In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the small island of Moorea hosts one of the world’s most innovative ocean research labs. Founded in 1985, the University of California’s Gump Station works from land to sea, leveraging all types of data to develop model ecosystems. In a project in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, local participants used a marine debris identification app to explore the intertidal zone and collect trash. .. They then shared that data with a coalition of NGOs, known as Suncoast Rise Above Plastics, that are working to stop single-use plastic.

Ernst Van der Poll is an Ocean Explorer and PADI Course Director with more than 10,000 dives experience. He grew up on the shores of Africa’s east coast and the Ocean is part of his professional life ever since.
During his 14 years in the Middle East, Ernst founded Tawasul, the very first marine-themed, place based experiential learning program in the region. The program engaged more than 2000 kids from 2002 to 2011, many of whom are studying marine sciences now. He was also appointed personal diving instructor and safety officer for the Crown Prince of Dubai and worked with Palestinian refugees with physical disabilities.
After moving to Costa Rica, he founded ConnectOcean and one of the first All ability diving programs in Central America, helping people with life changing injuries to enjoy the Ocean through scuba diving.
Today, Ernst conducts Corporate Team Building and CSR programs, and keeps on teaching scuba diving as his schedule permits. He collaborates with many internationally renowned educators, researchers and innovators in order to inspire the next generation of environmentalists and leaders.

A volcanic eruption in 1997 forced the relocation of half of Montserrat’s population. Veta Wade became a volcano refugee just as she was graduating from secondary school. Upon her return to Montserrat, Veta was even more committed to learn about ocean and marine life, spending all of her free time with fishermen in the area, feeding her passion. Veta learned to swim on her own, then snorkel. She then answered the call to inspire Caribbean children to become more involved in their own seascape and contribute to the solutions that would save our ocean.
Veta talks with Ocean Host Kate Wing about the formation of Fish 'N Fins, a program to teach children to swim and connect them to marine biology and science. How does the Healthcare sector impact climate change?
Frederik Van Duers, CEO of Green Innovation Group, tells Better Worlds that global Healthcare accounts for 4 to 6 percent of carbon emissions. Why? The usual suspects, but also single use devices, drug production and waste. incredibly “When drugs and devices are purchased by hospitals they enter Narnia and nobody knows where they go when they are disposed of, how many are wasted or how many are put to use.”
What helps? Delivering preventive service independent of material consumption that can be delivered through telemedicine, for instance. Can we advise people to do some of the habitual changes that are associated with better health outcomes, such as smoking? Prevention and preventive healthcare are the biggest opportunities to go to the inner circle of the circular economy.

When it started back in 1976 there were a handful of people who understood the offset interpretive ruling. Now there are 100,000 working on aspects of greenhouse emissions trading. Changing that would be futile. Look at the human capital, systems, history, thousands of transactions, culture, MRV, This concept has traction and it will and should be extended to other environmental commodities because we need these markets to reflect the price we are paying for destroying our habitat.”

Having gathered together an "emission reduction credit" or "ERC" buyers group, Aldyen developed and executed the world's first major forward ERC purchase agreement to finance carbon sequestration in agricultural soils, as well as the first ERC sales-financed carbon capture and storage project.

The consumer rate of carbon emissions is about 13 tons per year. The NFT is backed by 20 tons of carbon, so with each unique digital NFT purchase, the buyer also contributes to the sequestration of 20 tons of carbon dioxide. The mission is to make it "1-click" easy for consumers to make a difference in a way that aligns with their interests. The NFT, which Nihar describes not as an expense, but a commodity, is the first step in Eco-Sapiens vision for consumers.
The company is also creating the Eco Card, a fundamental product that applies to the holistic approach to carbon through a sustainable loyalty rewards program. Yet to be designed, Nihar talks about what the market for the cards could look like and how they may also serve to lower carbon lifestyles. Prior to co-founding Eco-Sapiens, Nihar was Head of Investment for Menlo Ventures across consumer, fintech and climate sectors. Menlo Ventures provides capital for seed through growth technology companies in the consumer and enterprise sectors. Working in the carbon market since 2011, mangroves are finally getting the attention they should have as a climate solution. In an interview with Better Worlds host Julian Guderley, Dr. Irina Fedorenko noted that the emerging market is still messy and not transparent because it didn’t receive enough attention in the past few years. At first an underdog, she is now on point with the trends in the carbon market, working with VlinderClimate and Caux Dialogue, and other organizations in unison to democratize the market.
Through a holistic approach, these organizations build teams and strengthen partnerships for mangrove reforestation projects, helping communities manage mangroves as a barrier between land and sea to protect land from increasing climate-change storms and the damage they bring. But they have a multitude of other benefits and through their efforts, communities see direct benefits that mangroves have on shoreline communities in social impact, habitat development and positive climate impact, and their own prosperity.
Mangroves, which Irina refers to in this podcast as “magical trees” due to their vast ability to create better ecosystems. Specifically, mangroves stabilize the shores, protect land from sea, holding rich nutrients in the soil, and sequester five times the carbon dioxide of the Amazon rainforest, the most important carbon sink in the world.
Irina talks with Better Worlds about how communities are benefiting from new mangrove-related business opportunities as well, citing new projects in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Kenya and Senegal.
Irina discusses how the shoreline communities are the key stakeholders in any mangrove effort. Nori is a company on a mission to reverse climate change by removing enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to lower the overall concentration of CO2 below 300 parts per million.
Paul founded Nori in 2015 when carbon removal not even a topic of discussion. Paul tells Better Worlds host Julian Guderley that he couldn’t find anyone who was pulling greenhouse gas-generating CO2 out of the atmosphere at that time.
Nori began its journey to create a sustainable system that will remove billions of tons of carbon dioxide a year and create stewards of the carbon cycle. Nori is not an ag company, but it is focused on regenerative agriculture to move more carbon is the only method capable of scaling to millions of tons right now. Nori is focusing on the supply side to make it easier for suppliers to generate projects and sell projects through standardized pricing across the different types of carbon removal.

She believes that just as startups from all over the world choose Delaware as a preferred jurisdiction for incorporation, the same will be true for DAO’s in Colorado under the Limited Cooperative Association (LCA) structure. One does not need to reside in Colorado, or even the United States, to form a Colorado LCA4, making it even more appropriate for global decentralized networks
The LCA is a hybrid between a limited liability company (LLC) and a corporation. It is an entity built on the law of unincorporated entities. Like LLCs, it allows for investor members, returns on investment to patrons and non-patrons, and voting rights for investors, while adhering to cooperative principles. Where it differs from an LLC is in the distribution of financial returns based on patronage activity, voting based on membership (one-member, one vote) or based on patronage, which allows for the integration of DAO based governance principles, such as rage quitting and quadratic voting.
