognitive functions such as concentration, alertness, and short-term memory are impaired with dehydration, which can directly impact a nurse’s ability to perform tasks accurately and efficiently. This, in turn, can compromise patient care.
Welcome to Episode 23 where we discuss the impact of dehydration on patient care, and more importantly, what to do about it! Currently, drinks at the nurse's station are regulated by OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard...but what about a standard to mandate safe water storage on every unit.

On February 2nd, 2024, the TikTok account HeyThereParenthood posted a video clip from a podcast where the host, Jeena Wilder, recounts a story from the birth of her child. In that clip, Jeena discusses how the nurse didn't respect the boundaries Jeena had set forth, specifically not to touch her. When the nurse did touch her to check on the unborn child, Jeena admitted to punching the nurse. This incident has unleashed a flurry of reactions across the internet, pushing Jeena to release a response video addressing the situation. T

Johnson Veterans Medical Center, in Clarksburg, West Virginia. In this episode, we define these terms, discuss real-life examples, and more importantly, what to do about it. On August 7, 2023, Tristin Kate Smith died at home by suicide. In the wake of this tragedy, a letter penned by Tristin titled "A Letter to My Abuser" was uncovered by her family, written five months prior to her passing. Tristin was an Emergency Department RN.
This episode takes a deep dive into the contents of Tristin's letter, unraveling its heartbreaking significance and what it reveals about the state of healthcare today.
Additionally, we scrutinize a pertinent CDC study released just months after her death, titled "Health Worker Perceived Working Conditions and Symptoms of Poor Mental Health, 2018-2022." We discuss the study's findings and its impact on our understanding of mental health in the healthcare sector and critically examine the CDC's action plan alongside recent statements by Dr. Debra Houry, the organization's Chief Medical Officer. As we navigate these sensitive topics, we aim to honor Tristin's memory and shed light on systemic issues in mental health support for healthcare workers.

On July 9th, 2023, Jessica Ross and Treveon Isaiah Taylor Sr. went into Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale, GA, after Jessica's water broke. The couple was fully expecting to leave with a healthy baby. However, a horrific tragedy would bring that dream to an abrupt end. What's worse, the hospital staff is accused of attempting to cover up an unthinkable medical error that resulted in the decapitation of Treveon Isaiah Taylor Jr.

In 2020, over a 5-month period, 65 women entered The Yale Fertility Center, which is part of Yale New Haven Hospital for fertility care. Their experience can only be classified as horrific. These women were perplexed by their unexplained excruciating pain during the procedure, and even the doctors and clinic staff were unable to provide answers. In the absence of concrete information about the true cause of the pain, patients, families, and even the staff seemed to restore to creating their own narratives to make sense of it. Solving the nursing staffing shortages across the country is a complex issue. Recently both the AONL (American Organization of Nurse Leaders) and the ANA (American Nurses Association) came out with statements on minimum staffing ratios. So you just took the NCLEX and failed (or know someone who did). Now what? In Episode 16, we give our perspective on the next steps for success. If you did fail, please know you aren't alone. Recent data from NCSBN shows 2022 NCLEX pass rates fell below 80% (US first time test takers) for the first time. In Episode 7, we provide a counter-argument to an idea that is quite pervasive in nursing; that new-grad nurses should only/primarily go to Med/Surg to get training. There is a thought that new-grad nurses shouldn't go into specialty areas such as the ICU. We push back against this notion and encourage new-grads who are told, "you should only go into Med/Surg" to reply with, "Don't tell me what to do"! Follow your calling and your passion...wherever that leads you!

Welcome to Season 2! We are excited to be back and begin a journey with you on A Call to Compassion. In this episode, we lay the foundation for compassion in healthcare. Over the next few episodes, we will be answering the question..."Is compassion really important, or is it just something nice to do?" We will be exploring several possible reasons there is a lack of compassion in healthcare (regardless of if that is perception or reality). Caregivers, we MUST return to our original purpose in caring for other human beings...to do so with safe, high-quality, compassionate care!
Did you know in a recently published meta-analysis of the available literature on incivility in nursing, over 50% of nurses have experience incivility? And don't blame it on covid...the timeframe was from 1996-2019. Over 50%! That number is both staggering and unacceptable. In episode 24, we explore the topic of incivility and, more importantly, what to do about it.

It is estimated that nearly 50% of all health care professionals will experience Second Victim Syndrom at least once in their career. A study released in 2017 shed light on an alarming finding: of the female population, nurses are 23% more likely to commit suicide than women in general. This number has only risen in the last 5 years.
Episode 16 may be one of the most consequential episodes we have produced to date. We are drawing a line in the sand to say healthcare must do more to support caregivers who are second victims. We emphatically plead with our fellow nursing colleagues to help rid our profession of the stigma of mental health and to let someone know when you are "not OK".

98,000. A number that when put into context is really sobering. In 1999, the IOM published a study in "To Err is Human" finding that as many as 98,000 people die each year from medical errors. So what is the number today? While some have made educated guesses, due to a number of different factors, the true number is unknown. So, what do we as caregivers, as nurses do about it?
This is the first episode in a three-part series focusing on safe practice. In this first part, we explore four patient stories about the impact of medical errors. We share our perspectives on these, but more importantly, how they could be prevented. We share practical "walk-aways" for each story that can be put into practice immediately. Ultimately, zero harm is the only acceptable number.
