From time to time, there are events that can change the course of history in a small community. This is especially true in Marilla 100 years ago on July 17, 1923. The local Rotary Club has asked village officials in East Aurora for permission to install a new welcome sign. Rotary President Ted Borowiak requested that the village turn over a sign in its possession so that the Rotary can install it on Route 16 near Willardshire Road, replacing an older sign that is still on display. A proposed social media policy in the Town of Aurora will need more hashing out. The Aurora Town Board set a special meeting to further discuss the new policy during its meeting on Monday, April 10. Among other issues, the proposal specifies which officials may post messages on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and what content may be posted. The Erie County Legislature appointed James Malczewski of Elma as Legislator of the 10th District on Jan. 5. Malczewski has been the Councilman for the Town of Elma since 2012. This appointment fills the seat vacated by Conservative Joseph Lor-igo, who held the position for five terms. For 44 years, the coming of winter has been a signal for the East Aurora Farmers Market to take a break until around Mother’s Day. State officials in the education department are telling school districts with indigenous names and mascots that changes need to be made in the next couple of years to remove those references. Horizon Ridge Farms, a local Black Angus beef farm in Marilla, opened a farm market and country store which will offer many food products produced in the region, including the farm’s USDA certified beef. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges New Yorkers to check the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors this weekend while setting clocks back for the end of Daylight Saving Time on Nov. 6. Near the corner of Prospect Avenue and South Grove Street stands a 100-year-old flagpole that once provided a patriotic entrance to Hamlin Park. Registration is now open for the 11th annual I Love My Park Day, which will be held on Saturday, May 7 at state parks, historic sites and public lands across New York. This statewide event is a volunteer initiative meant to enhance parks, historic sites and public lands while raising awareness of the needs of the state’s park systems. The Full Circle Festival, hosted by 42 North Brewing Company, returns after a two year hiatus. This year, the festival will be hosted at the historic Stables at Knox Farm State Park on Saturday, May 21. New York State has announced that construction is starting on the .9 million project to add a roundabout where Route 400 sends and Route 16 begins. The state Department of Transportation is completing this project to improve safety in that area. The state has reported that the accident rate is three times higher there than at similar intersections around New York. It also reported that between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2017, there were 19 serious accidents in that section. A preliminary plan for a nine home subdivision on Walnut Street and Prospect Avenue was approved at last week's East Aurora Village Board meeting. Election results for the Village Board of Trustees were announced late on Tuesday, March 15. There were three spots and four candidates seeking a spot on the board. The annual statewide ban prohibiting residential brush burning will begin Wednesday and run through May 14th. Since 2009, the Department of Environmental Conservation has enforced the annual brush burning ban to prevent wildfires and protect communities during heightened conditions for wildfires each spring. The Rural Outreach Center (ROC), located south of East Aurora, received the “Community Star” award from the National Office of State Offices of Rural Health, representing the State of New York.
