Hello Lovelies,
This is a solo podcast on the kinds of things that can help get us into action when we are stuck on a big project or something that's hard for us to do.
You'll hear about my writing process and some advice from the Intuitive Writing book my Jacqueline Fisch. She will be on the podcast in ~2 weeks talking to us more about her book and writing process.
Then I share some suggestions for using the rhythms of nature to plan your active times, planning sessions, and release schedules. While not everyone has a monthly cycle, I think you'd be surprised how much more easily things come when you plan around your energetics.
If you want to leave us a voice message, we are now on Speakpipe. I'd love to hear your thoughts or ideas on what catalysts work well for you.

And if you'd like to do a free coaching session with Cristy (to potentially be shared on air, though not before you review/approve the recording), feel free to schedule a preliminary conversation here.

This is an excerpt of the interview episode (episode 64). It is a practice for anxiety or before social situations from a Somatic Wisdom guest, Raina LaGrand.
Raina LaGrand (she/her) is a somatic therapist, yoga teacher, speaker and facilitator specializing in racial identity, trauma, relationships and embodiment. In her practice, Root to Rise Somatics, she primarily helps mixed race adults and interracial couples build relationships where they feel emotionally connected, and she also works with people of all identities when her schedule allows. Outside of clinical work, Raina provides embodiment-based workshops and trainings for companies invested in anti-racism and social justice. Raina lives with her dog on occupied Anishinaabe land (Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA).

I am delighted to have the opportunity to talk with Raina Lagrand for this episode.

In her practice, Root to Rise Somatics, she primarily helps mixed race adults and interracial couples build relationships where they feel emotionally connected, and she also works with people of all identities when her schedule allows. I hope you will enjoy our coverage of sensorimotor psychotherapy and how it helps us become more aware of our experience, following activation in the body, and becoming more embodied even if we have been through trauma.
We talk through how it feels to navigate spaces when we are "outsiders" in a group, not belonging necessarily to a particular group in a way. We need to understand broader context, and how some of our trauma is actually subconsious and and preverbal.
Healing these identities and having connections through family or learning aspects of our identity, beyond racial and cultural aspects. What do we value? How do we spend our time? What do we like to do? These all make up aspects of our value.
Sometimes we need to understand how our origin stories play into the become we have become. We also make choices about how we situate ourselves.
We speak about rejection sensitivity and how this plays a part not just in conditions like ADHD. Our mixed identities can sometimes lead to certain types of unknown rejection, and this can make us more sensitive to this process.
We explore the notion of being part of a "mixed" identity and how we need to serve as elders in a way, that this will be something we can created that we didn't have.
Raina explores her "Somatic Skills for Anxiety" class which available for purchase on her website.
To some extent, all of us struggle with interacting in groups. Loneliness is a big part of major health risk, and is at epidemic proportions according the Surgeon General.
Raina shares a practice called "the U turn" when she is working with couples, and things we can implement when we are working in relationship.
She offers a practice toward the end of our conversation to help ground ourselves.
Check out Raina's offerings at Root to Rise Somatics.
Her Instagram is also Root to Rise Somatics.

Hello My Lovelies!
I can't believe I haven't yet covered the topic of pleasure as a standalone episode. It's probably been embedded in some of the other themes we have covered. But I think this will be the first of a monthly series because it's a rich topic and there's so much more to cover.
Hope you enjoy the excerpts of my post Dance Church bliss and my reflections on the pleasure of solitude and letting my vacation mind wander.

Welcome to the first episode of season 3!
I am going back into the concept of intution and asking you to practice asking your body parts for wisdom, especially when you suspect you might be taking on too much.
We may be surprised when we tune into a specific question and ask our heart, head, or gut about a decision? Or maybe we tune into our shoulders instead for a less conventional check in to ask:
Where is it I'm overdoing things?
What are you carrying right not that feels like too much?
Give these a try and let me know what you discover!

Hi My Lovelies,
In response to our previous episode (58) with Dana Miranda of Healthy Rich on somatic practice to work with our difficult money stories.
I discovered from Bari Tessler's book The Art of Money workbook (from the podcast Inside Job with Nayla Bahri and Eric Johnson).
Tessler does a lot of the practices that I actually detailed in my book but she applies them specifically to our difficult emotions around money, and almost ALL of us have these, no matter how much money we make.
What I love is the 3 step set of practices for our money dates or money clarity sessions as I think of them:
Rather than avoiding bad feelings, it is helpful to lean into them, describe where they appear in our bodies and realize they are not going to harm us. We can physically resource ourselves and make our money clarity session into a comforting ritual can help us approach it more gently.
I actually walk through my own feelings about money regret so you can be with me during one of these practices.
Hope this provides some helpful support to you!
And if my work is helpful to you and you want to send me a birthday gift or make a contribution to support my work at the Somatic Wisdom podcast, my Venmo ID is @Cristy-DeLaCruz. ;-)

Hello My Lovelies,
This is a conversation about personal finance and the somatics of money. I know you'll appreciate the insights of my guest, and I am taking away quite a lot from our conversation.
Dana Miranda is a Certified Educator in Personal Finance® (CEPF®), an author and a personal finance journalist. She’s the founder of Healthy Rich, a platform for inclusive, budget-free financial education, where she works with organizations, schools and companies dedicated to making money better for folks who are often left out of the conversation about money.
Dana has written about work and money for Forbes, Insider, Culture Study, the New York Times, CNBC, The Motley Fool, NextAdvisor, USA Today and Inc. magazine, among others.
In our conversation we talk about "budget culture" as a parallel to "diet culture" in that it encourages at attitude of restriction rather than of enjoyment regarding money. We talk about the shaming that happens around unemployment and debt, and ways we can think differently about money.
I love her focus on inclusion of many different voices when it comes to money. I hope you gain additional insights about your own relationship to money, and the somatic impact of the way we think about and talk about money.
The Make Money Better podcast is published through Dana's Healthy Rich platform, which I highly recommend for a more diverse group of voices about the topic of money and personal finance.

Hi Lovely Listeners,

I am honest about some of the struggles I have had around money and you'll get to hear more in this episode.

Hello my Lovelies!
This is a full circle moment for me, an opportunity to speak with a podcaster and author I've admired from afar since 2018.
We geek out on topics like intuition, somatic and body-based wisdom, free time, neurochemistry, avoiding social media, envy, desires, opting out of parenthood, the auntie brigade, vulnerability, and salty podcasts. Such a juicy conversation!
Jenny Blake is an author and podcaster who runs a media and licensing company. She loves helping people move from friction to flow through smarter systems, powered by Delightfully Tiny Teams. She recently released her award-winning third book, Free Time: Lose the Busywork, Love Your Business (Ideapress, 2022).
Jenny is also the author of Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One (Portfolio, 2016), winner of the Axiom award for Best Business Book in the Careers category, and co-creator of Googles’s global drop-in coaching program, Career Guru. She hosts two podcasts with over 2 million downloads combined: Free Time with Jenny Blake for Heart-Based Business owners, and Pivot with Jenny Blake for navigating change.
Many thanks to Jenny Blake and her BFF community.

Hello Lovely Listeners!
Here's a brief intro on two topics which will be covered in further depth during my conversation with Jenny Blake for episode 56 (to be aired May 21st).
I touch on Intuition, with the briefest of summaries of what I've learned (mostly from lived experience but also from Penney Peirce).
Then I explore the notion of mimetic desire, specifically in the way Luke Burgis talks about it in his book, Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life.
This should help set the stage for the next episode so please be sure you're subscribed so you'll get the download automatically when that is published.

Hello Lovely Listeners,
I'm bringing you a "minisode" this week to encourage you to listen to nature, or to listen inward rather than listening to podcasts.
While you may decide to listen to a different show, maybe you will feel drawn, as I did, to listen inward and to slow down your input channels. Mercury is in Retrograde April 21 through May 14th, and Pluto just turned retrograde in Aquarius.
So whether you believe in astrological influences or not, there may be some collective energy in the zeitgeist that asks us to slow down and listen to ourselves. I'm honoring that in myself by not wanting to do a lot of editing, and I encourage you to do so as well. Maybe step away from your devices and give yourself an outside nature listening break!
This is very healthy for your nervous system and for your body.
I'll be back with you next week with a regular episode.

The audio on this one might not be up to my usual standard. I believe I've fixed the audio issue I was having through the kind support of people at Descript, but the sound might be a little more variable than it usually is. I'm blaming Mercury Retrograde!
This episode speaks about a process I have done annually since about 2016 after reading the book by Marie Kondo called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
Particularly in Western culture and in our capitalist society, we are taught the skill of hanging on and accumulating. But when we do this in excess it's actually not healthy for us. Clutter in particular can build up and become unhealthy or even dangerous to us. Physical clutter and mind clutter need to be processed and let go on a regular basis.
Sometimes letting go of physical objects is a way of helping train ourselves "let go" as a skill. This can include thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve you, and items which once had a purpose but are not just taking up space.
I did not talk about Liminality as a concept here...and I think I may have covered in a prior episode. Or I may have to cover that in a future episode, because it's a helpful concept to understand when you're in a period of what feels like intense change.

Hello All.
I'm returning for part 2 of this exploration of Dr. Devon Price' book Laziness Does not Exist. Please head back to episode 51 first if you haven't already heard that one, since I lay the ground
Feelings of laziness can be a powerful self-preservation instinct.
I talk about Tara McMullin's notions about how we think about working people, and her essay which explores people who don't work. This might include people who are unemployed, or struggle with a disability, or have some other limitation.
The three main tenets of the Laziness Lie (as characterized by Dr. Devon Price) include:
Often in Western culture we define people based on what they do, what their career happens to be. But given the changing nature of work, and the fact that people are less and less likely to spend their entire career doing the same job, or even being in the same field, this really doesn’t make sense anymore.
I reflect on my experiences with depression and how this can affect our ability to get things done. I also explain how this isn't typically a "constant" condition but has its ebbs and flows.
When someone is suffering from an acute episode of depression, from the outside they can look lazy. In reality, fighting depression is like a full time job in itself. When someone’s brain and body chemistry are out of sync, it takes enormous effort to accomplish basic tasks.
Dr. Price cites research that show that “when an employee divulges to their manager that they have depression, they’re more likely to be punished for taking sick days than other employees are. Their odds of being fired go way up too, even if their quality of work remains the same.”
The WHO indicates that depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. In 2018 people with Major Depressive Disorder made up 8% of unemployed US adults.
I remember one of the recurrent thoughts I had while depressed was that I wasn’t trying hard enough. If you are there, please know this is a false and erroneous thought that your mind may be feeding you. Getting support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
I explore the concept that the body sometimes says "no" when we truly do want to keep working, and how this is a protective mechanism, not a weakness. This happened for me when I suffered an appendicitis attack in 2017.
Our creativity benefits from a little laziness (aka loafing time) also. So many great inventions and brilliant ideas came forth not when people were working hard, but when they allowed themselves to daydream or take a little time off.
Seeing through the Laziness Lie means we can see it for what it is, question it, and push against it in subtle or sometimes not so subtle ways.
Accept that your body is perfect the way it is today. Yes, you have limits, and those limits can be honored. Your body doesn’t need to conform to a societal standard that makes no room for size diversity. Our associations with fatness and laziness are completely false, and conditioned.
That brings me to point two and probably the crux of the argument presented by Dr. Price, which is that compassion kills the laziness lie.
Lacking compassion for a struggling group actually makes it harder to be gentle with ourselves. To make this practical, notice when you’re tempted to judge someone as lazy, and ask yourself if there may be some hidden challenges.
Using curiosity rather than judgement is a helpful way to allow for a more expansive view of what situations may be eliciting this behavior.

Hello Listeners,
I start with an update on the audio book process. To receive the FREE Audio version of the Unleash, Unlearn, and Enliven book when it is published, please enter your name and email at this form.
Today I'm bringing you some initial thoughts after my second listen to Dr. Devon Price' book: Laziness Does Not Exist. I include some history on where the word "lazy" came from as well as a few of my own stories about work and laziness.
Lazy has always been a shame trigger for me, and now I'm starting to understand how culturally ingrained the idea is that hard work has moral value. While I often enjoy working hard on things like this podcast, and other creative projects, there are some kinds of work that I don't enjoy.
I used to shame myself for not liking this kind of work. But in understanding human nature, I now have so much more compassion for this. Sure, there are some life maintenance things most of us need to do. But when this comes from a place of caring about our health for example, instead of feeling like we "must" do something, it tends to go a lot better.
Since I did a lot of work on my audio book this week, I didn't have the bandwidth to complete this topic. Come back on April 23rd and you'll hear reflections on this, particularly related to mental health and ableism and how this ties into laziness.
Also, if you're interested in receiving a free Audible download of my book once I complete the audio, please leave me your email and name via this form, so I can send that to you when it is complete.
As always, thanks for listening! I appreciate you! If you have time to leave a rating or review on your favorite podcast player (especially Apple podcasts) that would be amazing! Thanks in advance for helping me grow this show.

Hello Lovely Listeners,
This conversation was especially rich to me, and I know you're going to want to hear more from Natalya Kolosowsky.
Natalya is a bilingual artist, coach, facilitator, and teacher of creative processes. She is the founder of Shadow Tender - an interdisciplinary project that teaches people how to dance with their demons. Natalya’s work is informed by 3+ decades of experience in dance, somatic modalities, and formal training in art, design, and psychology. Her work has been presented in universities, museums, and theaters around the world. Natalya also provides strategic branding and communication services for educators and creative entrepreneurs.
We speak about her experiences as an artist, dancer, and the parts of her background that brought her to where she is today.
She brought insight to my own embodied intuition about being "dismembered" internally in some of the ways I haven't been able to express all parts of my cultural identity. I also loved her perspective on what we can do in this world that can be so destabilizing and how spaces for creativity can be healing.

Here's a few updates on what's up lately. I am in the final stages of editing the audio version of my book, which will be released via Audible later in April.
Though I'd intended to release an episode on The Laziness Lie (a concept coined by Dr. Devon Price in the book Laziness Does Not Exist), this week I had a few too many things going on.
I like to live my own message and listen to my body's cues of when I've been at the computer for too long, and audio editing can take time!
So this episode has a preview of some of next week's interview with Natalya Kolosowsky (who you might recognize from the end credits of these show notes). I can't wait to share our conversation in episode 50. What a big milestone for this podcast!
I also touch on some of the work I've been doing on ableism, which is in preparation for a speech I'll be giving as part of my Speaker Academy and a topic I'd love to cover in more depth. My own path has taught me that people with ADHD and other neurodiversities can be amazing employees, as long as you make sure to support workstyles that may be outside the "typical" setup.
So far I haven't had people reaching out to be to address the topic of Wellbeing@Work! I had hoped from episode 36 with Izzy Iwen, we would have some interest in that. Please reach out via LinkedIn if you'd like to chat about being a guest on the podcast.
Also, I plan to give away 5-10 free copies of my audio book during launch month so that I can get some early reviews. If you are willing to listen and give me your feedback, please let me know so I can send you a complimentary copy.

Hello Lovely Listeners!
This is my first solo episode in a while. I hope you enjoyed my conversations with Kathy Oneto, Heather Ussery-Knight, Stephanie Lindloff, and Patrick Geary.
Today I want to give you a useful model for thinking about how to ride the waves of change that are inevitable with more grace and ease.
I mention the article I recently wrote for my Substack Newsletter on the What it Means to be Human in a world of Artificial Intelligence.
Using my "marital pivot" (definitely a spiritual pivot, if there ever was one) I explain Jenny Blake's Pivot model which includes:
1) Plant
2) Scan
3) Pilot
4) Launch
More about this idea can be found in Jenny's book, Pivot - The Only Move that Matters is Your Next One, and at her Pivot Method website here.
This is such a useful way to think about change. What people usually skip for forget is the process of planting ourselves where we are and taking stock of our strengths, values, and interests. We need to do this before reaching out to scan, so we can move with our own internal compass, which is our embodied wisdom, to a direction that's a fit for us.
As we pilot different options, we can think of these small experiments as windows into our next step, or possibly like horses at the Kentucky Derby. We gather data to see where we might want to go next.
This is a helpful reduction of risk stage before we go into an "all out" launch and take a bigger step.
What I love about this model is that it's cyclical and it's more of a mindset than just a set of activities we need to follow. Change is a constant, so Jenny helps us get better at it, developing this metaskill of pivot as a life skill.
I applied it to my relationship, because I was seeing all the parallels here. Maybe in a future episode I can unpack one of my (many) career pivots so you can see how it applies there as well. Better yet, read Jenny's book if you're interested in this topic.
Jenny Blake hosts the Pivot and Free Time podcasts, and she is a wise soul. Full disclosure that I'm a part of Jenny's BFF Circle Community. She's been an integral part of helping me develop a podcast through her offerings and mentorship through her community. If you are a small business owner, looking for a generous community of support, I highly recommend it.

I have my first returning guest, my friend Patrick Geary, an Astrologer, Coach, and Healer to talk with us about ways to work with Equinox Energy.
We start with a lovely equal breath meditation in honor of this season, and as a tool for times when we feel like we are "going to war" or pushing against something. We can introduce a pause into the process, and take a moment to realize how we can work together as spiritual warriors rather than operating from a scarcity mindset.
Collaboration has a multiplicative energy, and we used a gardening metaphor in how the spirit of cooperation can really accelerate what we are working toward.
We talk a bit about plants and how they can give us useful metaphors when thinking of the cycle of life, with less of a fear of death. When we appreciate the beauty of this natural cycle, it helps us have less fear of death, understanding our cosmic connection and our soul energy.
I come from a Mexican-American tradition so I reflect on my emerging spiritual beliefs. I found out that Patrick was born on November 1st, so we talked about how "day of the dead" can be a celebration of lives and spirits that continue to live on.
We talked about the mystery and surprises in the universe.
Patrick helped me understand how Aries energy gives us a sense of "firsts" or initiation energy. Every beginning is also and ending, so it makes sense to bring to conclusion what we are called to let go of, and what we want to bring in for the new year.
I love how Patrick describes the lunar cycle and how tracking it and follow it helps him understand the cyclical nature of our lives. "Peaceful nurturing of my own existence" was a phrase that resonated.
We explored the interlocking nature of a "lunar" type cycle, and how it can apply to different phases of the year together. Because we have a new moon on the equinox, there is a special creative and intuitive impulse at this time. We are laying the foundation for our desired experiences and we need to uncover what we want, assert it, and go for it.
There is a sense of liminality and we may not "see" the full "house" of the foundations we are laying this year, but it is important to unapologetically embrace what we want!
Hear hear!

I was delighted to have this conversation with one of my favorite coaches, Stephanie Lindloff. We worked together for a year and a half during the time I was writing my first book. I can tell you that, without Stephanie's compassionate and warm support, I would have been able to calm the "anxious perfectionist" within me to get that project started and completed.
Stephanie Lindloff is an Eco-Intuitive Coach and Teacher who helps anxious perfectionists reclaim your peace through nature. Her unique approach combines mystical practices, environmental science and thought management. Steph offers 1:1 and group coaching.
She’s also creator of the digital course “Reclaim Your Peace: Cultivating Self-Compassion Through Soulful Gardening.” In her first career, Steph was an internationally-recognized expert in river restoration. She lives in Northern Illinois with her husband, two kids and their very fluffy cat.
We cover how getting connected with our own natural wisdom helps anxious perfectionists to be able to get out of our heads and able to get grounded. This way we are able to watch our thoughts to see how they affect our emotions, and then our actions.
I love this notion of reclaiming who we are, at a soulful and spiritual level, by making tiny changes and micro-practices throughout our days. This is a source of peace and transformation.
We also talk about the relationship between neurodiversity and our connection to nature, and how we can see this as an asset and natural part of biodiversity.
I loved that Stephanie shared with me a guided inner journey to share with listeners as well, which can also be found in the bonus episode released on March 10, 2023.

Hello Somatic Wisdom listners,
I couldn't resist sharing this guided inner journey that is an excerpt from the interview with Stephanie Lindloff of Our Natural Wisdom for episode 46 (this coming Sunday).

I enjoyed this conversation with one of my friends, Heather Ussery-Knight, who is a coach with an extensive background in counseling and psychology.
Heather has Masters in Counseling Psychology, over 20 years in the field of counseling and psychology. She currently works as a coach focusing on Inner Parts Work. Because she is a MultiPod with a penchant for writing, creativity, Integral Theory, video gaming, Systema, crafts and other artistic endeavors, and learning, she uses all these interests towards her work.
You can find out more about Heather's coaching work at Lizard Dreaming, her coaching practice.
We talked through "inner parts" work and inner critics, which she developed in parallel to the development of Internal Family Systems Therapy. It really has come about as an understanding through other therapeutic practices as well.
The notion that some of our parts as being non-humanoid is also a really creative approach to our inner "cast of characters." We sometimes have a "truculent teenager" part or other places where they take over our bodies energetically.
There are many ways we can unburden our parts through the kinds of work that Heather provides in some very creative ways. We talked about parts that get us in trouble. For me, this is my "Peter Pan" part and for her she mentioned a "caveman" part that might come out when she hasn't been taking care of herself.
She mentioned that most of our parts are "younglings" and they serve(d) a purpose in our lives. Awareness is the key part of this process.
We talked about her journey through a Russian combat martial art called Systema and how that has helped her, and deepened her somatic wisdom. Systema helps her understand pain and the way stories increase our pain.
Inner Critics have a function. As Heather explained, there are many ways they try to serve us, but they may be misguided. Expending energy can seem "dangerous" to our system, and inner critics are quite clever. I love her ways to engage with the critic and helping us work through this when it is holding us back.
Embodying our full energy and surrendering to the process helps us get out of our own way.
Heather is a gamer and she talked about ways we can engage in a somatically healthy way while gaming. We talked about how the psychology world and the gaming world have some very interesting intersections.
We explore the synchronicity of the 100th monkey and Carl Jung's work on the collective unconscious.
You can find out more about Heather's coaching work at Lizard Dreaming, her coaching practice.
Hello my lovely listeners!
Thanks for taking me to 3000 downloads of this podcast as of the time of the recording! Wow! Each month the listenership has grown, especially since January, and I really appreciate your time.
If you're on Apple Podcasts and you enjoy these episodes, can you help me out by writing a short review and "breaking the seal" on reviews? Just a sentence on what you like would be amazing. Or if you're short on time, leaving a 5 star review makes sure that I can continue to offer guests and content that you enjoy. Thank you so much in advance for this grateful gesture. It is truly appreciated!
This episode is a brief introduction to Internal Family Systems Therapy, a methodology originally developed by Richard Schwartz, PhD. I've also explored Somatic IFS with Susan McConnell, and I definitely recommend her work, along with the book No Bad Parts (by Schwarz)
This is partly to set the context for the conversation I will release in episode 45 with my friend Heather Ussery-Knight of Lizard Dreaming, a coaching practice that helps with inner critics.
I use myself as an example and give you a window into three of my parts: the comfort-loving Calvin, the dictator, and the "big sis" part. A shorter version of this essay can be found at my newsletter on Substack.
At the end of the episode I ask a few questions that you can consider if this topic feels relatable to you:
Do you ever get the sense that there are neglected parts inside you?
What did they look like?
How did their voices sound?
Do they remind you of anyone familiar?
Do they ever fight with each other or you and sabotage your efforts?
And if you are thinking there might be "exiled" parts within you that don't want themselves to be known, we will likely cover that in episode 46. I am also including a link to a directory of IFS Trained therapists here in case you need further support.
This podcast is intended for general advice and does not substitute for proper medical or psychological counseling. If you feel you are in a situation that requires individualized support, I encourage you to seek counseling with a therapist or licensed provider.
Cristy is not a therapist. She studies psychology and neuroscience for the benefit of herself and her coaching clients.

Hello Friends,
I'm changing it up this episode with a interview that originally aired on Wade Brill's Centered in the City podcast (original title: Episode 110: Living in Our Bodies with Cristy De La Cruz) back on June 23, 2022.
You'll learn a little more about when I am most "uncentered," along with more of my story. Wade got me to dig a little deeper into what my somatic practices are all about, and what personally led me to that path. I have learned more about podcasting in that time, especially about creating better audio with less extraneous sound! ;-)
Wade was kind enough to share her audio file with me to free up my content creation time for this week. Jenny Blake, here's looking at you and your Free Time principles! This might fall under "embrace imperfections" or possibly "save someone next steps." ;-)
Wade Brill is a coach, speaker, meditation teacher and podcaster. She created Centered in the City, a virtual, on-demand, self-care, and mindfulness platform with over 200 different meditations, journaling prompts, nourishing recipes, and pilates flows all designed to support you feeling calm, focused and and energized as you live your life in this modern day world. If you're interested, she offers a 7-day free trial to see if it's right for you.
HUGE thanks to Wade Brill for allowing me to share an edited version of this podcast for my listeners. <3

I loved this conversation with fellow coach and podcaster, Kathy Oneto of Sustainable Ambition.
Kathy Oneto is an executive and life-work coach who is passionate about helping people succeed on their terms both at work and in life. She is the founder of Sustainable Ambition and host of The Sustainable Ambition Podcast. Her mission is to help people attain more joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment in their careers from decade to decade, helping them to be ambitious with more ease and without burnout.
Kathy and I talk about how we see ambition, how our lives have an ebb and flow from decade to decade, and how to better plan how we sustain ourselves as we stretch, strive, and grow.
We are both curious souls and I think you'll be able to relate to her story. As an endurance athlete for many years, she has much somatic wisdom to share, and great perspective on how to look at our life and career adventures.
I also appreciate her notion of adult stages of development, and the very real process to unpack what are our true ambitions, and which ones come from that early sense of being socialized to want certain things.
We tackle the notion of planning not only for the things we want to achieve, but the activities that will keep us resilient along the way. Planning can be loosely held, and with flexibility to help us know that we need to follow our energy cycles. Being too rigid can just set us up for failure, so flexing when necessary is important.
We both love the notion of following our curiosities instead of one big passion. Sometimes it take a little more turning inward to hear those quieter voices that are truly pointing us toward our next steps.
Kathy is working on a book project, and we got to geek out about writing process, and that's always fun.
I highly recommend Kathy's book of prompts, My Little Book of Curiosity. I personally love the hardcover version becasue it's easier to write in but she also has paperback versions available.
If you looking for a different approach to planning, check out the Sustainable Ambition planner, which is available in three distinctly different colors, which is also cool.
Kathy can be found at her website and on LinkedIn to stay in touch.

Hello, my lovely listeners.
As I worked through some insomnia and some feelings of urgency in the past week, I wanted to address an issue that some of us with busy brains struggle with regarding rest.
Some of us have "Ferrari brains with bicycle brakes" like Dr. Ned Hallowell would say. It's actually not very easy to slow ourselves down to get proper rest. Unless we literally hit a wall and burn ourselves out, that is. Then we are forced to rest until our brain recovers.
But this episode tackles the very real need we have for "active rest" in the form of exercise. This is such helpful treatment for those of us who have overactive minds and perhaps who need to remind ourselves to step away once in a while.
When I'm getting my walk breaks regularly, I find that I sleep better. This week as subzero temperatures made it harder for me to get out, I had trouble releasing all that energy.
The benefits of exercise cannot be overstated. And this can take whatever form moves you, whether it is walking, running, swimming, dancing, or doing yoga. Allow the "brain rest" that only moving your body can give you.
You might even find that this kind of "active rest" helps you get better, deeper sleep at night. The BDNF that is generated from vigorous exercise gives us all kinds of happy chemicals for our brain (like dopamine). And if we meet a friend for a walk, we are also getting an oxytocin boost, which can be restful and can help us feel connected.
I also address the notion of being able to "rest down" into our seat when we have brain work to do and to stop that busy mind from taking us off track as we try to get something done. I share my "memo book" trick where I can dump any impulse thoughts out so they don't derail my work session.
And I give myself tons of self-compassion for the times my busy brain just doesn't wind down. All of culture conspires for us NOT to rest. It's not our fault that we are like this, and we probably got a lot of accolades for NOT resting.

I have been so inspired by the work of Tricia Hersey, creator of the Nap Ministry and author of Rest is Resistance, A Manifesto. She has helped me understand and see through some of the false beliefs we had been taught in this "grind culture" we live in.
This episode is an introduction to some of the ideas she covers and encouragement to explore her work if you need more rest in your life, and are interested in creating space where ALL can have access to rest.
Our inherent worth is not dependent on our productivity. Rest is a birthright, not a privilege or a luxury.
The Four Tenets of the Nap Ministry are written here:
These fundamentals have been shaped by Hersey's scholarship and study of Black liberation theology, womanism, somatics, and cultural trauma.
The other big "aha" I'm taking away is that community care is fundamental, and self care (conceptually) is more of a product of an individualistic culture that doesn't recognize our connection with other living beings.
I love how Hersey focuses on the dreaming, daydreaming, and imagination that springs from adequate rest. This is the real reason for rest, not just so we can "come back" and be productive. To invent a world where there is justice for all, and we have for freedom and ease, we must make time to imagine and daydream.
"Rest is a meticulous love practice."
If you are intersted in listening to the talk on Rest as a Portal of Healing that first drew me to Hersey from the Minneapolis Institute of Art it is linked here.
Rest is Resistance is available anywhere books are sold, and I especially love the audio book in her own powerful voice.
Another podcast favorite of mine (We Can Do Hard Things) also hosted a conversation with her back in October 2022 and it did a lovely job of sharing her work in a nuanced way.

I loved this conversation with my new friend and colleague Patrick Geary, a coach and astrology who has given me such insight through a reading he did for me back in November.
We cover experiences with somatic wisdom in terms of burnout and bodily cycles and Patrick shares his more of his back story.
For those who are beginning with the notion of the planetary bodies influencing us, you might start with the moon cycle. Patrick walks us through the different phases, and I comment on how I've been working with that for the last couple of years as I've entered menopause. Syncing my schedule with my natural energetic cycles really helps me work with my energy instead of against it.
We also go over how to understand the main three parts of our astrology chart including the sun, moon, and ascendant. I am still learning how these work, but so much made sense when Patrick explained them to me during our 1:1 reading.
I was also curious about how the "house" system works, and maybe we will need to do a future podcast on that, because it is also fascinating how cyclically that is manifested.
My favorite quote in this conversation from Patrick is here:
"We cannot always be living at peak performance.
That doesn't make sense and, our culture really doesn't respect the dark moon and it doesn't respect that time to draw in. "
To learn more about Patrick, feel free to check out his website for more gems. I'm also loving his newsletter, which has given me insight in the past few months about how cosmic events may be impacting my energetic cycles. You can easily subscribe to that on Substack.

Happy 2023, Somatic Wisdom listeners!
After allowing myself some generous time off after the holidays for rest and reflection I am back again and looking forward to the next season of Somatic Wisdom.
This is a reflection on the past year, along with some review of the five interviews I did and some of the lessons I most enjoyed. If you haven't heard them yet, I think you'll enjoy the content.
EP24 - Dr. Ashley White, MD, on Responsive Eating
EP27 - Beth Giles, My NIA Teacher on Joyful Movement
EP31 - Val Martin on Bodyfulness, Therapy, Cat Yoga, and Vegan LIving
EP34 - Viki Stith, Therapist on Managing Anxiety and IBS
EP36 - Izzy Iwen on Being Well at Work in the post/interim-COVID world
For 2023 I am inviting Patrick Geary, an Astrologer and Coach for my first interview. He did a wonderful 2-hour birth chart reading for me and I've already listened to it about 6 times, it was so chockful of wisdom.
Kathy Oneto of the Sustainable Ambition podcast will be joining me. She has some great resources on her site, especially if you're planning a more sustainable and/or more ambitious year ahead. Here's a link to my favorite book of prompts that are a great way to clarity where you want to go next.
Michelle Perdue is an actor and speaker, and has written the book: Rise and Shine. She's a member of my NSA-Minnesota cohort, and I am excited to learn more about her.
I'm also hoping Stephanie Lindloff of Our Natural Wisdom will agree to speak with me in February or March. She's the coach I worked with during the process of writing my book, and I really loved her course on Soulful Gardening last year.
Happy 2023!

Hello listeners.
Izzy was one of the first answering my "call" when I asked for leaders who are seeing different ways of being well at work.
I really enjoyed her perspective, since she's in the I.T. recruiting space, and also has a passion for wellbeing.
We cover topics like the growth mindset, and the notion of work-life flow. We talk about how COVID-19 working at home opened people's eyes to how hard they want to work and the benefits of a hybrid workplace. We also cover how onboarding and how newer staff members can sometimes feel less connected if they don't have an in person place to learn from other employees.
We talk about Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and other resources that companies like hers are providing to employees.
Toward the end of the interview, she turns the interview tables and asks me how self-employment has influenced my wellbeing. We speak about full time versus part-time opportunities with an eye to what future employers may have to do, given the tight labor market.
Overall, I think you'll gather some optimism about the job market and about how employers are changing their norms to respond to increased calls for a focus on wellbeing by the employees themselves.
To get in touch or connect with Izzy, here's her Linked In profile.
As a recruiter she hangs out quite a lot on Linked In!

This episode is about releasing what no longer serves us. I talk about something I did with my old journals, and I explain how having a physical ritual can be so cleansing.
What cleansing rituals can you use as you look back through the year and consider what you want to leave behind, versus what you want to carry forward?

I am excited to bring you this conversation with my new friend, therapist and Zen practitioner Victoria (Viki) Stith.
Viki and I cover topics around anxiety, body-based wisdom, the courage to take risks, and the refusal to harbor thought.
We talk about her journey to this work, and some adventures she's had along the way, like the 7-month stint living in France, fulfilling a lifelong dream. We are both "scanners," people with a lot of interests, and I'm always interested to hear about people's career paths, especially when they make large pivots.
I really appreciated Viki's approach to incorporating mindfulness, meditation, and cognitive and behavioral therapy to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and anxiety treatment, along with her open-hearted approach to her clients.

Let's dive into how to improve your stability, and strength. I’m going to help you break down more of this functional education work from soma yoga methodology to give you a place to start. And while you may apply these to movements in your body, you can apply them to your emotional wellbeing as well. This is where the magic often happens for me.
The main principles of this work are:
I personally am going to focus on building strength, at least for the next 90 days or so, to gain some traction.
To do this, I am going to use a plank pose because this builds core strength and that is fundamental to our overall physical and emotional health.
The episode covers the wall plank and then works up to other forms of the plank that can be done depending on our overall strength and individual needs.

This episode will air on Thanksgiving Day. It's a perfect time to thank you so much for listening! I'm grateful for you and for your interest in this material.
Today we cover aspects of our body which can translate into aspects of our being, as I let you in on a recent discovery I had while in a 3-day intensive yoga training.
We use an infinity symbol with three different aspects I ask you to imagine: on the left is MOBILITY. On the right is STABILITY. Right in the middle where they cross is STABILITY.
As I was practicing and learning more about therapeutic approaches to classic asana, my body was hit with the realization that I had been so busy working on my mobility that I was completely neglecting the strength side of the equation. Thus, there is a lack of stability in what I'm doing now because I haven't spent much time on strengthening myself, which ultimately leads to greater resilience in my being.
The body can serve as a metaphor often for what we are doing in our lives, and this one really made the lightbulb go on. I've been running away from challenges that might bring me face to face with rejection, because I wanted to hang out in my safe zone (which is mobility for me, and my busy mind).
I use the metaphor of distance running and my experience with that to demonstrate the slow process of working up to more and more challenging goals (and we all have personal preferences about what is meaningful to us). As a long distance runner, I started with 5ks, then upleveled to 5-milers, 10ks, and 10-milers. I didn't start off wanting to run a half marathon or even a marathon. I have completed one marathon and over 20 half-marathons. It really didn't seem that hard after a while.
At the end of the episode, I ask the following questions for you to consider in your own life. Maybe you think about these on a walk, or maybe you take the time to journal them out:
Next episode will address some different approaches to these issues, and some thoughts about I like to approach the different aspects.

I'm bringing you a conversation with Valerie K. Martin, someone who has inspired me with her work.
Valerie has a passion for working with trauma survivors and folks who are seeking a deeper relationship with self, community, and the earth. She also works with couples, and is currently engaged in training to become a certified sex therapist. In addition to founding the Gaia Center for Embodied Healing, Valerie teaches yoga in Nashville, and hosts 2 podcasts: Bodyful and Creatures of Change, and facilitates workshops rooted in the Work That Reconnects. She is a Ravenclaw, Enneagram 7, activist for human and animal liberation, and literal tree hugger.
We explore topics like life paths, therapy training, the enneagram, yoga culture, creative entrepreneurship, and vegan living. Val has so many common interests, and we just explored the tip of the iceberg here. Check out her podcasts for more great content and conversations.

I reflect on being relieved that political season has come to an end (mostly).
Then I dive into the benefits of community and how I was reminded how important this is, especially as I had the privlege of talking with Moira Maybin and Valerie Martin.
Community and connection are valuable to our wellbeing, even if we are introverts. We are wired for connection and we need to reach out when we are lonely. I talk about one response to stress as the "tend and befriend" impulse, rather than the usual ones: flee, fight, or freeze.
Interoception is how we detect our internal signals in the body, and this is how we can tell if we are hungry, thirsty, lonely, etc. But many of us have not been taught to pay attention to these signals and we have a limited emotional vocabulary. Wanting can be mixed up with physical hunger, a need for dopamine or oxytocin. We may desire connection rather than food at times.
Conversations help us realize we are not alone. This "humaning" is difficult, so connections are important. Collaborating with others can save us and impact the lives of others also. Maybe we need to start organizing for a 30 hour standard work week. Or maybe older adults still want to work, but not full time.
At the risk of going on a rant, I explain that healthy relationships are the cornerstones of a well-lived life.

This episode is on the energetic cycles we experience in a day. I recorded in the evening, at a time I'm much less focused. I want to keep it real in letting you peak behind the curtain in terms of a less energetic time for me.
My focus med has worn off, and even reading a script and sticking to the plan feels harder. A recent medicine shortage put me into a bit of a tailspin. Thankfully, I didn't have to use caffeine as a substitute for too long, since that's hard on my adrenal system.
We all have energetic cycles that fluctuate throughout a day, week, month, or a year. It helps when we are able to honor those cycles, and to complete our work at times where we are at our peak focus, rather than to push through when our bodies are asking for something different.
I'm grateful that in my medical device days, I had access to an onsite gym so that for about 2/3 of my days, I could escape for a workout, then bring lunch back to my desk. Maybe that's why I was able to stay in that job for 11+ years.
I have skepticism about the traditional workday and I am reflecting on both my own patterns of energy and also proposing the idea that it might be possible to work a shorter work week and still get the important things done.
I keep asking questions, like, in what ways might we design better workflows for people that don't require so much time in front of a computer?
Is it possible to work a shorter work week 24 to 30 hours and still get all the important things done?
What kinds of mindset shifts and policy shifts might it take for us to standardize a shorter week so that we have more leisure time?
Wherever you are in your work or energetic cycles, I hope you are able to align in a way that honors your somatic wisdom.

This episode covers a disruption to my current work situation due to a staffing shortage at my husband's organization, and a rant about the Supreme Court's political disruption to women's rights where I am asking for your support.
While the personal situation is not the biggest disruption we have endured in the past few years, it did make me angry. I didn't like the policy or the process of my husband having to return to a night shift again, since I thought he had enough seniority to avoid it.
Since I want my husband to get more quality sleep, I am on the hunt for the right co-working situation or office outside of home. If you're in the Twin Cities, and there's a space you love, let me know!
It reminded me of the big COVID disruption, and I think that's why I reacted the way I did, and railed against reality for a while before getting creative and considering the alternatives. In case you think yoga teachers are always "zen" about situations that come up, this story will show that's not true.
In the last few minutes of this episode, I explore the disruption to women's rights that is taking place this year on a national level. While this veers into political territory, and I know I've made an effort to avoid that so far in this podcast, I feel called to speak up on my position here.
Please vote pro-choice in the next election. Women and their bodily sovereignty are on the ballot in many states and in local elections. We need you to stand with us to support this fundamental right to privacy and liberty.
And just in case you are not comfortable having this discussion, maybe share this episode with a friend or trusted person, to make sure they know this is important to you also. Thank you, dear listeners, this means the world to me.

My NIA teacher Beth Giles was kind enough to have a conversation with me about her practice, her teaching and what NIA means to her.
We shared our joyful experiences with this practice, which includes several dance forms, movements from martial arts, and from yoga. With its upbeat music and world rhythms, NIA is an accessible practice for many bodies. I even find that sometimes, when my body calls for more energizing rather than calming, NIA can be a great alternative to my yoga practice, and it draws from many somatic wisdom traditions, as Beth covers in this episode.
During the pandemic, Beth's online NIA offerings provided a reliable community that helped save my sanity when I needed ways to support my mental and physical health. Plus it's such so darn fun! And the benefit of practicing online is that, if you've ever felt self-conscious about dancing, you can have screen on or off depending on your comfort level.

In this episode I include a short somatics practice to release tension and then a short "bodyful" meditation for when you need a practice to ground and settle yourself and to tune into your internal wisdom.
We move through the arch & flatten, a basic somatic tension release, along with some shoulder releases to allow our bodies to be comfortable to settle into a brief meditation.
Use this as a practice that you can come back to when the winds of change are howling or when you need to settle in to make a transition into your next activity.

This short bonus episode is a grounding practice for whenever you need calming and centering before any next action step where you may be feeling a little tense or anxious.
The goal of the practice is to settle your nervous system so you can better access your inner wisdom. This can be used at any time, and I use it (or a similar guided practices) before my clients begin their coaching sessions.

I begin the episode by reflecting on what I learned from Dr. Ashley White on Responsive Eating and how I've named my hunger an "inner Calvin" after one of my cats, who is very food-motivated.
The rest of the episode focuses on a few different ways to practice of meditation, especially if you have a restless mind or body. For some of us being seated without moving on a cushion feels more torturous.
Breath awareness can be a great point of focus since it allows our mind to have a "place to settle."
Yoga practice can be a way to physically prepare for the stillness of meditation, or savasana, the "yoga nap" at the end of most classes.
Sometimes a mantra can help us with focusing during a meditation. My favorite is: I am here in my body, I am home. And I can repeat this many times when my mind runs off.
I mention the work of Bodyfulness by Christine Caldwell and quote from her book, which is linked here. I'm becoming allergic to the term mindfulness, because the mind can be a good master, but a terrible servant.
I also speak about the ultradian cycles that typically last 80-120 minutes for most people, and how this can affect our focus throughout the day.
Doing a slow, somatic practice, can be a meditation in itself, since meditation is about noticing and awareness. Conscious movement can allow us to release tension and then can use somatic practices to release tension before we sit for a meditation.
Becoming present can occur during a walk in nature, and this can be a more active form of meditation. Or you can journal your thoughts (a form of meditation I love) so that you can release the "thought loops" that are on constant repeat in your brain.
In the future, I will record a set of different lengths of guided awareness practice with somatics and without so you can have a resource on the go to help you settle in.
My dance teacher, Beth Giles, will be speaking to me in a future episode and I'm linking her website here. Happy birthday, dear Beth!

I know you will love this conversation with Dr. Ashley White, MD, creator of the Responsive Eating™ methodology.
Ashley White is a leader in challenging diet dogma. Her work with Responsive Eating ™ encourages a critical shift in how we eat and understand our appetites.
As a trusted coach, doctor, educator, and parent, Dr. Ashley White’s mission is to use her signature methodology of Responsive Eating™ to facilitate appetite literacy so that people in larger bodies can unlearn, push back against, and liberate themselves from diet culture.
She is a certified life and wellness coach, and has specialties in family, emergency and obesity medicine. Her Appetite Coaching practice enables clients to leverage Appetite Literacy to transform their lives.
In this episode we discuss how Dr. Ashley came up with this methodology, and her deepened understanding of how our brains respond to food and wanting to help us make decisions aligned with our values.
We discuss "eating into wanting" and how we make decisions about what we want to eat and how we start and stop these cycles, and the discomfort of stopping. Using curiosity about these cycles, and not attaching meaning to our wanting, or labeling ourselves as bad for wanting. Understanding the brain science helps us let go of our judgment around wanting.
Food brings us a lot of pleasure because of our brain chemistry. And we can invite our discerning brain into the decisions that we make, using a "zoom out" of our life to help us see where we may be eating into wanting.
The POP methodology is Pause, Observe, Proceed. It involves a brief pause using the breath, activating the decision-making part of our brain. Our appetite can then receive feedback from our noticing brain. We can bring our attention to the eating experience, notice what we are eating, and our feelings about it. Then we can decide how we want to proceed.
We cover how the environment can influence our eating, and we have permission to do what we want to do, once we allow a space to decide.
Dr. Ashley described her process of creating an avatar for her hunger by giving it a character name, Olaf. This allows her to have a conversation with her hunger rather than identifying with it. Our appetites are just getting their needs met, and often our habitual behaviors are just below our awareness.
We discuss the adaptation of the brain that makes our body more sensitive to weight loss than to weight gain. This helps us understand why weight tends to be progressive, as we get stuck in pattern loops. All of our hormones play a role here.
Dr. Ashley discusses the concept of life weight, best weight, and ideal weight. Being heavier does not mean we are unhealthy, and throughtout our lives, we often have different weights throughout our life span. Appetite is dynamic, and at times, there is some variation to what we can easily maintain depending on our hormonal balance in various life stages.
Weight gain doesn't necessarily mean our life is falling apart. For people in larger bodies, getting to an "ideal weight" as defined by BMI may not be sustainable.
Environmental and lifestyle design is one of the concepts she helps her clients understand, so we are invited to plan ahead so we can eat nourishing food that keeps us focused and awake. We are balancing priorities and making sure we develop habits that support eating responsively without tons of effort or willpower.
Using a somatic wisdom lens, we are encouraged not to track meals but to get feedback on the somatic cues of energy, mobility and comfort after the meals to help us decide what we want to eat. She uses a "body experience log" to help identify what foods support our health and values.
Sleep can influence our appetite, and since Dr. Ashley has a 1-month old at home, she also notices her change in appetite.

Many thanks to Jenny Blake and her BFF community for introducing us.
This episode explores my story as far as the food and body image struggles I developed in my early teens and that am still journeying to understand.
Since I'll be hosting my first guest (Dr. Ashley White, creator of Responsive Eating) in episode 24, I wanted to explore this topic that feels a little vulnerable to me, but is also something that I believe clients and listeners can benefit from hearing.
Please be advised if you have struggled with eating disorders that this may trigger some recognition for you. I end the podcast with self-compassion and self-acceptance as the first steps to healing our food and body stories. I encourage you to seek advice from a trained professional if you are experiencing stress in this area.
More about Doctor Ashley White's Responsive Eating Program can be found at this link.
And if you're interested in my book, Unleash, Unlearn, and Enliven, it can be found at Amazon, Bookshop.org, and other online retailers, or in pdf format on my webpage.
Thanks for listening! Be well.
Do you engage in procrasti-learning?
I define this as inputting new knowledge to delay taking action or practicing a new skill.
It can feel vulnerable to do the hard things, so it is natural for us to consume rather than to create.
But this won't help us reach our goal. So I offer six strategies to interrupt this habit if it's one you share with me:
In summary: my favorite ways to to avoid being taken over by procrasti-learning are:

Today’s episode is a reinforcement of the ideas of somatic practice, and building upon those with wisdom from a prominent spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle.
I recently reviewed some material from Tolle’s A New Earth book. If you are interested in the flowering and deepening of human consciousness, you may want to check out the 10-part series that opens his podcast Eckhart Tolle: Essential Teachings.
The inner body awareness that Tolle describes is parallel to the practice of somatics.
I give a little background on the experience of meditation and my own struggles with it, but why it can be so beneficial. Fundamentally, meditation and being present are about knowing ourselves deeply, and coming to see how we are a part of the divine.
Our cultural and societal conditioning often treats us as though we are machines. But we are not machines, we are biological creatures with energetic cycles.
This episode’s central message is that you have deep wisdom embodied within you.
I refer to the work of Martha Beck, who has two quirky and humorous podcasts you might enjoy, The Gathering Pod, and Bewildered.
This podcast is brought to you by my book Unleash, Unlearn, and Enliven: Seven Micro-practices to Engage Your Somatic Wisdom.
I am celebrating the fact that my book was selected by the curators of the Indie Author project, and it is now available as a part of Indie Minnesota's Biblioboard mobile and web platform. This makes it available for free to Minnesota library patrons!

This is the final episode of my three part series on the Somatics of Confidence.
Putting together what we learned in episodes 18 and 19, this episode concludes with a few postures that can help you physically build your confidence, and a practice I love to help get me pumped up for a big event.

A somatics practitioner would likely say that our body influences our mind, and our mind influences our body, and it is an ever-present feedback loop rather than a hierarchical one.
Use your own judgment: see if these simple movements work for you. It’s unlikely they will do any damage, and you may find yourself raising your hand for the next promotion more frequently once you start practicing.
I’ll be presenting a longer (~40-50 minute) session of the Somatics of Confidence for the White Box Club (an online MeetUp Group for people in career transition) on September 27th.

How is your confidence? Do you need a little more ease in your body when you face an important challenge?
Please listen to episodes 17 & 18 to learn more about the foundations for this practice. Then learn about how the sympathetic and parasympathetic sides of our nervous system regulate our bodies. We will practice some shoulder releases and some side body releases to help relax us and to get a full and complete breath.

I come back to a practice I covered in Episode 3 of this podcast, breath awareness. This moves us from our over-thinking brain back into our body.
Then I walk us through a seated twist position that serves as a Vagal Nerve stimulation and do three repeats on each side. We come back to the breath awareness to check in again to sense if there are any changes.
This short practice can be done 1-3 repetitions on each side before we are going to do something where we need more confidence, and some calming for the nervous system.

This is an introduction to the practice of Somatics, which was originated by Thomas Hanna and has been a part of many different practice traditions.
In Greek, the term “soma” refers to “the living body in its wholeness.” This living, breathing, self-sensing, self-aware, and self-moving perception from inside out differs from the concept of body.
Somatics draws from the traditions of Feldenkrais, Alexander technique, and practices observed by Elsa Gindler.
For more details on this work, please refer to Thomas Hanna’s books The Body of Life: Creating New Pathways for Sensory Awareness and Fluid Movement and his classic Somatics: Reawakening The Mind’s Control of Movement, Flexibility and Health.
Rather than “mind over matter” our new understanding is “sensory over motor.”
I describe reflex patterns that become habituated in our bodies: red light reflex, green light reflex, and trauma reflex.
Then I explain how this interconnection of our bodies and minds as inextricably linked feedback loops means that we can work with our bodies to release stuck emotions and patterns.
Another reference I mentioned in this episode is The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk.

We conclude this mini-series on habit change with some work from Cheri Huber, who wrote Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline.
When we get quiet and we listen to the dialogues within our heads, we will hear a lot of “feedback” from those voices about trying to make a change. These are known as sub personalities, and at least one of them is typically a critic.
I give examples in my own life of sub personalities and how we can approach them.
It is important to dis-identify with these smaller parts of us and use our internal Embodied Self Energy, the “watcher” or the “capital S” Self to mentor the parts.
We can detach from Egocentric Karmic Conditioning and come back to center. This is one reason why journaling and meditation can be so helpful, to release what is going on within us.
We have amazing capacity for growth and neuroplasticity, and we can shape our behavior in profound ways over time.
Listen and acknowledge those voices but don’t let them run you. Your Soul or Embodied Self Energy always wants your well being and is compassionate and wise. You always have a choice when you remain present, and even habits that are relatively unconscious at this time, can be shaped in new directions.
If you want to get in touch to let me know how these episode are landing for you, please use my contact page.
If you struggle with any of these habits, I have a limited number of free calls available. Sign up here to schedule your introductory call today.
In part 5 of my mini-series on habit change we talk about a few concrete examples of how to implement one habit change at a time.
This is about how it takes 30-300 repetitions (typically) to form a strong habit, though it depends on how much skill is required. Give yourself permission to work on just one habit for the next 2-3 months.
I use the habit of journaling or thought downloads in detail so we have an example to work with.
Once you get that habit firmly established, you can tackle a new one. As you keep layering on habits, you will form the “meta-skill” of habit development.
I talk about unconscious habits we may have, such as negative self-talk or other things that may not seem so obvious. Habits always develop for a reason, and for ones that came about when we were quite young, it can take longer to unwind.
If you have a very ambitious habit, like stopping overeating, maybe you want to start with some habits of awareness first. I use the example of food journaling as a way to develop a habit of awareness that might lead to understanding yourself better. Even if our tracking is not perfect, and maybe we can only do it 2/3 of the time, we are still gathering data that can help.
Then we can take on the additional layers that might help us understand the triggers to our overeating, and figure out different ways to handling those times.
I address a few common questions people have about habits and set us up with a question about how we deal with our inner critic when it comes to habit change, for those of us who have failed at habit change before.

In part 4 of my mini-series on habit change we cover how our identities play a role in our habits, and how we may need to adopt or reframe identities to reach our potential.
Then I review the parts of James Clear's 4 laws covered in Atomic Habits:
Make it Obvious, Make it Easy, Make it Attractive, and Make it Satisfying.
I extend this into how to consider the habits we may want to stop or change, and the inverse of these laws:
Make it Invisible, Make it Unattractive, Make it Difficult, and Make it Unsatisfying
I give an example of how to apply each of these laws in your life. I explain how, even though going through the process of thinking through and applying these elements may seem difficult, it is worth it for our long-term benefit.
If you struggle with any of these habits, I have a limited number of free calls available in August (3 as of this posting). Sign up here to schedule your call today.

In this episode I continue the exploration of habits by asking your "Four Tendencies" type.
I use my running habit and the different ways my husband and I were able to stick to the habit to illustrate a Questioner and an Obliger approach.
Then we dive into one of the most helpful books I've read thus far about habits, by James Clear, called Atomic Habits: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results.
His overall point is that these tiny changes we make automatic over time can have an amazing impact over time.
His model is a modification of Duhigg's model and has 4 parts:
Cue -> Craving -> Response -> Rewards
I also appreciate the fact that IDENTITY is a key part of maintaining our new habits. When I adopted the habit of an author and a finisher, I was able to complete my first book.
The 4 laws for creating a good habit, as described by James Clear
Cue: Make It Obvious
Craving: Make It Attractive
Rewards: Make It Satisfying
Response: Make It Ease
Habits are a way to solve problems in our lives and make things efficient. If we learn that our habits are no longer serving us, then we may want to change them.

I still have 3 spots left for the 45-minute coaching call in August if you are struggling with your own habit change or want support on any other issue that’s a struggle for you, see my scheduling link here.
In this episode, we explore the parts of a habit: cue, routine, and rewards (based on the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg). We consider the fact that reprogramming a habit is easier than eradicating one, based on research.
We also explore Four Tendencies as described by Gretchen Rubin. These are the Upholder, the Questioner, the Obliger, and the Rebel. By better understanding our tendencies we can design the kind of support we may need when we want to begin a new habit that better supports us.
Which of these tendencies fits your personality? Here’s the free quiz from Gretchen Rubin if you want to explore further. I am not affiliated with her in any way, but I think her framing of this issue is powerful.
To get in contact, please send me a note on my contact page.
The regular actions that we take have more impact than the things we do only once in a while.
Consider the habits that serve you well in your life, and those that don’t serve you as well. This is an introduction to habit change and a doorway to contemplating what changes you’d like to make.

I discuss why it’s important to fuel ourselves with small acknowledgements and celebrations along the way, especially if we have big goals and dreams that required small and steady daily or weekly actions. I share a personal example related to my book writing journey that helped me get to the goal.
What big, hairy, audacious goal have YOU been putting off because you may be telling yourself a story about not being ready to succeed?

This episode is about the seventh and final micro-practice I describe in my book Unleash, Unlearn, and Enliven. This is about dancing and being in motion, moving things through our bodies. Dance is a joyful way to do this. It is also a wonderful metaphor for finding the rhythms we need to sustain us in our lives.
Where can you find better rhythm in a way that honors your body’s need for rest and play? I’d love to hear more if you want to get in touch here.

I wanted to check in with you to see how the micro-practices are going for you. Rather than rush into the next set of practices, I want to introduce the notion of self-compassion.
I also share a story on my own challenges with putting personal development into practice to illustrate why this can be hard, based on our social and familial conditioning.
I'd love to hear how things are going for you and what's coming up as you are listening and practicing. Any challenges? I'd love to know - please get in touch here if you're willing to share.
Special thanks to Josue Castillo, Jenny Blake, and Wade Brill for your encouragement of me toward this project. I appreciate you!
This episode is about the third micro-practice I describe in my book Unleash, Unlearn, and Enliven. It’s all about somatic awareness. This episode will guide you through a short somatic awareness exercise so you can sense into the parts of your body. Take it gently and don’t worry if you don’t feel too much right away. This takes practice and is very individual.
