This episode is a recording of a talk our Athletic Director, Norie Mueller, gave to Veritas families at the start of basketball season. (She did not know it was being recorded. You'll notice a jump in audio when she talks about the season's logistics.) Enjoy!
This talk will invite listeners to consider how daily conversation with the God of the universe shapes and changes our lives. Participants will spend time in stillness, silence, mediation, and prayer.
Norie Mueller is a Veritas mom of four, admin team member, softball coach and Greenville native. Through life’s suffering and grief, she has learned how to lament and is still learning how to pray. Her favorite place to pray is her screened-in porch where you can find her most mornings with a cup of coffee.
The Young family has found much enjoyment reading Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy aloud together. They’ll share practical tips from their experience and hopefully convince you that it is worth the effort.
Morgan and Morgan Young (yes, you read that correctly,) have four children and love the way Tolkien helps them carve out time together.
When Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He is offered the whole world if He bows down and worships Satan. Interestingly enough, Jesus does not respond by saying, "this world is not even yours to offer." Perhaps this is why Paul calls Satan, "the prince of the air." He has great power in this life and as the father of lies, he knows how to use his power for our ruin. Milton makes this creature the protagonist of his great work, Paradise Lost. By looking at Milton's portrayal of Satan, we can get a glimpse at how he uses his power to deceive us and thus by God's grace, we may learn something about how to resist that deception.
Adam is a teacher and Upper School Principal for Veritas.
This breakout session will include helpful tips and tricks on not only how to order your home days with children in different stages from pregnancy to upper elementary but also how to order our own heart’s desires.
Farah Apicella, VPS teacher and home school parent for 12 years along with Jordan Chestnut, mother of four, and Jessica Korman, mother of five, will share their home day triumphs and tragedies and help get you starting your year off strong.
New to Veritas? Working mom? Multiple children? Older children? Wondering how to make school part of your family's life and not feel out of control? This session will provide both practical tips and suggestions as well as questions and topics to reflect on so that you can begin your school year with clarity, intentionality, and purpose for your family.
Betsy Hatten is the mom of six children who attend Veritas and is an Upper School science teacher.
Do we have a soul? Does it matter? In this talk we will discuss the existence of the soul, the beauty and irreducibility of the human person, and the greatest claim in history—that the Word of God became man.
Dr. Paul LaPenna is a neurologist and professor of clinical neuroscience. Dr. LaPenna speaks around the nation on topics pertaining to neuroscience and faith. He is married to Nicole LaPenna and has two children, one in 3rd grade and one in Kindergarten.
In this session we will look at a few short stories for children and not only practice how to teach our children but also spend some time reflecting on literature and its place in the Veritas curriculum.
Jon is the headmaster of Veritas and teaches our Aeneid for parents and senior great books course among other things.
Nicole and Tina will be sharing what it means to teach art at Veritas. We both value helping others to see beauty through art. Let’s discuss how our Christian, classical, university model influences the lessons brought to our community.
Nicole is a botanical artist specializing in graphite and teaches Upper School art. Tina is a watercolor artist and teaches Lower School art.
In this breakout session, we will seek to answer this question among others as we discuss spiritual practices, developmental milestones, and practical rhythms to use in and out of the home.
Jered Bell and his wife Katie have four children and are involved at Redeemer City Church where Jered serves as the Associate Pastor.
We will be looking at Scripture in English and (a little) Greek to identify how Christ’s incarnation informs how we educate our students. In addition, this session will hopefully help to spur conversations with your students as they translate the Latin Vulgate and Greek New Testament.
Mr. Semanie is a Greek teacher with an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a background in incarnational ministry from ten years of working and volunteering for Young Life.
What is Dimensions Math? What does it look like? How can I help my child succeed in math at Veritas? This breakout session will answer these questions and provide a sampling of problems to help you become more familiar with the curriculum and co-teacher responsibilities.
Laurel Hammond (Lower School Principal) and Kacy Lehn (Director of Child Development and Guidance; Director of College Counseling) will introduce math at Veritas from grades K-12.
One of the most memorable characters in C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia is a “priggish” boy named Eustace Clarence Scrubb, a boy whose understanding of the world and of himself has been shaped – or, rather, misshapen – by his “modern education.” But when suddenly swept into Narnia, Eustace’s adventures and transformative encounter with Aslan profoundly change the course of his life, leading him to attain and typify the marks of true manhood as Lewis understands them. This seminar will hold key moments of Eustace’s journey under the light of what Lewis says elsewhere about modern education, sex and gender, and divine grace, with the goal of furnishing us with a Lewisian vision of manhood that is as countercultural now as it was in Lewis's day.
Matt Miller serves as the City Director of the C. S. Lewis Institute--Greenville. He and his wife, Lindsay, are the parents of three students at Veritas: 7th grade, 4th, and 2nd.
Courtney Kenna is our lower school counselor and has extensive background in working with children with learning differences.
Is music just an extracurricular to check off your list, or is it shaping the souls of those who study it? How do we judge music and through what lens do we decide what is “good” music? This session will explore those questions and give you tools for practical music study at home with your children.”
Hannah teaches 6th grade music for Veritas and Laura Lynn teaches music to grades 1-5.
Please join us for a discussion on the maternal “mental load.” We will identify and make visible the cognitive and emotional labor largely required of women in the running of a household and family, particularly within a University-Model educational system. Additionally, our hope is to illuminate ways in which husbands may love and serve their wives and families in assuming ownership of and partnership in this invisible labor.
Kara and Charles Cole are parents to four children and are entering their 8th year with Veritas.
This training will better equip you to help your child become a skilled reader. We will explore how the brain learns to read, discuss the science of reading methods used during the K-2nd years at Veritas, and give practical tips about how to make reading lessons go smoothly on home days.
